In today's podcast, we talk about precontemplation, and how to manage our clients and ourselves when they are not ready to change. Clients in precontemplation may not be thinking about changing their behaviour because they don't think they need to, or may not be considering change because it feels impossible.  Our current approaches may lead to frustration, conflict and the client feeling judged, pressured and misunderstood. We explore what we often do as health professionals when we are faced with a client who is pre-contemplative, and why these approaches may not be helpful. We also provide some suggestions for what we can do instead. No matter what happens in life, things will change. It's inevitable. Often times, things change without you having any control over it. When that happens, you have to be resilient, adapt, and move on.  But not all change is forced. Lots of change happens because people realize they have to make a change and can't continue things status quo. You've likely gone through the stages of change at some point in your own life too. As dietitians, your job is often to help people through the stages of change and to meet them where they're at. It's also important and helpful to be able to identify what stage of change someones at. This episode goes into the different stages of change. I incorporate some examples of each and stories to show what these stages of change look like when working with clients.  This is what you'll learn in this episode: What is meant by the stages of change How many stages there are and the characteristics in each stage of change How to determine the stage of change someone's at through examples Here's a glance at this episode: [06:10] The first stage of change - Precontemplation [06:52] The second stage of change - Contemplation [07:40] The third stage of change - Preparation [08:25] The fourth stage of change - Action  [09:25] The fifth stage of change - Maintenance [11:13] Some real life examples to help you identify the stage of change someone is at so you can help them move through the stages of change and achieve their goals. Why is it so hard to make sustaining change, especially in relationships? What are the Stages of Change? How can you provide yourself with tenderness if and when you find yourself struggling to change, ya dummy? Welcome to episode 72! In this episode, we will be answering: what is it going to take for you to make a change in your life? I will walk you through the 5 (ahem, 6) Stages of Change to help you understand why it is so hard to make changes, especially in your relationships. If you struggle to set boundaries, assert your needs, or make necessary changes to your relationships–this episode is a must-listen for you! After walking you through the Stages of Change, I then apply them to a past dating relationship to build your understanding. It was a painful relationship. It was painful to revisit. I hope that by seeing the Stages of Change in action, you will provide yourself with better compassion as you make changes in your life.  Helpful links: www.codependummy.com/toolsforhealing - check out The Confiding Codependummy for just $1 a day for the next month (it's $30 total).  www.codependummy.com - check out the Self-Validation Challenge for free! https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=RJ3PSNZ4AF7QC - help support the show via a one-time donation via secure Paypal link!  More deets on this week's episode: We start off with a serenade and check-in.  Next, I share some background on The Stages of Change: the Transtheoretical Model of Change which is the basis for developing effective interventions to promote health behavior change first published by Prochaska & DiClemente in 1983. It has 5 stages but we will include 6: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and the sixth is relapse. Relapse is not necessary but it often happens which is why it is included as the 6th stage.  Short breakdown: Precontemplation - it's in the word itself. Pre, as in before, contemplation. Nothing much is happening at this stage, however, data/observations/experiences are being collected. Contemplation - the action of looking thoughtfully at something FOR A LONG TIME, deep reflective thought. You've gone from 0 to awareness that a change is needed.  Preparation - in this stage, you are prepping yourself to take action sooner than later. You've recognized a need for change and now you are prepping internally and externally. Action! - in this stage, actions are taken to make change. It's observable, explicit, external behavior. Maintenance - you work to maintain whatever changes/actions you have made. This is all to prevent regression and/or relapse. Re lapse - or regression. In this stage, you revert to an earlier stage of change - contemplation, preparation, etc.  I then apply 6 stages to my past relationship with a homeless man.  Questions for you:  If you have a current struggle, toxic relationship, addiction, challenge in your life–where do you sense you are in the SOC? What experience can you look back on in your life to see your own process in going through the SOC? How can you practice tenderness towards yourself given where you currently are in the SOC in relation to your current struggle? What, if any, step can you take to move forward into the next stage? One step–one action–one call.  How can you practice compassion for others given where they are in their SOC journey? Is this a helpful lens to apply to your life? If so, do, if not, don't! The end! Peter and Todd talk about the elements/drivers of and change and behavioral modifications. We stack the ideas and discuss where we think we are on the continuum, and how we could do better. As an educator, Peter reflects where the topics found in the coursework intersect with school settings – and shares what he is learning with us all here. Definitions: Autonomy: The capacity to make an informed uncoerced decision. Mastery: Comprehensive knowledge or skill in a subject or accomplishment. Purpose (noun): The reason for which something is done or created, or for which something exists. Purpose (verb): To have as one intention or objective. Ambivalence: Having mixed feelings or contradictory ideas about something so. Related points: Fuel prices have been up in the last few weeks... strange behaviors sometimes ensue. Many of our listeners are helping others be better versions of themselves. Peter is on a nutritional education quest. The drivers of motivation are mastery, autonomy, and purpose. It's amazingly easy to see our own shortcomings. ‘Y'all' is a good replacement instead of using ‘you guys'. Sometimes you just need to reboot. Mental habit / action / tool examples: The five stages of change: Precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. To help support someone change, start with empathy through reflective listening. Adjust to resistance rather than opposing it directly. Surround yourself with people who you can trust, and who can trust you. Never be afraid to assert that you don't know something if you truly don't. If a situation is challenging, chances are there many opportunities within that struggle to be a better version of yourself. Quotes/quips: "Someone once wiser and smarter than me said everything moves at the speed of trust.” “I'm not certified anything, but I'm an expert in what I'm interested in.” “I know what I know, and I don't know what I don't know.” “I truly don't believe in bad days, just challenging moments within 24-hour periods.” Rando Mentions: Motivational Interviewing - Books by Stephen Rollnick | Stephen Rollnick The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: 30th Anniversary Edition: Covey, Stephen R.: 9781982137274: Amazon.com: Books George Carlin - Wikipedia --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/peter-driscoll/message

