The oura ring is a wearable device created by a group of finnish entrepreneurs. It is one of the most incredible wearable devices developed up until this day and has more than one million users world wide. Leading CEOs, athletes, founders or biohackers are using the oura ring to track sleep and recovery. It is widely considered to be the best sleep tracker available. On this episode we are talking with Petteri Lahtela who is one of the Co-Founders and the founding CEO of Oura Health, the company behind the Oura ring. Petteri acted as the CEO until mid-2018 and as Chief Innovation Officer and President until mid-2020 when he departed the company together with his co-founder colleagues. Petteri talks us through the early years of founding Oura, when the small team from Finnland went early on into the US market. He tells us some interesting stories like how famous tech CEOs send him private messages to invest into Oura or how Oura got free marketing impressions worth millions by Prince Harry wearing the Oura Ring. Petteri is a genuine person who cares a lot about building meaningful things. I was deeply impressed by our conversation.
Puhetta omistamisesta -podcastin vieraana on tällä kertaa Ouran perustaja Petteri Lahtela.
Markkinoilla on hyvin monenlaisia kuluttajille suunnattuja itsensä mittaamiseen tarkoitettuja laitteita.
Oura – it's like Patagonia, but for your finger. Especially in the Nordics, all the business people wear these ring-shaped miniature computers night and day, optimizing everything from eating, sleeping, and training to working. But how did the Finnish brand make it in the hard, hard hardware industry? How did Oura engineers use real-life user stories to develop the product? Is knowing your optimal bedtime the most meaningful life lesson you can learn? And WHERE does the self-monitoring trend go in the future? Will we know so much about our bodies that we'll become neurotic, not healthy? What's up next for Oura? Let Co-Founder, President and Chief Innovation Officer Petteri Lahtela of Oura tell you.
Last February, my wife and I were attending a health-related symposium and noted that many of the speakers were wearing an OURA ring. We learned that the OURA ring was one of the latest entries in the field of wearable technology. What was most intriguing for us was how many of our friends described the insights they were gaining in terms of the length and quality of their sleep. So we decided to buy a couple of these and learn, firsthand, what all the excitement was about. Our level of understanding of not only our day-to-day activities, but, perhaps more importantly, the characteristics of our sleep experience, was not only revealing but powerfully empowering.
The founder and CEO of Oura Ring, Pettei Lahtela, joined Isak and William for a discussion about his company, health tracking and human health in general.

We all know that quality is more important than quantity. But it’s tricky to determine quality when it comes to something like sleep. How restorative was the eight hours you got last night? Did that sleep allow your body to recover enough to do the training session you have scheduled for today? Petteri’s passion for designing solutions that offer meaningful health benefits led him to create Oura, the world’s first wellness ring. Oura combines sophisticated design, ground-breaking technology and three decades of research to guide users in improving their sleep, health and readiness to perform. Today Petteri describes the differences between the first generation Oura ring and the new version coming out in April. As wearables increasingly rise in popularity (the market is expected to double in 2021), users will have to choose carefully what they decide to invest in and for what reason. You only have enough human "real estate" for one smartwatch, for one pair of smart glasses, and for one set of smart earphones. The Oura Ring, in contrast, takes up only one finger and is capable of continuously tracking your heart rate, breathing variance, and body temperature in order to bring you longitudinal data that will enable you to gain restorative, impactful sleep. Petteri Lahtela, the CEO of Oura Ring, joins us this week to share the cutting-edge technology behind the ring and its implications beyond sleep. Is one finger really a better sensor point than the entire wrist (ala Apple Watch)? What else can heart rate variability tell us about the performance and state of our bodies? How can we use information from multiple biosignals to optimize sleep? We discuss and ponder over it all in this hour-long episode. Why his father introduced him to weight and strength training