On the eating disorder recovery road, your motivation for change will ebb and flow. Sadly, it is not a beautifully linear journey with marked destination posts and defined milestones. Wouldn't it be wonderful if it was! Prochaska and DeClemente's Cycle of Change offers a model for explaining the precarious change road with its inevitable ambivalence and turbulence. The model is not only for eating disorder recovery but can be applied to a myriad of transformation processes. This episode dives into the Cycle of Change and also explores 7 ways to boost recovery motivation. I hope that you find it helpful. Zach Stone's life arc runs from teenage “knucklehead” to crisis negotiator, trauma-informed facilitator, and head-of-product for thirty health-ed dev teams. In this rich, funny, and occasionally hair-raising conversation we drill down into the how of navigating chaos — on a subway platform, in a corporate boardroom, and inside your own nervous system.Trigger warning: there's a conversation about suicide at about 15 minutes into the episode. Skip to minute 17 if you want to avoid this section. Here's a tasting menu of our conversation:Gang manuals & purple binders – How a Quaker-adjacent conflict resolution course turned a 15-year-old troublemaker into a group dynamics geek. From union hall to board hall – Lessons learned refereeing SEPTA labor fights and why the same “rubber-and-glue” listening works on Zoom stand-ups.OARS in rough water – Using Motivational Interviewing (Open questions, Affirmations, Reflections, Summaries) to defuse rage, whether from a bus driver or the voice in your own head.Simulated danger, real breakthroughs – How well-designed role-plays can heal trauma if you hold the container (and what happens when a participant suddenly starts to undress).Signs you're in a chaotic system – Chronic absenteeism, cortisol tummy, “my work doesn't matter” syndrome, and 70% burnout in tech.Habit > culture – A shout-out to Paul Gibbons, Prochaska & DiClemente, and the myth of top-down culture change.Martial arts as somatic therapy – TaeKwonDo to Muay Thai to boxing; what Zach saw when veterans laid down their canes and kids in shelters stopped fighting.Virtual heartbreak – Coaching a Kharkiv dev team while missiles shook their bomb shelter.Chaos surfing 101 – Why you don't control chaos, you ride it; plus simple team-level practices to build collective resilience.TakeawaysName the elephant first. Start every workshop by voicing the resistance in the room; it evaporates faster than you'd think.Watch for survival mode. Tight shoulders, skipped meals, rolling eyes? Slow down before you roll out another initiative.Move the meat-sack. Five minutes of mindful movement (shadow-boxing, Tai-Chi, hallway laps) resets the neuro-chemistry better than another latte.Change habits, not slogans. Knowing that relapse is common and even a part of the change process helps you move forward." - Ana Melikian, Ph.D. In this episode, the host, Ana Melikian, delves into the complexities of learning and change, especially how we can learn from our mistakes and missteps. Ana highlights an error she made on the show regarding the stages of change as conceptualized by psychologists Prochaska, Norcross, and DiClemente, and uses it as a teaching moment to underline the importance of embracing imperfection. Ana revisits the six stages of change: pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and recycling (learning from relapse), clarifying the sixth stage. She emphasizes that relapse is a natural part of change and can be a powerful learning opportunity. Through personal anecdotes and references to past episodes, Ana encourages listeners to build resilience to failure. She discusses the importance of seeing relapse as an inevitable part of the journey towards lasting change and urges everyone to keep pushing forward despite setbacks. Ana concludes with a call to action for listeners to reflect on how these concepts can be applied in their lives to foster personal growth and positive transformation. Let's dive in! On this month's podcast we spoke to Will Prochaska, Leader of the Coalition to End Gambling Ads and former Chief Executive of the charity Gambling with Lives. We discussed:* What the gambling world looks like.* The harms associated with gambling.* Why New Labour's liberalisation of gambling was "one of the worst things we did as a government" according to Alastair Campbell.* The many similarities in how the alcohol and gambling industries behave.* And the pros and cons of a levy on the gambling industry. On the podcast Mr Prochaska said:“The industry would like to present that only those people who are addicted are harmed. But actually, there are a whole host of lower level harms that aren't given the importance they deserve.”On Wednesday 27 November, after our podcast recording, the government announced that it will introduce a £5 per spin limit to online slots betting for adults 25 and older, and a £2 limit per bet for 18 to 24-year-olds. Gambling minister Baroness Fiona Twycross also said that the government would introduce “the first legally mandated” tax on the betting industry, which will be used to fund research, prevention, and treatment of gambling harm. On Twitter Mr Prochaska said:“Today's announcement of a statutory levy on gambling companies is a hard won step in the right direction, but it must mark the beginning of a full government review of gambling's place in society."

