For the latest podcast Ali caught up with previous podcast guest Graeme Thomson to talk about Under The Ivy, his biography of Kate Bush which has been updated as part of Omnibus Press' Remastered Series. Graeme explains the challenges in writing about such a well-loved, and private, person, the reaction of those interviewed, the formative years of her seemingly idyllic childhood, the questionable press coverage of the artist and her career, and the renewed interest in her career due to Netflix' Stranger Things. The two then discuss Small Hours, Graeme's book about the enigmatic, and problematic, John Martyn, and you could hardly get a more different subject from Bush than Martyn. Graeme discusses the difficulties in writing about controversy, the levels of research required, needing to admire your subject, and keeping the music to the fore. The conversation also touches upon the differing approaches to writing biographies, the importance of being respectful, how the procedure varies depending on the subject, and his hopes for future projects. Graeme also talks about the warm reception to Themes for Great Cities: A New History of Simple Minds which is now available in paperback, and which was the subject of our previous SWH! podcast with Graeme. One of the finest music journalists and writers around, Graeme Thomson is always a pleasure to talk to as he offers further insight into his books and their subjects, and we hope you enjoy listening as much as we did recording it. When everyone went scrambling to therapy during lockdown in 2020, what did the therapists think? Find out in this sweet and intimate conversation with Nick Turner, aka the experimental ambient musician Tyresta. I've had lots of musicians who are in Nick's orbit as guests, but he's the first one to really delve into the music-making process, so this could be a good intro to thinking about a genre that can get pretty heady. Graeme Thomson in conversation with David Eastaugh https://omnibuspress.com/products/small-hours-the-long-night-of-john-martyn Small Hours is an intimate, unflinching biography of one of the great maverick artists. Though Martyn never had a hit single, his extraordinary voice, innovative guitar playing and profoundly soulful songs secured his status as a much admired pioneer. Covered by Eric Clapton, revered by Lee Scratch Perry, produced by Phil Collins, Martyn influenced several generations of musicians, but beneath the songs lay a complicated and volatile personality. He lived his life the same way he made music: improvising as he went; scattering brilliance, beauty, rage and destruction in his wake. Drawing on almost 100 new interviews, Small Hours is a raw and utterly gripping account of sixty years of daredevil creativity, soaring highs and sometimes unconscionable lows.
This week we take a look at Small Hours, the highly-anticipated second novel from British writer Bobby Palmer whose debut Isaac and the Egg is already being touted as a contemporary classic. Also this week, Saph read Turbulence by David Szalay and Joseph read The Night Alphabet by Joelle Taylor. This week's listener recommendation request comes from Rachel who really enjoyed The Watchers by A.M. Shine and is looking for more scary reads. Joseph recommended just about anything by Shirley Jackson and Blood Child And Other Stories by Octavia E. Butler, and Saph recommended The Troop by Nick Cutter and The Loney by Andrew Michael Hurley. Louise Ward of Wardini Books reviews Small Hours by Bobby Palmer published by Hachette. Pub by: Hachette RRP: $37.99
This edition welcomes The Soviet Space Dog Project with atmospheric experimentation into a full-flight sequencer fest. René G. Boscio is an LA-based Puerto Rican composer best known for his unique blend of acoustic and Latino instruments with modern experimental electronics—deep ambient music from Poland by Stefan Weglowski. The album ‘Paradoxum' outlines Matteo Cambò's musical journey and presents itself as an invitation to explore the fusion between human experiences, sonic experimentation, and enchantment. Synthesist Tim Stebbing was part of the league of UK's DIY electronic music artists in the mid-80s with a new single, ‘Gnome Sequence', 10 minutes of sequencing Berlin-style, arpeggiation, and synthesised washes of sound over the top. Deep space German artist Matthias Lehmann has masterfully mastered different styles of electronic music over the last 50 years. Lisa Manning and Tony Laudico met in Tokyo, Japan where they were both working at the time. It was a serendipitous encounter of a Canadian and an American, and the beginning of their version of a modern fairy tale romance. They lived happily for 27 years in many countries around the globe and made thousands of memories with their extended families, friends and two wonderful sons. But unlike many fairy tales that end when a couple dies on the same day after a long life together, Tony and Lisa's fairy tale had a different ending. Lisa Manning Laudico died on August 6th 2022 after five years of living with metastatic breast cancer. She died quickly and unexpectedly within one week. Tony was suddenly faced - as it turns out totally unprepared - with the stunning reality of becoming a widower and the future without the love of his life, his partner and best friend. A year later, soon after the one year anniversary of Lisa's passing, Tony got in touch with our Executive Producer Victoria Goldberg and suggested that they meet and talk about Lisa's last days and how he was able to survive these past 12 months without her. It is remarkable and at times a heart wrenching account of Tony's struggle to comprehend a life without the partnership that had sustained and defined him for 30 years, his whole adult life.He will talk about the anguish of loss, a nightmare of "death-duties", the true meaning of grief, and the solace of friendship.Although not always easy listening, it is an uplifting testament to the power of love.*Special thanks to John Martyn for the use of his song 'Small Hours' - One World (1977)

On this week's show I chat with Donal Dineen who first came to prominence on the seminal music video show No Disco on RTE 2. He moved from there into radio, finding himself at the helm of two hugely influential shows. Firstly, Here Comes The Night on Radio Ireland, and Small Hours on Today FM. Donal chats about how life as the 'psychedelic black sheep' of the family fuelled his desire to move to the bright lights; how a kindly person insisted that a life in the civil service was not for him and pushed him into a more creative sphere; the effect that the sudden death of his father had on his life and his outlook; his love for radio, telling stories via music and pictures; and how the commercial interests of radio stations have left him bitter about the state of the industry. It's a fantastic and open conversation with a man who helped define a particular style of music radio and whose influence has been unmatched since. You can follow Donal Dineen on Twitter @dineensparish
