The Metaverse is coming! It may be a virtual universe, but it has to run on real, physical, high-performance hardware. Tech mega-giant Qualcomm, led by Hugo Swart, is developing the chips behind new XR technology that has “the opportunity to change the world”, similar to the smartphone era. XR, for those still trying to catch up with the terminology, stands for “extended reality,” a concept that encompasses VR (virtual reality), AR (augmented reality), and sometimes MR (mixed reality). In this episode of Moore's Lobby, Daniel talks with Hugo about his background and the steps that led up to heading one of Qualcomm's most forward-facing divisions—and when they realized they were “onto something” with this whole XR thing. Topics of discussion include cutting-edge IC design, the difference between designing for AR vs. smartphones, and the nitty-gritty of parameters like “common illumination.” In this Moore's Lobby Season 4 opener, there are numerous highlights that Daniel and Hugo cover that you won't want to miss: -Get that definition of the Metaverse you crave. (Spoilers: You'll need to make room in your brain for more buzzwords, like “spatial internet.”) -Hear Hugo explain Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2 platform's impact on XR, the first mobile AR/VR chip uniting AI and 5G broadband connectivity with twice the CPU and GPU performance, and why TIME named it one of the “Best Inventions of 2021”. -Discover how Magellan inspires engineers to sail for the “New New World” and why Hugo looks into the future and believes “your audience of engineers…they're going to have a lot of fun.” -Learn what it takes to build a chip suitable for multiple XR use cases, protect IP, and Hugo's take on why ”power is king”. -Gain more knowledge on why Qualcomm's key partnerships with Microsoft, Meta, and other Silicon Valley partners are significant—years before they hit the mainstream.
Have news about the Metaverse reached your saturation point? Well it seems that we've only just started to hear the beginning of it. Technology companies have been working on this for years, and spatial web access technologies like VR headsets a augmented reality sensors as well as underlying infrastructures enabled by blockchain have finally reached the spillover point where mass consumers are not only ready, but keen to adopt them. In this visionary interview with Jonathan Komang-Sønderbek, Senior Business Developer at Khora, we take a look at use cases of spatial technologies in industries like education, healthcare, finance and insurance, as he vividly paints a picture of a future where we ditch our phones in favour of glasses that will open doors to alternative realities where we will socialize, learn, relax, do business and perhaps other things that we cannot yet conceptualize.

Cathy Hackl is a leading tech futurist and globally recognized business leader specializing in AR, VR, and spatial computing. Ms. Hackl hosts the Future Insiders podcast and has been designated as one of LinkedIn’s Top Tech Voices. She founded and leads the Futures Intelligence Group, a futures research and consulting firm that works with clients in tech, fashion, media, government, and defense implementing innovation strategies, strategic foresight, and emerging technologies. BigThink named Cathy “one of the top 10 most influential women in tech in 2020” and she has been called the CEO’s business guide to the metaverse. She was included in the 2021 prestigious Thinkers50 Radar list of the 30 management thinkers most likely to shape the future of how organizations are managed and led. In today’s podcast, Ms. Hackl discusses forecasting, the metaverse, and women in tech. The following bullet points highlight key insights from our interview with her: The world is approaching a pivotal moment for VR/AR/MR. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated adoption of these technologies, as they allow for an elevated sense of presence in a distanced physical world. AR/VR technologies have extremely diverse applications, from filters on social media to the treatment of PTSD and Alzheimer’s disease. Novel applications for these technologies are in constant development, particularly as wearables like “smart glasses” proliferate in the commercial sphere. Although AR/VR are frequently associated with altered visuals, other senses are increasingly incorporated into these platforms. Currently in development is AR that would allow users to focus on a single conversation amidst significant background noise. As the metaverse, a digital copy of the world available in real time, is developed, the way we engage with the physical world will change. Information available to VR/AR users in various “layers” could be manipulated or controlled by actors capable of altering the available data. In order to recruit future generations to technology development, it will be essential to “meet them where they are.” By identifying online platforms, interests, and values of youth, recruiters will be able to present opportunities to create meaningful change in an attractive manner. The federal government’s focus on artificial intelligence has de-prioritized AR/VR. However, AR/VR are innately American technologies, and increased focus on their development could allow the United States to maintain its current advantage in the field. Stay tuned to the Mad Scientist Laboratory for our next episode of “The Convergence,” featuring an interview with COL John Antal (USA-Ret.) discussing the implications for future conflict from the Second Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict, the psychological effects of drone warfare, and the future of maneuver, on 1 April 2021.
