My newsletter: https://simonowens.substack.com/ When Jared Newman launched his Cord Cutter Weekly newsletter back in 2016, the streaming TV market was much smaller than it is today, with most TV networks either not having their own streaming app or requiring a cable subscription to access it. But as it turned out, he timed his launch perfectly, as it was only a matter of years before virtually every Hollywood studio pivoted to streaming. Today, his newsletters has over 32,000 subscribers, and a spinoff newsletter that gives tech advice has also grown to 1,200 paying members. In our interview, we discussed his motivation for launching the newsletter, why his editor let him promote it at the end of his columns, and whether he ever wants to leave his freelance career entirely to just focus on growing his two newsletters.

In this Weeks Show Justin, Shawn and Andy start the show talking about Shawn getting ready to install his Synology NAS System. Shawn is testing drives he purchased with HD Tune Pro which can tell how long a drive has been in use and other useful info. Justin tells us why Synology is much more then just extending storage on the system but can also be used to run a multitude of services such as Docker which can then run PiHole, DNS Blackhole, Minecraft Server, Virtual Machines and more including his Plex Server which can always run under the Synology. The guys talk about Plex and how the service has grown over the years. Shawn and Justin both did the lifetime sub for Plex, and the guys recommend this as a way to go. Cord Cutters can use HD Homerun for recording Over the Air Television and use it like a DVR and can be served over the Plex Server. The newest product from Silicon Dust is the HD Homerun 4K. Justin explains why OTA delivers a better picture then Cable. Shawn tells us about the Latest Time lapse, and it included some snow! We learn a bit on how he creates these great looking Time Lapse creations and some software to help called LRTimeLapse which Shawn feels is one of the best. Justin reminds us about data collection and how we are the product and why your browser will feed you ads based on information you searched for. With this info, Justin shares info on Network Chuck and how he explains how you could create your own Search Engine using SearxNG. Justin recommends NotGoogle.live created by Network Chuck. Andy talks about migrating a Windows 10 system with corruption in Windows which was preventing Windows Update from completing. Users purchased a new system with Windows 11. Rather than reinstall all the programs and must relink the Database to network drives, reconnect printers, Andy purchased Laplink PCMoverProfessional and while the time to do was about 5 hours it worked flawlessly! The crew talks about some of the many different versions of Windows over the years and what they liked while Andy has been banned from talking about Windows 8. Shawn lets us know that Windows 8.1 support is ending January 10th, 2023. Shawn and Justin talks about making the move for listeners to Upgrade while Shawn also decides to try doing an install of Windows 8.1 to see if it was really as bad as a lot said. Shawn, Justin and Andy talk about Cyber Monday and each shares a tip to be safe shopping online. Justin talks about getting back into Cyberpunk2077 from CDProjekt Red and how much better the title has gotten since its first release and why. Connect with Us on social media! AT&T TV How many TV services does AT&T have? Let's count them. There is DirecTV, U-Verse, AT&T TV Now, and AT&T Watch TV. Kind of confusing huh. Well there is one more newly minted TV service from AT&T simply named AT&T TV. AT&T TV is a TV service that does not require a dish or cable connection but does require a set top box. In this case an Android based box. You need at least a 25Mbps internet connection but higher speeds will get higher quality streams. There is no installation from a professional. You simply plug in the set top box, connect it to the Internet and then to your TV. There are three packages ranging in price from $50 to $65 for the first 12 months but you need to sign up for a 24 month commitment. After the first year the prices go up! Plus you pay taxes and fees. Sound familiar? Other features include a cloud based DVR, Sports packages, and Premium channels. AT&T will continue to accept new signups for all it's TV services and has said that none of them are going away. Why? This does not make sense to us. There is no compelling reason to choose this service over any of the other streaming services out there. Especially those that do not have any commitments including AT&T TV Now. What are your thoughts? Comments from around the Internet So....basically everything we hate about cable. Contracts plus bait and switch.Ohh. and a set top box. This is a Bait and Switch Program. they give you an OK price to start with, but you have to do 2 Year Contract. Year 2 the prices goes up to the same cost as what Satellite and Cable. So the whole point with Cord Cutters is to reduce cost which this does not do and it locks you in for 2 years. Hard Pass… Wow! 1981 all over again. Are they kidding? Any idea what the competition is doing? What the landscape looks like? A box? This is just stupid. Sorry. DOA! Someone at AT&T should be fired over this. Probably not though. Is AT&T television the new BlackBerry - clueless? I'm so confused by this offering. Who is the target market here?? Contracts? A set top box? Fees? Bundles? Price per month nearly doubles after one year? Sounds a lot like... cable. Do they think it's still 1985?
