We put off work because work, for some reason, puts us off. Synopsis: Every first and third Monday of the month, get a headstart in your personal finance and career with The Straits Times. Procrastination: The frustratingly human tendency to postpone work we can and should get started on earlier. It may seem tempting to berate ourselves for being lazy, unmotivated or disorganised. Instead, procrastination is actually our brains trying to shield us from uncomfortable feelings, putting a hidden toll on ourselves. In this episode, host and ST correspondent Tay Hong Yi hosts an expert on the psychology of people who work together in groups. She shares with us what research tells us about procrastination and other quirks of our mind that permeate our work and daily life. She also goes into the “dark things” she relishes researching, such as why people are cynical at work, and the fallout from narcissist leaders. The guest is: Dr Ruchi Sinha, organisational psychologist and associate professor (practice) at Nanyang Business School, Nanyang Technological University Highlights (click/tap above): 2:00 What is procrastination and what type of procrastinator are you? 11:06 What are some strategies to help you manage procrastination? 14:07 Procrastination is about misplaced priorities too 16:22 Is it any easier for Dr Sinha to beat procrastination, as an expert? 17:05 The “pretty dark stuff” Dr Sinha studies, such as narcissism at workplaces 23:04 How does Dr Sinha translate research in her field to real life? Meet Hercules and Ned, the border collies fending off wildlife at West Virginia's busiest airport

Two border collies named Hercules and Ned have quite the spacious office at West Virginia's busiest airport. The border collies and their handler make daily patrols along the mile-long airfield to ensure birds and other wildlife stay away from planes and keep passengers and crew safe. Hercules is also the chief ambassador, soaking in affection from passengers inside the terminal while calming some nervously waiting to board a flight at West Virginia International Yeager Airport. Chris Keyser, the dogs' handler and the airport's wildlife specialist, said preventing a bird from hitting a plane "can make a difference for someone's life." Collisions between wildlife and planes are common at airports nationwide. With that in mind, Yeager management in 2018 bought Hercules at the recommendation of a wildlife biologist. Hercules spent the first 18 months of his life training to herd geese and sheep around his birthplace at Charlotte, North Carolina-based Flyaway Geese, which teaches border collies to help businesses address nuisance wildlife problems. When Hercules stepped onto Charleston's airfield for the first time, "I held my breath," Flyaway Geese owner Rebecca Gibson said. "But boy, he took hold of the reins. It was his place." "He's done an amazing job and has just been a great dog for them. We're very proud of him." Now 8, Hercules has some help. Ned was 2 when he was welcomed into the fold last year from another kennel where he trained to herd goats and geese. Ned has shadowed Hercules, following commands from Keyser and learning safety issues such as not venturing onto the runway. About 19,000 strikes involving planes and wildlife occurred at U.S. airports in 2023, of which 95% involved birds, according to a Federal Aviation Administration database. From 1988 to 2023, wildlife collisions in the U.S. killed 76 people and destroyed 126 aircraft. At the Charleston airport, wildlife-plane incidents vary each year from a few to a couple of dozen. "Anytime a plane hits a bird, it has to be inspected, and it causes a delay in the flight," Keyser said. "And sometimes you don't make your connecting flights. So, that's how important it is to keep everything going smooth." This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Lessons from 30 years of successfully fending off mines in an Ecuadorian cloud forest

Carlos Zorrilla has been living in an Ecuadorian cloud forest since the 1970s, and his last 30 years there have been spent fighting mining companies seeking to extract its large copper deposits. He and his community have successfully fought such proposals by multiple firms in one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet, but sometimes at great personal risk, he tells Mongabay's podcast. While his organization, Defensa y Conservación Ecológica de Intag (DECOIN), and allies in the local community notched a major victory against mining there in a 2023 court case, he explains they're still not out of the proverbial woods. "Every day, I have to think about mining [and] I'm not exaggerating, my life now revolves around mining. Even though we won a case, I know they're going to come back because the copper's there, and there's a lot of demand for copper." His advice to anyone who wants to protect their community from mining is to go on the offensive, early and aggressively, comparing the strategy to how one might view treating cancer. "You have to think of it like a cancer, that you need to treat it immediately and you need to look for signs that your body, in this case, your community, is sick,” Zorrilla says. “To fall in God's kingdom is to be about good deeds without great love. It is giving up the better part.” – @andrejosiah Pst Andre kicked off our Vision Series today with a message on Fending Off Lukewarmness. Sharing from the story of the church of Ephesus that started with passionate love for Jesus but eventually settled for routine faithfulness, it was a stark reminder of how easily we too can lose our zeal and fall into compromise. Jesus shows us the way back—by remembering what we've lost, repenting from the seriousness of sin, and returning to the works of first love. Let's rededicate ourselves to a rhythm of renewal, and rediscover a desire for God's love and life to fill our lives and community.

This is Zack Fuss, an investor at Irenic Capital, and today we're breaking down Lululemon Athletica. The Canadian company, founded by Chip Wilson in 1998, has grown from a pop-up store in a yoga class to a $45 billion apparel business. Along the way, it pioneered the trend of athleisure and forever changed what women and men wear to work out in. To break down the business, I am joined by John Zolidis, president and founder of Quo Vadis Capital. We explore the origins of Lululemon's direct to consumer growth strategy, how it has remained relevant in an industry known for fleeting success, and how its business model compares to apparel giants like Nike. Please enjoy this business breakdown of Lululemon.  For the full show notes, transcript, and links to the best content to learn more, check out the episode page here.  ----- This episode is brought to you by Tegus. In this discussion, Touré and David talk about the health benefits of airway hydration and how to breathe better in a dirty world. Together, they highlight FEND, an innovative new product that hydrates your airways and helps you breathe better. Believe it or not, we need salt to stay hydrated. We also need clean air and optimal breathing to promote longevity, productivity, optimal performance, holistic well-being, and a high quality of life. So, how can we do this?  Our guests are Touré Roberts and Dr. David Edwards. Touré is a best-selling author, entrepreneur, producer, pastor, and serial humanitarian. Dr. David Edwards is a Harvard Professor and Founder and CSO of FEND. Together, they're bringing impactful information along with this innovative health solution to communities around the country.   Follow Dr. David Edwards @davidedwardsphd Follow Touré Roberts @toureroberts Follow Chase on Instagram @chase_chewning Follow him on Twitter @chasechewning   Key Highlights Minority communities are disproportionately impacted by polluted air and dehydration. Bringing this information to people will save lives and improve the quality of life around the world. “I think that people are going to be FENDing the same way they're putting on deodorant in the future,” Touré says. Today, we're losing between 3-10 years of life because we're breathing dry, dirty air. When your airways dry out, your lungs can't filtrate properly. David breaks down the scientific research behind FEND and Touré shares why he became so passionate about changing the way we breathe. The duo details the shocking connection between air quality and asthma in children and minority populations, along with how this can be improved with simple technology and education. How do I know if FEND is right for me? David speaks on who should be using FEND, from athletes and frequent travelers to people with allergies or COPD, and the ways we can bring this health solution to the communities that need it most. How does your health change when you breathe better (when your airways are clean and hydrated)? David describes the symptoms of dry airways and how airway hydration improves all aspects of your health, like sleep, physical activity, and even mental health.   Episode resources: Get your free variety pack of Recharge with any purchase at https://www.DrinkLMNT.com/everforward  Revive your mitochondrial health with MitoPure and save 10% with code EVERFORWARD at https://www.TimelineNutrition.com/everforward  Cold weather and dehydration article Visit Toure's website Shop FEND Watch and subscribe on YouTube