This week, we focus on the ever-changing VR/AR/MR industries and discuss how they differ between consumer and business solutions. We are joined by Danny Saetern, an entrepreneur and software engineer who brings his unique perspective as someone who has worked on both sides of these emerging technologies.
We live in an age where tomorrow's waves are undeniably crashing today.Innovation is happening every second and emerging technology is evolving with higher speed, capacity and processing power than what's possible for any human being. And while technology is driving the change, counter-intuitively it is not where our focus should be. The organisations who will succeed in the digital age will do so by decoding what is innately human; curious intelligence. Dr. Kate Raynes-Goldie is a master of curiosity. After all, curiosity is a superpower in a world where disruption is the new normal. Those who are curious will adapt and thrive — lean into new possibilities, new pathways and new paradigms of thinking. Curious minds are primed to navigate change and to ignite new perspectives. Today, Kate is a speaker, designer, innovation columnist, researcher, podcast host and a passionate creator of curious environments. She is a Producer of XR:WA, Australia's largest immersive reality (VR/AR/MR) conference series which ran for the first time in 2019. She's a Certified Facilitator of LEGO® Serious Play®, a methodology that boosts innovation, creativity and curiosity used by global brands such as IKEA, Virgin and Samsung. As a speaker, Kate's energy is playful and infectious and her content is in-depth and grounded in research. She ignites a curious journey for the audience acting as a virtual shaman who translates the mysterious world of VR, artificial intelligence, and big data to empower people with the insight to balance these technologies with a deeper self awareness of what it means to be human in the new age of innovation.
Had an interesting conversation with Thomas Lewis on the pandemic stress in United states as well as an introduction to VR/AR & mixed reality. With this year's VR/AR Global Summit Online Conference and Expo, the VR/AR Association ventures into new territory. For the first time, their popular conference will be entirely virtual. And the contest focuses on a new audience: everyone who may need to use immersive technology in the future. In other words, everyone. Another first? Access to the three-day conference is free. And it's going to be unlike any other conference. As of today, more than 200 speakers and exhibitors are confirmed. More than 50,000 attendees have received invitations. The virtual format will allow for networking, and collaboration, with attendees all over the world. Spanning three time zones, the conference will offer blocks of content in areas including fashion, art, education, aerospace and agriculture. Welcome to another episode of the Decoding Purpose Podcast. We are standing on the precipice of change. We all know that, but knowing what that change will look like tomorrow, next week, next month or next year is completely unknown. None of us really know what to expect. The thing is, in accepting that we don't know we somehow counter intuitively put ourselves in a purposeful position where we are empowered - because we are able to make a choice about what it could look like. The resurgence of #animation can’t be ignored. As we enjoy the incredible work coming to our screens we stop, big pun, to share more about #Stopmotion with an incredible artist in the field - Carmen Bromfield Mason. She has an impressive catalogue of work that includes Shaun the Sheep and Early Man. As a Junior Director working at #AardmanAnimation she’s perfectly placed to give us advice. We caught up with her to chat and get lessons on her approach to getting her foot in the door, hear her views on the state of the stop-motion industry and future opportunities. She explained about the level of detail and dedication involved in bringing characters to life, the impact #VR could have on the entire #workflow and if she partly owns Aardman (as a large stake of it has been handed over to employees). She also reflected on the low numbers of #diverse candidates entering the space, provided us with words of wisdom and much more. Listen and learn. It’s another two-parter. Welcome to this week's A Question of Gamification. My name is An Coppens. I'm the chief Gamechanger at Gamification Nation, and this week's question is a good one. How will VR, AR, MR, and what on earth is the difference between all those, and Gamification play nice? It's