Dale resides with his family in Bend, Oregon. Favorite Success Quote “Never get too busy making a living that you forget to make a life”~Dolly Parton Key Points 1. Accountability is Key On your path to becoming the best man that you can be, there are a couple of key ingredients that, if you are lacking, will cause you to fail miserably. One of those keys is accountability. You have to have strong men in your life who are willing to speak truth and push you to become your best self. Men who are willing to call you out on your weaknesses and affirm your strengths. Without a strong support system you will fail. It is essential to your success as a man, in business, marriage, and personal growth that you develop this accountability and stick to it. 2. Men Are Overly Courageous in Business and Fearful in Family A huge problem with men today is that they are courageous in business and timid in their family lives. They draw all of this satisfaction from succeeding on the front of business, making millions and achieving their dreams, that they forget to be good fathers, husbands, and sons. If you want to live up to your full potential as a man, you have to have a balance between both. You have to succeed in business so that you can provide for your family, but you also have to be willing to sacrifice a bigger paycheck to be the man that your family needs. 3. Build Generosity into Your Life One of the cornerstones of being a good man is being generous. If you want to live a life of purpose and fulfillment, build generosity into your life, don’t sprinkle it in as an afterthought. Give your time, money, and resources to charities that you believe in, be willing to listen to the homeless guy on the street, sit and have a conversation with someone in need. Be generous in all areas of your life and it will come back to you, but more importantly, at the end of the day when you meet your maker, you will have a clean conscience and a full heart.

For Purpose & Profit

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 30, 2019 24:45

On today's episode, we're talking about "Conscious Capitalism" — a philosophy stating that businesses should serve all principal stakeholders, including the environment. It does not minimize profit-seeking but encourages the assimilation of all common interests into the company's business plan. Did you know that there over 1.5 million nonprofit organizations in the U.S. alone? Did you also know that over 700 of them go out of business every single day? That sad truth is that these nonprofit organizations, along with many "for profit" organizations as well, fail because they don't know how to maximize both of the necessary bottom lines — Social impact AND profit. The nonprofits' good intentions are capped and undermined due to a lack of financial resources, while the large corporations acquire an abundance financial resources at the cost of the well-being of their employees, their consumers, the greater society, and the environment. Nonetheless, companies like Sevenly, Toms shoes, and Panera are breaking the current system and doubling down on BOTH their bottom lines for the good of all. A new wave of conscious capitalism is on the rise.

