The Jay Franze Show: Your backstage pass to the entertainment industry
Send us a textThe invisible art of music production takes center stage in this fascinating deep dive with Jay, Tiffany, and special guest Mark, who brings decades of musical knowledge to the conversation. What begins with nostalgic recollections of sneaking backstage at a David Lee Roth concert evolves into a masterclass on what makes truly great music tick. The trio explores the meticulous methods of legendary producers like Mutt Lange, whose perfectionism had one of Nashville's premier guitarists repeating just four measures for nearly a week until capturing the precise take he wanted. This standard of excellence explains why Lange's productions for artists like AC/DC, Def Leppard, and Shania Twain remain timeless sonic benchmarks decades later.A spirited debate emerges when the question "Who is the greatest bassist of all time?" hits the table. The hosts and audience members champion virtuosos from across genres—Jaco Pastorius's jazz fusion brilliance, Geddy Lee's progressive rock complexity, Les Claypool's avant-garde techniques, and the funk mastery of Flea. After passionate advocacy and thoughtful analysis of what makes a bassist truly exceptional, Victor Wooten emerges victorious, celebrated for his revolutionary approach to the instrument. When analyzing Tyler Braden's "God & Guns and Roses," the conversation transforms into a fascinating breakdown of music production's three pillars: songwriting quality, performance excellence, and production craftsmanship. This analytical framework offers rare insight into how industry professionals evaluate music beyond subjective preferences. The episode also touches on genre crossover controversies, with heated opinions about which artists are making authentic evolutions versus calculated commercial moves. Whether you're a musician, producer, or simply a passionate music fan, this episode delivers both entertainment and education in equal measure.LinksJay Franze: https://JayFranze.comVirtually You: https://www.virtuallyyouva.com/ Support the show
I Did It Again" im Jahr 2000 ihr zweites Album herausgebracht. I Did It Again" raus. I Did It Again" hagelt es Platin- und sogar Diamantauszeichnungen. I Did It Again" für viele Jahre ein Fundament im Musikgeschäft gegossen. I Did It Again" wird im Podcast gesprochen: (15:33) – "Invaders"(16:00) – "Oops!... I Did It Again"(38:44) – "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction"(46:36) – "Stronger"(57:09) – "Lucky"(01:01:33) – "Dear Diary"__________ Alle Shownotes und weiterführenden Links zur Folge: https://1.ard.de/britney-spears-oops-i-did-it-again __________ Ihr wollt mehr Podcasts wie diesen? Here's my background. Love Bryan Adams. He did "Cuts Like a Knife", one of the great rock tracks of eighties radio. "Straight from the Heart", one of the great ballads of rock radio, and the windows down, summertime, turn it up loud, catch a little buzz, rock and roll of Reckless. His eighties work is the foundation. And then he went into the nineties and worked with Mutt Lange and had a huge album. And then worked on some soundtracks, went ballad-heavy, and then lost his way. Now I saw him live, would have been 1987. The Hooters opened. It was Joe Louis Arena. So it was the, you know, 17,000. Great show. Saw him in Indianapolis - 2007-ish. And it was really good Bryan Adams has always been good live. He has a 2025 tour of Europe planned. Now he has new music. And I've been so disappointed with Bryan Adams music over the past 30 years. Never a great lyricist - he's not Springsteen. He's not Petty. But the the banging eighties guitar, drums, whiskey-soaked voice played loud - that's Bryan Adams. That is his sweet spot, and and he had lost that. Shyper-generic and not great fun - to me anyway. But he's come back with some new music. It's a first listen for me. Hadn't heard it yet. We're gonna hear it together. We're gonna I'm gonna react to it, and we'll see what we see what I think. What does it do for me? For you? A single called Roll With the Punches was released in February. That's gonna be the name of the album due to come out sometime in 2025. And then he has released a second single in March He's working again with Mutt Lange. Let's see what this sounds like. may stop it as we're getting through part of it. What do we think? So this is the brand new single. It's called "Make Up Your Mind". Let's turn it up and listen together. And then I found a couple of added surprises. :) email: rockpoprollpodcast@gmail.com website: www.rockpopandroll.com
High and Dry: Def Leppard's Gateway from NWOBHM to Arena Rock KingsBefore Hysteria took over MTV and Pyromania lit up the charts, Def Leppard were loud, raw, and hungry. Their 1981 album, High and Dry, was the crucial turning point—bridging the grit of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) with the polished, hook-laden sound that would dominate ‘80s rock radio. But does it get the recognition it deserves? This week, we go deep into Def Leppard's unsung classic—breaking down the ferocious dual-guitar attack, the emergence of the power ballad, and why this album is the missing link between underground metal and stadium rock dominance. If you love AC/DC, Scorpions, Van Halen, or Judas Priest, this episode is for you.
Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are joined by guest Steve Singiser. Steve is formerly a contributing editor at Daily Kos Elections and now is a contributor at The Downballot.Steve's Music Pick: Def LeppardDo you wanna get rocked? If the answer is yes and the decade was the 1980s, it's likely Def Leppard was at least partially responsible for the rocking. With two massive albums released four years apart, the band's songs provided the soundtrack for a generation.Pyromania lit the fuse, so to speak, with “Photograph” bursting through televisions on MTV and with “Foolin'” and “Rock of Ages” cracking the Billboard Top 40 chart. The production skills and songwriting savvy of “Mutt” Lange was key. A de-facto sixth band member, his contributions transformed the group from a solid British hard rock/heavy metal band to one that took over the world with massive pop/rock crossover success. Infinite hooks, layered vocals, processed everything, pre-choruses everywhere -- those are Lange trademarks that helped lure in listeners.Hysteria followed after a number of setbacks and delays. Drummer Rick Allen lost an arm and Lange initially pulled out of the project due to exhaustion. But once things came together, the album took off like a rocket. “Pour Some Sugar on Me” was the jet fuel to power Hysteria after initial just okay sales numbers. Eventually seven singles were released, including #1 hit “Love Bites,” fulfilling the ambitions of creating a hard rock Thriller.Unfortunately, guitarist Steve Clark lost his battle with alcoholism shortly afterward. His songwriting contributions and playing style are missed from future releases, though Vivian Campbell has proven to be a solid replacement. There's plenty to love from the first two albums, prior to the band's breakthrough, and Adrenalize and Euphoria still contain highlights (we urge you to check out “Paper Sun” from the latter album). This is also a story about loyalty. Def Leppard's line-up has been remarkably consistent through the years. When Rick Allen lost his arm, band members gave him the time to recover and learn to play in a different way. When “Mutt” Lange couldn't produce Hysteria, the band realized the project couldn't move forward without him. When Steve Clark needed help, the band gave him time off and got him into rehab as many times as possible. The band still is a huge draw on tour because songs as good as these don't die. Listen in, enjoy the tunes and feel free to rock, rock ‘til you drop.
