I've been studying and practicing Buddhist meditation for about 10 years. When I found Buddhism I was completely burnt out after a serious corporate burnout lasting about a decade. When I found meditation, I instantly noticed an immediate and tangible reduction in my anxiety and stress levels. I felt like meditation was a wonder drug. This meditation mainly focuses on calming and relaxation, and there are som very practical tips I wish someone would have told me in the beginning. HINT- I learned a lot of this the hard way

This is a deeply soothing 15 min practice designed to settle your nervous system and nourish you from the inside out.  We will explore:  What arises when you are fully relaxed and present in your body?  How can you tend to yourself and practice self-care?  Do you receive inner guidance when you take time to relax and connect within?  Write down any insights that arise. When I did this practice recently, I realized what I have been craving in my life is support. Not support from other people, but from myself. I have to give to myself the things that I've always longed to hear from others: "I am proud of you. You are more than enough. I love you so much. You have so much value to offer this world. You don't have to try so hard. You are so good at what you do. You are incredibly intelligent. You offer unique gifts that are needed in this world." I hadn't realized how much I was still seeking approval from others, and how self-critical I can be.  Now that I'm aware of what I need right now, I am speaking kind words to myself and supporting myself like crazy! I even treated myself to a pair of earrings I love and took myself on a dinner date (I usually only eat at restaurants when I'm with other people). It felt really nice and I ended up having an unexpectedly fun evening that included meeting new friends and singing karaoke :P It's funny the experiences we attract when we are kind and loving to ourselves. I invite you to use this practice whenever you feel called. Notice how you feel afterwards and write down anything interesting that arises.

Four years ago, I suffered a tennis injury that led to two years of chronic leg and lower back pain. After seeing almost a dozen medical professionals including PTs, doctors, and chiropractors, I finally met Elaine Oyang. She is a certified yoga therapist, and after just four sessions with her, she gave me a simple sequence of yoga poses that helped me finally become pain-free. Her philosophy is that she can give her students the tools and framework to succeed, so that they are not ultimately dependent on her for their health. She specializes in chronic pain, but also is trained in Meditation, Guided Relaxation, Ayurveda, and Holistic Nutrition. I talk to Elaine about how she pivoted from Biology to Yoga Therapy, and the differences between standard group yoga classes and Yoga Therapy. We also talk about Eastern vs. Western philosophy of health and the power of lifestyle change. Enjoy! In these uncertain times that we are facing in this pandemic of the COVID-19, it is even more valuable to elicit the relaxation response and deepen the bonds of connection with our children and those we love. This episode includes an adapted version of Michelle's foundational Birth Ease relaxation session which assists parents in creating an Inner Sanctuary for themselves and their baby. If parents counteract the effects of stress by utilizing the relaxation response daily, their babies receive the benefit as well; especially babies in the womb.  Pre & perinatal psychologists recommend connecting and bonding with your baby while in the womb as a vital way to help protect babies from stress and the rigors of birth. The relaxation response is essentially the opposite reaction to the “fight or flight” response. It is a physical state of deep relaxation which engages the other part of your nervous system—the parasympathetic nervous system. Once engaged, it turns off the fight or flight response and brings the body back to pre-stress levels counteracting the physiological effects of stress and the fight or flight response. Episode 03 of this podcast lists ways to help reduce the impacts of stress and also contains a guided relaxation session for parents of all ages to help elicit the relaxation response and strengthen the parent-child bond.
