Inflammation is your body's way of protecting itself from infection, injury, or other insults. Chemical signaling molecules called ‘eicosanoids' are responsible for creating pain, heat, swelling, and redness. Eicosanoids are made from fatty acids, or dietary fats. We've all heard of fish oil and omega-3s being important when it comes to lowering inflammation. But why? In today's episode, we break down the inflammatory cascade, explain how fatty acids are involved, and we answer the question ‘What in the world is an eicosanoid!?' Vitamins D & K2 : The Key to Unlocking Strong Bones

The Lab Report

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 8, 2025 26:52

If you are worried about keeping your bones strong, there’s more to the story than taking calcium supplements. Vitamin D and vitamin K work together to support strong, healthy bones. Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium from food, which is essential for building and maintaining bone density. But without enough vitamin K—particularly vitamin K2—that calcium might not end up where it's needed. Vitamin K2 activates proteins that help direct calcium into bones and teeth while keeping it out of soft tissues like arteries. In other words, vitamin D gets the calcium in, and vitamin K makes sure it goes to the right place. In today’s episode, we discuss the important relationship between vitamin D and vitamin K. These 2 fat-soluble vitamins collaborate to support bone density – there’s more to bone health than calcium! Mast cells are responsible for storing important chemical mediators like histamine and others which help to instigate allergic responses. Mast cell disorders arise when there are too many mast cells, or they become hyperreactive. That being said, these conditions are often misunderstood, and diagnoses are sometimes misused.  In today's episode, we focus on the role of mast cells and histamine in the immune response. Ok, well…. Today's episode is a bit unique…. The intention was to discuss the important benefits of a trace mineral called boron. It is an important mineral, make no mistake. But, as we started recording, we got bored. Turns out talking about boron is kind of boring! So, we do hit the boron highlights, but then, in typical Patti & Michael fashion, we veer off into debate and discussion. The topic became the danger of misinformation by health influencers and how to remain skeptical. Today on The Lab Report: 3:10 Thirty seconds on boron 4:35 A dose of skepticism toward health influencers 7:55 Health information changing tides   11:20 Methylation SNPs and reductionism 15:30 GLP-1 agonists and total body systems 21:30 Wrap up – always be curious and skeptical   Additional Resources: Genova Connect   **PROMO CODE TheLabReport20 for 20% off your purchase**   Subscribe, Rate, & Review The Lab Report Thanks for tuning in to this week's episode of The Lab Report, presented by Genova Diagnostics, with your hosts Michael Chapman and Patti Devers. Genova's Endo+ Profile is the first of its kind in hormonal health, offering the unique ability to test saliva, blood, and urine simultaneously. This flexibility lets providers create tailored hormonal profiles that reveal insights and connections between sex hormones, thyroid function, adrenal health, melatonin rhythms, and estrogen metabolism. While creating this product, we spent years scouring the research for the most up-to-date clinical information. Some of what we found, or more importantly didn't find, calls into question what gets repeated in the echo chambers of functional medicine. Today is part 3 of our series where we challenge common doctrine in hormone testing. Foods come in and out of favor all the time. Eggs are good for you… no wait, they are bad… nope, good again – let's not even discuss butter! There are many disease correlations related to specific foods and literature continues to evolve. One such focus is on red meat and its correlation to cardiovascular disease.  But why? Is all red meat bad? Can you eat red meat and not increase heart disease risk? What about it should cause concern? Interestingly, the answer lies in the microbiome's ability to metabolize the carnitine in red meat into a metabolite called trimethylamine (TMA). What happens from there is the key!  But be warned, there is more to TMA than red meat and carnitine. Today we discuss TMA and how it becomes a cardiovascular risk factor (TMAO). We tell you about TMA's many sources - besides red meat - and why you should care. Today on The Lab Report: 2:10 Food controversies 3:50 Break it Down: Trimethylamine (TMA) and trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) 6:40 TMAO, carnitine, and choline 10:00 Wait, which foods are actually the problem? 13:50 Red meat, TMAO, and cardiovascular risk 18:40 Dietary microbiome changes 20:05 Question of the Day: Which Genova profiles can help?
