Saint-George is bestowed the title of Chevalier by the French Royal Court and is a favorite of Marie Antoinette Ledford shines the light on the many accomplishments and provides the social and cultural context in which Chevalier de Saint-George was acclaimed, including his transcendence of France's racial codes in the 18th century. I hope I find you well today and enjoying a strong stomach because we are looking at a particularly icky member of the Good People. It's hard to imagine anyone nominating this parasitic creature as a favourite but it sure is interesting, and a good one to know how to avoid. The Joint Eater, also known as the Alp Luachra, is a small newt-like creature which really likes Humans, from the inside-out…In this episode I share one extraordinary tale of an attack by a Joint Eater. We discover just how disgusting this creature can be, how easily it can catch a Human host and most importantly, how to rid yourself of one (and avoid them altogether!). * PATREONTo celebrate 2 years of our Podcast (yay! did someone say cake?...), I am delighted to launch ‘Encounters with the Good People' Patreon. Strange things happen in and around a Faerie Field. A Faerie Field is a field which is known to host or home members of the Good People, some fields are positively rife with activity, suggesting they may be a gathering place or even on a Faerie path. Faerie behaviour in and around Fairy Fields, is unpredictable and you can believe if a field has been given the name of a Fairy field, it is for good reason. Local folk having experienced or witnessed Fairy activity over generations have shared their tales for to caution others to be mindful in that location, and in this episode, we share 4 particularly strange tales. * PATREONTo celebrate 2 years of our Podcast (yay! did someone say cake?...), I am delighted to launch ‘Encounters with the Good People' Patreon. When is a broken heart more than just a broken heart? “Beware the tunes that touch your heart. The Gancanagh will play the soul Beware, sweet lass, don't crave his art He'll pierce your heart and leave a hole.” The Gancanagh, also known as the Love-Talker, is a member of the Good People you best hope you never encounter! He seduces decent, innocent women into falling madly in love with him. Once he has conquered her, the Gancanagh disappears, leaving her to pine her life away (literally!). You know the old saying “it's the quiet ones you want to watch”, well this applies perfectly to the Gancanagh, he wreaks havoc subtlety, in sweet whispers. And this perhaps is why he has been able to ply his particular trade for so very long. In this episode we ponder if the Gancanagh not only enjoys, but is nourished by, the misery and torment he causes. I hope you can join me for the chat. * PATREONTo celebrate 2 years of our Podcast (yay! did someone say cake?...), I am delighted to launch ‘Encounters with the Good People' Patreon. When you think of Faerie fairs or markets, your mind most likely turns to glorious colourful painting or illustration depicting an idyllic scene of various faerie characters browsing baskets of fruit or platters of cakes, musicians and dancers scattered about. It's a lovely image, isn’t it? On this week’s episode, we discover that Faerie do gather for markets, but they are less whimsy than you might imagine. There are many recorded accounts which show us that not only do the Good People hold their own markets, but they also take a keen interest in our own human markets and fairs too. I hope you can join me as we share some poems and true curious accounts of Faerie Markets. * PATREONTo celebrate 2 years of our Podcast (yay! did someone say cake?...), I am delighted to launch ‘Encounters with the Good People’ Patreon. The Power of Faerie Music Have you ever wished to hear Faerie music? I certainly have, even being aware of the risks, I fear I couldn’t resist the temptation should it ever present itself to me. And make no mistake, listening to or even just overhearing music of the Good People can be dangerous. But it depends doesn’t it, on the nature of the particular faerie… Some are delighted to have a Human audience, while others take great offence at the intrusion and charge a terrible price. I share tips on where and when you are most likely to hear Faerie Music and tales of those who have… and let you decide if you could resist the power of Faerie music. * PATREONTo celebrate 2 years of our Podcast (yay! did someone say cake?...), I am delighted to launch ‘Encounters with the Good People’ Patreon. The list of names at the end of some podcasts is mind-boggling. Who are these people? What do they do? Antonia Cereijido, Sophia Paliza-Carre, and Audrey Quinn of the "Norco 80" podcast have an answer and a few surprising observations about their production process.