Discovery calls are a vital tool for making your practice stronger. In this episode Dr. Lara Salyer explores the power of discovery calls in healthcare, and shares how they can be a tool for connecting with potential patients, especially for a provider in a community where functional medicine is yet to gain ground. Dr. Salyer explains how aligning discovery calls with core values like education, transparency, autonomy, and efficiency can transform patient engagement. She uses her website as an example, showing how these values, integrated into pre-education materials, help potential patients grasp her approach even before they make the first call. The episode then guides listeners through a strategic sequence of questions based on the Prochaska model of behavior change, starting with identifying the patient's primary medical challenges and goals. Dr. Salyer highlights the significance of understanding past strategies that patients have found beneficial, offering insights into their readiness for change. Further, she probes into why patients believe a holistic medical approach suits them and why they think it's the right time for this shift. These questions aim to unearth the patients' motivations and readiness for embracing a new healthcare journey. The discussion also includes assessing patients' current prescription medications, providing a complete picture of their health status. One innovative concept introduced in this episode is the feedback survey for discovery calls that don't lead to patient conversions. Dr. Salyer emphasizes the value of understanding why a potential patient might say no, using this as an opportunity to refine the approach and address any barriers to conversion. This episode is packed with practical resources and advice for practitioners to enhance their discovery call techniques and boost patient conversion rates, grow your practice and amplify your reach. If you like this content and you want more information like this, explore Dr. Salyer's Streamline Course. Quotes: • “Even the thought of doing a discovery call prickles many healthcare practitioners because at our heart, we aren't salespeople. And we feel that health care is a right. Health care is a necessity. We just want to serve. So why would we want to get on a discovery call that just feels incongruent with our values?” (1:42 | Dr. Lara Salyer) • “You need to ask for and provide a feedback survey for those discovery calls that didn't convert. In fact, I recommend a lot of communication.” (10:57 | Dr. Lara Salyer) • “Read those feedback surveys when you're feeling in your wise mind and you're feeling stable. You're grounded and you can handle this because that will be the gold that you're searching for.” (13:20 | Dr. Lara Salyer) Links: Streamline Course: https://rightbrainrescue.com/p/streamline Connect with Lara: Website: https://drlarasalyer.com The Catalyst Way: https://drlarasalyer.com/catalyst Instagram: @drlarasalyer Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drlarasalyer Linked-In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drlarasalyer/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DrLaraSalyer TikTok: @Creativity.Doctor Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Two names, so many uses! Every health communicator needs to be familiar with this go-to framework for segmenting audiences by their readiness for behavior change: the Transtheoretical (AKA “Stages of Change”) Model. Designed to be combined with other theories and frameworks, it's the little black dress of health behavior theory: despite some limitations, it's often perfect for almost any occasion.Resources:Image of the Transtheoretical (Stages of Change) ModelThe original Prochaska & DiClemente article: Prochaska, James & Diclemente, Carlo. First 5 minutes: Intro- Inaction doesn't work in recovery. You have to have Action. You have to do something healthy or it leaves a vacuum that will possibly be filled with the wrong things. Now that we've acknowledged how hard it is for someone to just stop an excessive habit, let's discuss what the process of addiction looks like. There are two researchers, Prochaska and DiClemente, who came up with a framework for the process. The first stage of the process is Pre-contemplation. A quick disclaimer that we are coming from the understanding that we are talking to both people at the same time. An individual conversation with an ‘addict' or an individual conversation with the loved one of an ‘addict' will look different based on their level of awareness of their own process. Minutes 5-10: The 6 stages are: Pre-contemplation. Contemplation. Preparation. Action. Maintenance. Relapse. Both sides of the relationship could be in one of these stages- in other words, the partner to the ‘addict' could be in contemplation or preparation stage, trying to get traction, but the person with the dependence might not even realize it. You don't really know there is a problem, until you try something and it's harder to change than you though it would be. An example is the food and health issues that Chad and Angela are adjusting. We wouldn't have been able to acknowledge that there was a problem, expect that we have tried to change things and failed multiple times. Minutes 10-15: Some problems are visible on the outside. Being