In this episode, we share the last track from our Shalom Power Clip album. Shirley is reading scriptures that assure us of our Heavenly Father's healing touch in our lives. The music of the Psalms is closely associated with the healing because the music has healing qualities as well. Since David and the psalm authors have brought us this healing music included in the words of the Psalms, we can see that part of the inspiration from Abba is that He uses the music as one of the ways that bring us His healing in our lives. We pray that as you listen to this music and scripture, you will be encouraged and made whole. — There are many definitive truths involved in cancer research, care, and treatment. After testing, we might know that specific drugs work or don't work in certain instances. We may even know what the predicted outcome might be when comparing one surgical approach to another, but doctors do not have the luxury of working in absolutes. Absolutes may offer more peace than unknowns, but there are not many absolutes in cancer. Instead, there is a stream of endless unknowns, creating a chaotic and unpredictable environment for the feelings of anyone faced with a challenge like cancer. David Richman experience has shown that cancer usually crashes into one's life with a sort of primitive, metal-to-flesh force, and people don't often jump right into unpacking the vast array of emotion the experience evokes for them— sometimes they never do. Since David first recognized the common thread binding people touched by cancer—the tendency not to examine, discuss, or even acknowledge the emotional side of their experience—his goal has been to shine a light on the things we've all kept buried, in the hopes that people might better understand what they and their loved ones went through. Valeria Teles interviews David Richman — the author of “Cycle of Lives: 15 People's Stories, 5,000 Miles, and a Journey Through the Emotional Chaos of Cancer.” David is an author, public speaker, philanthropist, and endurance athlete whose mission is to form more meaningful human connections through storytelling. In his first book, Winning in the Middle of the Pack, he discussed how to get more out of ourselves than ever imagined. With Cycle of Lives, David shares the interconnected stories of people overcoming trauma and delves deeply into their emotional journeys with cancer. He continues to do Ironman triathlons and a wide range of endurance athletic events, having recently completed a solo 4,700-mile bike ride. He is married, lives in Southern Nevada, and has twins who are in college. The inspiration is Love. The aspiration is to awaken new ways of thinking that can lead us to a new way of being, being well.

For decades, Sub-Saharan Africa has been a hotspot for foreign investment and international aid. It has also been subject to the kind of philanthropy that is often more destructive than helpful. As an impact investor, it's imperative to understand what that type of philanthropy looks like and how to avoid it. Africa has also been facing funding challenges in recent years. Even before the pandemic, the continent was seeing a decline in FDI. In fact, investment flows were expected to drop 25% by the end of 2020. Today, the majority of the available funding is streamlined to large corporations or small microenterprises, leaving a major gap for the companies in between. So what does it mean to start an impact fund that makes a real impact for African communities? To find out, we sat down with David Harlley, Jonathan Wilson, and Kwabena Owusu-Adjei - the minds behind Third Way Capital. Launched in 2020, Third Way Capital is an early-stage impact fund investing in African small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Their strategy is to invest in financial structures that make lasting change, alleviating some of the funding challenges that African SMEs and entrepreneurs face. During this episode, we discuss what goes into starting an impact fund. Since David, Jonathan, and Kwabena have all lived or grown up in Africa, we talk about the importance of truly knowing the environment you're investing in. Plus, how impact investors can identify opportunities and gaps, validate their impact with outcome-oriented measurements, and break the mould of traditional fund structures. And be sure to stay tuned to the very end where we discuss the specific kinds of companies Third Way Capital is looking to invest in. GOSPEL POWER - DECEMBER 25, 2020 - FRIDAY Solemnity of Our Lord's Birth Midnight Mass Gospel: Lk 2:1-14 In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see— I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!” REFLECTION Divine power works in weakness. While the mighty ones of the world make their importance felt by causing a mass movement of people, the Almighty One quietly enters world history through the obedience of the couple to whom the mystery has been entrusted. While Augustus Caesar thinks he is organizing his subjects by decreeing a census, God makes use of his pride and willto-power to bring prophecies to fulfillment. Mary and Joseph humbly submit to the imperial decree to enroll in thier native city Bethlehem. And thus the Davidic Messiah is born in the city of David. Since David himself was a shepherd, the birth of the Davidic Messiah is proclaimed first to shepherds. Thus, the first recipients of the Good News are the poor and the humble, whose hearts are open to being surprised by God. PRAYER Lord Jesus, you did not shun weakness, but embraced it and turned it into the place of operation of divine power. Amen.
