Subscribe to our channel here: http://www.youtube.com/@chatsandtatts Aaron Della Vedova, host of the podcast Chats and Tatts, welcomes local comedian Joe Sib to the show. Joe grew up in the Santa Cruz Mountains of Northern California and had a unique upbringing due to living on a ranch. As a result, he had limited access to what other kids were listening to and he would cruise around with a little blue radio, listening to Abba and the Village People, Elton John, the Eagles, and Carly Simon. After his parents divorced, Joe began visiting his dad in San Jose and discovered a new world of punk music at a skateboard park. He was hooked! The conversation takes us through Joe's career in music and his transition from owning Side One Dummy Records to stand-up comedy and how punk rock influenced the speaker's life. He. also delves into his love for the stage, the challenges he faces even today as a comedian, social media, the 'woke' movement and its impact on comedy, and invites you all to his upcoming headlining show in La Jolla, CA at the Comedy Club. Don't Be Sad, ALLAH knows
The pursuit of happiness, which is a beautiful thing, can turn into an extreme when we become afraid to be sad and try to avoid it at all costs. Why are we so scared to be sad? And why is it not only ok to be sad, but important to sit with the sadness? Today's guest, Helen Russell, is a journalist, bestselling author, speaker and happiness researcher. Her first book, https://www.amazon.com/Year-Living-Danishly-Uncovering-Happiest/dp/1785780239/ (The Year of Living Danishly: Uncovering the Secrets of the World's Happiest Country), became an international bestseller and has been optioned for television. She is the author of four other critically acclaimed books, translated into 21 languages. Helen also writes for magazines and newspapers globally, including The Times and The Sunday Times, the Telegraph, the Independent, National Geographic, Wall Street Journal, and the Observer, amongst others. She's spent the last ten years studying cultural approaches to emotions and now speaks about her work internationally. In her book, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08RZ5R7XT/ (How to be Sad), Helen explores why we get sad, what to do when we are sad and how we can all get happier, by learning to be sad, better. Especially while living in these unprecedented times. Most of us are struggling in one way or another and getting better at having difficult conversations and finding ways to handle our sadness will help us become whole, reclaim our wellbeing and be able to truly and fully live. Do you find yourself taking responsibility for how other people are feeling? How comfortable are you when others are uncomfortable? This episode explores the opportunity we have to understand our own discomfort and what our people really need when they are suffering. SPECIAL SUMMER OPPORTUNITY: Sign up here for a unique 1 hour treasure hunt for $29. TREASURE HUNT VISIT www.giaguidry.com for all the info you need to work with me ;) SHOW TRANSCRIPT: 8 Responsibility for Other people's emotions… One of my clients told me this week that her biggest takeaway from our group program is… she is learning that she isn't responsible for other people's happiness. Isn't that remarkable? Did you know that you aren't in charge of other people's emotions? And if the people around you aren't happy… it's actually NOT your job to MAKE THEM HAPPY? Some of you out there already know this… but MOST of us… especially my women listeners, do not realize that other people's emotions aren't within our control. This is one of the fundamental explorations we do in life coaching… so I want to share this with you today… to give you a taste of the richness and depth of this work. Depending on how old you are, you were very likely taught from a really young age that CAN and you DO make other people happy… or sad, or proud, or disappointed, or anything. We believe that we are the CAUSE of other's emotions. The generation that I grew up in taught women to be people pleasers… and my generation is waking UP hunny. We are not interested in participating in this mindset any longer… but the roots run deep. It can be VERY hard to recognize when the brain is operating out of old habits. Here's a perfect example: I was on the phone with my financial advisor this week and we were discussing how much $ I'd like to keep in cash and how much I want to invest. (I know some of you are saying “Don't invest right now, ARE YOU CRAZY?” But listen up friends… everything is on SALE! These prices are as good as the markdowns on designer labels at TJ MAXX!) Instead of really asking MYSELF what I most want to do… I was trying to give the best answer… assuming that my investor wanted me to invest the most. As the call went on, I could hear that what he actually wanted was