Def Leppard had tasted arena rock success with their breakthrough hit Pyromania but they still wanted more, so teaming up with Mutt Lange they headed into the studio to create a hair metal version of Thriller. The guys get together to discuss terrible lyrics, cringey 80s vocal effects, and the slow sway of stadium choruses. While Crossbone Skully may be a new band to some, they are definitely not a fresh band when it comes to pedigree. Frontman Tommy Henriksen is an integral part of both Alice Cooper's band and the Hollywood Vampires, earning his stripes multiple times over through countless tours and live performances. But with Crossbone Skully the landscape has shifted considerably. This is Henriksen's own band. His creation. His baby. And today the world gets to share in his vision when Crossbone Skully unleash their debut album Evil World Machine on the world.A vicious, snarling slab of rock music brilliance, Evil World Machine is an emphatic statement of intent, executive produced by the legendary Mutt Lange with just enough finesse to draw comparisons with some of the bigger artists in his resume.HEAVY had the pleasure of catching up with Tommy and guitarist Anna Cara to talk more about the album and the rise and rise of Crossbone Skully."It's been a long time coming," Tommy smiled when asked about the album. "It's been quite a while since it's been finished, and to me, it feels like a bunch of excitement and relief. Finally, people can hear this."In the full interview, Tommy and Anna expressed excitement and relief at finally releasing their album, which they had been working on for a long time. They acknowledged the frustration of waiting for the right moment to release it, but believed it was the universe's timing. The group discussed the diverse musical influences in their album, including AC/DC, the Sex Pistols, and The Who. They also mentioned the various singles released from the album, and hinted at some powerful tracks that hadn't been released as singles yet. Both discussed their desire to create music that transcends genres, rather than being pigeonholed into a specific sound. They mentioned their inspiration from various artists such as The Who, Queen, David Bowie, and Motley Crue and also talked about their approach to featuring guest artists on their songs, with Nikki Sixx from Motley Crue and Phil Collen from Def Leppard being mentioned as examples.Tommy spoke about the thought process behind the album's opening track, which was inspired by David Bowie and Motley Crue plus the involvement of legendary producer Mutt Lange, who was executive producer on the album. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with Alice Cooper's band and emphasized the importance of conveying a message of survival and doing the right thing in their music. The band also discussed their upcoming live shows, with a tour kicking off in Hollywood, and expressed interest in touring in Australia plus more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Hysteria is the album that should not exist. Def Leppard's fourth studio album was plagued with delays and tragedy. Despite this fact, the album would become one of the greatest heavy metal albums of all time. The band wrapped up their Pyromania tour in early 1984, and started writing their next album shortly thereafter. Producter John "Mutt" Lange began working with them to arrange the songs, but was suffering from burnout and couldn't commit to producing the album. Jim Steinman (of Meatloaf's "Bat Out of Hell" fame). The fit was not good, and the band parted ways with Steinman by the fall. They began self-producing, but it was slow work. Then in December tragedy struck, as drummer Rick Allen crashed his Corvette, losing his left arm in the accident. The band stuck with him as he returned to the drums, using a combination of acoustic and electronic drums and MIDI pedals to trigger sounds for parts ordinarily played with the left arm. Self-production was continued until Mutt Lange was able to rejoin in mid-1985. Final recording sessions occurred in early 1987, and the finished product finally was released in August 1987.Def Leppard's goal with the album, was amazingly aggressive: they wanted to create a rock album similar to Michael Jackson's "Thriller," such that every track on the album could potentially be a hit single. This goal was largely achieved, as seven of the albums tracks were released as singles, an unpresidented achievement for a rock band at the time. This would also produce controversy with Def Leppard fans, as the group was perceived by some as selling out to commercial "hair metal" sensitivities popular at the time. Friend of the show Steve Hardin joins us in Bruce's absence, and Lynch brings us this monster album of heavy metal (or