a question that comes up from time to time. Because in learning, and in HR, we find that a lot of people have no idea what all the buzz words and all of the... they have an idea, but maybe not a full understanding of what the buzz words stands for and how they can all work together or where they're all separate beasts that you should be treating differently. So, the purpose of today's podcast is to answer the questions of what are these different reality things? Does that combine well with Gamification? Does it not? Should you just do one and not engage with the other? Or, how do you best integrate it into your suite of learning related solutions for your workers, or HR related solutions for your workers? Or whichever way you see fit on using a mix of these things in the workplace. First things first, let's start with the terminology. VR, or virtual reality, is where you typically today need a headset like an oculus rift or a google cardboard or any variety of quality devices in between or above. Basically, what that allows you do to is to escape into a virtual world. Now, in a virtual world, or in virtual reality today, most of the time we need to exclude what is going on around us and we step completely into that virtual space. Which is a great tool for, for example, when you need to simulate environments that people might not be use to. For example, flight simulators are an experience that we could call virtual reality today. Although, we could argue that you could actually play all of it as a mixed reality play because if the person is sitting in the middle of it and touching real equipment but the visuals are displayed on a screen, you're combining virtual reality with reality and giving a lifelike experience even though it's not for real. Simulations, for years have been, in a space in my view, where you find virtual and reality kind of blending together and giving feedback to each other. Virtual reality was designed, originally, with the idea of games. A lot of games, like escape rooms, can be played in virtual reality, but some of the cool games today are completely virtual reality based. If you are not sure what to test or what to try out there's two I would recommend trying. First of all any roller coaster experience, if you're not too afraid of roller coasters that is. And the other one is the play saber where you basically do a massive drum kind of set up and you're trying to keep up with the beat in virtual reality, which is pretty awesome. Or an escape room, of course, where you're in a virtual reality playroom and you need to unlock clues in order to get out. Virtual reality is typically, still today, with headsets which blank out reality. Augmented reality, most of us will have at some point heard of Pokemon Go or at least... you know, maybe not played but at least heard of Pokemon Go the game. Which, basically, brought augmented reality into our everyday, mass presence as such. It's where you combine the camera use of your smart phone with, lets say, fictional characters like Pokemon. And you combine real life and whatever is on your screen together to take some funny pictures, to catch them where they are, where you could be. Further than that, augmented reality is developing and some of the really cool type of material that's coming out is where it is much more seamless so that you don't even need a smart phone anymore. Which you might have holographic screens popping up. You may have heard of HoloLens, where actual human beings are holograms and you can pop up wherever your hologram needs to be for that time. It's basically combining reality with some form of digital augmentation.

We're back with the second part of the interview with Wesley Louis, Co-Founder of The Line studio and Animation Director. His recent animation short, The Mighty Grand Piton, took a familiar story (child meets robot) and remixed it sending shock waves through social media. We found out how he balances being a studio Co-Founder and creator for multiple big name brands like Viceland and LeSean Thomas, what unexpected motivators led him to making a career change, what advice he’d give to aspiring/emerging talent, why the story matters and what it means to him to do it #ForTheCulture. People who work in the spatial computing industry tend to forget about the fact that the general public doesn't understand the difference between Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality or Mixed Reality. In today's episode, our COO Alex and CTO Norbi discuss if these terms become a general expression anytime soon. Let's get started!
