Some of the most inspiring words can come from some unusual places - and people. This episode begins with some words of hope and inspiration that seem perfect for the holidays - from Mr. Rogers. Source: The World According to Mr. Rogers (https://amzn.to/3RKWfzC). The fight against aging is more complicated than most people think. It isn't just about living longer, it is also about staying healthy as you get older. And while diet and exercise do seem to help, science is looking at some far more sophisticated ways to fight aging. There is some promising work in the lab that can make worms seem younger, live twice as long and improve their cognitive function. One person on the cutting edge of all this is Colleen Murphy. She is a professor at Princeton University, Director of Princeton's Glenn Foundation for Research on Aging and author of the book, How We Age: The Science of Longevity (https://amzn.to/3GKDKF5) I bet there have been times in your life when you didn't try something or take a risk because you were afraid of what other people would think of you – especially if you failed. In 2013, Colleen Murphy's daughter, Lauren, was hit by a car and suffered severe brain damage. This is a miracle story you do NOT want to miss. Colleen Murphy is a wife, mother of seven, author, and public speaker. Tragedy struck Colleen's family when her second oldest daughter, Lauren, was hit by a car and suffered severe brain damage. Colleen's main focus became helping piece Lauren back together again. With the help of specialists from all over the country, her family and friends, as well as her strong faith, she was able to do just that. Today, Colleen and Lauren speak together as a team, inspiring thousands of people by sharing the details of Lauren's tragic accident, never-give-up attitude, and miraculous recovery. Colleen shares this raw, incredible story in her interview and how to unlock hope -- when life seems hopeless: "There are several low points in the book but one that stands out was when Lauren was an inpatient at RIC and they sent her to Northwestern Hospital for a CT scan, the nurse at RIC did not stay with her. Lauren was still medically fragile, and I was inept at caring for her. She had C-diff and I had to try and clean her without help. Once I finished, she began vomiting and I had to launch myself across the metal bars of the bed to try and hold her head up, so she didn't choke. I was soaked in vomit and scared. A while later the doctor finally came in to give me the findings of the CT scans and to let me know that Lauren would need a fourth brain surgery. Suddenly the fact that I was soaked with vomit through my bra, was freezing, and had a bag full of diarrhea-covered clothes seemed rather insignificant."

In 2013, Colleen Murphy received the call no mother wants to receive: her daughter was in the hospital, and may not be alive by the time Colleen arrived. I have the honour of speaking with Colleen Murphy about the journey following a severe accident that turned this family's life upside down. On the morning of April 19, 2013, while out for a typical morning run, Cooleen's daughter Lauren was hit by a car and suffered a severe Traumatic Brain Injury. Lauren was admitted to Cedars- Sinai Hospital in West Hollywood and remained in extremely critical condition for several weeks. Lauren had lived in New York at the time of the accident and was in LA on business. She did not have identification on her and remained a Jane Doe for several hours. Her prognosis was not good. Upon arriving in LA, her parents were told that she had a very slim chance of surviving. Once she got past the extremely critical stage it had been explained that her brain damage was so severe that she would most likely not be able to feed herself, walk, talk or understand spoken words. Thankfully, Lauren has never been typical and she has spent the last 5 years proving all of the experts wrong. Her recovery has been far from easy, she has travelled all over the United States working with experts trying to get better. She works extremely hard and continues to struggle each and every day to regain as much of her former life as possible. Lauren has become the embodiment of the Murphy family saying, “Murphys Don't Quit” and this has become her calling card. Today she lives with her parents in O'Fallon MO and continues to focus on her recovery. She maintains a very busy schedule of speech therapy, physical therapy and the all too often retail therapy trips with her Mother. Lauren enjoys getting out in the community, meeting new people and sharing her story. She remains at high risk for seizure activity due to the extent of her brain damage. One of her seizure triggers is running, an average person may decide to give up running due to the risk, not Lauren, she refuses to give up! To date, against all odds, she has completed over (20) 5k runs with her Dad and continues to inspire all who come across her path. https://murphysdontquit.com/ #braininjury #tbi #braininjuryawareness #stroke #concussion #traumaticbraininjury #braininjurysurvivor #brainhealth #tbisurvivor #brain #postconcussionsyndrome #rehabilitation #concussionrecovery #headinjury #strokesurvivor #strokerehabilitation #tbiawareness #neurorehab #braininjuryrecovery #strokerecovery #pcs #neurorehabilitation #recovery #concussionawareness #mentalhealth #parkinsons #stroketreatment #abi #injury

