Many of us like to take a walk in our favorite national park, whether it's a short stroll down one of the boardwalks at Yellowstone National Park, the hike to the top of Old Rag at Shenandoah National Park, or up the Mist Trail at Yosemite National Park, we like to get out and experience parks up close. As you might imagine, there are walks in the National Park System, and then there are walks. Kevin Fedarko and his photographic sidekick Pete McBride took one of those “other” hikes in Grand Canyon National Park. And it didn't initially go as planned. While Fedarko raised some serious blisters on his feet that required duct tape to protect, McBride almost needed a medical evacuation from the backcountry.  Still, the hike - or rather hikes - generated a compelling book from Fedarko titled, appropriately enough, “A Walk in the Park: The True Story of a Spectacular Misadventure in the Grand Canyon”.

If you're a longtime Mountain & Prairie listener, then you'll definitely remember Pete McBride. He's a renowned photographer, filmmaker, and author, and he's joined me on the podcast twice before– once to discuss his epic hike of the length of the Grand Canyon, and then to chat about his global search for silence in a very loud world. I'm glad to say that he's back again, and this time, we're chatting about his backyard river– the mighty Colorado– and the challenges, opportunities, and realities facing the people and wildlife that depend on it. - Pete's newest book is titled “The Colorado River: Chasing Water,” and it features Pete's stunning photography and insightful essays, along with a foreword by Nick Paumgarten and an introduction by Kevin Fedarko. The book follows the Colorado River from its headwaters in the Rocky Mountains all the way down to the Colorado River Delta, where it peters out just before reaching the Gulf of California. - I've read a lot of books about the Colorado River and water in the West, but “Chasing Water” opened my eyes to a number of very specific and sometimes-maddening challenges facing the Colorado River Basin. The book delves into issues such as the unchecked exportation of water-intensive alfalfa to foreign countries, how dust leads to increased evaporation and water loss, as well as more optimistic topics, such as how Las Vegas has become an imperfect-yet-inspiring case study in responsible water conservation. But at its core, the book demonstrates Pete's deep love and respect for the Colorado River, and showcases his two decades of dedication to telling the story of this world-famous waterway. - We met up at Pete's house in Basalt, overlooking the Roaring Fork River, and talked about all things water and conservation. We started by talking about Pete's father, and how his advice many years ago led Pete to shift his focus from global adventure photography to the Colorado River. We discussed the disconnect between people and their water sources, the challenge of using an over-appropriated water source to grow food for an entire country, Pete's firsthand experience observing changes in the river and surrounding landscape, his work with Indigenous communities throughout the basin, and his preferences between photography, filmmaking, and writing. We also discuss some of his recent favorite books, and much, much more. - Be sure to check out the episode notes for a full list of everything we discussed and links to all of Pete's books. - A big thanks to Pete for graciously letting me barge into his house and hassle him with questions yet again, and thank you for listening.  --- Pete McBride The Colorado River: Chasing Water by Pete McBride Seeing Silence: The Beauty of the World's Quietest Places by Pete McBride The Grand Canyon: Between River and Rim by Pete McBride Into the Grand Canyon documentary Full episode notes & links: https://mountainandprairie.com/pete-mcbride-3/ --- TOPICS DISCUSSED: 3:30 - All the places Pete has seen in the Colorado River watershed 6:30 - How Pete's dad influenced Pete's career  11:30 - The immense changes to the Colorado River over the course of Pete's father's lifetime 13:00 - Reconciling how much of the West's water comes from the Colorado, and how few people know it  14:30 - Pete's hope for his new book 18:00 - Pete's style of writing for this visual book  21:00 - Discussing how much Colorado River water goes to cattle and cattle feed, and the water challenges that face agriculture 29:00 - The impact of dust on Rocky Mountain snow, and how that impacts the Colorado River 34:30 - Highlighting an unexpected water conservation success story: Las Vegas, and how southwestern cities can start conserving their water.  39:00 - How many times Colorado River water has been reused along its trek to Mexico, and discussing the state of the Colorado River Delta 44:45 - How Peter wants to divide his time between books and films, and a discussion about “earning” hope 53:00 - Pete's work with Indigenous communities' access to Colorado River Water 1:01:00 - Pete's book recommendations --- ABOUT MOUNTAIN & PRAIRIE: Mountain & Prairie - All Episodes Mountain & Prairie Shop Mountain & Prairie on Instagram Upcoming Events About Ed Roberson Support Mountain & Prairie Leave a Review on Apple Podcasts

