How much sleep do men over 40 really need? Most men over 40 should aim for 7–9 hours of total sleep per night, but the real goal is accumulating 3–4 hours of restorative sleep, which includes Deep Sleep (Slow Wave Sleep) and REM Sleep (Rapid Eye Movement Sleep). These are the sleep stages responsible for testosterone production, muscle repair, fat metabolism, memory consolidation, immune function, recovery, and healthy aging. Men who focus only on total sleep hours often miss the most important factor: sleep quality.Episode SummaryMost men think sleep is about getting seven to nine hours. But what if you've been focusing on the wrong metric? In this episode of the Over 40 Alpha Podcast, Funk Roberts reveals why restorative sleep may be one of the most overlooked health, fitness, and longevity tools available to men over 40, 50, and 60.Funk shares his personal experience discovering that despite sleeping seven to eight hours per night, his recovery scores remained poor until he began tracking and optimizing Deep Sleep and REM Sleep. He breaks down the four stages of sleep, explains how restorative sleep impacts testosterone, fat loss, muscle growth, brain health, emotional regulation, and recovery, and provides six practical strategies to dramatically improve sleep quality starting tonight. If you're struggling with low energy, poor recovery, belly fat, brain fog, low testosterone, or chronic fatigue, this episode may completely change how you think about sleep.Timestamps00:00 Welcome to Over 40 Alpha Answers01:15 Why most men focus on the wrong sleep metric03:50 Sleep quantity vs sleep quality06:55 Funk's personal WHOOP sleep breakthrough10:45 What is restorative sleep?18:45 Understanding the four stages of sleep20:45 Stage 1: Transition Sleep23:15 Stage 2: Preparation Sleep26:00 Stage 3: Deep Sleep (Slow Wave Sleep)30:35 Deep Sleep, testosterone, muscle growth and recovery39:55 Stage 4: REM Sleep42:05 REM Sleep and memory consolidation47:40 REM Sleep and emotional regulation49:10 REM Sleep and brain detoxification52:30 Sleep and testosterone research53:45 Sleep, hunger hormones and fat loss56:15 Why tracking sleep matters59:15 Strategy #1: Change your sleep identity01:02:05 Strategy #2: The 3-2-1 Rule01:06:20 Strategy #3: Optimize your sleep environment01:08:45 Strategy #4: Magnesium Glycinate01:10:05 Strategy #5: Morning sunlight01:10:55 Strategy #6: Consistent bedtime routine01:14:05 The real question men should ask about sleep01:15:15 Final thoughts and next stepsResources MentionedJoin the Over 40 Alpha Brotherhoodhttps://www.over40alpha.comOver 40 Supplementshttps://www.over40supplements.comUse Coupon Code:PODCAST15Get a WHOOP Wearablehttps://www.over40shred.com/whoopMen Over 40 Health Summithttps://www.menover40summit.com
Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Matt: Hi Dr Cabral, I'm constantly trying to improve my sleep but can rarely ever get more than 6 to 6 1/2 hours consistently. If I go to bed earlier, I wake up earlier ready to go. Right now I'm taking 2g of taurine, balanced zinc, 500mg magnesium, 100mg theanine, 50mg Apagenin and 3g of glycine. I have no problem falling asleep but consistently wake up around 3-4am. I recently added some Inositol to help get back to sleep but I can't really remember the last time I went to sleep and woke up the next morning by my alarm clock. Just to note, I'm 45 with 3 kids that also like to pop in our room in the middle of the night. Any tips to help get that 7-8 hours I need? Tricia: Hello Dr C! I'm 57 and I tested my estrogen and progesterone. I'm of course estrogen dominant. I started taking your progesterone support and gosh it is amazing! My sleep has gotten even better! My question is do you think I should take the estrogen supplement too to help balance the two? Are these usually lifetime supplements for post menopausal women? Thanks Kevin: Just received my annual labs back for annual physical and total Cholesterol is 299, Triglycerides 70, HDL 105, LDL 180, ratio 3.8, and LDL Direct at 182. I have Hashimoto disease, candida for past couple of years and mycotoxins from mold exposure. I cant afford to move out of house so I'm still exposed. I had a functional doctor but can no longer afford the out of pocket expenses. I was on cholestramine powder along with binders but stopped doing them last year because not helping. I'm really worried about having stroke or heart attack. I don't know where to start anymore and been told without moving nothings going to work. What do you recommend I do.? I plan on purchasing Proteolytic Enzymes with Nattokinase to hopefully reduce plaque. What tests do you think