There are many phases of change we go through in life. Retirement is one of them. Changing for Good: A Revolutionary Six-Stage Program by John C. Norcross details the 6 stages of change. On today's show, we will be discussing the first 3 stages: pre-contemplation, contemplation, and preparation. These are the mental and emotional hurdles we must go through when we make a change. Learning about the way we transition is an important tool in navigating retirement. The pre-contemplation phase could also be called the denial stage. At this point, you probably don't even recognize there is an issue that needs to be addressed. We see this with couples a lot, one spouse wants to lock down on their retirement planning while the other doesn't see the financial problems that need to be focused on. Usually, spouses are on different phases of change and they must work as a team to make things happen.  After getting past pre-contemplation, we move on to contemplation. Here you understand there is a problem that needs to be looked into. Maybe you are spending too much on takeout or perhaps you are still supporting your adult children. In many cases, this can cause issues in your own retirement. You may not be ready to make adjustments, but you are thinking about the problem and that is leading you down the path of change. You are contemplating how these financial issues are affecting your future and your goals.  The last mental phase is the preparation phase. Now you fully understand that something needs to change. Do you want to retire early? At this stage, you are making a plan to accomplish this goal. You start saving more and structuring your plan to support early retirement. This can be an emotional part of the change, making small easy attainable goals can help keep you on track.  So how do you know where you are? Have you acknowledged a problem that needs to be addressed? Do you realize what needs to take place? It's important to ask yourself these questions and do some self-reflection. You'll want to be emotionally prepared to make the financial decisions you need to. If we want to see changes in our life, we must make changes within ourselves.    Listen to the full episode for more details or skip around to certain topics.  1:16 – A new tree 2:40 – First 3 stages of change 6:22 – Precontemplation 8:30 – Contemplation 10:06 – Preparation 11:46 – What can we ask ourselves? 16:12 – Can you do this? 17:50 – Will you do this? 21:33 – Where these stories go   For more, visit us online at http://flemingfinancialservices.com

For our book club, Amy, Jeff, Nick, and I have been reading Changing for Good by James Proshaska, John Norcross, and Carlo DiClemente. This book was first brought to my attention by one of my instructors at Kansas State, Dr. Megan Lurtz, who wrote an article about how to apply the book's teachings to the financial planning process. Our team found the book extremely useful. Not just for financial planning but because it provides a great framework for how to change habits and make progress in life. Whether you are trying to change financial habits or health habits, the authors break the steps of changing for good into six parts: Precontemplation: In this first stage, you aren't ready to change. Precontemplation is akin to denial, not accepting that a particular behavior is detrimental and needs to change. Contemplation: in this stage, we are considering making a change, weighing the pros and cons. Change has a cost: it often involves letting go of things we find comforting and part of our lifestyle. In the contemplation stage, we are evaluating the tradeoffs and moving our mindset toward acting. Preparation: At this point, our mind is made up that we need to act, and we lay the groundwork. Preparation may involve choosing a budget plan, joining a gym, or getting the junk food out of the house. Action: As the name implies, this is where we begin to work to change our behavior. Hitting the gym, tracking our spending, or forgoing cigarettes. The book offers many support mechanisms and tools to help institute and enforce the appropriate actions. Maintenance: Once we have achieved a change, we must maintain it to prevent backsliding. This is often the most difficult stage. Most of us have experienced losing weight or starting an exercise program. We reach some goals only to find a year later we're back where we started. As with the action step, the authors provide many strategies to help support behavioral change long–term. Termination: At the termination stage, behavior change has become so permanent that we no longer must worry about backsliding. This state may never be achieved, depending on the nature of the change we are trying to achieve. The key to understanding this framework is knowing that you can't expect to move from one stage to the next until you are ready to make that move. Many of us try to go from contemplation to action, skipping preparation.  First, we have to completely convince ourselves that we're ready to make a change. Most New Year's Resolutions fall into this category: we simply decide that we should behave differently and arbitrarily try to stop on the first day of the year. Usually, we make this decision without truly committing to the depth of change it requires. By mid-January, we're back where we started. We highly recommend this book for anyone looking to make behavioral changes, whether those changes are health-related or financial. The Transtheoretical Model was developed to help understand behavior and can be used in practice to promote compliance. In today’s episode, we discuss the stages of behavior change and offer useful tips on how to approach coaching and educating patients.   Today on The Lab Report: 2:00 The Transtheoretical Model 5:10 Precontemplation and recognition 9:40 Contemplation and acceptance 12:10 Preparation and planning 14:30 Action and health coaching 16:45 Maintenance and new behavior 17:30 Question of the Day: What are the critiques of the Transtheoretical Model?   Subscribe, Rate, & Review The Lab Report Thanks for tuning in to this week’s episode of The Lab Report, presented by Genova Diagnostics, with your hosts Michael Chapman and Patti Devers. This week we continue to discuss the precontemplation stage and how our "IT" keeps us in denial and fear, preventing us from looking at the possibility of change. We discuss some real-life struggles and how we often become our own worst enemy, holding us back from stepping outside our comfort zone.