to help me to feel secure, and at ease… NOT for me to invest the MOST I possibly could right now. Later, I was thinking about the conversation, and I saw how I'm still trying to PLEASE with my answers – I'm not asking MYSELF “what do I want”… I'm trying to give the answer I think the other person wants… even when the thing we're making decisions about is MY money! Crazy! His job would be SO much easier if I would just be straight and clear about what it is that I want. And I KNOW men don't typically have this same problem. Women trend toward pleasing… and for a long time… the patriarchal system has wanted to keep it that way. Think about how trained we are to tune into other people's emotions… to gauge where we stand with them… to figure out if we are safe with them… and ultimately, depending on our relationship… how much we are trying to make them happy or keep them happy. So, when my client began to notice that she's starting to feel less responsible for other people's happiness… that's when I knew that magic is starting to happen! The FIRST step to managing your mind is noticing what your brain likes to do. Noticing the deep groves in your brain which are often habits of thought… old patterns of thought that often aren't even true. we are shaking things loose - we are starting to carve new grooves that are more intentional and will release her from the impossible job of keeping everyone happy all the time. it IS an impossible job. but from the youngest age, we were taught to put others first. As daughters, mothers, spouses… we have been givers and caregivers. And we love our job. We cherish our babies. We WANT them to be happy… WHY? Because we feel good when they are happy. We have been good daughters. And we like it when our parents are happy… we especially like it when they are happy with us we received a lot of affirmation when we pleased our parents We love our families and we love our lives. And when someone in our lives is having a hard time… and it can be a tiny thing… like chipped paint on a pedicure… we swoop right on in with solutions. “you know you can go back and they'll fix that for you.” “Oh, you don't have time? Well, do you know the paint color? I can go buy some for you.” OR it might be really big things… like our kid is going through a break up… or they just lost their job… or they got into a fender bender. WE are SO uncomfortable when our kids are uncomfortable. And it can feel like WE CAN'T REST… until they feel better. So, we try, really hard… to distract them from their misery. We want to take them shopping. We want to make them their favorite meal. We want them to talk to us, and we are searching our archives for just the right thing to say to ease their pain. I remember once, my kid was going through a breakup and he was DEVASTATED. I convinced him to go to a movie with me. This was not a good idea. The movie was no distraction from that level of pain. I felt even worse as he suffered through the 2 hours really not wanting to be there. What he wanted, and what he needed, was to be alone with his emotions in order to feel them and process them. And this is SO HARD TO WATCH. We don't want our people to experience negative emotions…. ever… as if we have any control over this! So, check in with yourself on this… how comfortable are you when your child is experiencing emotional pain? and if you don't have children… then think about a person you care deeply for… If they are going through a breakup… how much does that affect YOUR ability to be at peace? If they are failing a class… how much does that affect your life? If they are addicted if they are in debt if they are being very lazy if they are angry if they are sick if they are stuck in unhealthy relationships… if they are not at peace… how responsible do you feel for that? It's SO difficult to find your own inner peace when your kids are suffering… Why? Because we feel responsible for their suffering… and what's more… we USUALLY believe it's our fault… and THAT'S the root of all of our suffering. Let's linger on that for a moment. We often feel that their emotions are our responsibility… because we believe that we are the reason they are in this mess in the first place. We blame ourselves for their suffering. We didn't teach them well enough. We didn't prepare them. We didn't warn them. We didn't model good relationship fundamentals. We didn't give them enough responsibility as they were growing up. We created these monsters. And now we have to make up for it by rescuing them from the emotions that come with their human experience. The REAL REAL REAL truth is… every single human being on this planet is going to suffer every single possible emotion. Them'r just the facts, mam. We've got a giant spectrum of emotions and we are going to feel them all… multiple times in a life. The more comfortable