Pete McBride is an award-winning photographer and filmmaker whose work is regularly featured by National Geographic, Smithsonian, The Nature Conservancy, and other renowned institutions. His most recent book is titled “Seeing Silence: The Beauty of the World's Most Quiet Places,” and it features photographs and stories from more than two decades of his adventures on all seven continents. “Seeing Silence” uses stunning imagery and engaging storytelling to highlight the importance of places free of man-made noise, it and educates the reader on how quickly silence is disappearing from the world. - For more than twenty years, Pete has been using his skills as a storyteller to inspire action on a wide variety of conservation issues. He has highlighted the multitude of threats facing the Grand Canyon in both his documentary "Into the Grand Canyon" and his book "Grand Canyon: Between River and Rim." He's also documented the West's ongoing water crisis by focusing on the myriad of challenges affecting the Colorado River basin–making the important but sometimes confusing topic of water in the West accessible to a broader audience. And now, with "Seeing Silence," he's turned his focus to noise pollution and natural sounds, and I personally learned a lot from the book and this conversation. - This is Pete's second appearance on the podcast, so if you'd like to learn more about his personal backstory and adventures in the Grand Canyon, you can find a link to that conversation in the episode notes. In this conversation, we go deep into Pete's new obsession with silence and natural sounds, and why noise pollution is such a critical conservation issue. We started out talking about Pete's expedition to South Georgia Island back in March of 2020 and how he had to make a hasty escape from the island when Covid descended on the world. We talk about his experience during Covid, and how the pandemic shifted his interests from the visual to the auditory. We discuss how artificial noise affects wildlife, why Pete feels a responsibility not to share specific wilderness locations on social media, how Pete's family keeps him grounded, the larger purpose that drives his professional work, his recent photography work in Lake Powell, and we also included some sounds that Pete recorded during his South Georgia Island expedition. - It was great to chat with Pete again, and I'd encourage you to check out "Seeing Silence"– it's an excellent book. And be sure the check out the episode notes for a complete list of all the topics we discussed and links to everything. Thanks to Pete for taking the time, and thanks to you for listening. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/177 Roger Fletcher is here to share the history of the drift boat and how it all started back in the early 20th century with a few river guides that needed a better boat for whitewater.  We discover the connection between the Rogue, Mckenzie, Grand Canyon Dories and why the name drift boat stuck over the river dorie. Roger describes how the drift boat design came to be through a few key people over the last 100 years.  Roger is the leading authority on drift boats so is very exciting to have him on the podcast today. Drift Boat History Show Notes  - I noted Jerry Briggs and the Colorado River dories. - Milo Thomson used the old scow boat and were the first boats on the river until 1925.  Milo and the early guides on the river were there to focus on drift boat fishing and guiding their clients. - We hear the story of Keith Steele and the first boats built for the Colorado River and Martin Litton - I noted the Pete Mcbride video and Martin's boat. Drift Boat Plans - We talk about the Dorie Book by John Gardner.  In this episode we didn't go deep into drift boat Plans but you can check out Drift Boats and Dories for 10 full plan sets and how to build your own boat. There are a number of drift boat plans in Roger's book but there are other resources around the web.  There are various boat school and classes that you can take advantage of. - Veltie Pruitt is the guy who built the old scow for the river. Veltie shortened the boat and made it much lighter of a boat. - in 1925 Prince Helfrich saw veltie go by in the new 13 foot boat.  So Veltie built a boat for Prince. - Woody hindman moved in around 1934 to the area from Texas.  Woody is maybe the most important person to contemporary design.  He built the first double ender and is basically what we see today in a contemporary drift boat. - We talk about Ray Heater and the 14' rapid robert has great carrying capacity and can get up on step - Joe Koffler with Koffler Boats talked about getting up on plane with a sled in a recent podcast we put together. - colorado rapids on the deschtues - The lava falls dorie and the boat rolling and dumping.  And if you thought you needed a huge drift boat to run the Grand Canyon, think again.  This guy ran it in a 13 foot drift boat. - We talked about Roger's Martin Litton interview and why Martin was a bigger than life figure. - Tom kaarhus played a big role in the evolution of drift boats by innovating plywood as the material of choice for drift boats. - Vintage wooden boat tours over in Jackson Wyoming - We talk about my Ray's River Dorie boat and how to refinish an old boat. - The winkle bar boat was a lot like the log driver boat from Maine.  This is the boat that migrated across the country and landed in Oregon. - you can get the book Drift Boats and river dories here at Anglers Book supply. - Here's the old photo of Martin's son in an early Colorado River Dorie. Woody Hindman was the biggest influence on drift boats He is the guy who created the double ender which is what has given us the current drift boat design.  His boat of choice became the 16' double ender.  He added the motor on the transom and is now the boat we see for most wood boats and drift boats. Drift Boats for Sale Resources You can go to Ray's River Dories for a new wood boat or Jason Hayes on the McKenzie.  Then over to Montana where many are stih and glue. Wooden Boat People is a great place to find and sell wooden boats. We also touched on Don Hill boats and the effect on the McKenzie boat style. DH Drift Boats is now owned by another person. - The emerald mile and the run. You can find Roger at RiversTouch.com Drift Boat History Resources Noted in the Show John Gadner and the Dorie Book Drift Boats and River Dories Drift Boat Videos Noted in the Show Rogue River Whitewater Video - Great Views Drift Boat History Conclusion We discover the history of the drift boat from the guys who wrote the book on it.  Roger Fletcher shares some great stories including how a little-known boat builder from grants pass produced 35 of the greatest Colorado river dories in history.