when he was just 13 years old. The secret sauce to becoming a CrossFit athlete without getting injured and burnt out. How Anders' energy dwindled and when he faced several injuries after doing CrossFit for so many years. Why Anders could work out intensely, but couldn't even relax at the beach and how that affected his mindset. How meditating and breath work has allowed him to really pay more attention to the world around him. Why it's easy to attach ourselves to something like CrossFit or Yoga yet the authenticity of those industries has been lost over the years. How he came up with the idea of Yin Strength Training to live a healthier life. Why focusing on transitions between work and home can give us space and help us to deal with everything that's going on in our lives. What he's learned from going to the gym and what it continues to teach him about life. The importance of always showing up and being present in wellness and relationships. Why children deserve to be involved in health and wellness at an early age. How he's helping people program their life for better wellness through movement and personalized training. His progressive journey of getting comfortable with meditation through daily practice. How wearables and technology are helping us be more mindful about our wellness. What we can do to be more mindful and present with everyone we come into contact with every day. Taking Breath, Balance, and Behavior and using them in programs to help people begin working on their breathing to help change those who are in pain. Power Quotes From The Show "Fitness goes well past the movements, tissues, and joints. It's about behavioral health, but how do we even begin creating good habits? A lot of people will get burned out because they think being fit means going all out every time they exercise." - Anders Varner "Even though I've been meditating for over three years, I still struggle with focusing on my breath. That's what makes me come back to it because it's such a skill to be able to slow down and be in the moment. The slower you breathe, the better you get at it and that in itself is a challenge." - Anders Varner "Meditating really helps to peel back the layers that allow you to uncover ultimate truths, what motivates you, where you want your life to go, and how to create your next path. You don't want to attach yourself to the next big thing that comes along or continue to be someone who is unhealthy. Work through some of your stories and then rebuild from there." - Anders Varner "When I opened my business, I lost all of my friends that I used to hang out with at the gym. I went from about 300 to 4 friends because I had to change. I had to move on from my old life and recreate everything about me. Everyone has that opportunity to change; you just have to be comfortable with your own growth and know that you have to keep going so that you can be authentic to yourself." - Anders Varner "Pain is a response that happens because something is not right. The brain doesn't have enough mechanisms to handle those dysfunctional movement patterns or inflammation so it sends the pain signal. Many people need a medical doctor, but most people just need to relax and get rid of all the negative energy in their lives. They need to slow down, unwind, and focus on their breathing as a way to heal." - Anders Varner Links From Today's Show: Anders Varner Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube Yin Strength Training The Low Back Fix Facebook Twitter YouTube Movement Rx Facecbook Twitter Instagram YouTube The Performance Lifestyle by Anders Varner Warrior by Theresa Larson and Alan Eisenstock Science Agrees: Five Facts to Fix Your Lower Back Scaling and Modifying Workouts for Lower Back Pain San Diego Athletics Whole Life Challenge The Headspace App The Joe Rogan Experience Podcast The Life Extension Nutrition Center WFR 160 Petteri Lahtela of Oura Ring WFR 134 Dr. Andy Galpin WFR 105 Dr. John Sullivan About Anders Varner A San Diego-based movement specialist with more than twenty years of training and coaching experience, Anders Varner is the co-founder of The Low Back Fix. Power Quotes From The Show "On one side, we have technology that's making life easier. On the other side, we still have to remain conscience about our freewill and choice." - Josh Trent "Training the human body often gets overlooked and it's a stepping stone. People just aren't connected to their bodies like they should be. They want to go all out at the gym or try the latest trendy informational workout just because so-and-so said they had great results. A fit tech device isn't going to give you overnight