YOU become with feeling your feelings and processing emotions, the more comfortable you will be witnessing your people moving through the natural unfolding of their own lives. *That's why ALL the work always and only has to be done on the self. the best gift you can ever give your kids is an invitation feel whatever it is they are feeling, and you sit with them and honor their experience. In coaching, we call this ‘holding space.' You don't have to DO anything. you just have to be there. And let me tell you what a RELIEF it is when you take this responsibility off your shoulders. One of my other clients says her family always tells her: “ you're carrying the world!” you can put the world down. You can relax. You can take inventory of how YOU are doing today… You can stay in your lane. You can think only about yourself… you can dream… and you can laugh you can sing in your car and dance in your kitchen you can take a walk and run your fingers along the leaves. you can meet a friend for coffee or just have a little chat on the phone. You can put a letter in the mail to your mom or your aunt or a friend who popped into your brain. This world is a playground! Find some joy in it today… whatever kind of JOY is YOUR kind of joy! Whatever lights YOU up… whatever is FUN for you! Finding Joy is like a scavenger hunt… each one of us has such unique and varied interests… our individual joys are particular to us… and NOBODY gets to tell us what makes us happy. That is our individual liberty to decide. You have the right to BE HAPPY… and you have the right to BE SAD… and you have the right to feel aaaaalllll the emotions. Your kids have that right too. I know it's uncomfortable to see them suffering… but it is their RIGHT. and it is their process… and it's important. I remember reading something by Glennon Doyle once where she said to one of her children, “This pain was meant for you, baby.” That's so beautiful. It really honors the journey of another. and when you say that to yourself… it honors YOUR journey. it's big work, sunshine.
Making friends as an adult is hard! Saga is back! And if Saga is back, then we better get back to investigating Marko & Alana's tumultuous, universe-threatening romance. After we finished Saga Volume 4 on the podcast two years ago, we took a break, waiting for Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples to get back into the business of publishing rad comics. It took a little longer than we expected, but the single issues are flowing again, and it's time for us to catch up. Knowing how challenging Saga can be on our emotions, we thought the best way to approach Marko & Alana this time around was through Helen Russell's self-help book, "How to Be Sad: The Key to a Happier Life: Everything I've Learned About Getting Happier, by Being Sad, Better." Sadness is not something to fight but embrace. Marko, Alana, and Helen will help us realize this natural human experience. Issued Covered in this Episode: Saga # 25 - 30, which were collected in trade paperback Vol. 5. Written by Brian K. Vaughan, fully illustrated by Fiona Staples, and lettered by Fonografiks. The issues were originally published by Image Comics between February 2015 and July 2015. To celebrate the publication of How to be Sad in America and as a special thank you to listeners of the podcast we are delighted to share this exclusive extract from the audiobook. We will be back with a new episode of How to be Sad with Helen Russell next week. An expert on the pursuit of happiness combines her powerful personal story with surprising research and expert advice to reveal the secret of finding joy: allowing sadness to enrich your life and relationships. Helen Russell has researched sadness from the inside out for her entire life. Her earliest memory is of the day her sister died. Her parents divorced soon after, and her mother didn't receive the help she needed to grieve. Coping with her own emotional turmoil—including struggles with body image and infertility—she's endured professional and personal setbacks as well as relationships that have imploded in truly spectacular ways. Even the things that brought her the greatest joy—like eventually becoming a parent—are fraught with challenges. While devoting a career to writing books on happiness, Helen discovered just how many people are terrified of sadness. But the key to happiness is unhappiness—by allowing ourselves to experience pain, we learn to truly appreciate and embrace joy. How to Be Sad is a memoir about living with sadness, as well as an upbeat manifesto for change that encourages us to accept and express our emotions, both good and bad. Interweaving Helen's personal testimony with the latest research on sadness—from psychologists, geneticists, neuroscientists and historians—as well as the experiences of writers, comics, athletes