And the award goes to... In this episode we get into the shiny, sparkling, spectacles known as "award ceremonies". How do you get nominated for a coveted industry award? Find out from our co-host and expert VFX artist, Laraib. She shares the story of her #Netflix supported trip to Los Angeles. Stephanie Llamas is the VP of Research & Strategy, and the Head of XR at SuperData Research.Stephanie’s background is in market research as well as product and brand strategy. She’s spent more than 10 years in the digital media, gaming and VR/AR/MR industries, and earned an M.A. in Media, Culture and Communication from NYU.You may have seen Stephanie presenting her team’s findings on stage at CES, AWE, SXSW, VRX, or another industry conference.Timing is everything. In this conversation, Stephanie reviews the data and assesses whether now is the right time to jump into VR, mobile AR, or smartglasses. We tackle that question by discussing the progress and monetization strategies for each. Stephanie also draws lessons from previous cycles to better appreciate where we are today.Although those lines, Stephanie argues that VR is not dead. In fact, compared to earlier cycles, VR is really strong. While earlier in the cycle, smartglasses hold a ton of potential as well. You can find all of the show notes at thearshow.com.
You've, probably, seen the film and heard the reviews about Marvel's Spider-Man | Into The Spider-Verse. Well, we take the conversation in a new direction. We ask (and try to answer) the big questions that got creatives and "the culture" hyped about this modern day masterpiece. Will the future of #animation and storytelling forever be changed? How to tell if representation is actually tokenism? Is this a tribute or a love letter? When you know you've seen this film too many times [hint: you can never see this film too many times]. Plus all the hot takes from our round table of creative professionals. We also share how YOU can suggest what we talk about on the show! Enjoy your show. - Culture in the Craft We’re a #poc #podcast by a collective of creative experts talking about animation, games, VR/AR/MR +, digital design (motion graphics etc), VFX, Prod Mgmt (aka the business end) and more as people of colour. Kalin Stoyanchev, the Project Lead at RNDR and VP of Distributed Systems and Blockchain at OTOY, is our guest this episode. Kalin does an excellent job of explaining how blockchain in general is impacting VR/AR/MR, & where RNDR fits within the ecosystem. RNDR is a decentralized rendering software. Built on a blockchain-based system, RNDR is a decentralized and open global rendering system that makes high-powered rendering tools readily available to Hollywood studios and everyday content creators alike. With a future of AR and VR becoming an increasing reality, somebody is going to need to render all those virtual worlds. RNDR’s parent company, OTOY, is the company who built Octane Render - which is the rendering software used in WestWorld’s show opening. You can find out more about RNDR at www.rendertoken.com. Immersive technology can break down cultural barriers and bring countries closer together under the Belt and Road Initiative, said the Chief Creative Officer of Flight School Studio. Interviewed at the 2018 Hong Kong Film and Television Market (FILMART), Brandon Oldenburg told the HKTDC how virtual, augmented and mixed reality (VR, AR and MR) are redefining storytelling, with Asia becoming a global leader by embracing the technology.
Today's episode features Samuel Huber, Founder of Admix.in, the first adtech platform for mixed reality, giving VR/AR/MR developers the best tools to monetize their content. Sam is also a frequent speaker at VR/AR/adtech conferences. Human communication has evolved from text, to photos, to videos, so I believe that the transition to immersive media is inevitable. However, the current rules of advertising don't apply within immersive media, mainly because of the intrusiveness. Admix aims to solve this problem and maximize revenue for the content creators.Admix (previously Advir.co) enables non-intrusive, programmatic product placements within the content. Think, a can of coke on a table, or a video playing on a billboard. Admix's vision is to become the largest virtual estate company by giving VR and AR developers the best tools to monetize their immersive content, whether it is through advertising, e-commerce or transactions.Samuel is also the co-president of the VRAR pledge, a commitment against intrusive advertising signed by companies such as Yahoo or Orange.Sam's LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/samhuber/Sam's Website - http://www.samhuber.com/Admix - http://admix.in/Please contact us if you have comments, suggestions and guest inquiries - mark@vudream.comVU Dream - http://www.vudream.com/VU Dream's FB - https://www.facebook.com/VUDreamOfficial/VU Dream's Twitter - https://twitter.com/VUDreamOfficialVU Dream's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/vudreamofficial