overweight or getting a DWI makes a problem more obvious. Sometimes you can recognize you need to change and you can put yourself in the Preparation and Action stages. Other times something happens that makes you change and you are forced into an action step. Before you can change, you have to have a plan. Preparation is an important part of the process of recovery. Once you have a plan, you have to move to the Action stage. Action is not Maintenance. In the Action stage you can't be caught up with results, it is only designed to start changing things. Minutes 15-20: Once there has been consistency in the Action Stage, there can be goals set for maintenance. There is a distinction between Action and Inaction. Recovery is more than just not doing something. There must be doing. Within the Action Stage there is another cycle that shows up. Could be triggered by a life stressors or some other trigger that pushes a person back into their habit. When they relapse, the cycle looks like this: There is shame and guilt for using again once they had committed to stop. There is repentance and regret which leads to swearing off the habit again. The person ‘sobers' up and stops for a while and can have some time in success… until another trigger hits and then it starts over again. Minutes 20-25: Inaction does not work in recovery. It's not only about NOT doing the behavior or substance. Recovery requires ACTION steps. Doing healthy things that respond to the underlying pain. Connect Point: Take a few minutes and instead of identifying things you don't want to do (inaction), consider a few things that you could do that would be healthy or beneficial to you. Episode Description: In today's episode of the podcast, Marchelle and I talk about the 5 Stages of Change that were elucidated by a research team named Prochaska and DiClemente. Understanding these stages is important, not just for you, but for other people in your life.... how often have you told a family member or a friend about your weight loss journey and they just shrugged and said "Whatever...."? After listening to this podcast, you'll understand why!! We also talk about the very important 6th Stage of Change that Prochaska and DiClemente added years later, and what that means for you in your weight loss journey! Episode Highlights: 05:09 When you get into Empowered Weight Loss and you learn the skills that it takes to not just lose the weight, but really keep it off, you are a participant in your life again. And that's good, not just for you but that's good for everybody who loves you too. 20:33 What I want everyone listening to know is that this is completely normal when your brain is under stress. Any new behavior will fall by the wayside while your brain attends to making sure that you survive because when stressful things happen, as far as your brain is concerned it's that fight, flight response. And it's basically, it's a normal survival instinct. 22:40 So everyone listening to this podcast, ask yourself, where are you in this process? What stage are you at? I think we can pretty much assume that you're not in the pre-contemplation stage, or you would not be interested in listening to this at all. Show Notes, Episode 23: Testing Coordination with Carrie Prochaska About this show:April showers bring May flowers and May flowers bring…. Testing in schools! Many of the assistant principals I work with also serve double duty as test coordinators. It is a challenging job, but today's show should contain some tips that make the job a bit easier. Notable Quotes Carrie Prochaska“I think it is super important that we are positive and supportive. We know how everyone feels about testing and we don't make the rules, but we have to play by them.” “Don't try to reinvent the wheel. A lot of the processes we do, work for every test” “Stay organized and don't wait until the last minute to prepare” “Plan time during your workday that is going to be devoted to preparation, where you are not interrupted” “Give yourself some grace on testing days” “There is a purpose for this. We aren't just testing these kids to death for no reasons. We use our state test scores to really delve into school wide strengths and weaknesses, grade level strengths and weaknesses, teacher grades and weaknesses, we use them to set our goals for the schools, teachers, and grade levels.” “I can't think of anything that can't be fixed” Frederick“When we talk about prioritizing purpose over urgency, we are also talking about systems, because without good systems we are trapped on the treadmill of the urgent. Systems allow us to work more quickly and with greater accuracy” “So many of us are used to multi-tasking and thinking we can multi-task. Multi-tasking erodes your ability to work effectively. If you can talk to your principle and close your door for an hour, hour and a half, you're going to get three hours of work done.” “Test coordination is one way that we leverage our skills to help the school” Links:Carrie's email: cprochas@greenville.k12.sc.usMy email: frederick@frederickbuskey.com The Assistant Principal Podcast website: https://www.frederickbuskey.com/appodcast.html Sign up for the daily leadership email: https://mailchi.mp/c15c68e6df32/specialedition Website: www.frederickbuskey.comBlog: www.frederickbuskey.com/blog (reposts of the daily email)