and change-makers from around the world, this vital and inspiring guide explores why we get sad, what makes us feel this way, and how it can be a force for good. Timely and essential, How to Be Sad is about how we can better look after ourselves and each other, simply by getting smarter about sadness. As broadcast October 27, 2021 with plenty of extra Zam! for the podcast travelers. Tonight Lizz Kalo is stuck in the books for midterms, so we had to take the trip alone without her in the studio. Rather ironic as our talented Wednesday contributor actually lived in our destination of Zambia for several years when young. Oh well...she still gave us all the goods on the music front for our 2nd hour of programming, and no half stepping with Zambia, a country positively bursting with musical & artistic innovation for as far back as one can go.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)The Velvet Underground – What Goes OnNgozi Family – Hi BabeBlackfoot – Running Teddy Chisi – Funky LadyChef 187 – AmsterdamKaladoshas – Nipaseko Chance Part II (34:42)Amanaz – Khala My FriendWITCH – Home TownCleo Ice Queen – DreamersJohn Wizards – Lusaka By NightSadistic Zombie feat El Jae – Ku LusakaThe Sakala Brothers – Tawela Amalume Part III (61:40)Salty Dog – See The StormPK Chishala – Na Musonda Sampa The Great – EnergySampa The Great – FreedomNatasha Chansa – Show MeAlfred C. Helen Russell is a journalist, author, and happiness researcher. She's written several books on happiness and why some people are happier than others. Her latest book, however, is called How to Be Sad. Through her research, she discovered that allowing ourselves to be sad could be the key to becoming happier. Some of the things she talks about in this episode are the benefits of happiness, the strategies we should stop using when we feel sad, and the coping skills that can help us embrace the sadness so we can ultimately grow happier. She also shares a simple strategy that could reduce your risk of depression by 30%.
You would be right to think of Sha Na Na as a goofy amalgam of caricatures from a bygone era that might not have actually existed. But there was a time, JUST before their crowning achievement: their show being syndicated, when they attempted to be real, songwriting artists. Not of their self-appointed time and place, but as legitimate pop singers. I DO like some of their stuff. Scott Simon, J Jocko, and Denny Greene released solo records. They were not successful. None of these songs were, either. Scott Simon co-wrote "Sandy" for Grease. ShaNaNa (letter-spacing is intentional - this is how the label reads) - Top 40 (1971) Reached #84, the closest thing they ever had to a hit record. Produced by Eddie Kramer, a South African-English recording producer and engineer that collaborated with several artists now in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, including the Beatles, David Bowie, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, the Kinks, Kiss, Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, John Mellencamp, and Carlos Santana. Also Anthrax, Joe Cocker, Loudness, Peter Frampton, John Mayall, Ten Years After, Mott the Hoople, John Sebastian, Carly Simon, Dionne Warwick, Small Faces, Sir Lord Baltimore, and Whitesnake. (Deep breath) Kramer's film soundtrack credits include Blue Wild Angel: Live at the Isle of Wight, Festival Express, Jimi Plays Monterey, Jimi Plays Berkeley, Live at the Fillmore East, Mad Dogs and Englishmen, The Pursuit of Happiness, Rainbow Bridge, The Song Remains the Same, and Woodstock: Music from the Original Soundtrack and More. And this album by ShaNaNa. Sha Na Na - Bounce In Your Boogie (1972) Produced by Jeff Barry, who co-wrote "Do Wah Diddy Diddy", "Da Doo Ron Ron", "Then He Kissed Me", "Be My Baby", "Chapel of Love", and "River Deep - Mountain High" (all written with his then-wife Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector); "Leader of the Pack" (written with Greenwich and Shadow Morton); "Sugar, Sugar" (written with Andy Kim); "Without Us" (written with Tom Scott), etc. And he produced this album for Sha Na Na. Sha Na Na - Glasses (1972) This is the only song I could find in their discography that was written by John "Bowser" Bowman. She Na Na - Only One Song (1971) This might be their best original, save for the clunky drum punch-ins and mediocre preaching. John Lennon's backing band of choice from 1971-1973 or so also tried to succeed on their own terms, first as a kind of hippy-dippy second-rate peace-loving band of conscience, and later as a hippy-dippy second-rate peace-loving band of conscience that had backed John Lennon. Carly Simon was in the band for a brief time. Elephant's Memory - Old Man Willow (1969) This is from the Midnight Cowboy soundtrack. I love Buddah Records. Elephants Memory - Crossroads of the Stepping