A NEW WAY HAS COME Today’s readings are Job 23-24 and Mark 11-12. We are reading from the New Living Translation. A fig tree is cursed, a temple is overturned, tenant farmers are killed, and a vineyard is reclaimed and given away to others. What’s happening? Judgement is happening. Judgement is coming to God’s people. Jesus is pointing to judgement. The passage reads almost like the Old Testament and prophets like Jeremiah and Isaiah. The impending judgement of the old system of the temple and this religious kingdom is about to come to an end. He curses the tree and he overturns the temple. A new way of approaching God is coming. A new priest and a new king are being revealed. There is a new temple and a new way of living in God. Jesus points to this when he quotes from Psalm 110. After Jesus is questioned he gathers a crowd together and he asks them why the teachers of religious law claim that the Messiah is the Son of David. David himself, speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit said: “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord, Sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies beneath your feet.’ Since David himself called the Messiah ‘my lord,’ how can the messiah be his son?” The large crowd listened to him with great delight. I encourage you to read Psalm 110. It’s a short seven-verse chapter. It’s about Melchizedek. He’s a somewhat mysterious person that shows up in Genesis 14. Abraham, the Father of Faith, acknowledges that Melchizedek is an eternal Priest and King. Abraham demonstrates his allegiance to this King and Priest by offering him a tithe of all that he has. Abraham himself, is a subject of this Priest and King, in the order of Melchizedek. Jesus is teaching us, in this passage, that He is a priest in the order of Melchizedek. He is the fulfillment of this new way, this new system that God is bringing to pass in the person of Christ. The fig tree is cursed and the temple has been turned over. God is making all things new, with a new king and new priest in the order of Melchizedek . He is the King Eternal, God Most High. People of faith, like Abraham, are going to come and serve him and be his subjects. There will be people great and small who serve Him. In fact, this chapter ends with Jesus watching in the temple as a woman many thought was very ‘small’, a widow who had nothing but two pennies, enters. She comes because she is faithful. She believes. She comes and offers all that she has, her two pennies. They are an offering of faith because she is a person of faith. She worships God in faith as a subject of this new King and His Kingdom, in His new temple. Jesus tells us to look closely at her. He also tells us, in Psalm 110, to look closely at Abraham. These are people of faith. They live and worship in a new kingdom, under a new King, in a new Temple and in a new way, – in Spirit and in truth. Look closely at Abraham, the Widow, and Melchizedek. And let your eye be drawn even closer to Jesus. May you see Him most of all.