hair metal, depending on your perspecitve) for week's podcast. HysteriaThe title track was the fourth single from the album, and the group's first top 10 single in the US. Drummer Rick Allen came up with the name for this slow rocker. "'Cause it's a miracle, oh say you will, ooh babe. Hysteria when you're near."AnimalThis fast paced song was the second release in the US and the first single in the UK where it broke into the top 10. It was one of the more difficult songs for the group to write, going through multiple iterations with multiple producers before arriving in the style used on the album.RocketThis track was almost created as an instrumental, but morphed into a tribute song, referencing many of the influential groups of the 60's and 70's. It also features a backwards masking vocal from another song on the album (Gods of War) which says, "we're fighting with the gods of war." Pour Some Suger On MeOften considered Def Leppard's signature song, this track was a last-minute addition to the album. It came out of an acoustic jam developed by lead singer Joe Elliott. Producer Mutt Lange liked the tune and pushed for its development despite the album being behind schedule. It was created in about 2 weeks, and would reach number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:I Get Around by The Beach Boys (from the motion picture “Goor Morning, Vietnam”)This movie starred Robin Williams as an Armed Forces Radio Service DJ who is popular with the troops, but problemmatic to the bureaucrats. STAFF PICKS:Say You Will by ForeignerRob starts the staff pick with a song that hit number 6 on the charts. Foreigner evolved their sound in the late 80's to meet the aesthetic of the day, with heavier use of the synthesizer and less guitar riffs. It is the first single from their sixth studio album, "Inside Information."No New Tale to Tell by Love and RocketsWayne's staff pick is an alternative rock sound with an unusual flute instrumentation from a group out of the UK underground. This was their first US hit, going to number 18 on the US Mainstream Rock chart. It is from their third album, "Earth, Sun, Moon," and they would release another four albums before breaking up in 1989,Big River by the Beat FarmersFriend of the show Steve Hardin brings an unusual song with a country/rocakabilly slant. The lyrics discuss following a girl down the Mississippi.Faith by George MichaelLynch finishes the title track from George Michael's debut solo album. This song with a Bo Diddley beat on an acoustic rhythm guitar went to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Michael wrote the song because he needed faith in his own abilities after leaving the band Wham! to go solo. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Complexity by Front Line AssemblyThis Canadian industrial band released their first full-length album in 1987. __________ Über diese Songs vom Album "Highway To Hell" wird im Podcast gesprochen: (12:31) – "Highway To Hell"(30:24) – "Night Prowler"(40:16) – "Girls Got Rhythm"(47:25) – "Touch Too Much"(56:37) – "If You Want Blood (You Got It)"__________ Alle Shownotes und weiterführenden Links zur Folge "Highway To Hell" findet ihr hier: https://www.swr.de/swr1/rp/meilensteine/swr1-meilensteine-acdc-highway-to-hell-100.html __________ Ihr wollt mehr Podcasts wie diesen? Welcome to The Singers Talk Podcast based on my book of the same name. This week you'll hear my conversation with Joe Elliott from Def Leppard. A Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee who has sold over 100 million records, but more importantly to me, he's a childhood hero! In this episode you're gonna hear us talk about about being imprisoned by the songs you write when you're younger, and the solutions that can help with that as you grow older. You'll hear how meticulous Joe is about taking care of his voice, his incredible work ethic, and how he survives on the road. We talk about those iconic Def Leppard backing vocals, we journey through some tracks from the past, working with “Mutt” Lange, and the struggles Joe went through recording the greatest power ballad of all time. “Bringin' on the Heartbreak.” And we're gonna hear how Joe's been reinventing himself as a vocalist, and much, much more… All my writer's royalties from sales of the book benefit the kids and families at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital through our Music Gives to St. Jude Kids campaign. Though AC/DC are one of the most revered and successful bands in the history of rock n roll, in 1979 they hadn't cracked the Top 100 in the US. The killer riffs laid down by Malcolm Young had gained them a strong following in Europe and their native Australia but they had yet to breach the great big U-S-of-A. So in 1979 they brought in a