“You must have a silver penny, To get into Fairyland…” Really? I’m not so sure. The Faerie have a very curious relationship with money, or the thing we call money. Did you know the Good People are known to give us money? They are also known to tease, taunt and test us using money. Through true tales, we discover the Faerie don’t take money as seriously as we do. For Them it is of no greater value than (and easily exchanged for) leaves or dirt. It’s just possible that their attitude toward cash currency could teach us how to live simpler, more meaningful lives. How? Tune in and find out. * PATREONTo celebrate 2 years of our Podcast (yay! did someone say cake?...), I am delighted to launch ‘Encounters with the Good People’ Patreon. When is a game more than just a game? The Good People love to have a good time, but did you know they are also passionate about sports? There are numerous accounts of folk playing games of Hurling and Football with the Good People, and at face value, this sure sounds like fun but… as with most other things, it can be very dangerous. If you play badly, the Faerie team you are playing with may threaten, punish, injure or curse you to death. If you play too well, the Faerie team you are playing against may threaten, punish, injure or curse you to death. Before you decide you decline an invitation to play Hurling or Football with the Good People consider this: you don’t have a choice. If the Faerie enlist you to play a ‘game’ with them, you must play. In this episode, we ponder why the Good People take their team sport games sooooo deadly seriously. * Fancy buying me a coffee? The Evil Eye: a blessing or a curse? In her book ‘Ancient Legends, Mystic Charms, and Superstitions of Ireland’ Lady Wilde believes that: “Nothing is more dreaded by the peasantry than the full, fixed, direct glance of one suspected of the Evil Eye, and should it fall upon them, or on any of their household, a terrible fear and trembling of heart takes possession of them, which often ends in sickness or sometimes even in death.” Safe to say, a person who has the Evil Eye may not be burdened with too many friends. In this episode we ponder how a person comes to possess the Evil Eye, are they born with it? Is it given them by the Good People? and can it be controlled? Join Kitty as she tries to figure out if there is a link tween the Evil Eye and the Good People. * Fancy buying me a coffee? Sometimes, people are said to be ‘Away with the Fairies’, or ‘In the Fairies’. It sounds quite nice doesn’t it? Think again! For reasons we can only guess, certain people are singled out to be taken away from their ordinary human lives to spend time among the Good People, only to be left back when the Good People are done with their company. We’re not talking about an isolated incident here, there are recorded accounts of people where this has been a regular occurrence, their families and communities aware of their habitual disappearing and returning. But why? Join Kitty for this very special 100th episode of Encounters with the Good People. * Fancy buying me a coffee? You know, the Good People might not celebrate Christmas but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy some seasonal fun. I don’t think the Good People will mind a bit if we follow a custom of our Ancestors and share some good old-fashioned ghost tales to see out the year! But these aren’t fictional stories, the 4 tales we share today are as real as you and me. True accounts of supernatural experiences and told in their own words by rural folk of Ireland 1938. Every tale you are about to hear… is true! * Fancy buying me a coffee? Did you know, there is a belief in Celtic mythology that the bee, the humble bee acts as a messenger between our world and the spirit realm? They are long believed to enjoy the freedom of moving between the worlds sharing messages and information. Some also believe the wisdom of bees was given to them by none other than Druids. On this week’s episode we pause to acknowledge just how important the wee bee is to us in a practical and spiritual sense. Through tales and poems, we discover that the Good People also enjoy a close connection with the bee, occasionally taking their appearance and fiercely guarding their hives from those who would cause trouble. We also visit the ancient custom of ‘Telling the Bees’ and find that within its rituals we come to understand how we can better live alongside the Good People. * Fancy buying me a coffee? The Good People have been around a long time. A really long time. Think of a long time, then multiply that by a really long time. You’re getting close. If you believe, as I do, that they are an intelligent race, (or group of clans), who have lived these many long ages, it follows their societies must take on some form of structure, some rules, or boundaries. Their society cannot be a complete free for all: if it was their carelessness and recklessness would result in them exposing themselves to us regularly. So it is that, from time to time, (not as often as us of course) the Good People enter into some form of conflict. On this week’s episode we listen to accounts from people who have witnessed the Faerie marching in procession, just as a Human army would, and engaging in battle. We ponder what Faerie battles might look like, what weapons they may use and if, even during conflict, they continue to protect the natural world. * Fancy buying me a coffee? When is a light not just a light? The Good People are masters at evading us. When it suits them, they can be impossibly elusive: appearing as nothing more than a shadow in the corner of our eye, or a feeling, a sense, within us that they are nearby. But what happens when they are so caught up in some activity, that they forget to shield themselves from Human eyes? On this week’s Podcast, we look at 3 true accounts of Faerie using extraordinary forms of light, crafted into spectacular