Saul’s defeat and death paved the way for David’s reign—which also eventually crumbled. So why should we spend time considering Israel’s Old Testament kings in the first place? Alistair Begg pauses to answer this question at the outset of a new study in 2 Samuel. Since David’s story points forward to Christ, it’s an essential part of the whole Bible, which in turn contains the great story at the very center of world history: that of Christ and His eternal kingship. Bible passages: 2 Samuel 1:1-16

Pre-Loved Podcast: David, Sammy, Yayra and Kwamena Hey, vintage lovers, I’m Emily Stochl and this is Pre-Loved Podcast -- the show about rad vintage style and guests you’ll want to go thrifting with. Thanks for joining us! Last week, we heard from Liz Rickett, co-founder of the OR Foundation, and we had a conversation that I hope brought some nuance to your understanding of the global second-hand industry, including the industry in Accra, Ghana. Today we’re joined by four Ghanians: David, Sammy, Yayra and Kwamena. All have different stories to tell in the second-hand sphere. First up, you’ll hear from David Adams. David’s family has run a second-hand clothing business in Kantamanto Market in Ghana for over thirty years. After finishing his degree, David took the helm of the business in 2014. He told us a bit about his business at Kantamanto, and what his day-to-day as a reseller looks like. Since David’s family has been in this industry for so long, I also wanted to get his perspective on how things have changed in the last 30 years. You’ll hear all this and more coming up on the show. Then, we have Sammy. Sammy is graduate of Radford University of Fashion, and today he’s a fashion designer and member of the Board of Fashion Ghana. His sustainable streetwear brand utilizes upcycled clothing from Kantamanto Market. Finally, we have Yayra and Kwamena of The Revival and Afro District. These two are vintage wizards. They have spent years sourcing gems from Kantamanto for resale, repair, upcycling and styling. Over the last year they have focused their efforts on promoting a culture of upcycling using clothing that cannot be sold in Kantamanto. Let’s hear from them now Let’s dive right in! Some of those changes have suddenly been thrust upon us due to Covid-19. Others have been gradually changing right under our noses and have maybe been highlighted by the situation the world is currently in. One of those areas that are changing is the hair colour business. 1) How many dispensations are there, and can you put them in chronological order? 2) Can you explain Matthew 6:34 "take no thought of tomorrow"? 3) Why do you say that Matthew 10:14 is not for us today? 4) Why do Matthew, Mark, and Luke say Simon carried Jesus cross, but John says that Jesus carried His own cross? 5) Do you believe in demon possession, and how do you pray for someone you think is possessed? 6) Since David was punished and not Bathsheba, does that mean adultery is the mans sin and not the womans? 7) What is your view on the Rapture?

NUMBERS 8-9:In Numbers 7, we heard about the gifts given by the leaders of Israel following the dedication of the sacred tent. PSALM 31:Psalm 31 is a desperate, yet confident, prayer for protection. This prayer models the secret of effective prayer— praying with full belief in the Lord. LUKE 20b:Yesterday’s reading in first part of Luke 20 showed how the Jewish leaders tried to confront and discredit Jesus. I remember reading these passages in the summer after 6th grade and being so impressed with Jesus' wisdom. GNT Translation notes:[Who it is who does the ‘waving’ in this ‘wave offering’ is variously interpreted in 8:13. And it could be taken simply as a presentation, because it would be rather hard to ‘wave’ this object.]Num. 8:13 [NLT Then have the Levites stand in front of Aaron and his sons, and raise your hands and present them as a special offering to the LORD.//HCSB: … and you are to present them before the Lord as a presentation offering.//CEV: They will stand at my altar in front of Aaron and his sons, who will dedicate the Levites to me.//GNT: “Dedicate the Levites as a special gift to me, and put Aaron and his sons in charge of them.]====Ps. 31:21 [Let everyone] Praise the Lord! How wonderfully he showed his love for mewhen I was surrounded and attacked!23 [Listen, all his faithful people: Love the Lord!//Love the Lord, all his faithful people.]The Lord protects the faithful, but punishes the proud as they deserve.24 Be strong, be courageous, all you [who//that] hope in the Lord.