Stones (1969) Produced by Wes Farrell who was the music director for The Partridge Family. Elephant's Memory - Mongoose (1970) John Lennon - Woman is the Nigger of the World (1972) With Elephant's Memory and Invisible Strings. I happen to love this song and Yoko's lyrics are truer every day. John Lennon - Sunday Bloody Sunday (1972) Which is better? This, or McCartney's "Give Ireland To The Irish"? Chuck Berry - Bio (1973) Backed by Elephant's Memory. Elephant's Memory - Running Man (1974) Someone gave Ringo Starr a big pile of cocaine (a hell of a drug) and convinced him that he could run a record label, or at least serve as a tax-dodge for someone else. From the website Rare Beatles: As early as 1970, Ringo had involvement with a production company, Beachport Company Ltd. (in fact, most of the RING O' RECORDS releases feature this name). On July 26, 1973, Ringo started a new music publishing company, Wobble Music Ltd.. However, his own compositions were published by two other Ringo-owned companies, Startling Music Inc. and Richoroony Ltd.. Ringo purchased Tittenhurst Park, John and Yoko's old manor, on September 18,1973 and immediately made the in-house studio, re-christened Startling Studios, available for use by other recording artists. With Apple Records not being fun anymore and virtually little product being released, George formed Dark Horse Records Ltd. on May 23, 1974. Hot on George's heels, on June 28, 1974, Ringo started a company called Reckongrade Ltd.. By December 11, Ringo changed the name to Pyramid Records Ltd.. On April 4, 1975, Ringo officially declared that RING O' RECORDS was open for business, even though one single and an album had already been released! Just to add more confusion to the paper trail, the RING O' name and logo were trademarks of another Ringo company, Wibble Records Limited. RING O' RECORDS actually signed artists and produced records. However, Ringo was not, personally, an active participant in the company, nor was he signed to the label. Over a three-year period, seven albums, and 17 singles were released. [Ed: Click that link for a complete discography.] In North America, Capitol Records distributed the first two singles and the first album of the fledgling label. Polydor issued the label throughout the rest of the world. But distribution problems and the lack of a personal recording deal saw Ringo put his floundering company on hiatus for 18 months. Polydor became the worldwide distributor for the newly re-launched RING O' RECORDS in March 1977. Only a handful of artists (eleven) recorded for the label. In 1978, RING O' RECORDS, in Europe, became a production company, the Able Label. Ringo's financially disastrous venture into the record business was over. Bobby Keys - Gimme That Key (1975) Dirk and Stig - Ging Gang Goolie (1977) Listen for Eric Idle. This is him and Ricky Fataar, late of the South African band The Flames, The "So Tough"-era Beach Boys, and The Rutles, of which this record is a precursor. If in name only. Someone gave George Harrison a big pile of cocaine (a hell of a drug) and convinced him that he could run a record label, or at least serve as a tax-dodge for someone else. At least his discography is more extensive. Among same: Henry McCullough - You Better Run (1975) Late of Wings. One wonders how this signing happened. If you listen to "Money" by Pink Floyd, Henry is the one saying "I was really drunk at the time..." They also recorded Paul and Linda but they didn't offer much in the way of insight. Any Beatle fan knows this label. Attitudes - Ain't Love Enough (1975) Yes, THAT David Foster. Jiva - Don't Be Sad (1975) Jiva was the first American act signed to Dark Horse Records. According to Geoffrey Giuliano's George Harrison biography, Harrison signed Jiva because they were followers of the young Indian Guru Maharaji, to whom he had been introduced by his future 2nd wife Olivia. Stairsteps - Posado (1976) This was originally The Five Stairsteps and Cubie, and then just The Five Stairsteps. Then Five Stairsteps. And then, for a brief time, "Dr. Jimmy and His Amazing Dancing Uvula", and finally, just Stairsteps. They recorded "O-o-h Child", the huge hit from 1970. Ravi Shankar - I Am Missing You (1974) Ravi Shankar - Dreams (1974) The Temptations - Psychedelic Shack (long version) (1970) The Lundstroms with Tiny - The B-I-B-L-E (?) Think - Gotta Get To Know Each Other (1971) Think had an oddball Top 10 hit in the US with "Once You Understand". Traffic Safety Tip (Public Service Announcement) (?) Spike Jones Without His Orchestra - What is a Disc Jockey? (1954) Vox Populi - Ah! (1969) Wayne Newton - Charade (1964) We All Together - It's Us Who Say Goodbye (1973) Werner Müller - The Stripper (1972) William Shatner - That's Me Trying (2004) Wilson Malone Voice Band - Penny Lane (1968) Xerox - Bit By Bit (?)