In therapy, we talk about Prochaska's stages of change model. Most of the folks that we work with around sexuality, particularly those who have a religious background, start in either the precontemplative or contemplative stages of change. Not because they don't want to be further down the road, but because the systems they grew up in (read: most church communities) place limitations around sexuality, such as “no sex before marriage” or “no sex with someone of the same sex/gender, keep folks in these early stages. The preparation and action stages of change are only reserved for people who are married, and even then, healthy sexuality often takes years of development, overcoming anxiety, and unlearning unhelpful messages around bodies and sex. If you're single or queer, many religious circles expect you to stay in the precontemplative/contemplative stages of change, meaning coming out as a sexual person (queer or otherwise) has to happen outside of the church walls. Sexvangelicals is a podcast that tells the stories of folks who start at a precontemplative stage about sexuality, either because of a neutral/negative view of sexuality, i.e. a lack of sex education, or a negative or restrictive view of sexuality, such as purity culture, and follows them along the stage of change journey. Some folks operate explicitly in the action/maintenance phase, while other folks have parts of them that are in the contemplative or preparation stage. Wherever you are on this journey, this podcast is for you! On this episode, we take a sneak peek into the action stage of change with our friend Rachel Maine, host of the podcast Owning Your Sexual Self. Rachel's journey started over 9 years ago after a break up that forced her to start choosing herself. This journey lead her to start a business involving sexual education which lead to going back to school for a certificate in sex therapy and sexuality education. In a nutshell, Rachel helps women and couples discover their sexual desires and create intimate, adventurous connections with their partners. She runs a business with Pure Romance and is the CEO of her online sex coaching business. Rachel talks with us about: The importance of using anatomically accurate language (6:30): “There's power behind using anatomically correct terms,” Rachel states. Describing our genitals as penis, vulva, vagina (and knowing the difference between the two), rather than dick, pussy, thingy, or any other fake names, “can help break down the taboo around sex and pleasure.” Starting with sex positivity, rather than starting with sex negativity and moving into sex positivity (20:00): The therapeutic process typically starts with a problem. In the sex therapy world, it's often around sexual desires not aligning, sexual pain, or challenges and anxieties with erections. Rachel hosts parties for women where she starts with describing how to use sex toys and other variations of sexual experimentation, then works backwards, if necessary, to explore the unhelpful narratives around sexuality that folks might have. “It's validation for women. You hear this woman tell you that you're normal, that this is common, and here's how we might be able to fix this. It's important to recognize that you're not alone,” Rachel says. Sexual confidence (27:00): How do you know that you're in a sexually confident place? Rachel describes, “Expanding my horizon when it came to sexual pleasure. I took the time to prioritize myself. When you can start with the most intimate part of your life, you're pretty much guaranteed to see that flow into other parts of your life.” Julia reflects back: “Women have a narrative that “fine” is good enough. I love that you're encouraging folks to not settle in your sexuality.” Navigating between accepting what needs to be accepted and simultaneously not settling (29:30): We talk about two competing perspectives on sexuality: the model where you strive for mind-blowing sex at the expense of settling and the “good enough” sex model, where we also acknowledge the limitations of our bodies and psyches and accept our partners where we are. Jeremiah asks about a both/and approach, to which Rachel introduces the Want/Will/Won't List. She encourages folks to highlight what they want to do and won't do, and then to name sexual activities that they will do (but may not have the highest desire to do), with a mindset that pleasure might come in surprising ways through these activities. She then encourages couples to write these items on a sheet of paper, put them in a jar, draw one of the items, and do what's on the sheet of paper. She adds, “Remember, your desires are going to be changing. So to have the same sex all the time, you're likely to get bored.” Being in control of your own choices (40:00): Rachel's ultimate goals are for people to choose themselves first. She talks about how this starts with decisions that you make in the morning, such as writing or meditating or eating breakfast. She also encourages people to set time aside for self touch, and acknowledges that creating space for masturbation sets people up to create intentional living in a wide variety of domains. Wherever you are on your sexual journey, we hope this episode is informative and inspiring! Let's heal together!