But is it POSSIBLE to turn that passion into a full time income? Is it possible to not spend every day going through the motions, but to wake up every day looking FORWARD to getting to work? Can we do work that both fuels our passion while also making a profit? Yes, I truly believe the answer is YES. My guest this week is Marisa Flacks, the founder of RISE Creative. Marisa has actually become a dear friend of mine over the past 7 months or so, and I have come to really love and admire her. Her branding agency that specializes in working with businesses in the ethical and sustainable space is amazing and Marisa is so knowledgable and honestly SO wise beyond her years. You are going to ADORE her.  About Marisa: Marisa is the Ethical Brand Strategist behind RISE Creative. To many people, a dress symbolizes things like fragility, weakness, inequality, outdated dress code rules, societal pressures, gender roles… There was a time when a woman would be literally scoffed at for wearing anything OTHER than a dress. And for centuries, women have fought to press on and buck trends and fight stereotypes, and obviously a woman wearing pants or wearing shorts isn’t thought of as anything crazy or remarkable today… but could a woman wearing a dress actually change the world? Could the “dress” be reclaimed into a symbol of power and freedom and purpose? We think so…  My guest this week is Blythe Hill, the founder of DRESSEMBER, an international movement of women and men who are raising money to fight to end human trafficking. I wanted to hear Blythe’s story and learn about how she got this incredibly amazing movement started and I LOVED our conversation! I am actually participating in Dressember this year and I am pledging to wear a dress every day during the month of December… Yes, even if it is freezing out. I would be so honored and grateful if you’d consider donating to my Dressember fundraiser! My goal is $6,300 and that would fund the rescue operation of one woman, man, or child who is trapped in the bondage of modern day slavery. Your donation is 100% tax deductible and you can donate HERE. I hope you love this episode as much as I do! ABOUT BLYTHE:  Blythe Hill is the CEO and Founder of the Dressember Foundation, an anti-trafficking nonprofit organization that engages women and men in the fight to end modern-day slavery. Through their annual campaign, thousands of people across six continents commit to wearing dresses or bow ties for the month of December as a way to bring awareness and raise funding for anti-trafficking work. In four years, Dressember advocates have raised over $3MM USD. Originally hailing from Seattle, Blythe now lives in Los Angeles with her husband and their puppy, Friday. She loves a good red wine, a good cheese, and a good pun.  CONNECT WITH BLYTHE AND DRESSEMBER: https://dressember.org http://www.facebook.com/officialdressember http://instagram.com/dressember https://twitter.com/Dressember https://www.pinterest.com/dressember/ https://www.instagram.com/blythehill/ TODAY'S BUSINESS WITH PURPOSE PODCAST EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY: CAUSEBOX - use code "MOLLY" for $15 off your first box! We can all agree to two truths.... Life is beautiful and life is also tough. We all spend time trying to figure out what our purpose is or what we are supposed to do or what job we were meant for. We work hard, we do our best... and then life happens. Maybe it’s a broken relationship, a financial crisis, a death of a loved one, a divorce, or getting fired from a job... and we get into this mindset that life is awful and all these bad things are happening TO us... but have you ever thought that maybe these things are happening FOR us?  My guest this week is Shaniqua Cousins... Shaniqua is an author and inspirational speaker... let me tell you... our conversation is one of my favorites and she really challenged me to think differently and live differently. We talk about relationships, business, life, death, and race... we cover it all! I even share some really personal things about my own experiences with my mother's death that I haven't shared with many people before. It was a powerful conversation and I know you’re going to be changed by this episode.  Connect with Shaniqua: http://www.shaniquacousins.com/ https://twitter.com/CousinsSL https://www.instagram.com/shaniqualcousins/ https://www.facebook.com/ShaniqualCousins/ About Shaniqua:  For over two decades Shaniqua Cousins has been a leader and inspiration to many. There are two types of people… people who say and people who do. I’ve spent a good portion of my life trying to be someone who does… not just someone who says. Let’s be honest, this isn’t always easy. When we see a problem in the world, it can be really easy to say, “gosh, someone should really do something about that.” It’s a whole lot more difficult to actually be the one to say, “Maybe that someone is me…” Is there something in your life or in your world that is heavy on your heart? Is there an issue you’re passionate about? A calling you feel on your life? Have you been talking about doing something for a long time but you haven’t actually taken the steps to DO it? Maybe today’s the day you take that first step to, well… actually do it.  My guest this week is Lia Valerio, the founder of MALIA DESIGNS, a fair trade handbag and accessory brand that is employing disadvantaged people in Cambodia and also directly impacting the anti-human trafficking movement. I love Lia and I love this company and I can’t wait for you to hear her story…  About Lia Valerio:  Lia Valerio is the Founder and President of Malia Designs, a socially responsible fair trade brand that designs and sells handbags and accessories.  Malia’s products are handcrafted in Cambodia and every purchase helps to fight Human Trafficking. While traveling through SE Asia, after serving in the Peace Corps in the South Pacific, Lia fell in love with the kind and generous people of Cambodia and its rich and beautiful culture. During her initial trip to the region in 2000, she purchased many textiles and was also introduced to several fair trade organizations that worked with marginalized populations to expand their access to sustainable income. In 2005, Malia Designs was formed to increase economic opportunity for women in Cambodia and to support organizations that fight Human Trafficking. Lia continues to be inspired by the artisans she works with and deeply appreciative of the opportunity to make a positive impact through Malia. Lia lives in Evanston, IL (just outside of Chicago) and is happily married and the mother of two beautiful children.  