The Flaming Lips are one of the most beloved psych-pop bands. They've managed to achieve commercial success and win multiple Grammy awards without having to sacrifice their instinct for the wierd and wonderful. Led by Wayne Coyne, an unconventional but committed frontman, this once band of 'wierdo outsiders' have gone on to inspire a generation of psychedelic rock bands and collaborate with a diverse range of artists—from Henry Rollins and Peaches to Miley Cyrus and Kasey Musgraves. Their latest masterpiece American Head has Coyne and longtime band member Steven Drozd reflecting on their youth and how the culture of drugs impacted their lives and tainted their idea of an American Dream. Many thanks for making this possible—Wayne Coyne for your gracious time and infectious, wide-eyed optimism. Micheal Ivins for helping with the recording. To Rick Gershon from Warner Records Publicity for arranging interviews and permission to use songs. To Chris Greenspon for additional help with sound editing. Songs Featured: "Dinosaurs On The Mountain," "She Don't Use Jelly," "Waiting For Superman," "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Pt 1," Flowers of Neptune 6," "Will You Return When You Come Down," "You n Me Selling Weed," "Mothers Please Don't Be Sad," and "My Religion Is You." Episode 016: When Sixteen Sirens Sing: A Celebration of Women in MusicElizabeth Cotten - Wilson Rag (US 1958)A self taught master of the guitar, Cotten played hers upside down - like Hendrix later would - and pioneered finger picking styles that would influence folk musicians for decades to come.Elyse Weinberg - Deed I Do (US 1969) Canadian singer-songwriter who moved to Los Angeles in the late 60's and quickly fell in with the canyon scene, her pal Neil Young not only spurred her move to the West Coast, but is also featured on her album from from which this stunning Bert Jansch cover is taken. Judy Henske & Jerry Yester - Charity (US 1969)After cutting her teeth with two solo albums for Elektra in the early 60's, this versatile singer recorded the folk-psych masterpiece Farewell Aldebaren with her then husband Jerry Yester. The album veers in all sorts of directions, but the center of it all is the intense voice of Henske as heard on this mini epic number.GTO's - Do Me In Once And I'll Be Sad, Do Me In Twice And I'll Know Better (Circular Circulation) (US 1969)Girls Together Outrageously are the inventors of the term "groupie" and a motley gang of women who formed a ballet art collective that opened for Frank Zappa around Los Angeles. Zappa produced an LP for the Girls on his Straight record label, which is one of the most fascinating time capsules of late 1960's Los Angeles. The Goodees - A Little Bit of You (US 1969)This Memphis band specialized in an updated "girl group" sound and scored a minor hit with their first single "Condition Red". This sweet love song is taken from their only album and captures the Goodees' sound perfectly. The Feminine Complex - Forgetting (US 1969)Also dabbling in girl group territory is this infectious song from these Nashville legends taken from their sole classic album Livin' Love. The LP offers a variety of different sounds, from sultry ballads to acid rock, but their tight harmonies shine on this adorable pop tune.Minnie Riperton - Oh By the Way (US 1970)Minnie is a superstar who needs little introduction! This tune is taken from her first solo effort Come Into My Garden which was produced by Charles Stepney - producer of her flagship band The Rotary Connection. The album's sound is similar, even covering a few of their classics, but the spotlight is solely on Minnie and her incredible voice. The City - All My Time (US 1968)The City was the first vehicle for singer-songwriter Carol King, who would prove to be one of the greatest of her generation. Their album Now That Everything's Been Said features many of King's early compositions as well her fantastic lead vocals. This album cut shows that she is already a master of the aching love song this early in the game.Linda Perhacs - Sandy Toes (US 1970)A