Welcome to part one of a larger collection on The Transtheoretical Model (also called the Stages of Change Model), developed by Prochaska and DiClemente. This week we cover the first stage of change, the precontemplation phase. In this stage, people do not intend to take action in the foreseeable future (defined as within the next 6 months). People at this time are often unaware that their behavior is problematic or produces negative consequences.

Here we are with Real Recovery Talk! Let's find out what the five stages of change are and how you could be enabling your loved one to stay addicted to drugs and alcohol. Addicts can transfer from one stage to another daily. There are many different factors in the addict's life, which will play into what stage the addict is currently experiencing. This episode is not only for those who are addicted but for the loved ones, friends, and family who have a role in the addict's life. Stage #1: Precontemplation Stage The addict is clueless about their behavior, how their behavior affects others around them and is perplexed about why the people around them are responding to them in the manner in which they see. The addict does not even register that they have an issue and will usually give excuses about their behavior or think their behavior is in the normal range of socially acceptable behavior. Stage #2: Contemplation Stage The addicts look at their behavior and think their possibly could be a problem with their behavior. They may see room for change. However, they aren't ready to make that change at this stage. The addict can start to see a daily pattern in their addiction. The person isn't convinced they have a problem when they are going through this stage. Stage #3: Understanding the Problem For drug addicts and alcoholics to get to this stage can take multiple years of the same destructive behavior day after day to recognize that this behavior is a problem. They realize their tolerance to drugs, alcohol has increased, and their problem is affecting their work and family life. Poor habits such as not eating, not sleeping, or not bathing are regular daily choices. Health is on the decline, and they understand this behavior is negatively affecting them. At this stage, they know they have a problem and see the evidence of their behavior. Stage #4: Action Stage At this stage, the addict realizes they have an issue and start to make changes. They may realize they need to check themselves into treatment or start to attend a support group. At this point, the addict needs support, as this stage takes a large amount of willpower. The addict will start to understand the reason behind their addiction. Next, they can attend therapy to work through the healing process. For the family member, you now have the opportunity to learn about addiction and how to properly support your child or family member in their newfound recovery. Stage #5: Maintenance Stage Find support groups, mentors, and others who will positively support you and your family. This stage can last for years and does not have a specific stopping point in your life. You may find a therapist who you trust and rely on to help you through your healing journey. Listen in to find out why you need to draw boundaries around addicts and how boundaries can move the addict through to the fourth and fifth stages of recovery. Find out why it's so important to learn about addiction and why you should find others who are in a similar position to you to learn from them what to expect and how you can support your child or loved one. In this episode, my husband and I go over the 6 phases of behavior change via the Transtheoretical Model. The phases are: 1) Precontemplation - where people don't even know they need to make a behavior change yet 2) Contemplation - people are considering making a change 3) Preparation/determination - planning phases of making a behavior change 4) Action - freshly implementing a behavior change 5) Maintenance - holding steady on consistently performing a behavior change 6) Termination - people are never going back to the way they once behaved We also go over limitations of this model as well as personal awareness strategies to determine which phase of the model you fall into and how you can make your next step. We hope you learn something you can implement into your own life! Be more effective with others by identifying where they are in the change cycle. In this episode we talk about an old addictions concept, the Stages of Change by DiClemente and Prochaska, and apply it to many trouble spots in life. Stages of change model starts with Precontemplation and moves to Contemplation, Preparation, Action, Maintenance, Relapse….The idea here is recognize that a whole lot happens in the noggin well before you see any action to fix the problem behavior. We also discuss it from a 4-part perspective, which we call Process of Change Unconscious dysfunctional behavior – help the person have a reason to change, encourage exploration, leave door open for future conversations, don’t be controlling or aggressive here, talk about your needs not theirs Conscious dysfunctional behavior – ambivalent feelings usually present, help sort out pros and cons but don’t take just one side, encourage further exploration Conscious functional behavior – lot’s of support, no shame with failure, identify and assist problem solving of obstacles, small steps good, link with social support Unconscious functional behavior – keep practicing and it’ll move here, continue to get support and connect to values, cope w/ relapse, move from external motivation to internal   RESOURCES: Additional resources for this episode: Process of Change: PDF visual representation of Process of Change Prochaska JO, DiClemente CC, Norcross JC: In search of how people change.
