On Episode 115 of the Planet LP Podcast, Ted Asregadoo dives deep into a pivotal moment in The Who's history — their 1978 album Who Are You — with longtime Who aficionado Jason Hare. Who Are You may not top most fans' lists of the band's greatest albums, but it remains one of the most significant. Released on August 18, 1978, it was the last record to feature the original lineup and arrived at a moment when the band — and Pete Townshend in particular — were confronting their own fading relevance. As rock critic Greil Marcus noted in his 1978 Rolling Stone review, much of the album is shaped by Townshend's anxieties about obsolescence, artistic exhaustion, and the shifting musical landscape. Forty-seven years later, Who Are You gets the full Super Deluxe treatment, just as The Who call it quits (again) after their final “This Song Is Over” tour in 2025 — a greatest-hits victory lap for casual fans, but not always the deep-cut celebration hardcore devotees were hoping for. Ted and Jason unpack what this new box set offers: the unheard material, the surprises, what genuinely adds to the album's legacy, and where the collection may come up short. They also take a candid look at Keith Moon's final performances — the brilliance, the decline, and the tragedy of a 32-year-old who seemed decades older. Marv and I are joined by Eoghan Lyng and Ken Michaels to discuss the "Living in the Material World" album with an emphasis on the 50th Anniversary remix as found on the "Super Deluxe Edition".     Ken rates the record at the very top, but in general the reviews over the years have been on the positive side, but perhaps less than ecstatic.     

Right around Thanksgiving (the American one, THE ONLY ONE), the Material World got a whole lot more material! The Harrison estate graciously reintroduced one of George's most acclaimed records to the world; via a sparkling, glorious Paul Hicks remix in honor of its' (approximately, infinite) 50th anniversary. There are many iterations of this current reissue, as Beatleworld continues its transition from “marketing exclusively for the masses” to “marketing primarily for boomers with loads of disposable cash”. In arguably the greatest national tragedy of 2024, Theater Tony (The Annoyance) and Theatre T.J. ("Madonna: The Musical") could only afford the 2-LP/streaming version of this title. (Producer Casey, please put an “awwwww” drop here. K? Then do it, damn it!) But fear not! The guys delve into this reissue with their usual panache, like a couple of panache-holes, but also find the holiday spirit to ask other hard questions, like:

Hello Friends! We're back at it again today with, not only another new remix, but also a look at an album already covered on the show, The Monkees' classic 1967 LP Headquarters. In our original instalment we covered the original mono and stereo mixes, but today we're covering both the 1989 Bill Inglot remix on Arista, and the brand new 2022 remix by Andrew Sandoval from the Super Deluxe Edition of the album. While the 1989 was a remix from the final 4-track master, the new 2022 remix provides a resync of the multistage tapes to provide a far more evenly balanced mix, while retaining the sound of 1967 through and through. If you're on the fence about picking up the set, this episode should push you off of it - and with only a few copies left, there's No Time to waste!