Connect with Malia Designs: http://www.maliadesigns.com/ - use code "MOLLY25" for 25% off your order! https://www.facebook.com/carrythecause https://twitter.com/maliadesigns https://www.pinterest.com/maliadesigns/ https://www.instagram.com/maliadesignsfairtrade/ TODAY'S BUSINESS PODCAST EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY: CAUSEBOX - use code "MOLLY" for $15 off your first box! "Duty is ours. Results are Gods." -John Quincy Adams That quote also happens to be the mantra for Jim Van Eerden, co-founder of Sevenly. Jim has been a serial entrepreneur for most of his life... he's worked in the entertainment industry as an executive producer on major films, he's worked in brand management working for major organizations like the Olympic national committee, the World Cup, and Pepsi. He has worked alongside media powerhouses like Mia Hamm and Serena Williams. And he co-founded Sevenly in 2011 with a desire to change the way consumers felt connected to the causes they cared about.  We also had an important conversation surrounding the controversy that Sevenly experienced a couple of years ago. They have since recovered and have done a great job of rebuilding the brand, but Jim very candidly discusses what happened and how they took an unconventional approach to repairing the damage. Jim is also a strong man of faith and a believer in family. He and his wife Rachel have 11 children, including a son they adopted from Ecuador who was, quite literally, found naked in a trash bag as an infant.  Jim's business savvy is strong, his faith runs deep, and he has a passion for business unlike any other person I have had the pleasure of meeting in my life. Jim's belief is that people are looking for an opportunity to standup and fight for the beautiful, the good, and the true. People are passionate about being, not barking. People want to do, not yell and fight.  This conversation is one that is going to inspire so many to take action. ABOUT JIM: Jim Van Eerden is a serial entrepreneur with a heart for serving others. He co-founded Sevenly in 2011, outfitting world changers in new “cause art” every week, benefitting multiple causes, all under the same mission, “because people matter.” Besides being an intelligent businessman, he is also the loving father of eleven children, and on the foundational teams of many other businesses, non-profits, and charities.  CONNECT WITH JIM AND SEVENLY: https://www.sevenly.org/ https://twitter.com/sevenly https://instagram.com/sevenly https://facebook.com/sevenly.org https://pinterest.com/sevenly Join my Purchase with Purpose Facebook group and let's continue the conversation! https://www.facebook.com/groups/purchasewithpurpose/ Subscribe to the podcast (and I'd love it if you left a review** on iTunes!) Over the last few weeks on this podcast, we’ve been doing some intensive tactical trainings. We’ve talked about adding upsells to your sales promotions, adding bonuses, when to add them. We’ve talked about the mindset of list building, and then we’ve gotten really specific about what you need to do to build your list. Today I want to step back a little bit and look at the big picture and look at our team and how we’re running our business and setting things up. I thought there was no one better to do that than my new friend, Dale Partridge. You probably already know Dale, either from Sevenly (the company he founded that became one of the fastest growing social-good startups in history), or from his many keynote speeches and feature interviews on the topic of doing business with integrity, or maybe from his recent book People Over Profits. Dale is a creative leader whose mission is to influence an industry to rethink the models of how we do business today. And I invited him on the show today to help you (and me) learn about how to set a solid foundation for our long-term success. One thing Dale's book really dials into is the importance of recognizing the pivotal moments in our businesses when small decisions could have major impact. Dale went into business for himself at 18 years old...which means that even though he's still a young man, he's old in entrepreneur years. Within that time, he says, his whole mindset around business shifted from making major profits to making a major difference in people's lives. "In the search for purpose and meaning I wanted to create a company that was more than just putting money at the bottom line. It wasn’t until I really shifted my thinking from how to make a million dollars to how to help a million people that really pushed me into business." This is the core of Dale's "people over profits" message . . . and what I really want to stress in today's episode is that it's never too early in your business to think about how you're prioritizing people against your profits. When you're in the early years of building our business, you're all too aware that every interaction in every business relationship matters. You're hyper-focused on bringing real, personal value to your customers with your unique talent and expertise, because you know that it's the key to your success. But Dale points out that greed, dishonesty and customer contempt are not relegated to big corporations . . . that's just when they get caught in a big way. It's super important, he says, to set the foundation of your business integrity in these early years, while you're small, and learn how to self-correct in those moments when it's easy to make small compromises. "I don’t want to be the most successful person that nobody respects or that nobody trusts. And I don’t want to create the biggest company that has great products but people don’t really connect with it." Dale has done some impressive research on the most successful companies (and the ones who fell the hardest) of the past century. According to his research, the companies (and leaders) who really stood the test of time have seven core beliefs in common: People matter. Truth wins. Transparency frees. Authenticity attracts. Quality speaks. Generosity returns. Courage sustains. Listen to the full episode to hear Dale explain more about how these principles show up in online business practice, and how we can train ourselves to build businesses that uphold them. "Whatever your dream is, make sure you crush on it because it’s not about you, it’s about them." In the end, Dale says, our businesses' potential for growth is dependent on the integrity we build into our relationships with clients, vendors and colleagues. It can take real courage to honor a long-term relationship over short-term convenience. But that kind of courage is what creates a brand that really stands the test of time.