results. You can use it to aide you in your mission, but it's still your own wellness journey." - Justin Andrews "Wearable devices give us so much great information, but sometimes it can be too much and it can be a distraction from our health goals. Just because you use a wearable, is it really going to make you change your life? As Dani Pardi has said, "Knowing is not the same thing as doing." Actually, if you know and you don't do, it's the same as not knowing." - Josh Trent "The data from our wearbles is like a check-in mirror. It forces us to see how we're showing up and that's where the real change occurs. If you want a real life change, just checking in with what you did yesterday to know how you can improve today can be enough." - Josh Trent "You can measure sleep, but what are all the other variables that are contributing to it like stress? Maybe on paper your sleep looks good, but you have to consider all these other factors. Once we look at all of that, we can create the best plan to move forward." - Justin Andrews Links From Today's Show: Consumer Technology Association Show (CES) Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube Justin Andrews Facebook Instagram Linkedin Axon Mind Pump Media WFR 124 Justin Andrews & Yaron Hadad WFR 128 Mind Pump 2018 FitnessTech Summit NuCalm SleepScore Max Yaron Hadad The Sleep Doctor's Diet Plan by Dr. Michael Breus ResMed Fitbit Healbe GoBe2 Joove Red Light Therapy Halo Sport Bigger Leaner Stronger by Mike Matthews WFR 162 Dr. Jordan Shallow & Dr. Jordan Jiunta WFR 160 Petteri Lahtela of Oura Ring WFR 159 Dr. Heidi Forbes Öste WFR 150 Dr. Joe Anderson & Andrea Duchonovic of LEVL WFR 140 Chris Kresser WFR 134 Andy Galpin WFR 088 Dan Pardi WFR 011 Ariel Garten of Muse About Justin Andrews Justin Andrews has an incredible passion to disrupt the personal training industry and create ground breaking programs and tools that fitness professionals and clients alike can benefit from. What chronotyping is and how to discover your chronotype: lion, dolphin, bear, and wolf. How your chronotype can help you decide when to work out each day. The myth that you have to go to bed at the exact same time as everyone else. The new Generation 2 Oura ring including its benefits and how it's different than the Generation 1 Oura ring. How the Oura ring has been designed to not include EMF and be safer for the user to wear every day. The design of the Oura ring and how it's been created to collect an optimal amount of data. Why skin temperature is a key factor to quantification and biohacking. How the Oura ring can help prompt you to make life changes. What Stanford University discovered through their research and study on the Oura ring Power Quotes From The Show "The Generation 2 Oura ring is now by far the most advanced variable in the world as far as the amount of meaningful insights it can provide to the user. It will help the user reflect on their health and become more self-aware of what choices are good for them." - Petteri Lahtela "The Oura ring has helped people to understand that sometimes less is more. Athletes know that they really need to focus on resting. Therefore, the winner of a competition won't necessarily be the one who works the hardest or spends the most time training. The one who recovers faster and is the best at it is the winner." - Petteri Lahtela "The Oura ring and app gives you a daily activity target based on how you recovered while sleeping the night before. It doesn't push you to walk 10,000 steps every day. Instead, it gives you a target based on how your body is responding to the previous day's physical and mental strain." - Petteri Lahtela "This technology is especially beneficial for people who live busy lives. It's a relief to understand your own body in the context of your schedule. It allows you to know your body's individual capacity and what it needs to properly recover from a lot of work or stress." - Petteri Lahtela Links From Today's Show: ŌURA Twitter Facebook Instagram YouTube Vimeo Petteri Lahtela Twitter LinkedIn Scientific Background Discoveries of Molecular Mechanisms Controlling the Circadian Rhythm The Power of When by Michael Breus Elite HRV Slush Startup Event Bulletproof Biohacking Conference Biohacker Summit Dr. Peter Diamandis of XPRIZE Tim Ferriss Wired Magazine Dr. Peter Attia of the Eating Academy WFR #150 Dr. Joe Anderson & Andrea Duchonovic of LEVL WFR #146 Alex Fergus WFR #129 Gretchen Rubin WFR #126 Jason Moore WFR #125 Dr. Kirk Parsley About Petteri Lahtela Petteri Lahtela is a CEO and Co-Founder of ŌURA. Petteri Lahtela johtaa yhtä Suomen mielenkiintoisimmista terveysteknologian startupeista.