We also speak with Vitale about her career trajectory and commitment to telling the stories of endangered species and the humans around them. We discuss her work photographing Sudan, the last male white rhinoceros in existence, and her incredible series about pandas in China. We also ask Vitale how she bridges the gap (or perceived gap) between journalism and advocacy photography and about her commitment to long-term engagement with the stories she covers. Vitale also addresses the changing dynamics of print journalism and the need to find funding for her projects, and we briefly mention her work as a Nikon ambassador. The dearth of tourism to many protected wildlife parks around the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic has brought conservation efforts to a crisis point and the Prints for Nature Sale, with images by Art Wolfe, Steve Winter, Pete McBride, Alison Wright (all past guests of the podcast) and many other great photographers, is a way that lovers of wildlife and of photography can help. Pete McBride is a Native Coloradan who has spent two decades studying the world with a camera. A self-taught photographer, filmmaker, writer, and public speaker, he has traveled on assignment to over 75 countries for the National Geographic Society, Smithsonian, Google, The Nature Conservancy, and others. After a decade documenting remote expeditions from Everest to Antarctica, McBride decided to focus his cameras closer to home on a subject closer to his heart—his backyard river, the Colorado. His latest project replaced rafting with walking—a lot of it. Over the course of a year, McBride hiked the entire length of Grand Canyon National Park — over 750 miles without a trail — to highlight development challenges facing this iconic landscape. After completing the journey, National Geographic named him and his hiking companion “Adventurers of the Year.” He and Zuckerman discuss solitude, silence as the think tank of the soul, his decibel reading hobby, meditation as a way to control fear, a recent heart surgery, using photography to teach about health — our own and that of nature, achieving seemingly impossible things, the hooks of stories, the lessons in imperfection, and only doing things that make you nervous! Pete McBride is a National Geographic photographer, filmmaker, and writer who tells untold stories from some of the world’s wildest places. Most recently, Pete and his friend, author Kevin Fedarko, hiked the entire 800-mile length of the Grand Canyon, documenting the journey for his forthcoming book Grand Canyon: Between the River and Rim. The book is an amazing combination of breathtaking photography, adventure travelogue, and an examination of some of the conservation challenges facing the legendary national park. Given the fact that more people have stood on the moon than hiked the length of the Grand Canyon, it’s no surprise that this book is a must-read. • Growing up in Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley, Pete spent his childhood skiing, playing hockey, and working on his family's ranch. After college on the east coast, he cut his teeth in journalism at the High Country News, where he discovered his proclivity for photography. From there, he set out on a series of adventures, camera in hand, and with a lot of hard work and hustle, he eventually sold his first story to National Geographic. After traveling the world as a photojournalist and having some close calls in Somalia and on Mt. Everest, Pete decided to focus his efforts on his “backyard river”—the Colorado River. Pete seems to have found his true calling in this iconic waterway—he has combined his artistic eye, journalistic perspective, and pursuit of adventure to become one of the Colorado River’s greatest advocates. • Pete and I met up in Aspen just before he headed to the airport to catch a flight. Even though our time was limited, we managed to cover a wide range of fun topics. We dig into the details of his Grand Canyon hike, and Pete tells a scary story of coming way too close to death early in the trip. We talk about his relationship with Kevin Fedarko, and how their differing personalities complement each other well on hardcore adventures. Pete shares more about his career as a photographer, and how he sees his strong work ethic as the key to his success. Pete also gives a great overview of the challenges facing the Colorado River, and he offers some solid book recommendations for folks who want to learn more about water issues in the West. • Hopefully I’ll get Pete back on for a Part 2 at some point in the future, because as you’ll hear, there’s still plenty more to discuss. For