Six months ago, we took foster placement of a little boy named Cole. Yesterday we adopted him. We adopted Cady and Emma earlier this year. For the past four years, Ana and I have been foster parents. It's been life-changing. We have aged tremendously, and we have lived exceptionally. We have hurt like never before. And we have discovered a capability in ourselves and others of loving and being loved so completely and unconditionally that we never imagined possible. Most of all, we have served God faithfully, made countless mistakes, but each day we evaluated, forgave, and asked forgiveness, then got up the next day determined to do better. And today, we woke up, no longer raising someone else's children for them, but raising our own. It's a lot to take in. It's what we prayed for, and God answered those prayers. Ana and I sit down to talk about the experience, some of the highs and lows, and moving forward. I met Tanji Johnson in 2001 when she had just graduated from being an amateur athlete to the Professional Division of competitive fitness in the IFBB. She became an icon in the fitness industry, competing for 15 years as one of the very best, and at times, the very best in the world. As a photographer and journalist, I had the privilege of covering her career for fitness industry magazines and websites and witnessing some of the incredible highs and devastating lows she experienced along the way. Despite two typically career-ending injuries, she recovered and came back stronger and better than ever. The approach she takes with life is the same she took with her athletic career, and because of that, she is immensely successful at everything she chooses to do. I hope you find Tanji and her approach to facing difficulty inspiring. We all can most certainly use some inspiration right now. Aging looks very different in 2020 than it did when I was growing up. The average 60-year-old man or woman looks and acts very differently than they did even a generation ago. Fitness is the culprit. That and eating healthier and living healthier lifestyles. Until now, however, finding applicable information about aging and staying fit has been challenging. Most of the available fitness information created is for a younger audience, and the information available doesn't address some of the biological changes those over 50 experience like changing hormones, changing digestion, and reduced recovery, for instance. And the information available for those over 50 is not always applicable to non-sedentary types and indeed not committed athletes that function at a high level of fitness and capability. Kevin Myles, Author of The Diet That Works, is our guest today, and we talk about his new project that just launched, The Fifty Plus Fit Club. Kevin is a well known trainer and qualitifed expert on nutriton and training and a 61 year old male elite athlete. In other words, the perfect man for the job. We are foster parents and our little boy Kwamane has been with us since he was 4 months old. He is four now and has spend every day of his life since January 2017 with us. Six weeks ago he went to live with his biological mother. We knew it was coming and it's a day she has been dreaming about since they were separated and we are very happy and supportive of her. But that doesn't make it easy, it just makes it right. Ana and I finally break the silence and talk about Kwamane and the story behind him leaving in this episode. Ana has been my favorite model to work with for over a decade now. We have done hundreds of photoshoots together, but since we became foster parents four years ago, and adoptive parents this year, working together has been rare. Recently, Aunt Elaine Goodlad gave us a day off, so Ana traveled with me to LA to do a photoshoot. Ana and I talk about shooting together, modeling, and our shoot in LA. I hope you enjoy and if you want to see the video of the photoshoot, click the link here. And thank you for subscribing to my youtube channel. Alexi and Joli Irvine are sisters, professional dancers and models, and both are Vegas Showgirls. They have played many of the biggest shows on the strip, yet they remain grounded and are sweet and down to earth girls despite their ample time in the spotlight. When we visit, I often sit and marvel at their hyperspeed back-and-forth sibling banter, so I invited them to do a podcast with me to talk about dancing, performing, and being sisters. Our eighth wedding anniversary came and went with little fanfare on the 8th of this month. Ana and I had dated four years before we married, we wanted to be sure. So with a strong love and twelve years of wedded bliss under our belts, it should have been a day we even wanted to celebrate. But we didn't. Not in the traditional way, at least. This podcast is revealing. We talk about how our marriage was brought to the brink this year, and why. And we share the simple truth about how we turned things around. And with all the love that fills our home, we talk about the most painful reason why our anniversary was a quiet one this year. This has been a long time coming but we filed papers recently and today we got a court date for the adoption of Crystal, our former foster son's biological mother. When we told our family and friends they didn't understand why. We talk about why in this episode and it's for the most simple of reasons. We also talk about our business, how quarantine and Covid have impacted it, and what we are doing about it. Doing the right thing because it is the right thing to do is important and we do our best to live our life in a way that reflects those values. We aren't perfect by a long shot, but we have a perfect record of doing our best, learning from our mistakes, and making something good from what we have left to work with. As always, I hope this podcast helps someone, inspires someone, and shows someone what is possible. "Duty is ours. Results are Gods." -John Quincy Adams That quote also happens to be the mantra for Jim Van Eerden, co-founder of Sevenly. Jim has been a serial entrepreneur for most of his life... he's worked in the entertainment industry as an executive producer on major films, he's worked in brand management working for major organizations like the Olympic national committee, the World Cup, and Pepsi. He has worked alongside media powerhouses like Mia Hamm and Serena Williams. And he co-founded Sevenly in 2011 with a desire to change the way consumers felt connected to the causes they cared about. We also had an important conversation surrounding the controversy that Sevenly experienced a couple of years ago. They have since recovered and have done a great job of rebuilding the brand, but Jim very candidly discusses what happened and how they took an unconventional approach to repairing the damage. Jim is also a strong man of faith and a believer in family. He and his wife Rachel have 11 children, including a son they adopted from Ecuador who was, quite literally, found naked in a trash bag as an infant. Jim's business savvy is strong, his faith runs deep, and he has a passion for business unlike any other person I have had the pleasure of meeting in my life. Jim's belief is that people are looking for an opportunity to standup and fight for the beautiful, the good, and the true. People are passionate about being, not barking. People want to do, not yell and fight. This conversation is one that is going to inspire so many to take action. ABOUT JIM: Jim Van Eerden is a serial entrepreneur with a heart for serving others. He co-founded Sevenly in 2011, outfitting world changers in new “cause art” every week, benefitting multiple causes, all under the same mission, “because people matter.” Besides being an intelligent businessman, he is also the loving father of eleven children, and on the foundational teams of many other businesses, non-profits, and charities.