Quotes: 07:57 “ They also have a life to live, and I don't want everything just to be around trauma, right? It's important for us to make sure that they have the most normal life that they could even if things were different. I didn't want them to have to give up their sports teams or all their extracurricular activities. So that was like a big, big goal of my husband and mine early on. To make sure life continued as close to normal as possible for the rest of the kids. “ 13:12 “So there's always a positive. Something we learned early on, look for the positive. That was their positive attitude.” 18:37 “ Writing has always kind of been my therapy. I am not a private person. I mean, my husband always says he could never run for office, because I'll be blah-blah-blah, but it's always kind of been my therapy. But my twist on it in my writing style is – and it's a gift I got from my late father – I find humor in everything. Even when we're in the thick of things with the kids. I had a blog that I started back in 2008, and at the end of the day, especially when I had a really stressful day, I would sit at the computer and say, “Okay, what was funny about today?” 33:59 “One of the professors that she works with told me something early on, that was like, the best advice she could give me when we were working on the commencement address. She said, “If it's perfect, it's not inspirational.” I'm like, “You know, you're right.” It is the imperfection that makes this such a wonderful story. I mean, here's a girl that was never supposed to be able to speak or understand words, and she's speaking in front of 3000 people. So I have to always remember that, I can't expect her to not have deficits. “ 42:04 “Number one, never give up. No matter what people tell you, never give up, just have faith and I get it that, “our story”, it doesn't always turn out that way, but there's always hope. You just don't know, just put one foot in front of the other, every day is better. You're gonna have some really, really tough days, but hang in there, the next day will be better.” Timestamps: 01:16 Introducing Colleen Murphy 03:58 What are the five keys to unlocking hope? 05:53 The age spread in ages amongst Colleen's seven children and how they reacted to their situation. 08:25 Colleen talks about Lauren's life before the accident. 09:29 Colleen shares how they started having Lauren professionally taken care of. 11:15 How did the Murphy's handle all the siblings getting in to see her and coming in and helping? 13:16 Colleen tells about her experience in handling the stress and seeing through what happened. 15:30 How did the accident happen? 16:38 What point did they see the light that they are able to connect back with Lauren? 18:18 When did the book idea first occur with Colleen? 20:36 How did Colleen feel about her grief that shadowed her creative abilities? 23:33 Colleen's shares her take on using pen and paper and a computer. 25:22 Any aspirations for Colleen to write another book? 26:46 How did the speaking get into Colleen's repertoire, is that something Lauren was doing? 29:32 How does Colleen feel when she's speaking alongside Lauren? 31:15 Colleen takes us through a gig and the whole experience of them speaking. 34:46 How do Colleen and Lauren manage both of their schedules on doing speeches. 37:38 How did they get professional athletes and Taylor Swift involved to help and support? 39:46 The feeling of having a wonderful community and support system. 41:30 Colleen's words of wisdom especially to those who are experiencing tragedies. 43:28 Listen to “Ride On” by James Kevin O'Connor Spotify Playlist: We are already on our 4th playlist, and we've got over 100 artists who are alumni of dHarmic Evolution. We are into December and things are heating up around hockey in many ways and fashions. This week we start with another issue with racism against a 16 year old, Mark Connors in P.E.I. We identify the NHL's marketing problem and we talk about Mikyla Grant-Mentis who has made the Forbes 30 under 30 list of sports figures. Northeastern University hockey is successful, but not just for the men. Dean Evason should be getting an extension, so we break down why. Jake DeBrusk has asked to be traded out of Boston and we talk about why. Colleen Murphy has re-signed with the Metropolitan Riveters, the first time in her career that she will be staying with the same team. Finally, we talk about the ludicrous behavior of yet another member of the Lemieux family. This time it's Brandon, biting Brady Tkachuk. All this and the Arizona Coyotes moving (not) and Evander Kane going to the minors. Lots to form opinions about so give a listen, tell us what you think and Enjoy the Show!
