It's Die Hard in a police station!This week on DIE HARD ON A BLANK we're battening down the hatches with Ethan Hawke and Laurence Fishburne as we discuss the 2005 remake of ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13!After a botched undercover drug bust results in the deaths of two of his fellow team members, traumatized Detroit cop Jake Roenick (Ethan Hawke) now works an unambitious desk job, where he oversees a quiet, remote precinct that's about to be decommissioned. However, when a busload of prisoners – including notorious gangster Marion Bishop (Laurence Fishburne) - are forced to take refuge at said precinct because of a brutal New Year's Eve snowstorm, Jake suddenly finds himself called back into action when mysterious masked gunmen assault the police station… After comparing and contrasting this film with John Carpenter's original 1976 classic (itself a loose remake of RIO BRAVO), the guys discuss the myriad DIE HARD (and DIE HARD 2) DNA on display in this pressure-cooker siege scenario, while musing on the possibility that the echoes of previous wars (Vietnam, the Iraq invasion) may be reverberating inside both versions of the story. On the twenty-seventh night of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister joins me in reviewing GRETEL & HANSEL (2020), from director Osgood Perkins, the film has a screenplay by Rob Hayes based on the Grimm fairy tale.  Separated from their desperate mother, teenage Gretel (Sophia Lillis) leads her younger brother Hansel (Samuel Leakey) through a desolate, distant fairytale countryside in a desperate search for food and work.  After a long journey, the siblings are lured by the scent of a lavish feast to a strange, black-gabled house in the forest, home to the seemingly kind but unsettling woman (Alice Krige).  As Gretel's protective instincts clash with the woman's manipulative attempts to mentor her in burgeoning dark powers, the siblings begin to uncover the chilling and sinister secrets of the seemingly bottomless pantry and their host's true nature.  The film clocks in at 1 h and 27 m, is rated PG-13 and we caught it on the Hoopla app but you can find it on Prime Video, Pluto TV, Roku Channel, Tubi and to buy/rent on Prime Video. On night 6 of our #31DaysToHalloween the Mister joins me in reviewing PHANTASM (1979), from writer/director Don Coscarelli. Following the death of his parents, friend and the fear of his older brother Jody leaving him, young Mike Pearson (A. Michael Baldwin) becomes suspicious of the town's sinister mortician, known as the Tall Man (Angus Scrimm). Mike sneaks into the eerie Morningside Mortuary and discovers the Tall Man is converting the dead into murderous, shrunken dwarf minions and using flying silver spheres to harvest their brains for an otherworldly dimension. Along with Jody (Bill Thornbury) and their friend Reggie (Reggie Bannister), Mike confronts the Tall Man to stop his macabre operation, leading to a confusing and terrifying battle where reality and nightmare dangerously blur.