====Luk. 20:27 Then some Sadducees, [the religious party] who say that people will not rise from death, came to Jesus and said, NLT Translation notes:Num. 8:13 [NLT Then have the Levites stand in front of Aaron and his sons, and raise your hands and present them as a special offering to the LORD.//HCSB: … and you are to present them before the Lord as a presentation offering.]]CEV: They will stand at my altar in front of Aaron and his sons, who will dedicate the Levites to me.] [Who it is who does the ‘waving’ in this ‘wave offering’ is variously interpreted.]====Ps. 31:21 Praise [you/the] LORD, for [you have//he has] shown me the wonders of [your/his] unfailing love.[You have//He] kept me safe when my city was under attack.====Luk. 20:8 And Jesus responded, “Then I won’t tell you [either/0] by what authority I do these things.”16 “I’ll tell you—he will come and kill those farmers and lease the vineyard to others.”[His listeners protested, “Oh, may such a thing never happen!”//“How terrible that such a thing should ever happen.”]19 The teachers of religious law and the leading priests wanted to arrest Jesus immediately because they realized he was telling the story against them—they were the wicked farmers. But they [did nothing because//0] they were afraid of the people’s reaction.23 He saw through their [duplicity/trickery] and said, 24 “Show me a Roman coin. Whose picture and title are stamped [here/0] on it?”37 “But now, as to whether the dead will be raised—even Moses proved this when he wrote about the burning bush. Long after Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had died, he referred to the Lord d as ‘[the God Abraham worships//the God of Abraham], [the God Isaac worships//the God of Isaac], and [the God Jacob worships//the God of Jacob].’41 Then Jesus presented them with a [problem/question]. [“Note that there is a problem with the teaching that the Messiah will come as a descendant of David.”//”Why is it,” he asked, “that the Messiah is said to be the son of David?”]44 Since David called the Messiah ‘Lord,’ [it is clear that the Messiah cannot just be his descendant!//how can the Messiah be his son?]”
NUMBERS 7:Yesterday we heard how people had to follow through with God’s commands, and those with defiling diseases were expelled from their camp until such time as they could be declared ritually clean again. And we heard about cleansing for issues involving the conscience, and what a man might do if he suspected his wife of unfaithfulness. (A man would have to be a terrible jerk to do this to his wife if he didn't have good reasons for his suspicions!) The 6th chapter dealt with the Nazarite vow, and the ended with the famous Aaronic blessing. In today’s chapter 7 of Numbers, the GNT has done a beautiful job of giving the complete information in a way that is clear, precise, and that reduces repetition. PSALM 30:This is a wonderful song of thanks to God. LUKE 20b:Yesterday in the second half of chapter 19, Jesus triumphantly entered Jerusalem. While on the road he wept over Jerusalem because of the spiritual blindness of the leaders, and he cleansed the temple of commerce. GNT Translation notes:Ps. 30:4 [Hey, listen up, all God’s faithful people, sing praise to theLord!//Sing praise to the Lord, all his faithful people!]Remember what the Holy One has done, and give him thanks!7 You were good to me, Lord;you protected me like a mountain fortress. But then[, when] you hid yourself from me,and I was afraid.====7 So they answered, “We don't know where [his right to baptize//it] came from.”13 Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? [I know.] I will send my own dear son; surely they will respect him!’ NLT Translation notes:8 I cried out to you, O LORD.I begged [You, Lord,//the Lord] for mercy, saying,====8 And Jesus responded, “Then I won’t tell you [either/0] by what authority I do these things.”16 “I’ll tell you—he will come and kill those farmers and lease the vineyard to others.”[His listeners protested, “Oh, may such a thing never happen!”//“How terrible that such a thing should ever happen.”]19 The teachers of religious law and the leading priests wanted to arrest Jesus immediately because they realized he was telling the story against them—they were the wicked farmers. But they [did nothing because//0] they were afraid of the people’s reaction.23 He saw through their [duplicity/trickery] and said, 24 “Show me a Roman coin. Whose picture and title are stamped [here/0] on it?”41 Then Jesus presented them with a question.