Confessions of a Cord Cutter We received a great email from our listener Dennis Comfort describing his journey to becoming a cord cutter. Well maybe a cord swapper. Whatever you call it he saved $90 a month! Thank you Dennis for sharing your experience with us! First, why did I do it? I've had Comcast for years, used to have Century Link (fiber), and also at Directv at one point. Directv was ok in my old house, but where I live now, there are simply too many trees and I didn't feel like fishing coax cable runs through my house. I tried Comcast again, and had it for a while, then the Century Link sales guys showed up on my front door and convinced me that my life would be better. What I found, after switching, was that 1) their DVR user interface was a shambles, their Internet was sometimes intermittent, and frankly, I missed my Tivo. So, goodbye Century Link, hello Comcast (again). Been on Comcast for the last several years and have happily enjoyed my Tivo Bolts (two of them in the house). However, my Comcast bill was getting out of hand. I decided to look for alternatives. Cost drove this decision. Requirements I did consider keeping Comcast -- didn't look forward to training the family on another user interface. I created myself a list of decision criteria to help drive the planning: Reduce the monthly bill. Keep getting local channels including PBS. Keep network channels. No need for 500 channels - I probably watch 10-20 of them. Need to be able to record and watch shows later. Need solid internet connection for home/work stuff. Need at least 1080P, 4K would be great (my Bolts already do 4K as does my FireTV). One of my TVs is Samsung 50" 1080P, the other is 65" Sony 4K. Minimize the number of remotes (before the switch, I had two --- FireTV, and a Harmony One remote). I don't want to go into the walls and move cables. We also do watch Netflix, Prime Video, and Hulu. Also watch HBO and Showtime. Alternatives Keep Comcast - and the biggest reason I would have done that would have been if my final new monthly bill was within a few dollars of Comcast - then not worth switching. Century Link - no. Directv - no. Apple TV 4K with a streaming service Sony Playstation Vue YouTube TV Hulu TV Keep in mind that as of today, no streaming service provides access to PBS; for that, I need Comcast or an OTA antenna. What I Did Installed free trials of Vue and HuluTV. Didn't consider YouTubeTV but I can't remember why. HuluTV and Vue could go relatively neck and neck on features; there are distinct UI differences, but Hulu didn't offer HBO and Showtime; Vue has both. I bought an Apple TV 4K and signed up one month of Vue Core plus HBO/Showtime. I bought an inexpensive OTA HD antenna and stuck to an inside wall of the house (too far to reach the windows and not burying cables) to see if it was good enough. What I found out OTA HD antenna, even again an inside wall, works GREAT, especially for PBS.. it's not perfect, and now then it will pixelate, but I don't care. I love Apple TV 4k. I'm looking forward to the Apple TV + content. it helped, i'm sure, that our house is already deep into the Apple ecosystem (despite the fact that I swore off Macs and Apple for years while I worked for a large software company with an M in the name). The Apple TV does a great job at being THE UI into all of my content except PBS (I can live with that). I am hooked on Multiview with Playstation Vue so I can have up to four PIPs on my screen at once and switch between them. It's convenient that the Harmony remote will control EVERYTHING (the family room set up is the Samsung 50" and a Sony soundbar/subwoofer setup (with HDMI switching) so one remote does it. Or you can still use the Apple remote and even control the volumne on the amp. What Isn't Great The Apple TV remote glass trackpad can be a bit squirrely - I have it set on the lowest response setting and it's still takes some practice -- but we can live with it. Sony Vue is great, but there are a few bugs... yesterday I was watching the Seattle Seahawks throw away the game to Baltimore and concurrently was switching back and forth to the movie, US Marshalls. After about 10-15 switches, Vue got confused and mixed up the two shows so that if you chose football, you got the movie and vice versa. Easy fix... re-add both shows, but still a bug. Can't really skip commercials any more. Oh well. I