"Even as I rocked on my knees, howling, I detected soft breathing behind the roaring. I leaned in, listened. It was the murmuring of the million mothers, backward and forward in time and right now, who had also lost children. They were lifting me, holding me. They had woven a net of their broken hearts, and they were keeping me safe there. I realized that one day I would take my rightful place as a link in this web, and I would hold my sister-mothers when children died. For now my only task was to grieve and be cradled in their love."Mirabai StarrWelcome to the premiere of Season Four of AMORTE podcast where we share loss, grief and death education with a loving view. I am your host Patty Bueno and today I am so honored to share an amazing woman with you.Mirabai Starr is an award-winning author, a mystical scholar and inter-spiritual teacher. She taught Philosophy and World Religions at the University of New Mexico-Taos for 20 years and now teaches and speaks internationally on contemplative practice and inter-spiritual dialog. Mirabai wrote a beautiful memoir in 2015 Caravan of No Despair: A Memoir of Loss and Transformation. In this beautiful memoir, she shares her personal journey with loss.Mirabai lost her brother Matty at the age of 7. Her first love Phillip when she was 14. Her father when she was 30 and she was 40 when her daughter Jenny died at the age of 14. Caravan of No Despair came out  on the 14th anniversary of Jenny´s death. It took her 12 years to be able to be able to integrate the trauma, the beauty of  her story and make it universal and see the  transformational message that came from the book "Show up for your experience, even though it feels impossible to sit in the fire". Her latest book is WILD MERCY: Living the Fierce & Tender Wisdom of the Women Mystics. She lives with her extended family in the mountains of northern New Mexico. "Incluso mientras me balanceaba sobre mis rodillas, aullando, detecté una respiración suave detrás del rugido. Me incliné y escuché. Era el murmullo de un millón de madres, desde el pasado y el futuro, incluso en el presente, que también habían perdido a sus hijos. Me levantaban, abrazándome. Habían tejido una red con sus corazones rotos y me mantenían a salvo en ella. Me di cuenta de que algún día tomaría el lugar que me corresponde como parte del entramado de este tejido, y abrazaría a mis hermanas-madres cuando sus niños murieran. En ese momento, mi única tarea era llorar y sentirme acunada por su amor."Bienvenidos al estreno de la cuarta temporada de AMORTE, donde miramos a la muerte y pérdidas con amor. HAPPY NEW YEAR! I continue to pray for you, the prayer I prayed over you on Christmas Eve. I pray you that you will have a Romans 8, No Condemnation, No Fear, No Despair, No Withholding, No Abandonment 2021! The last message that I shared with you in 2020 came from the Revelation that Jesus gave to the Apostle John, while he was isolated on the Isle of Patmos. Like John’s isolation, we too are beginning a New Year experiencing isolation because of the Pandemic. I have personally drawn much strength this past week from one statement Jesus made that is recorded by John in Revelation 21:5, “Behold, I am making all things new.” This Sunday, with Jesus Words in mind, I want us to explore how we can all begin anew in 2021. Jesus desires to make something new in you, for you, and of you, in this New Year. Pastor Joe Still

"I'm rather obsessed with the mystics of all traditions," enthuses Mirabai Starr, as she muses on the profound relationship between silence and stillness and passionate/ecstatic mystical love. In a rich conversation that touches on the beauty of the high desert of the American Southwest, the earthy/embodied passion of the spirituality of wilderness, and the uniquely subversive wisdom of the feminine mystics, Mirabai deepens and expands our ongoing conversation on silence by inviting us into a place where the spirituality of stillness meets, and embraces, the erotic spirituality of ecstasy, joy, and love. Most of the mystics, even though they're these extravagant love poets, who are overflowing with passion, they all also are grounded in this sense of stillness. And they cultivate that stillness. — Mirabai Starr Mirabai Starr is an author, translator, retreat leader, and leader in the contemplative interspiritual community. Born into a secular Jewish family, Mirabai describes herself as a "daughter of the counter-culture," having spent part of her childhood at the Lama Foundation (an intentional spiritual community, famous as the home of Ram Dass). As an adult, she translated several of the Christian mystics, including John of the Cross, Teresa of Ávila, and Julian of Norwich, into accessible and acclaimed contemporary English. So all the mystics of all traditions, that I know and love anyway, speak to the transformational power of not knowing. I think that's intimately connected with silence. There's a higher truth that is only present, it seems, when we let all of the concepts go, and allow ourselves to know nothing. It's a vulnerable state, it's a state of spiritual nakedness, it's not for the faint of heart. — Mirabai Starr More recently she has written books that celebrate her spirituality (God of Love) and that recount her own challenging and at times heartbreaking life story (Caravan of No Despair).  A popular teacher both in person and online, Mirabai's wisdom is anchored in her own deeply embodied spirituality, drawing on the insight of all the great spiritual traditions and particular on her intuitive celebration of the Divine Feminine. The devotional impulse leads me into the presence of the Sacred, and then I am left with this kind of hush, that I drop into, and then that feeds back in again to that devotional impulse, because following those periods of deep stillness that just wash over my soul, I have that joyous urge to praise. So it's this ever-flowing dance between devotion and nonduality, or between celebration and stillness. — Mirabai Starr Some of the resources and authors we mention in this episode: Mirabai Starr, Caravan of No Despair: A Memoir of Loss and Transformation Mirabai Starr, God of Love: A Guide to the Heart of Christianity, Judaism and Islam Mirabai Starr, Saint Teresa of Ávila: Passionate Mystic John of the Cross, Dark Night of the Soul, translated by Mirabai Starr Teresa of Ávila, Interior Castle, translated by Mirabai Starr Teresa of Ávila, The Book of My Life, translated by Mirabai Starr Julian of Norwich, The Showings, translated by Mirabai Starr John of the Cross, The Poems of St. John of the Cross, translated by Willis Barnstone Mirabai, Ecstatic Poems, translated by Robert Bly and Jane Hirshfield Ram Dass, Be Here Now John of the Cross, Living Flame of Love Geoffrey Chaucer, Canterbury Tales Daniel Ladinsky, The Gift: Poems by Hafiz Daniel Ladinsky, The Purity of Desire: 100 Poems of Rumi Thomas Keating, Invitation to Love Pablo Neruda, Extravagaria, translated by Alistair Reed Marie Howe, The Kingdom of Ordinary Time Thomas Merton, Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander Plotinus, The Enneads Denise Levertov,