GENESIS 34-35: Yesterday we heard about Jacob wrestling all night with a mysterious heavenly figure, and about Jacob's reunion with Esau. JOB 20: This chapter is Zophar’s second response to Job. In chapter 19, Job responded to Bildad's second speech. Job expressed amazing belief that he would see his defender (often translated ‘redeemer’). He says, 25 But I know there is someone in heaven who will come at last to my defense. 26 Even after my skin is eaten by disease, while still in this body I will see God. 27 I will see him with my own eyes, and he will not be a stranger. MARK 12b: Yesterday in the first half of Mark 12, Jesus told a pointed parable against the Jewish religious leaders, then he went on to refute the Sadducees. We re-read several verses today. NLT Translation notes: Gen. 34:17 But if you don’t agree to be circumcised, we will take [Dinah/her] and be on our way.” 30 Afterward Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have ruined me! You’ve made me stink among all the people of this land—among all the Canaanites and Perizzites. We are so few [, and now//that] they will join forces and crush us. I will be ruined, and my entire household will be wiped out!” 15 And Jacob named the place Bethel (which means “house of God”), because God had spoken to him [again/0] there. ==== Mrk. 12:26 “But now, as to whether the dead will be raised— haven’t you ever read about this in the writings of Moses, in the story of the burning bush? Long after Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had died, God said to Moses, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ 27 So he is the God of the living, not the dead. You have made a serious error.” [In my reading in the 019, I modified the translation like this, “I am the God Abraham worships… (present tense).” While this is justified in stating Jesus’ meaning at that point in the discourse, it is going too far in translating the Hebrew and Greek of the Old Testament passage. Jesus’ point is that the continuing relationship of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is implicit in God’s statement. So, I admit my mistake, and say that to make that explicit in the translation is going a bit too far.] 37 Since David himself called the Messiah ‘my Lord,’ how can the Messiah [just/0] be his son?” The large crowd listened to him with great delight.
David kicks of the intro to the intro before the other intro with… a song. Do you remember that time when he suggested making a parody of the Beatles song Paperback Writer that would make fun of the Christian publishing industry? David did. Do you remember immediately thinking, “That sounds like a terrible idea.” David didn't. So he made it.Apple's Logic Pro lets talented people do some pretty amazing things. And it let David do this. Anyway, the lyrics will be below the mentioned links section, along with an apology from David. For our main topic, we discuss Jim's fiery passions regarding preaching. We set the context by discussing our views on it, then we try to talk about why Jim seems more fired up about it than David. Since David is usually more fired up about stuff like this than Jim, this episode should be at least mildly interesting if you're really bored.Mentioned LinksWin a copy of Kevin DeYoung's book: Just Do Something! To enter: Take a photo of yourself with a pained expression on your face and some indication that you're listening to our show (headphones, speakers, album art showing on a screen, however you want to do it). 2CHRONICLES 35:It is simply amazing that we have books like Deuteronomy, since we see that it (or perhaps Leviticus) was almost lost. And it shows how far Judah had slipped that they didn’t know of any copies. Josiah sincerely repented after hearing God’s Word. ECCLESIASTES 11:Yesterday’s chapter of Ecclesiastes was mainly separate proverbs. As an example I quote verse 3, which I like in the NLT: 3 You can identify fools just by the way t”hey walk down the street! MATTHEW 22b:Jesus told a pointed parable yesterday in the one about the King’s wedding feast for his son. And the people sent by the Pharisees with friends of King Herod failed miserably to trap Jesus. And why did the man at the wedding feast get thrown out for not wearing wedding clothes? If you don’t know the answer, there’s a golden treasure there waiting for you to find it. GNT Translation notes:2Chr. 35:15 [NET The musicians, the descendants of Asaph, manned their posts, as prescribed by [King] David, Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun the king’s prophet.// GNT The following musicians of the Levite clan of Asaph were in the places assigned to them by King David's instructions: Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun, the king's prophet.] The guards at the Temple gates did not need to leave their posts, because the other Levites prepared the Passover for them.====Ecc. 11:3 GNT Their stupidity will be evident even to strangers they meet along the way; they let everyone know that they are fools. [One can be sure that ESV is overly literal with the last phrase, “he says to everyone that he is a fool.” I’ve met plenty of fools, and such a person doesn’t actually “let everyone know” (GNT) that he/she is a fool. CEV is probably right that ‘walking’ also is to be taken in its other more general meaning of ‘live’.]3 CEV Fools show their stupidity by the way they live; it’s easy to see they have no sense.====Mat. 22:1 NLT That same day Jesus was approached by some Sadducees— [who are] religious leaders who say there is no resurrection from the dead. They posed this question:// GNT That same day some Sadducees came to Jesus and claimed that people will not rise from death.]45 If, then, David called him ‘[my] Lord,’ how can the Messiah [just] be David's descendant?” NLT Translation note:Mat. 22:45 Since David called the Messiah ‘my Lord,’ how can the Messiah [just] be his son?”