presentations, and guaranteed to capture and hold the attention of passing Humans. Did the Faerie intend to ‘show off’ their mad-skills to these Humans, or was it just a lapse in their concentration? We ponder the source of these peculiar lights. Are they proof of the Faerie being ‘Nature Spirits’? Are these lights born of energy drawn from surrounding hills, trees and rivers? *Hi everyone, I have a mild cold and I’m a wee bit husky. In this very special episode of Encounters with the Good People, we immerse ourselves in great poets whose glorious words have expressed our sense of wonder and fear of the Good People over the ages. From poems which show us Faeries shining, clever, lithe and absolutely free. Living unhindered by the drudgery of our ordinary Human lives. Poems which sweep us away, make us wish to join Them. Show us the path which leads to the land of Faerie. But not all poets shine a light on the path. Some warn us that fear of Good People is not only justified, but wise: there are those who most certainly mean us harm and who are able, and eager, to take our lives. These poems simmer and rumble with the ever-present risk of encountering a Faerie. So, fill your boots and join me as we stroll around the glorious words of WB Yeats, Alice Guerin Crist, John Keats, Lord Dunsany, William Allingham, Dora Sigerson, Rose Fyleman and many more.Featuring very special guest, Storyteller Steve Lally.*Fancy buying me a coffee? If you enjoy Encounters with the Good People and would like to give me a hand to continue in this work, please consider buying me a ‘coffee’ (I prefer tea actually...).This is a really quick, simple and safe way for you to donate and support my work. Along with Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall and the Isle of Man, Brittany is one of the Celtic nations and enjoys its own unique Faerie folklore. As all keen Faerie observers will know: we must resist the temptation to judge a Faerie by its appearance. And so it is with the Corrigan of Brittany.Known for her beauty, golden tresses, sparkling eyes, moist lips and ever-beckoning arms, she delights in harassing, seducing and sometimes even destroying, human men. You see, below the shiny surface dwells a whip smart mind and a simmering resentment. Her feeling toward human men teetering on that fine line tween love and hate. Join Kitty as she ponders why the Corrigan carries a particular grudge against men of the clergy.Could it be the Corrigan, to this very day, is holding them accountable for the persecution and ultimate demise of their Ancestors? *Fancy buying me a coffee? If you enjoy Encounters with the Good People and would like to give me a hand to continue in this work, please consider buying me a ‘coffee’ (I prefer tea actually...).This is a really quick, simple and safe way for you to donate and support my work. It is long believed that when a person walks on a certain patch of grass growing on a mountain or field, they would suddenly be struck down, weak with hunger on the brink of collapse. If this person were not to eat food quickly, they might succumb to the hunger and be too weak to move or even call for help. This is known as the Hungry Grass and, as with the Stray Sod (episode 53), could effect anyone. No matter if they had walked the same patch of field or mountain a thousand times before, if they stepped on that patch of grass, they would be struck down with terrible hunger. On this week’s episode, we ponder why the Good People might do this?Is it just a practical joke played by the Faeries? Is it done as a form of punishment?Or could there be a higher purpose to this strange phenomenon?*Fancy buying me a coffee? If you enjoy Encounters with the Good People and would like to give me a hand to continue in this work, please consider buying me a ‘coffee’ (I prefer tea actually...).This is a really quick, simple and safe way for you to donate and support my work. No one wants to see a death coach.Even to see the back of it, riding past your house, or leaving town is no great comfort, for the mere passing of the Death Coach is a sign of an impending death. But that’s not all… the Death Coach also transports the body or spirit of those who have already passed. You will hear long before you see it: clanking wheels, cracking whips, rattling chains and stamping hooves, the Death Coach barrels down narrow lanes and dark roads on darkest nights. Most who hear the Death Coach approach scuttle theirselves behind closed doors and latched windows, but what can you do if you find yourself stranded outside? On this week’s episode, Kitty shares tips on what to do, how to avoid the Death Coach and gives fair warning on what you might find if you dare to open the coach door and take a peek inside…Fancy more Encounters with the Good People? You are cordially invited to join ‘Encounters with the Good People’ on YouTube. Beware the Stray Sod.Mind how you go, lest you step your foot upon a Stray Sod.This week, Kitty tackles the phenomena of the ‘Stray Sod’: an area of ground within a field which is affected/charmed/marked in some way by the Good People.Anybody can be struck by the Stray Sod. No matter if a person has walked the same field, or the same path every day of their life, if they stand on a Stray Sod under the darkness of night, will suddenly find themselves lost and entirely disoriented. Some