do miss Tivo, BUT.... I got to thinking about this... we probably only watch 10% of all the content record with Tivo. And, we don't really need to record Tivo-style any more as we can stream pretty much anything anything. So as much as I teared up just a tad as I disconnected the Bolts, they aren't needed. (one of your shows talked about how Tivo has missed the boat in several areas... too bad we can't get a Tivo app on the set top boxes.. i'd pay for that). Result I'm saving about $90 /month in Comcast costs, and I got a new deal on my internet so my throughput doubled from 500mbps to 1Gbps for $6 less to Comcast (from what Internet-only would have been for 500mbps). I bought a second Apple TV for the theater room (65" Sony) and all is good. I'm happy. I can live with some of the nuances, and I'm free from the cable company.... for content. We will see how the next 6 months goes.. so far, so good.

What we're thankful for '17 Each year at this time of year we do a show where we discuss what we are thankful for. There are the obvious things to be thankful for like our families, especially our wives who put up with our home theater obsessions. And of course we are thankful for you, the listener/reader of our show. So as is tradition over the last many Thanksgivings, on today's show we give you our list of consumer electronics things we are thankful for. For 2017: Ara's List: DirecTV Now (IPTV) - This is a follow on to last years Cord Cutter. DirecTV Now and all the other IPTV companies have made it easy to take your TV with you on the go. Plus you don't need to install any special hardware. Download some apps and you are good to go. My TV bill went from over $200 to $35! It's not perfect. I'm still waiting on a cloud based DVR and the quality is less than DirecTV but It's still pretty good! Movies Anywhere - It used to be that if I bought a disc and it only had a Ultraviolet digital code I couldn't watch it on my AppleTV. Then I added Vudu which allowed me to watch the movies but I had to use either iTunes or Vudu. Now with Movies Anywhere I can watch them all in one app! Falling Prices and Larger Screens - 85 inches for less than $4K?? Are you kidding me. This is a no brainer. Or if your room isn't big enough for an 85 inch TV how about 55 inch UHD with Dolby Vision for $500? Yes it's a good time to be alive! Netflix/Amazon/Hulu - When I was growing up there were three networks for TV and only about 20 hours of programming. Sure we used to read and visit with people but where's the fun in that? Now with the addition of streaming we get more content than we can watch. Throw in HBO, USA, AMC, and others competing for your limited free time and you can pretty much guarantee that one of these networks will create content that you will be interested in. Now I just need to learn how to get by on less sleep! DIY Audio - I am having a blast building speakers. The quality is quite good. Can you buy better speakers for much less hassle? Of course you can. But there is something really gratifying about building and listening to speakers you built. You can start out with a simple kit or design something that says something about you. Either way you'll have fun! And since these speakers will probably still be working long after you are gone, you can leave a little of you behind for your family to remember you by. Braden's List Mesh Wifi - We just moved into a new house and it's a bit older than our prior house. The prior house had ethernet run to every room. The current does not so we have to rely even more on wifi. Not sure what the walls are made of in this old house, concrete, titanium, your-wifi-no-workatonium, but wifi is terrible. Without mesh wifi like Google Wifi, we'd be without Internet in places where we really want it. 4K Televisions - There's the obvious reason we've talked about to love 4K TVs or Ultra High Definition itself, it pushed 3D straight out of our lives. But it has also helped to push down prices of all TVs across the board - first by pushing 1080p TV prices down, then by starting a vicious price war for 4k TVs that has included a bunch of new bargain manufacturers. Just like the early push in HDTV, the bargain brands may not survive, but for now they're really helping us all get 4K TV upgrades. Netflix (also Amazon, Hulu, HBO online, etc) - The classic joke about Cable used to be that we had 