new producer, Robert John "Mutt" Lange to give them an edge. And though they were all skeptical after giving Eddie Kramer a shot, once Mutt showed them he knew how to sing, how to get the most out of Angus's guitar and how to put together songs, they were all on board. However, though this would be their big breakthrough in America with Highway To Hell reaching the Top 20, the celebration wouldn't last as lead singer and primary antagonist Bon Scott would soon die while living that rock n roll life. But before he left he gave us some of his patented sexual innuendo (Walk All Over You, Love Hungry Man, Touch Too Much) and his description of his lifestyle in the title track. Cliff Williams had settled in on the bass after Powerage and the live album If You Want Blood You Got It and Angus Young came of age with the help of Mutt Lange in the studio. The result is some of their greatest riffs (Highway To Hell, If You Want Blood (You've Got It), fan favorites (Girls Got Rhythm, Shot Down In Flames) and controversy (Nightprowler). It marked the end of an era with Bon Scott but the start of working with Mutt Lange who would help their next album become the 2nd biggest selling album of all time. The influential British shredder talks about how he formed his playing style and demonstrates how to rip one of his most iconic leads. To hear Phil Collen tell it, he joined Def Leppard almost by accident. He had loaned the band one of his amps, and when they asked him to play some leads on their upcoming record Pyromania, Collen thought he was just doing his friends a solid. The rest is history. He and Shifty talk through Collen's formative years on guitar, where he soaked up the scorching playing of classic guitar heroes: Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Mick Ronson, Michael Schenker, and John Petrucci all played a hand in Collen's high-flying fretwork. How did Collen fit into the '80s arms race of speedy guitar playing? His participation might have had something to do with Thin Lizzy's Gary Moore. Collen's solo on “Photograph” is a perfect example of the sort of “ear candy” that producer Mutt Lange encouraged the band to chase in the studio—and yes, he did record individual notes to build a single guitar chord on Pyromania. But there weren't many tricks to Collen's sound on the solo. His Ibanez Destroyer and a 50-watt Marshall were all he needed to get the job done for the slick, Johnny Thunders-inspired solo. Tune in to see how he worked that two-piece setup to record one of the most influential guitar solos of the '80s. Click below to subscribe to the podcast! When Maroon 5 came up with their smash hit “Moves Like Jagger,” they knew Jagger was a name that would resonate with listeners. And in 2011, Maroon 5 definitely knew what their fans wanted to hear. But it wasn't always that way. Have you ever heard of the ‘90s alt-rock band Kara's Flowers? If you haven't you're not alone. They were one of the more forgettable bands of their time. Kara's Flowers did catch the attention of Rob Cavallo, who you may remember as the guy who produced Green Day's American Idiot. He saw a lot of potential in Kara's Flowers and produced their second album, the power-pop-tinged The Fourth World. Upon its release in August 1997, the album only sold 5,000 copies. In 2001 Kara's Flowers resumed band activity, changing up their sound by trying a number of different styles, including country and folk, before settling on becoming what they deemed "a soul band, but with five white dudes.” They cut a demo for MCA Records, but the label rejected it. However, they did find an interested label in Octone Records, whose co-founder Ben Berkman had worked at Warner Music and knew of the band from their time with Reprise. In a 2004 interview with Hit Quarters, Berkman said he loved what he heard in a song called “Sunday Morning” but couldn't believe it was the same band because they had such a completely different sound. It was clear to Berkman that the band was ready to take off. All they needed now was another guitarist and a brand new name. Eventually the band decided on the name Maroon 5. Why “5” and not, say, Maroon Moon? Well, the answer remains to be a secret between band members… and Billy Joel. Wait, Billy Joel? Now with a record deal and a brand new name, Maroon 5 were a whole new band. Their first single, “Harder To Breathe” was a slow-mover on the charts, but eventually earned the band some airplay. Once it caught on the band decided to re-release the album one year later, and at the beginning of 2004 they issued a second single, “This Love,” a song influenced by Stevie Wonder and written about Jane moving out after the breakup. As you may already know, “This Love” became a smash hit, followed by “She Will Be Loved” and “Sunday