former dental assistant who was urged to sing by one her clients, Perhacs cut her debut Parallelograms in 1970. Disappointed by the sound of the vinyl at the time, she then returned to a life away from the music business before returning with follow up albums more than 30 years later after her album became a cult classic.Penny Nichols - Look Around Rock (US 1968)Orange County singer-songwriter who released one album from which this beautiful song - featuring an incredible jazz inspired middle section - is taken .Karen Dalton - Katie Cruel (US 1971)Folk singer with a haunting voice reminiscent of Billy Holiday, Dalton was an integral part of the Greenwich Village folk scene that inspired so many to pick up a guitar and sing. Both of her albums are essential listens.

Talking with author, writer, speaker Helen Russell about sadness. Helen has a new book and a podcast coming out called How to be Sad. We talked about why negative feelings are not been expressed, how crying and negative feelings are a cornerstone of feeling happy. Why should we embracing those negative feelings rather than trying to bury them? In this episode I chatted to the lovely Helen Russell about her latest book 'How to Be Sad.' Helen is a journalist and author who has been researching happiness since 2013 and written several books including The Year of Living Danishly, Gone Viking and The Atlas of Happiness. We dive into a variety of concepts from her books and after such a tough year, I took comfort in talking so openly about sadness which is such a natural part of being human and finding happiness. Today is publication day for Helen's new book How to be Sad. As a special thank you to listeners of the podcast we are delighted to share this exclusive extract from the audiobook. We will be back with a new episode of How to Be Sad with Helen Russell next week. We live in an age when reality TV shows climax in a tearful finale. But feeling sad – genuinely sad – is still taboo. Yet, sadness happens to us all, sometimes in heartbreakingly awful ways. If we don't know how to be sad, it can be isolating for those experiencing it and baffling for those trying to help others through dark times. Today, most of us know intellectually that ‘sad' is normal. But we're not always brilliant at allowing for it, in practice. Sadness is going to happen, so we might as well know how to ‘do it' right. And it's time to start facing our problems and talking about them. Positive psychology may have become more accepted in mainstream culture, but rates of depression have continued to rise. We're trying so hard to be happy. But studies show that we could all benefit from learning the art of sadness and how to handle it, well. We cannot avoid sadness so we might as well learn to handle it. Helen Russell, while researching two previous books on happiness, found that today most of us are terrified of sadness. Many of us are so phobic to averse to negative emotions that we don't recognise them. The post Be Happy, Be Sad – D. Myers appeared first on First Baptist Church of Pecatonica.
As we continue to learn from various books of the Bible about How to Be Sad, we read the Psalms of Disorientation seeking to learn and practice the confidence these Psalmists had in our trustworthy God. We desire to express our longings and difficulties to God. And we seek to share that this God is not only trustworthy, but good beyond our wildest understandings. This God is willing to sacrifice and die for us. We worship a good God, even in difficult moments and painful times.

Today we explore just one of many studies conducted by people like Anthony M. Grant, Tasha Eurich, Tim Wilson, and Emily Pronin, which points to the fact that introspection is not the act of tapping into our deepest selves, rather it is a fabrication, a grand lie constructed by our brains in order to keep the story (it previously created) of "who we are" consistent. Tune in to see what you can do instead of engaging in traditional introspection and asking "Why?". More info: www.amyleo.com --- Sources P. Johansson et. al.