Our culture columnist Tara Lynn Taylor tells us about the long-awaited return of Live Art Dance. Plus, we'll hear about HomeFirst Theatre's production of Colleen Murphy's award-winning play The December Man.

Sometimes we can't "just move on." Sometimes we must first confront the truth about the past. According to our guest this time, we can do that through transitional justice. It addresses situations where doing wrong is not the exception, but has been made normal, as has happened in places like South Africa under apartheid, Northern Ireland during the Troubles—and the United States during our long history of racism, and more recent history of democracy under attack. Colleen Murphy is a professor of Law, Philosophy, and Political Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and an expert on transitional justice. As she makes powerfully clear in this episode, transitional justice has helped other societies truly move forward—and is already under way in parts of the US. Sometimes, as with the murder of George Floyd or the attack on the US Capitol, it's because the truth confronts us, whether or not we're ready to confront it.
Murphys Don’t Quit is a story of hope and resilience as one family rallies together during a tragedy. Colleen Murphys’ daughter, Lauren, suffered severe brain damage after a tragic accident. Lauren remained in the hospital unidentified for several hours, she was not expected to survive. This story is a raw, honest account of the pitfalls and challenges a family faces while navigating life through brain injury. Murphys Don’t Quit shows how one family combined a never-give-up attitude with faith, hope, and love. Throughout the chapters, readers see not just the highs, but the heartbreaking lows. Due to the family’s Irish wit, humor often diffuses the devastating subject matter. Through the many grueling hours of therapy and by visiting specialists all over the country, Lauren was able to find her way back to a life filled with purpose and is now a highly sought after inspirational public speaker.
The aftermath of the murder of George Floyd ripped the scab off of America's racial history. This country has yet to formally address its racial history. Transitional justice provides us an opportunity and move our country forward. Dr. Colleen Murphy joins Anthony Bradley explain what transitional justice is and how it can help America healing our racial wounds. Many countries have attempted to transition to democracy following conflict or repression, but the basic meaning of transitional justice remains hotly contested. In this book, Colleen Murphy analyses transitional justice - showing how it is distinguished from retributive, corrective, and distributive justice - and outlines the ethical standards which societies attempting to democratize should follow. She argues that transitional justice involves the just pursuit of societal transformation. Such transformation requires political reconciliation, which in turn has a complex set of institutional and interpersonal requirements including the rule of law. She shows how societal transformation is also influenced by the moral claims of victims and the demands of perpetrators, and how justice processes can fail to be just by failing to foster this transformation or by not treating victims and perpetrators fairly. Her book will be accessible and enlightening for philosophers, political and social scientists, policy analysts, and legal and human rights scholars and activists.