Morning.” You know them all. And just like that Maroon 5 were now a household name. Their second album "It Won't Be Soon Before Long" was an instant hit - thanks to lead single “Makes Me Wonder,” which became the band's first song to hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It actually broke a record by jumping from #64 to #1 based purely on its first week of iTunes sales. Maroon 5 wanted a different experience when it came to making album number three. Luckily they received a phone call from Mutt Lange, the famous South African producer, who asked if he could make their next record with them. Mutt has quite the résumé. He got his start in the late ‘70s, by producing both AC/DC's Highway To Hell and Back In Black. From there he would produce classic records by Def Leppard, The Cars, Michael Bolton, and Canada's own Bryan Adams. Maroon 5 released their third album, Hands All Over, on September 2010. It would debut at #2 on Billboard's album chart and receive mixed reviews, but got some love from Rolling Stone, which called it “the band's brightest-sounding and poppiest yet.” The upbeat, funky pop on singles like “Misery” and “Give A Little More” demonstrated a punchier sound. Although the album sold well enough and kept them on the road, something was missing.Up until this point, Maroon 5 had only ever written songs themselves. They had never worked with anyone outside of their circle. But they felt it was time to open the door to other songwriters and see what could happen.Luckily for Maroon 5, two up-and-coming producers were working on a song that would become not just the year's biggest hit, but the band's biggest hit ever. This is the true story of Maroon 5's 'Moves' Like Jagger' ft. Christina Aguilera - with newly unearthed audio. Shania Twain is a singer and songwriter from Ontario, Canada. She's the only female artist to have had three consecutive Diamond albums — albums that have sold over ten million copies. Actually, her 1997 album Come On Over is the best-selling album by a female solo artist of all time. One of the most iconic songs from that iconic album is "You're Still the One." It was co-written and produced by Mutt Lange, who had previously produced some other classic albums, like Back in Black by AC/DC and Pyromania by Def Leppard. He had also produced Shania Twain's previous album, The Woman in Me. For this episode, Shania told me the story of writing “You're Still the One.” She told me about what the song meant to her when she was making it, over 25 years ago, and what it means to her now.For more, visit songexploder.net/shania-twain.

Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are joined by guest Eric Kohn. Eric is the Director of Marketing & Communications at the Acton Institute. Check him out on Twitter at @iEricKohn.Eric's Music Pick: Huey Lewis & the NewsDo you believe in miracles? Yes! After years of lobbying, Jeff has proven that anyone will fold, given enough time and pressure. Here is the Huey Lewis & the News episode of Political Beats. Those of you with us for a while will know that the band is a favorite of Scot's while Jeff previously has taken any opportunity to vow never to cover Huey and the boys on the show. Well, recently he had a change of heart (Track One, Picture This) and we wasted no time in finding a guest. Did we end up talking for three hours about Huey Lewis & the News? Of course we did. Did we change Jeff's mind? Listen and find out.Scot's love of the band started at a young age, and much of his knowledge of the early story of the band's history comes from a mass-market paperback that he still has to this day. Huey Lewis & the News: A Biography is a 142-page chronicle of the rise of the band and its origins on the San Francisco music scene. It's out of print, obviously, but check your local used bookstore for a copy.Huey Lewis & the News essentially was the merger of two big local Bay area bands -- Clover and Soundhole. Huey and keyboardist Sean Hopper played in the former, while drummer Bill Gibson, saxophonist/guitarist Johnny Colla, and bassist Mario Cipollina in the latter. Clover (sans Huey) were perhaps best known for being Elvis Costello's back-up band on My Aim Is True. The band then picked up a 21-year-old kid in 1979, Chris Hayes, to play lead guitar and were off. The next year, 1980, brought the little-noticed self-titled debut. Here's the thing: It's quite good! This album, and the early sound of the band, is the commercial follow-through on the wonderful music made by the pub rock artists of the U.K. This record is heavier on Mario's bass than later entries, but those trademark backing vocals are there from the start. It didn't sell. At all. The next album would be make or break. Huey's face alone is on the cover. Harmonies