How do you create a business that scales massively but also showcases your purpose and values? How do you build a company you can truly be proud of — a business that can make a huge difference in the world? This week’s guest shares his insightful business expertise and his company’s mission! David Katz is an inspirational speaker and the Founder and CEO of The Plastic Bank, an internationally recognized solution to stop ocean plastic. The Plastic Bank is a global network of micro recycling markets that empower the poor to transcend poverty by cleaning the environment. David has been an entrepreneur his entire life and was in charge of executing projects since he was eight years old. He came from a family of immigrants who had to be creative and entrepreneurial to make their mark in Canada. The Plastic Bank was inspired by David’s life experiences as a youth sailing with his father. David’s father was an early adopter of GPS in the 1980s, which wasn’t readily available at that time or up to the standards of today’s GPS technology. It helped David learn how to map out where he was in the ocean at all times. Since David grew up on the ocean and had learned about the immense and beautiful power of the sea, he was saddened when he kept seeing waves upon waves of trash float up to the shore. David has started companies before but he was purposeless. When he came upon this cause, he knew he could create a company that was far bigger than himself. If he could only just showcase how much value each plastic item floating in the water was worth ($20-50), then there would be no more plastic left. The Plastic Bank is its own ecosystem that reveals value in what was once viewed as waste. Plastic Bank has a chain of stores for the ultra, ultra poor where everything in the store is available to be purchased by using plastic garbage as currency. Plastic Bank is able to offer school tuition, medical insurance, wifi, and cell phone minutes, power, fuel, and food. For your efforts completing this monster 40 question survey, we will be offering a chance to win an Amazon Echo. I just got one, they make your life a lot easier. Just go to myfoodjobrocks.com/survey I met David before joining Isagenix during my first meeting in Cactus IFT, the Arizona section of IFT. When I interviewed at Isagenix about a year later, I said “wait, I know you” Over time, David and I have become best coworkers and we talk about food, travel, IFT leadership stuff, and developing cool products for Isagenix. David is passionate about many things. Nutrition, exercise science, traveling, nature and of course, food science. He is a writer, or rather, a writer who manages other writers. However, as an avid learner, David decided to get his Certified Food Scientist certification after being heavily involved in IFT. Whether you’re interested in the CFS certification or not, we talk about the whole process and what it takes to become one including some insider and candid tips for success. Since David is a science writer, we also talk about how to write well, and where to find information to write about. For example, some websites and organizations have more credibility than others, and the source that not many people know about, happens to be nutrition conferences! About David David Despain, MS, CFS, is a science and health writer, a nutritionist, and a budding Certified Food Scientist who is based in Gilbert, Arizona. David has had over a decade of experience being involved in the world of food and nutrition yet he only recently earned his CFS credential from the Institute of Food Technologists in August 2017. He’s currently the Director of Science Communications within the Research and Development Department at Isagenix, a health-and-wellness company. Previously, David has also written for various publications about food and nutrition including Food Technology magazine, American Society for Nutrition’s Nutrition Notes Daily, Outside Online, and Scientific American Online. L. David Marquet (@ldavidmarquet) had spent a year preparing to captain a submarine in the U.S. Navy. But at the last minute, he was assigned to a different submarine. Not only was it a different ship than the one he had prepared for, it was also the worst ship in its fleet. It was so bad, only three men had reenlisted. Since David didn't know the ship, and since the situation was so bad, he had to try something different. Instead of using the leader/follower model, he started using a new leader/leader model. Instead of David giving orders, and instead of his men asking permission, he started empowering each