Our team buys and sells homes in our own market every month. We then mentor, coach, and consult students and Associates all around North America to do the exact same thing. We stay current because we're in the trenches ourselves. DINGWALLS in a Tent, We Out Here Festival 2019 - Love Dancin' Tent BIG LOVE & THANKS Ok here comes the ramble. Some 30 serious plus years ago i stumbled upon a Musical World that was to change & shape my life forever. Sounds dramatic, evangelical, well yes it was, it is. I had found my purpose, my mission, my family! I clubbed 3/4 sometimes 5/6 nights a week, no distance was too far in my little 2CV6, sometimes It was overloaded with other clubbers, or I was on my todd. It didn’t matter, because I knew I would be sharing a space with others who like me needed to dance, to immerse themselves in this incredible music, played by people who felt the same way about it as us. It was about sharing the passion & it was so tangible, you could taste it. They were magical times & pretty intense and they set many of us on a path that we never truly came off. In 2007 we decided to resurrect The Talkin’ Loud Sunday Afternoon sessions at Dingwalls that ran from 87 - 91, as a one off celebration, it was a risk, clubbing had changed, it had evolved, was more diverse musically, which was great on one level but on another had lost that musical family feeling of what “Clubbing” meant to me. But like us it was still important to those that had experienced it and this time they came with family and so our one off - happened every year and recently twice!! The reason I’m going over old ground is that Gilles’ new Festival We Out Here evoked those very same feelings for me, It gave me that sense of belonging - it was a giant club! combining the passion, knowledge & inspiration of the legendary Club sessions & musicians of old, with the new musical visionaries continuing to spread the Musical World we love in their own inspirational way to the next generation. Wow it was truly 4/5 days of none stop joyous pleasure, meeting friends from time and current. We danced & sang with our kids, their friends and our wellies :) The Love Dancin’ tent run by the wonderful Colleen Murphy & husband Adam along with the amazing Mr Scruff nurtured us and our sound. Our guest DJ’s the brilliant Kev Beadle and legendary Colin Curtis read the vibe perfectly & made my legs & face ache from the continuous dancing & smiling. Gilles who spent the 4/5 days being absolutely everywhere at the same time gave us an eyes closing deep Love set and Mr Forge from his first record at 12noon to his last at 7.10pm not only was he pitch perfect, every tune touching your head, heart & legs (I’m so broken

We continue our discussion of transitional justice with Colleen Murphy, comparing the end of apartheid in South Africa with the civil rights movement in the US. In the third of the Sounds of a City series, Colleen Murphy lifts the lid on New Order’s Power, Corruption and Lies and its relationship to Manchester. Speaking to the likes of Peter Hook, Stephen Morris and Peter Saville, we breakdown the components of an album that fused punk and dance, art and experimentation, technology and rock, to create something for a new generation of tech-savvy music-philes to get their teeth into. A Certain Ratio’s Martin Moscrop and The Charlatan’s Tim Burgess discuss this perfect blending, whilst 808 State’s Graham Massey contemplates the fact that Manchester has more in common with New York than it does with any other British city. A story that may sound familiar, but with New Order were stepping out from the shadows of Joy Division the idea of experimentation is amplified and braver, and may not have even worked. And then there was that album cover. Read more here: http://www.classicalbumexperience.com/sounds-of-a-city-new-order-power-corruption-lies/

Starczewski, a shareholder at Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC in Philadelphia; William Alexander, of counsel at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP in Washington; John L. Harrington, a partner at Dentons in Washington; Richard S. Colleen Murphy's new book, The Conceptual Foundations of Transitional Justice (Cambridge University Press, 2017), argues that attaining some degree of justice is possible in nations transitioning to democratic states. There are many historical instances of nations whose citizens take action to change the nature of their regime from one of authoritarianism to democracy. Whether from France in the 1790s to Eastern Europe and Russia in the 1990s, the challenges facing new leaders to look to the future while accounting for the past can be daunting. Murphy argues that transitions need some degree of justice in order to be successful and she seeks to identify the key elements of just transitions. Murphy notes that a just result can take different forms, because of differences in culture, traditions, and the nature of the old regime. She further notes that transitional justice is not as clear and definitive as more familiar forms of justice, such as the retributive justice of the criminal law or the corrective justice of tort law. Instead, transitional justice involves degrees of accountability for wrongdoers and degrees of compensation and recognition for victims. The tools of transitional justice can include amnesties, criminal trials, memorials, truth and reconciliation commissions or reparations. Accordingly, not everyone in the society will be satisfied with the punishment, if any, meted out to perpetrators and the recognition given to victims may seem incomplete or insufficient. Nevertheless, in order to achieve a society-wide transition to a morally improved regime, traditional notions of justice may remain unsatisfied or incomplete.