Today Ellen and Denise interviewed Judith Smith, the author of a new book called: Difficult: Mothering Challenging Adult Children through Conflict and Change.Judith is a leader in gerontological research focusing on women's experiences as they age. She is a senior clinical social worker, therapist, and professor at Fordham University. She lives in New York City.Difficult focuses on adult children and takes the unique perspective of the mother. I struggled reading this book and felt such compassion for these mothers and the sacrifices they made. Judith wrote the book because she discovered that there was very little written about parenting adult children and in particular for these mothers who were saddled with very difficult situations. Judith is writing about a particular set of mothers. Mothers truly who have difficult adult children. She talks about her hope that using the words, "difficult adult child" will help others understand and be supportive. She says that 80 percent of all children are being raised in a single family home and the person carrying most of the weight is the mother. That is changing, but not by much. Societal problems are also contributing to this issue. A broken mental health system. Not enough psychiatric beds, we do not have sufficient substance abuse care that is affordable and accessible. The homeless problem is connected to the mental health. Also fascinating is what she learned during this research about elder abuse. The most likely perpetrator is the adult child who is mentally ill or has a substance abuse problem and is living at home. She offers some great advice on how to help mothers struggling with difficult adult children and the small steps mothers can use to help themselves and be heard. There are no magical answers but she pushed herself to think about this and offers some tools both on the episode and in the book.Judith urges listeners to stay in touch by emailing her at judithsmith@difficultmothering.com and check out her website at difficultmothering.com.Here final hope is that this book will help these mothers not feel alone. Together they founded their company Pro-Change Behavior Systems, which they sold in 2015. In 2016 they published, Changing to Thrive. Our conversation focused on the book as it applies to the top threats to your overall health and happiness. The book focuses on the five areas recognized by health professionals as the key to chronic diseases: Overeating/unhealthy diet, smoking, drinking alcohol and lack of exercise, and overarching above all of those is stress. "Changing behaviors is easier said than done. If you're like most of us, you have already made repeated attempts to change your lifestyle and improve your well-being without lasting success. You may attribute those failures to things like lack of motivation or the “wrong genes.” But it's more likely that you simply don't know how to change. In this groundbreaking book, James O. WBSRocks: Business Growth with ERP and Digital Transformation
There is always so much at stake with ERP implementations. One plus one is perhaps eleven when it comes to deploying ERP. They are never just technology deployment. The companies that promise the world to their teams based on the overstated claims from technology sales professionals might encounter varied emotional responses from their leaders, leading to a compliance culture. This culture often produces the exact opposite effect of what you intended to achieve with your technology. In today's episode, we have our guest Amanda Prochaska, who discusses how to prepare for change with large transformation projects and why a continuous monitoring of emotional response is absolutely critical for the success of such projects. She also shares several stories related to emotional response and what she did to get these projects back on track and to bring positivity to the culture. Finally, she talks about what leaders need to do to identify the underlying symptoms of compliance culture and how to engage with vendors hired to help you manage this change. For more information on growth strategies for SMBs using ERP and digital transformation, visit our community at wbs.rocks or elevatiq.com.