John of the Cross, translated by Willis Barnstone Mirabai, Ecstatic Poems, translated by Robert Bly and Jane Hirshfield Ram Dass, Be Here Now John of the Cross, Living Flame of Love Geoffrey Chaucer, Canterbury Tales Daniel Ladinsky, The Gift: Poems by Hafiz Daniel Ladinsky, The Purity of Desire: 100 Poems of Rumi Thomas Keating, Invitation to Love Pablo Neruda, Extravagaria, translated by Alistair Reed Marie Howe, The Kingdom of Ordinary Time Thomas Merton, Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander Plotinus, The Enneads Denise Levertov, The Collected Poems How, how can we step up and offer ourselves in service, to help in some way to alleviate some suffering in this world, unless we have taken that suffering into the cells of our own b...

Raghu welcomes Mirabai Starr- famous for her Christian Mystic books and now her memoir- Caravan of No Despair. Raghu asked what in the world she asked for while still in the Bardos between lives - her first few decades in this incarnation being so full of intense suffering! As if she knew what she needed to transform her being but she really asked for the full monty and managed to come through with flying colors! At one point Mirabai talks about how she "fired" God- "...all the teachings I had once embraced I now dismissed as artifacts of magical thinking." Of course this led to our discussion of the dark night of the soul and St John of the Cross whose book she then translated. And in the midst of that work she had a realization. "Tragedy and trauma are not guarantees for a transformational spiritual experience, true, but they are opportunities." Mirabai also explains two key concepts- Radical Unknowingness and Sacred Unraveling. These two form the backbone of a spiritual path that is not pre-digested concepts but more visceral reality. On the same day that Mirabai's first book arrived, policemen also arrived at her door with the heart-shattering news that her young daughter had died. Ironically, the book was a translation of Dark Night of the Soul by St. John of the Cross. Based on her new memoir Caravan of No Despair, Mirabai shares how she moved through the annihilating fire of grief into the complete unknown—when all spiritual practices had dried up—and back to the hearth of love.

Mirabai Starr is author of CARAVAN OF NO DESPAIR: A Memoir of Loss and Transformation, new translations of the Spanish mystics, John of the Cross and Teresa of Avila, and the award-winning book, GOD OF LOVE: A Guide to the Heart of Judaism, Christianity & Islam. She leads contemplative inter-spiritual retreats worldwide. Episode Outline: The Transformational Power of Loss – Mirabai and I discuss her new book, Caravan of No Despair and how she lays her entire heart and guts out in a raw and unabashed way for readers to see. We also discuss the transformational power of loss and how that can be a great catalyst for change and growth in our life. On Suffering – Mirabai and I discuss Ram Dass’s quotes, “Suffering is the sandpaper of our incarnation. It does its job of shaping us” and how we can grow through our suffering. Mirabai also discusses the role the great mystic teachers can play in helping us to make sense of pain, loss and suffering. On Healing – We’re all human and we’re all recovering from something, which is something Mirabai and I explore. We also talk about how bullshit spiritual niceties often don’t get the job done and what does work instead. On Spirituality – In a previous conversation that Mirabai and I had, she said, “I don’t know any enlightened beings. I used to think that was the goal but I don’t think we get perfection and I know you know that. And so all we can do is be present for all of it, no matter how yucky, with humility, humor and gentleness.” We discuss that and many of the preconceived notions people tend to have about spirituality. What Is God? – The title says it all, and Mirabai and I dive right in. We Are The Ones We’ve Been Waiting For – Mirabai and I discuss the passing of the spiritual torch that seems to be taking place and how can we make sure that to keep the lines of communication and mentorship open between generations so as to not lose the very important heart transmission from these great wisdom teachers.