Dale Partridge was riding high, or so it seemed.A serial entrepreneur and founder of the cause-driven venture, Sevenly, the media loved him and thrust him into the spotlight. Sevenly venture was not only making money, it had also raised more than $4 million for hundreds of causes and more than a million people. From the outside looking in, everything was fantastic. But, inside, he was dying. Living a life at a pace that was destroying him, pulling him away from his family, ruining his health and making him question everything.Eventually, he hit the wall. And he decided to make some major shifts. Stepping away from the company he started, he picked up his family and moved to Bend, Oregon, a small town 3 hours from Portland to start the painstaking process of rebuilding his life, his health and his living. Reconnecting with the people and things that mattered, starting with his family. His recent book, People Over Profit, shares this story, taking you inside the lifestyle implosion that led to a good life evolution.I had a chance to sit down with Dale in his recording studio in Bend this summer to talk about everything from entrepreneurship to family, design and community, why people share things ("people don't share ugly!"), why being different matters and even the potential impact city-living has on life.

Life on Fire TV (Audio) – Online Business Coaching With Nick Unsworth

Hey hey! Welcome to episode 139 of Life on Fire TV. Today we’re talking to one of the top 3 people I know living a life on fire, Mr. Cole Hatter.  Cole joins us for his second visit, and this time we’re talking about prospering with purpose and making money matter. Check it out on today’s episode of Life on Fire TV. Even though Cole’s been on the show before we didn’t spend a lot of time digging into his backstory, and that’s something we do on this episode.  Cole is an exceptional businessman, father, husband and friend. Ever since he was a child he wanted to make a measurable difference in the world. His first calling was to the brotherhood of firefighting.  But a severe car accident ended that dream, and also ended the life of one of his best friends. Cole remembers very little about the accident except the ER surgeon telling him someone must have plans for Cole because there’s no reason he should have survived. Just two months later Cole lost his other best friend in a tragic dirt bike accident. Buoyed by his church family and his internal commitment to his friends’ too-short lives, Cole was determined to make his life mean something. Because his friends had passed away far too early in their lives Cole was committed to making the rest of his life matter and be a testament to their memories. In this episode you’ll hear: Can money buy happiness? (16:00) One immediate way to stand out in a crowded marketplace. (17:20) Why you have a responsibility to run a profitable business. (26:00) How to create a for-purpose event: Cole breaks down the steps. (27:00) Why did Cole shoot videos for his upcoming event? (34:30) And so much more! And Cole has done that, he has prospered with purpose. And because of his commitment to living a life on fire, he is now teaching people how to prosper with purpose and how to make money matter. He says the two aren’t separate, you can and should have both!   In this episode Cole shares a simple way to practice this in your business whether you’re in the start up stage or you’re an existing organization: add a charitable angle to what you’re already doing.  You can give a portion or a percentage of all of your sales to a non-profit, and advertise that you are doing so. Let people know their money is going to a good cause, as well as to your business. And don’t worry about losing that money you donate, Cole believes your sales will actually increase because people love to contribute to organizations that do good. Not convinced? Think of these two companies: Tom’s Shoes and Sevenly. What are those two businesses really? They are a shoe company and an apparel company. And aren’t there already hundreds of thousands of companies in both of those spaces already? So why did they make such a splash, create brand loyalty and astronomical sales? Because they give a portion of their sales to non-profits, and people love to feel their purchases are going to help others.  Because he’s a man on a mission Cole is also spreading this message at his upcoming event, Thrive. His for-purpose event is to teach people how to make money, how to protect that money and how to make that money matter, create the most impact. And the proceeds are going to a non-profit, A Human Project our good friend Wesley Chapman spearheads. Have a listen as Cole breaks down the steps he took to create his event, and how he got some of the biggest names in the world to join him even though he had a tiny mailing list! Generosity is less like an arrow and more like a boomerang: it has a way of coming back to you. We all know business savvy is valuable, but it can only take you so far. The most successful businesses in the world put people first, whether that means members of their own team or anyone around the world. In this interview, I’m talking with Dale Partridge about his new book, People Over Profit. In it, he writes about the value of people, as well as values like generosity, transparency, accessibility, and vulnerability. Not only are these Dale's values, but they're the values of successful, conscious businesses. I love Dale’s personal approach to business and how he isn’t scared of inevitable growth and evolution.
