In this episode we continue to celebrate Black History Month and are joined by veteran Pan Am pilots Captain Perry Jones and Ed Moon.Perry was the first African American to be hired by Pan Am in late 1965 and Ed was the third to be hired in early 1967. The second African American hired by Pan Am was Otis Benjamin Young in 1966. "O.B.," as he was affectionally referred to, was born in 1938 and graduated from Howard University and then served in the United States Air Force. After Pan Am, he flew for Delta Airlines until retirement. Unfortunately, Captain Young passed away on June 9, 2021.These gentlemen were legendary trailblazers at the height of the civil right movement in the 1960s. All three left a lasting legacy at Pan Am, paved the way for other people of color and beyond, and were part of the change that transformed the commercial aviation community. In 1976, Benjamin Thomas, an Eastern Airlines pilot, organized a meeting that formed the Organization of Black Airline Pilots, now called the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals, to address discrimination in the airline industry.Ed Moon was a one of the 38 founders of the organization and both Perry and Ed served as president and board chair of the organization through the years.Today, the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals or OBAP for short, is a world-leading non-profit organization that changes lives by creating a pathway to success through educating youth, communities, and professionals—shaping an aerospace industry as diverse as the people they serve. For more information on OBAP, visit their website at obap.org.

Over the past six months there has been significant discussion, conversation, and reflection in the aviation world and greater United States with regards to inequality within our society and our industry. The Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals has been at the forefront of this effort in the aviation industry through engagement and the Courageous Conversations Series, a five part industry town hall on race in America, and particularly in the aviation industry. Alongside educational programming and outreach that reaches 60,000+ students around the country, OBAP continues to work to engage young people and industry professionals alike to make the aviation and aerospace industry more inclusive and equitable for all. These herculean efforts have been spearheaded by a dedicated team of volunteers, backed up by sponsors and donors, and in recent years, under the leadership of Vanessa Blacknall-Jamison, OBAP's Chairwoman. In an organization that is about breaking barriers, Vanessa breaks barriers as the first non-pilot Chair of the organization. With a background in change management, recruitment, and safety programs, she brings 40+ years of experience as a trailblazer and leader to the podcast. We discuss more about OBAP's programs, check in with where the industry's Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion efforts stand nearly 6 months after George Floyd's death, and how allies can help achieve a more equitable and inclusive aviation and aerospace world and society as a whole. OBAP's website is http://www.obap.org; the Courageous Conversations series can be found at https://www.obap.org/courageous-conversations-series/. Editorial Note: Some may caution that in the first few weeks of building a podcast audience, a host should avoid controversial subjects. To those that may say or think that, or that may take issue with the title and subject of today’s podcast, my hope is that you are able to step confidently outside your comfort zone and listen to the discussion and use it as a springboard to listen to the larger conversations going on in our country and around the world today. Aviation will not survive and will not thrive unless those that are already within it make the effort to ensure our leadership, employee base, and customer base reflects the communities in which we serve. This is a safety issue, this is an economic issue, and most importantly, it’s a human issue.
Will Kool joins us this episode to discuss how he got into aviation and how in his quest to achieve this dream of flying, took him to many places around the country and to many different jobs, so aviation some not. Will goes on to give some advice on what aviation resources he uses to stay in contact with his aviation communities such as: Women in Aviation, OBAP, NGPA, AOPA and Flying Magazine. He also uses Ravencareers.com as a news reference as well. Captain Kool also discuss some prudent financial thoughts to consider during these trying times, for those that are already in aviation, such as, ‘don’t make career decisions based off of speculation’. Carl Minter got his start in aviation as a teenager in the Negro Airmen International program, and later attended Parks College and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. After a stint working as an engineer for Sikorsky, he joined the Air Force and flew C-141's and then was selected to fly Presidential Support missions in the Gulfstream aircraft. After leaving the military and joining a legacy airline, Karl continued his service in the Air Force reserves. In this podcast, Karl describes the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals and explains their many programs, including job fairs, mentoring and scholarship opportunities.
This discussion includes the views of three airline pilots/cofounders of the Sisters of the Skies a.k.a. Black Butterflies Facebook page: Stephanie Mitchell-Smith Gulley, Kim McCommon & Tomica Adams. Most members of this group are also affiliated with the OBAP-Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals; Tuskegee Airmen International; and the Bessie Coleman Aerospace Legacy. The group was established to give female aviators of color--including African Americans, Latinos, Hispanics, Indian, etc.--a place to share accomplishments, vent frustrations and generally unite those who make up a very small slice of the pilot demographic pie. While they reach back to honor those who helped to pave the way for them, so do they strive to pay-it-forward by offering encouragement to those who follow.
Welcome OBAP (Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals) Aviation Career Education Academy (ACE). OBAP ACE Academies are co-sponsored with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and other select organizations or institutions. Their academies include many interesting educational activities and field trips. During an OBAP academy, students can expect to participate in activities that feature STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) components. They also include trips to aviation related facilities and receive tours of areas the general public normally never see. Also, their academies offer students the opportunity to perform actual flights in a general aviation aircraft. Traditionally, these flights are easily the highlights of a student's experience. ********* Born on St. Croix in 1929, James Jamesie Brewster is known throughout the Caribbean as the undisputed King of Scratch Band Music. He is known for his humorous, provocative and playful ompositions and for his lively performances. He has performed throughout the Caribbean and in Europe and has recorded a number of albums over the past fifty years. Surprisingly, when Jamesie was younger, his father only allowed him to play percussion and not guitar. Jamesie was determined to prove to his father that he was capable of playing guitar and so made his own out of a sardine can and a piece of white pine lumber. With a hand-carved keyboard and key-head and strings made out of twine from an old sack of flour, this guitar has become his signature instrument. In the six decades that have followed, Jamesie has continued to use this type of guitar when performing and recording music, although not exclusively. Jamesie is a Crucian from the instant he wakes up and in the way he eats, dresses, sits, smokes, talks. He makes kitchen implements out of mahogany, makes musical instruments out of food tins, makes melee out of news.