300 channels but nothing to watch. Not anymore. When was the last time you even channel surfed? You don't have to anymore. If there's nothing on the DVR, or nothing you're feeling into at that moment, you just pop open one of the streaming apps and see what's there. You'll probably find a movie you remember coming out that you never saw, or a new series someone recommended that you haven't started yet. There's always something on now. Automation devices - Yes. I had this on my list last year. But honestly with every smart device I add, it just keeps getting better. That's the beauty of DIY automation, you can add to it in small steps, piece by piece as you have time and resources to get it done. This year I joined the automated door lock club and it's awesome. The kids don't need house keys. Friends and family can get in without having to hide a key. It's great. Also added a smart doorbell. It's super annoying, but also really cool too. Home Depot - I really wanted to say Amazon, but after the year we had with them, I just couldn't get myself to do it. It is an amazing company. And I bought the most items from them to help us prepare our old home to be sold and get settled in the new one, including a faucet and a new TV (but not that TV just yet). But the place I visited second most to get everything for the move out and move in was Home Depot. So I'm thankful for Home Depot always having just what I needed, and when they didn't Amazon did.

Tivo Mantis...Cord Cutter's Dream box? We have read countless emails from listeners who have cut the cord over the years and many of them have turned to Tivo to become the center of that process. With an antenna and a Tivo box you can cut your TV subscription services to almost nothing. Tivo boxes support Hulu, Netflix, Youtube, Plex, and Amazon Prime so you really don't have to give up everything. Yes there are cable channels that you may miss, but many of those have an app where you can watch some of the programming for free. Worst case you may need to buy a few season passes of a couple of TV shows that are not available through an app. Regardless, you should be able to watch everything you want and dramatically cut your yearly bill. Tivo even has options for those who want to connect multiple TVs through a network connection. The $150 Tivo Mini will connect a bedroom TV to the main Tivo Unit bringing the full Tivo experience to any room in the house without any additional fee. A typical multi room setup can run about $750 including a year of the TV service. Compare that to $1,200 ($50/month 24 month min required) for a basic level of DirecTV service. For some this is still a bit steep because you have to come up with the money up front. Well we have heard that Tivo is working on a new box called the Mantis. It is a headless network DVR box that may change everything for the cord cutter. It's a box that isn't much bigger than than Roku or AppleTV that connects to an antenna and then transcodes the signal for viewing by other devices. It's not clear if it will come equipped with a hard drive or will require an external drive for storage. Tivo will also include an app for viewing what's on the Mantis for AppleTVs, Rokus, and the FireTV as well as the apps for tablets and smartphones. That means that you can now bury the Mantis in any room that has a network (or within range of Wifi) and antenna connection. With minimal details at this time we can only speculate on the feature set. Our wish list would include: Online viewing of live and recorded content - This is kind of like a personalized Aereo service and slingbox all rolled into one. Offline viewing of recorded content - It would be nice to be able to catch up on all the TV that is piling up on your DVR without needing an Internet connection. Cloud Support - No need to open up ports on your router. This makes setup and use much easier. Content Archiving - It would also be nice if the content on your local drive could be archived to iCloud, Amazon, or Google Drives Tivo has not confirmed or denied that the Mantis actually exists. The information has been gleaned from an FCC filing. Look for the Mantis to be announced at CES in January. Or you can pick up a Tablo (Buy Now $199) right now. It doesn't have all the features we discussed but it will give you access to your DVR from anywhere you have a network connection.