sailor to think for himself. You may have heard Jason Fried on episode 1 recommend David's book Turn the Ship Around. In it, David Marquet tells the story of how his leader/leader model turned the USS Santa Fe from worst to first. The year after David took command of the ship, 36 men reenlisted, instead of just 3. In the decade following, 10 of those men would go on to become submarine captains themselves. David was in Medellín, and I sat down with him to talk about this and more: How does the leader/leader model save mental energy for everyone involved? How can you encourage your micromanaging boss to use leader/leader? How did David go from being a submarine captain, to writing a book that USA Today calls one of the top 12 business books of all time. How did he learn to tell stories, and how did he actually get the writing done? David Holt, CE instructor and owner of HoltCPE, shared his time with us on this episode of Life In Accounting: The Where Accountants Go podcast. Since David generally gets paid for speaking on some of these topics, I very much appreciated him taking the time out to record this podcast. 24 years David's entrance into the continuing education world started when he began teaching in-house classes for the CPA firm he worked for early in his career. He enjoyed teaching and so he expanded into providing courses after-hours while still working during the day, and then eventually went full-time into the business in 1993. Handling ethical dilemmas… We talk quite a bit in this episode about how to prevent ethical situations from arising in the first place, as well as how to navigate the issue when they unfortunately do come up. One of the comments I found most valuable is that David talks about how to make the situation a win-win by treating the situation as one where you are protecting the individual from getting into trouble, as opposed to turning it into an adversarial conversation. Proudest moment – Not what you may think… I rarely mention a guest's ‘proudest moment' in the show-notes, but in this case it's something that definitely warrants inclusion on this page. I'll let you hear the details from David himself in the recording, but suffice it to say that helped a family friend through an addiction issue that may have ultimately saved their life. (As a side note, TSCPA has an assistance program as well to address these needs. Visit the site for the Accountants Confidential Assistance Network at https://www.tscpa.org/advocacy/acan for details.) David was very open and transparent in this podcast and I hope you benefit from the frank discussion. We hope to have you join us again soon… there's more to come! What if seeing posterior composites on your schedule gave you the same warm, fuzzy feeling as a crown prep on #14? We make no promises, but the Bioclear method can help! We pick up where we left off with Dr. David Clark talking about the Bioclear system, specifically the "Diamond Wedge." Since David is a dentist, he spent a bunch of years addressing problems that dentists have run into with posterior composites and designed solutions that everyday restorative dentists can use to take the drudgery out of direct restorations! You'll hear David discuss the problem of "back to back" composites and his tricks to avoid poor contacts as well as how to choose wedge sizes and separation rings for regular cases. Finally, David and Jeremy discuss how the "Rock Star Polish" and how they invented Magic Mix to make the polishing process simple and consistent. Honestly...if you hear one thing in episode 124 it's trying out Magic Mix. Man is that stuff awesome! Jason and Alan regroup in the second half of the episode to be their very own Brain Trust. Since David was unavailable this week, we were fortunate enough to have Aaron Hall (@GoodThings2Life) join us for episode 74. Both Aaron and Vernon discuss some of their experiences regarding the two keynote sessions held on Monday. Skype Rooms Systems, the ridiculous number of Skype apps, changes to OneDrive Selective Sync, and leaked Surface peripheral devices are talked about. The discussion continues, with the topics features moving towards parity among Office apps on all platforms, the general shift that email communication taking, the specific Outlook variations, including Focused Inbox, Black Theme coming to the preview pane, and broad new UI changes to the Win32 and web versions. The two finish off the show by venturing into the speculation zone regarding what they think what will happen, and what should happen with the Surface line of products. Thanks for listening!
