On this episode of Stay Ready: The Podcast, Matt and Scott sit down with critically acclaimed producer Rob Harvell. Rob a Laurinburg, N.C. native picked up his ABC's thanks to Sports Illustrated, The Sporting News and Stock Car Racing magazines. Rob begin his career producing Wendell Scott: A Race Story, and went on to produce other projects, including the entire first season of ESPN's “SEC Storied,” which included Herschel (Herschel Walker), 40 Minutes of Hell (Nolan Richardson), The Play That Changed College Football (1992 SEC Championship Football Game), and Lolo (Lolo Jones). Rob would add to his production portfolio with an array of other SEC Storied films. Among them were Miracle 3, The Book of Manning (Manning football family), Tigers United (Michael Sam), Dominique Belongs to Us (Dominique Wilkins), Thunder and Lightning (Will Clark, Rafael Palmeiro), Wuerffel's Way (Danny Wuerffel), Miracles on the Plains (2013 Auburn Football), The Bo You Don't Know (Bo Rein), Before They Were Cowboys (Jimmy Johnson, Jerry Jones, Barry Switzer), Stacy's Gift (Stacy Lewis), The Walkoff, and No Experience Required (Texas A&M 12th Man Kickoff Team).The guys open up the episode getting to know Rob's backstory, upbringing and what got him involved in producing and how he got his break into the business. Rob goes into detail about his all time love of sports that started when he was a small child and how one of his teachers told his parents he was watching too much television for his age. This leads the guys to talk about how that affected him and what happened because of that. After this discussion they transition to the topic of college and how he randomly chose his major (communications) while at Appalachian State because he felt it would be easy and would "get him on tv one day." Next, they get into the story about him getting his first Internship at Nascar after his guidance counselor told him he would not qualify due to his low GPA. He decided to reach out to the company himself and went in for an interview and crushed it resulting in him being hired. After interning there for a bit, he is given the opportunity to produce his first documentary. This documentary is really what gets everything going for Rob. He instantly falls in love with the idea of producing. From there, he leaves NASCAR and goes on to produce The Book of Manning about Peyton and his family, a Bigfoot documentary, several shows for Dana White and the UFC and much more.The guys continue the conversation learning more about all the documentaries Rob has produced/ been a part of, some of his other interests, what he's hoping to do in the future with producing and so much more. In our everyday conversations, many of us use words or phrases that have racist meanings or derivations, even if we don’t intend our speech to be racist. Many of these words or phrases have worked their way into our common vernacular in a covert way and by their use promote inequality. Just a few examples are “master bedroom or master bathroom,” “blacklisting” someone, “uppity,” “black mark,” “sold down the river,” or “black sheep of the family” all have their derivations during slavery or reconstruction. The list of these types of terms is voluminous. The use of phrases of this nature perpetuate the master/slave dynamic and covertly and subtlety advance systemic racism through our normal speech, says Dr. Kalvin Harvell, professor of sociology at Henry Ford College in Dearborn, Michigan. Dr. Harvell has been the president of the Michigan Sociological Society and his is the founder of Harvell and Associates, an educational consulting firm. While the bulk of our racist speech is directed toward African Americans, we do have other phrases that target other ethnicities. For example, the term “gypped” is a verbal slam towards gypsies (or Romani people). “Paddy wagon” is a reference to Irish immigrants being lawless and arrested. These racist terms also can be coded and merge into our lexicon. For example, often the media, uses the term “urban” to mean inner-city, poor, and black. If we want to refer to a gentrified part of a city, we refer to it as “metropolitan.” These types of terms not only appear in our daily lexicon, but they also are often used by journalists, thereby perpetuating racial stereotypes and tropes, says Dr. Harvell. To be anti-racist, he says, one must examine one’s own speech patterns and purge words and phrases that are hurtful and promote inequality.

Through an idea that spark further curiosity Aireka’s vision came to fruition. It was a long arduous road, but after 3 years Aireka startup Nodatplace.com is going strong. Aireka’s prayer was answered to leave her career to build a startup, but was apprehensive to leave her career. She knew that in order to succeed in her new role she would have to leave AT&T and focus all of her energy into Nodatplace.com. An investor backed out of their initially $40,000, but it did not slow Aireka down and she keep forging on build her startup.Success is pushing through during the most challenging of times, keeping your head game tight, and keep the negative thoughts out. Leaving a well paying job and starting a business is an incredible accomplishment. But doing so as a single mother of four children is especially noteworthy. And that’s exactly what today’s guest did. Aireka Harvell launched a successful app called Nodat and left her job to pursue it full time. She’s also launched Twende, a summit and accelerator program for founders of color. Aireka is an extraordinary woman who has overcome a lot of obstacles to get to where she is today. She’s overcome drug addiction, she left an abusive marriage and she’s even a cancer survivor. Aireka is a shining example of someone who hasn’t let challenges get in her way. Rates of infectious disease outbreaks are on the rise in our oceans. Fueled by sewage dumping, unregulated aquaculture, and drifting plastic in warming seas, ocean outbreaks are heralds of impending global environmental disaster. Renowned scientist Drew Harvell took the stage with a daunting and urgent report of the rising risks of marine epidemics in Ocean Outbreak: Confronting the Rising Tide of Marine Disease. She underscored these diseases’ destructive potential to cause a mass die-off of wildlife from the bottom to the top of the food chain, impacting the health of ocean ecosystems as well as lives on land. Harvell shared twenty years of research and investigation of four iconic marine animals—corals, abalone, salmon, and starfish—demonstrating how these animals have been devastated by disease—and how they still have the potential to be saved. Join Harvell to learn how, through policy changes and the implementation of innovative solutions from nature, we can reduce major outbreaks, save some ocean ecosystems, and protect our fragile environment. Drew Harvell is Professor of Marine Ecology at Cornell University. She has published over 170 scientific articles in leading journals and is a fellow of the Ecological Society of America and the Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future. Her book A Sea of Glass received a National Outdoor Book Award and was recognized as one of the Smithsonian’s Best “Art Meets Science” Books of 2016. First up, Kevin Harvell of STL Tech Talk and Tech Informist joins the show to discuss tech and phones and Producer Bobby's love of hating the iPhone (errr wait....yep thats sort of correct). Georgia takes a massive hit and keeps on trucking. We talk with her about the sport of womens rugby and Vegemite.Finally Mark goes all in discussing soccer in the midwest and specifically the attitude of fans in 2015 with regard to soccer in the US.