are tighter. Little did they know they had an ace in the hole: a song written by Mutt Lange. "Do You Believe in Love" would explode to #7 on the charts. The band had a hit. A follow-up would be tougher. Three other singles from Picture This failed to break #36, though one, “Workin' for a Livin',” has endured as a blue-collar anthem. The band went back to work with a taste of success and a thirst for more. The mission for the next album was simple: every song a hit. Easy, right? With Sports, they pretty much pulled it off. You know virtually every song on this album, including “I Want a New Drug,” “The Heart of Rock and Roll,” “If This Is It,” and more. There was no thematic goal other than producing hits. Synths, drum machines, massive hooks -- whatever it took. Outside writers? Sure! A strength of the band was taking other's material and making it sound like their own, as they did on “Heart and Soul” and “Walking On a Thin Line.”Sports was a monster. Massive headlining tours followed. Two major projects before the next album would drop. First, Huey would take a lead vocal spot in "We Are the World,” filling in for Prince. Second, some work on a little film called Back to the Future and the band's first #1 hit in “The Power of Love.”Huey Lewis & the News is on top of the world. But 1986 is approaching and a new album is due soon. One problem: No one hears a single. One of the engineers calls up Chris Hayes at home and says, "Chris, we need a hit.""Stuck With You" was what he came up with, and it was the lead single for Fore!, which would also hit #1 & sell 3 million+ copies. That said, Fore! is a bit of an odd duck. Fully half the songs were from outside writers, including the album's other #1 single, “Jacob's Ladder” (written by the Hornsby brothers)Next? Well, whatever the band wanted. And what they wanted was not necessarily commercial in nature. A socially conscious effort full of eclectic musical themes, Small World. As far as I've read, the band loves this album. They got to stretch their legs as musicians. They had earned the right to make a project of their choosing. The record-buying public was not impressed. Small World barely scraped 1 million units in sales. The band did have one last bullet to fire at the charts. “Perfect World,” a song written by Alex Call, a former Clover bandmate of Huey and Sean, hit #3 and clearly sits aside their best.Afterward, the band had some well-earned time off. In the time span, though, the rock world was changing quickly. Huey & company dropped the weirdness of the last album and returned to the blueprint -- rock, R&B, a love song, and a tune by Mutt Lange. All on Hard At Play. There would not be another album of new material for ten years. Four Chords and Several Years Ago, an album of 50s-era covers, came in 1994.Plan B, an album of new material, arrived in 2001, followed by Soulsville, a Stax covers album, and finally 2020's Weather. The last record was released following Huey's diagnosis of Ménière's disease, an inner-ear disorder, which means he can no longer hear music frequencies or hold vocal pitches. The result is no touring and no more new music from the band. It's sometimes hard to hear Huey Lewis & the News on the radio. Living on that weird line between rock and pop in the 1980s means there's not a great format for those songs now. It's a catalog well worth further inspection, though. You won't regret spending three hours with us and the band.
In August of 1987 Def Leppard released their fourth studio album. Produced by Mutt Lange over the course of three years, the record became an unstoppable glam pop juggernaut, spawning 7 singles, and selling over 12,000,000 copies stateside. It rules! Lets talk Def Leppard, Hysteria!
Ever thought about how making a billion dollars would ruin your life? Maybe you pondered a lot of options (revolutionary coup, botched CoolSculpting, basic bitch drug cartel kidnapping), but you MIGHT have missed an obvious one if you haven't read all the People mag listicles about Shania Twain's divorce-slash-husband-swap! Long story short, do NOT hire someone to be your best friend and then leave them alone in a palatial Swiss chalet with your superproducer husband while you go on tour. Evan, Andrew, and friend of the pod Jiji Lee discuss how Shania and Mutt Lange's ballad remains the most perfect ballad of all time even after their gruesome divorce, and also how paradoxically it could be improved by leaning into Shania's sheer fury over being spurned, with an added bonus of it being very hard to extradite criminals from Switzerland. Guest: Jiji Lee You can now watch the video version of this episode HERE! Walk-in music: ‘(Everything I Do) I Do It For You' by Bryan Adams; ‘Highway To Hell' by ACDC; ‘Someday' by Mariah Carey.
