The 2024 Emmy nominations are here, with lots of record-breaking nods and surprises to unpack — along with the strategy behind Disney’s acquisition of FX. What does the success of Shōgun and The Bear say about streaming? And does a new Bank of America report on Warner Bros. Discovery suggest… “unbundling”? Kim Masters and Matt Belloni break it down. Plus, in honor of Shōgun’s 25(!) Emmy nominations, Masters revisits her conversation with creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo. The series made history this week with its Emmy nomination for Outstanding Drama, becoming only the second non-English show ever considered. The husband-and-wife creative team talk about how they’ve been granted more control writing for television over feature films, and explain why FX took the risk on their very expensive, and heavily subtitled, period epic.

Succession is an American satirical black comedy-drama television series. The central plot revolves around the Roy family who owns the global media and entertainment conglomerate Waystar RoyCo. This series has won several accolades, including the Golden Globe for Best Television series - Drama, British Television Award for Best International Programme and The Primetime Emmy award for Outstanding Drama series. In today's episode, I shall give some trivia about the series that you probably didn't know about. Let's get going then!1. The beautiful, glossy interiors of the Roy duplex, complete with its white marble floors and ornate decor, is not a real apartment, but a set constructed in Long Island City's Silvercup Studios.2. Did you know that actor Brian Cox, who plays family patriarch Logan Roy, does not watch his own films and shows? He says that the enterprise is “madly depressing to say the least,"3. Many of the interactions that the characters have on the show are not scripted. Creator Jesse Armstrong revealed that he encourages his actors to improvise around the script, which he said helped the cast to be more comedic. 4. The wedding sequence for Shiv was filmed at a real English castle. The entire cast flew to England and shot the scene at Eastnor Castle in Herefordshire. If you haven't watched this yet then do so , it's streaming on Disney + HotstarThat's the OTTplay Now You Know for today, I shall be back again with another episode soon.. In the first Emmy podcast of the 2017-2018 television season I am joined by a familiar voice - Vox.com's critic-at-large Todd VanDerWerff. The first hour of this 90-minute podcast focuses heavily on the Outstanding Drama race which sees the return of Game of Thrones after taking a year off and now going up against last year's winner The Handmaid's Tale. How will that affect the return of Westworld? Its 22 nominations last year are likely to take a hit with Game of Thrones competing directly with it in multiple categories. Delving into comedy finds a lot of talk about Roseanne's ratings-bonanza return, the chances for One Day at a Time to stake its Emmy claim and whether or not reboot fever (that also includes Will & Grace) will find its way to nominations. With Veep out of contention this year, the door opens for Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (and Amy Sherman-Palladino into the Emmy conversation) as well as HBO still having four comedies to choose from in Silicon Valley, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Insecure and their freshman show Barry. We also talk about how FX could position Pamela Adlon and Better Things to have a much-needed conversation about Louis C.K. from one of the people closest to him. Finally, Todd makes a desperate plea for...well, I'll just let you listen and hear for yourself. This podcast runs 1h 32m with opening and closing music. Opening music: Westworld theme by Ramin Djawadi Closing music: "This Is It," by Gloria Estefan - theme song for One Day at a Time

Jamey Giddens shares his own personal memories of his hero. The PC gang dives into the 67 Annual Emmy Awards and Viola Davis' historic win as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Why did General Hospital's Nancy Lee Grahn attack Davis' acceptance speech and claim the How to Get Away With Murder star has never been discriminated against? The PC gang dish Game of Thrones winning Outstanding Drama and Olive Kitteridge winning Outstanding Limited Series. The PC wraps up the podcast by revealing which new and returning TV series they are looking forward to most.
2015 PRIMETIME EMMYS SPECIAL! The one where Mark Humphries and Molk look at the winners, losers and hosting performance of Andy Samberg at the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards. Most wins were expected or at least pleasant surprises (Jeffrey Tambor for TRANSPARENT, Jon Hamm for MAD MEN, & Peter Dinklage for GAME OF THRONES for example). No real WTF moments other than the big Outstanding Drama win by GAME OF THRONES - against MAD MEN, BETTER CALL SAUL and more. There was that moment where they ran an In Memoriam segment for shows that left us in the last year... and spoiled the end of Nurse Jackie for Australian viewers. The dangers of delaying TV shows into Australia. Netflix fared OK but not great (1 win) & Amazon Prime took home 2 thanks to TRANSPARENT. HBO cleaned up thanks to GoT, VEEP & OLIVE KITTERIDGE - the latter gifting Bill Murray an Emmy. Samberg more than handled the pressure of hosting one of the biggest gigs in TV. As you'll hear from this chat there was so much more than went on and most of it was pretty great. Taylor, Part 1: Trek. In 1992, Michael Piller turned his attention towards his new Star Trek series, Deep Space Nine. This left a void in the Next Generation writer's room. That void was filled by Jeri Taylor. Under her guidance, the last two season of TNG produced some the best Trek of all-time, and earned the series its only Emmy nomination for Outstanding Drama. On the strength of that work, Taylor was given the task of creating the next Star Trek series, Voyager, which she also ran for the first four seasons. In this episode of Commentary: Trek Stars, we begin a new series which looks at Taylor's work as a television writer/producer. In our first part, Mike, Max, and John are joined by Charlynn Schmiedt of To The Journey to examine Taylor's work in Trek. We discuss her first episode, her TNG highlights, her work as a showrunner on TNG, and the creation of Voyager. On today’s super-sized Daytime Confidential episode Luke, Jamey, Jillian and Regan react to Disney’s shocking decision to axe SOAPnet in favor of Disney Jr. What does this mean for the three ABC soaps and specifically One Life to Live? Jamey reveals what multiple industry insiders are telling him about the true state of soaps and how much time the genre really has. The DC gang then dives into all the 2010 Daytime Emmy Nominations and react to some of the–dare we say it–“shocking” omissions.