now, I really appreciate him taking the time to chat during such a busy time and hope you all enjoy the interview. ••• http://mountainandprairie.com/pete-mcbride/ ••• TOPICS DISCUSSED: 3:00 - How Pete describes his work 4:10 - Following the length of the Colorado River 5:45 - Genesis of the idea to hike the Canyon 6:20 - Grand Canyon adventure explained 7:55 - Partnership with Kevin Fedarko 11:00 - Close to death in the Canyon 12:15 - Surprises from the adventure 14:40 - The night sky at the bottom of the Canyon 17:20 - Ecology of the Canyon 19:40 - Camera gear on the trip 20:45 - Battle with hyponatremia 22:05 - New book 27:25 - Pete’s personal background 29:40 - Working at the High Country News 31:15 - First photojournalist assignment 33:00 - Talent vs hard work 35:20 - Surfing and Central America 37:00 - Photographers that Pete admires 39:40 - Conservation and the Colorado River 47:20 - Best books about water in the West

On this episode of the podcast we get the opportunity to speak with National Geographic photographer, filmmaker, and writer Pete McBride.  Pete tells us about growing up on a ranch outside of Aspen, Colorado and the first time he remembers picking up a camera.  From his early days as a kid helping his dad herd cattle, to all the days he spent skiing in the mountains, he felt a calling to study land management and the environment around him.  It was this interest, and trying to write for publications on those topics, that finally led him to photography.  Pete quickly gravitated towards travel, adventure, and expedition work.  He wanted to take photos of the far away places and people he had always dreamed about, but he soon began to become disenfranchised with what he would call "adventure porn" and realized there was a story in his own back yard.  Although he had grown up around the Colorado River, Pete realized how little he really understood about it's history and it's destination.  He soon set out to produce a story about the river which would lead him on a path to becoming what National Geographic would call a "freshwater hero".  Since then, Pete has continued to document rivers, people, places, and the story of the planet, and has inspired many others to look at the world around them a little closer.  During this conversation we got the chance to ask Pete what keeps him from getting burned out, how to present a story and not just photography, why he stayed in Colorado after all the years of travel, and what advice he gives to those dreaming of one day working for National Geographic.  So enjoy our conversation with someone out there helping to tell the stories that need to be told.   To Learn More About Pete McBride Visit: http://www.petemcbride.com   About Visual Revolutionary: http://www.visualrevolutionary.com Because we are interested in people's story, and not what type of gear they use, we introduce a new much needed podcast in the world of photography and filmmaking.  Featuring in-depth conversations with some of the world's leading photographers, filmmakers, and other visual artists, we are bringing you the backstory on how they got to where they are today.

In the fall of 2015, photographer Pete McBride and writer Kevin Fedarko embarked upon a journey to rally support to protect one of our most awe-inspiring national treasures: the Grand Canyon. Their method? A 700+ mile sectional thru-hike of the wilderness that lies between the rim and the river. They knew the trek would challenge them, but they had no idea how quickly and completely the canyon would leave them demoralized and physically destroyed. The two of them were contemplating giving up when, as Kevin puts it, 'A miracle happened'.  Today, a story about three people who have dedicated the better part of their lives to developing a unique skill--and a project so complicated and important that it required their cumulative experience to pull it off. Award-winning photographer and filmmaker Pete McBride will present his ongoing work on watersheds, rivers and freshwater around the world. Called a Freshwater Hero by "National Geographic", McBride will show short films and imagery from the Ganges River (sacred) and the Colorado (scarce) — both of which he has traveled source to sea — in an effort to raise awareness of the challenges freshwater faces globally. His latest project, showcased in the July issue of "Outside Magazine", highlights the pulse flow from last spring to restore the Colorado River Delta. Joining a group of river lovers, they became the first to traverse this now dry delta by standup paddle-board— a symbolic gesture to celebrate the temporary return of a river. Pete McBride