would be best for me? Sienna: Hi Dr. Cabral - hoping you can help! In a country where FM labs aren't an option + entering into mid-40's, surrounded by Perimenopause "fear". I have done your hormone HRA + apart from feeling like I get TRIGGERED a lot easier, I don't have more of the common symptoms (ie night sweats). My cycle the last 2 months was slightly longer but don't want to over think it. I am wondering if there are bloods that can help outline where we are in terms of our hormones (I know saliva is preferable)... I really want to support my hormones, and know you say we can do this naturally well into later life ie 60's! I know estrogen declines + ED is common - would appreciate markers to look at, ranges + if your wife couldn't test what you'd recommend for her :) Thank you for ALL you do! Sienna Rianna: Hi Dr. Cabral! Sleep it's an area I am REALLY focused on supporting - we know when we are tired everything is harder ;-) & I am all about energy as I move towards my mid-40's.. I track my sleep on Garmin + know you mention Deep Sleep (90 mins) + Rem Sleep (2+ hours) as ideals, but I am no where near there consistently. The only time I get quite close is during my detox. My HRV has improved considerably (almost doubled) since Jan(through substantially reducing alcohol intake + focusing on sleep hygiene). I average on 7 - 7.5 hours sleep, mostly right through or brief wake, + mostly feel great/rested. My REM sleep this morning was 0 minutes (??) - is that reall even possible? 80 mins deep, 6.5 hrs"light" - how much attention would you give it if you feel recharged? Tips? Thx for all you do! Tonight we invite you to fall asleep peacefully by a moonlit shoreline, under a calm cloudy night sky. The gently crashing waves create a soothing white noise effect, perfect for blocking out distracting sounds, while the peaceful ambient music creates a calming background to help you fall asleep. The music is centered around 963 Hz, a frequency known for promoting inner peace and higher awareness. Beneath it all is a layer of 8 Hz theta wave binaural beats, to guide the mind into a relaxed dreamlike state. For a version of this episode without binaural beats, check out the 8 Hour Sleep Music podcast. Thank you and sleep well!

For many of us, this coming weekend marks the start of Daylight Saving Time, when we “spring forward” and move our clocks ahead by an hour. While the extra evening daylight can be one of the joys of the summer months, the time change has been known to disrupt our sleep. Last year we sat down with neurobiologist Jamie Zeitzer, a leading expert on sleep, to talk about practical strategies for getting a better night's rest. As we approach this transition, it's the perfect time to revisit that conversation. We hope you'll add this episode to your podcast queue and give it another listen this weekend. You can sleep eight hours, follow all the usual tips, and still feel foggy and sore. If recovery isn't improving, the problem usually is the environment you're ignoring at bedtime. Matt takes a deep dive into REM sleep this week, highlighting methods to enhance this vital stage for emotional regulation and creativity. Detailing pharmacological approaches, he focuses on the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and how medications like donepezil and modern DORAs can boost REM sleep, while also identifying common suppressors like alcohol and THC. Throughout the episode, he also emphasizes that the goal is not to maximize one stage but to achieve a balanced sleep architecture. The discussion then covers behavioral and lifestyle strategies, explaining how simple changes like sleeping later into the morning, regular exercise, and stress management can remove natural roadblocks to REM. Matt also outlines how managing light exposure - by avoiding blue light at night and getting bright light in the morning - and consuming complex carbohydrates in the evening can further support this dream stage. Finally, the episode touches on emerging technologies like electrical brain stimulation that aim to amplify the brain's natural REM rhythms. Please note that Matt is not a medical doctor, and none of the content in this podcast should be considered medical advice in any way, shape, or form, nor prescriptive in any way.One of this week's sponsors, LMNT, offers a science-based electrolyte drink with no sugar or artificial ingredients. Deep sleep is where your body heals and your brain detoxifies. Missing it night after night could be why you're exhausted, foggy, or stuck in poor health. Healthy people sleep well, and better sleep creates a healthier you. But most people are doing it all wrong. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Peter Martone to reveal the overlooked fundamentals of sleep: the best body position, why safety and trauma affect your subconscious, how circadian rhythm and light dictate melatonin, why late-night eating destroys deep sleep, and how to rewire your nervous system to actually let go and fall asleep. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Kelly: What are your thoughts on HRT? Jacob: I recently watched your video ‘Is too much REM sleep an issue, in the last month I've been having a lot more REM sleep due to more stress, I just wanted to know if being on my phone before bed could be contributing to more REM Sleep, because my phone helps me take my mind off things but then maybe because it makes my brain active it causes me to have many dreams but that's why I am here asking for help. Tina: Hi Dr. Cabral. I'm hoping you can help me since nobody else has been able to. I have been low on vitamin D for years (steadily at 19), but have a strange reaction whenever I try to supplement with it. I'll immediately start my period, even if I had just finished my cycle a week or 2 prior, it will start again. I have done DNA testing and discovered that I am compromised in every pathway when it comes to vitamin D. I have tried various forms of vitamin D3 from gummies, capsules, and even patches, with always the same result of starting my cycle prematurely. Every doctor I've talked to has never heard of this reaction and can't figure it out. Please help. Erin: Middle of the night question HELP! So this has been going on awhile and it's so frustrating. I wake up during the night and have the sensation of a gnawing/gurgling sensation somewhere above the belly button. Sometimes if I don't eat something I start feeling awful.I can't figure out what is happening and what to do. I did the OAT test which came back for fungal/mold overgrowth. Is it related to this? Will i ever be able to sleep without having a snack during the night? So frustrated on this. Thank you so much E: Hello and thank you so much for your care and generosity. A couple questions, all related: 1)When I emailed support they emphasized NOT recommended to combine protocols. But on episode 837 (detox dos & don'ts), you said it was fine. I feel confused. When and which protocols is it ok to combine? I'm currently doing CBO and want to do mold and HMD, I'm wondering if any can be combined to speed up the process. 2)Relating to the CBO finisher: It sounds like it can be helpful to start sealing gut during CBO? Could you talk about this a bit? Would this be in addition to doing it afterwards or…? Also, I mistakenly bought clean gut probiotic for use during the finisher. Is it ok to use that for first 2 months of finisher and then transition to the daily probiotic? Don't fully understand difference Thank you for tuning into today's Cabral HouseCall and be sure to check back tomorrow where we answer more of our community's questions! - - - Show Notes and Resources: StephenCabral.com/3354 - - - Get a FREE Copy of Dr. Cabral's Book: The Rain Barrel Effect - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: CabralSupportGroup.com - - - Dr. Cabral's Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Complete Minerals & Metals Test (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Complete Candida, Metabolic & Vitamins Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Mood & Metabolism Test (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Complete Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Complete Omega-3 & Inflammation Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels) - - - Get Your Question Answered On An Upcoming HouseCall: StephenCabral.com/askcabral - - - Would You Take 30 Seconds To Rate & Review The Cabral Concept? In this Huberman Lab Essentials episode, I explain the important role that sleep and dreams have in learning, regulating emotions, and recovering from trauma. I discuss how dreams during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep contribute to emotional learning and the processing of traumatic experiences. I also discuss the similarities of REM dreams to clinical treatments like ketamine and EMDR therapy. I explain how non-REM dreams function differently to support other types of learning. Additionally, I describe science-backed strategies to optimize both types of sleep for improved learning, mood and emotional regulation. Huberman Lab Essentials are short episodes (approximately 30 minutes) focused on essential science and protocol takeaways from past Huberman Lab episodes.