folk find their way out by chance. Others, who lived to tell the tale, are led to the brink of deadly accident. Most are trapped within the field until dawn finds them, distraught and exhausted. Is this just a case of Faerie pranksters? Playing practical jokes on Humans to entertain themselves?Could it be a method used to punish or seek revenge on Humans who have wronged the Good People?Or, is their motivation more complex? Could it be the Good People trap a person until dawn for to keep them from their destination? Do they have the ability to foresee a future event, and if so, are they helping or hindering the person by trapping them?Curiouser and curiouser…This week, we take a closer peek at the multifaceted nature of the Good People.Fancy more Encounters with the Good People?Don’t forget to drop into the ‘Encounters with the Good People’ channel on YouTube, sit back with a cuppa and enjoy our lovely Podcast videos. Reverend Robert Kirk.Born - December 1644, Aberfoyle, Scotland.Taken by the Good People: May 1692, Aberfoyle, Scotland. Rev Kirk, also known as ‘The Fairy Minister’ was blessed (or cursed) with the skill of ‘Second Sight’. Second Sight allows a person to see, hear or interact with the Good People, and in some cases, bestows the person with great skills of healing. For Kirk, this led to an intense fascination with the Faerie of the highlands and lowlands of Scotland. Such so, it came to dominate his life, and some say, cause, his death.Others argue he has never died. But still, to this day, dwells among the Good People. On this week’s Podcast, Kitty takes a look at the strange life and mysterious death of Rev Robert Kirk and ponders:Did the Good People kill him in retaliation for him sharing their secrets?Did the Good People invite him to join them?Is Second Sight all its cracked up to be?Join Kitty to find out all this and much more! The Good People enjoy a party as much as we do, probably more, and more often too!How do they celebrate? And what does it mean for us?The Good People don’t observe our ‘festive’ calendar so it follows they don’t celebrate Christmas, New Year or St Patricks Day. But… there are so many sightings and encounters with the good people at play that we know they enjoy sumptuous food and drink, music, dancing, storytelling, games and a song and dance. It sounds fabulous doesn’t it?So why is it that some people who stumble upon, or are invited to join in a Faerie celebration end up disfigured or dead soon after?Join Kitty to find out!Fancy more Encounters with the Good People? For a daily peek at modern and historical encounters with the Good People, plus loads of great links, conversation starters and otherwise hard-to-find information on the Good People, visit Kitty’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/encounterswiththegoodpeopleOr, for a dose of Faerie on the go, drop into Kitty’s ‘Faerie Lucky Dip’ over at Instagram. No, not those kinds of Knockers! This week we’re venturing underground to take a peek at those elusive creatures who lurk in and around mine tunnels and caverns: Knockers, also known as Tommyknockers. Are they Faerie, could they be spirits or even ghosts? Are they kind and helpful to the miner? Leading him to rich pockets of ore, and warning him of imminent danger?Or are they cruel and dangerous? Leading him away from ore and into caverns filled with deadly gas or water? That depends on who you ask, but one thing we know for certain, many miners have seen and heard Knockers in England, and Tommyknockers in the U.S.Join Kitty as she takes a fresh look at these fascinating Faerie.Fancy more Encounters with the Good People? For a daily peek at modern and historical encounters with the Good People, plus loads of great links, conversation starters and otherwise hard-to-find information on the Good People, visit Kitty’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/encounterswiththegoodpeopleOr, for a dose of Faerie on the go, drop into Kitty’s ‘Faerie Lucky Dip’ over at Instagram. Writer, YouTuber, and Close Personal Friend Allison Raskin makes her return to the Podcast for 2 reasons: The first time she was on I don’t think she actually thought the podcast was real, and second, because she is a paragon of consistency and follow through. I don’t know anyone else as dependable, other than my mother, maybe? And so, feeling like I needed a refresher on getting shit done, and because people have asked for more Allison, we did round 2. I asked her exactly how she thinks about being consistent with her work, doing it no matter what, and always getting it out on time. And she really came through. I’ve actually listened to parts several times over the past week to remind myself and get into a certain mindset. I think, no matter what it is you do or have to do, you’ll find this episode very helpful. I should mention that since our last episode aired, Allison and her writing partner Gaby Dunn have a show in development with YouTube Red, they have written a book that will be out everywhere in September (it’s available for pre-sale now!), and their YouTube channel, Just Between Us, has 3/4 of a million subscribers. Killing it! Remember if you ever have a thought or a reaction to an episode and want to share, feel free to email howareyouthinkingabout@gmail.com. And as always, it’s a boost to the podcast if you leave an iTunes review.
