JR VERSUS STINKY DUMPING GROUND Twelve-year-old JR is convinced the toxic dump next door killed his sister—and no one will listen. If JR fails, the danger won't stop with his family—it could destroy the entire neighborhood. The adults say he is wrong. They say keep quiet. They say let them handle it. But JR has watched them do nothing for years. So, he is taking matters into his own hands. With help from his friends, a school project that becomes an investigation, and a heart that refuses to give up, JR sets out on a mission to expose the truth. Fueled by courage, determination, and a heart that refuses to give up, JR sets out on a mission that seems impossible: “Stinky Dumping Ground has got to go!” But can one kid really take on something so big? Can kids make a difference and get environmental justice? JR Versus Stinky Dumping Ground is about community activism inspired by kids. An enjoyable read for adults. A must-read for kids. TOPICS OF CONVERSATION More than an environmental mystery. A funny, sharp 12-year-old takes on an illegal dump in Brooklyn, but the real story is about grief, family, and finding your voice. Rooted in personal loss. Rawle lost his younger sister at age 12, the same age as JR. That experience shaped the book's emotional core. Community matters. Inspired by a Spike Lee vibe, the Brooklyn neighborhood is full of characters who argue, support, and show up for each other when it counts. No perfect victories. JR doesn't get everything he wants, and that's intentional. The book respects young readers enough to keep the ending honest. A series with a twist. Future books will feature different kids with the initials J.R. in different communities, each tackling environmental issues. Three more drafts are already in progress. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ellis Brown grew up surrounded by stories, the kind his uncles told with flair and detail, the kind that stick with you. Now he tells his own. A debut novelist and children's book author, Brown writes across genres with a consistent thread: characters navigating big stakes, real-world issues, and the complicated question of who the heroes really are. By day, Brown works as a Business Advisor at the Pace University Small Business Development Center, where he has spent two decades helping entrepreneurs turn ideas into reality, not unlike what he does on the page. Owned-media expert Matthew Rawle goes into the error of thinking you need large numbers to make a newsletter work, how much to talk about the technical details of the problem you solve vs. how much to show pictures of your dog, and how to make a newsletter work if you are a corporate employee.

On this week's episode we discuss The Compound by Aisling Rawle which follows our FMC Lily's journey on a dystopian style Love Island. The overall concept of this book was incredibly unique and interesting, but we both felt like it lacked depth and took some issues with the storytelling.
Aisling Rawle's The Compound explores reality television as a kind of dystopia. In the novel, a group of men and women live on a compound in the middle of a desert, where they participate in house competitions and vie for personal awards. In today's episode, Rawle joins NPR's Pien Huang for a conversation that touches on binge-watching Love Island as research, how the author came up with The Compound's rules and rewards, and how her characters perceive their own desirability. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

In this episode, Matt Rawle discusses his groundbreaking new book, "Faith Over Fear: Abraham's Imperfect Journey," offering a fresh perspective on the biblical figure of Abraham. Forget the idealized image – Matt argues that Abraham's story is far more complex and, at times, problematic. He unpacks instances where Abraham's actions, such as including Lot as a "backup plan" and his shocking decision to have Sarah pose as his sister to Pharaoh, actively endangered God's covenant. This insightful conversation emphasizes the humanity and fallibility of even the most revered biblical characters, illustrating God's incredible patience and unwavering plan. Matt also shares a fascinating observation: could Abraham have kept God's promise a secret from Sarah, potentially creating significant tension in their marriage? Tune in for a thought-provoking exploration of faith, flaws, and the enduring grace of God.Connect with the Bearded Theologians at https://www.linktr.ee/BeardedtheologiansFind all of Matt Rawle's books here: https://www.abingdonpress.com/matt_rawleYou can find the Beardcast on Youtube, Stitcher, Apple, Spotify, Castbox, or wherever else you listen to Podcast.
Let's Talk About Anxiety (Maddie Russo and Matt Rawle) by Matt Rawle
This Lent, ponder the themes of justice, poverty, freedom, and love. The four New Testament Gospels aren't the same story, but they offer the same Resurrection hope. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John devote most of their story detailing Jesus' last week in Jerusalem, all highlighting Jesus' triumphant entry into the city, the suffering and humiliation of the cross, and the empty tomb come Sunday morning, but the stories they tell aren't quite the same. Each Gospel offers a different lens through which we understand Jesus' Passion. One portrait reveals Jesus to be in control, while another emphasizes his suffering. In one story Jesus offers hope to the thief on the cross, and in another Jesus only receives derision. These different perspectives aren't a reason to dismiss the Gospels; rather they reveal an abundant, diverse, and complementary picture of God's work in the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Rev. Matt Rawle (www.mattrawle.com) came on the Beardcast to talk about latest book The Final Days. Matt talked about his book. You can pick it up by going to Matt's website. They discussed the unique perspectives of Jesus in the Gospels. They emphasized the importance of understanding the context and nuance of the Bible. They also played a game. Rawle had to guess if the quotes were from the Song of Solomon or a raunchy romance novel. Rawle got 5 out 5 correctly They ended the show by jokingly creating a graphic novel adaptation of the Song of Solomon. They engage with the challenges that all leaders face, especially clergy and lay leaders in the church, and how none of us are immune to the loneliness epidemic in our culture. Heartfelt and real, this episode is a call to all of us to take care of our friendships because they are core to who we are and our well-being. We hope you'll listen and then share it with all your friends!Quotations "The people around us are better because of the way that we've challenged each other."-Matt Rawle"I don't know how often I find myself in a group of people who, at one moment or another, there's a confession time that says, 'I ain't got anybody... I don't have friends.'"-Rachel Billups We discuss: The need for affirmation and cheerleading in friendships, as well as the importance of being able to challenge and give honest feedback. As we close out April, a best of conversation from Mother's Day 2022. Can we ever get enough nurturing energy in the world? Enjoy! David Rawle is the founder and force (with contribution and support from his wife, Carol Perkins, and a wide variety of community members in Charleston, SC), behind Theodora Park, a public park in Charleston - designed and cared for (with financial and care planning for the long haul) in a way that is reminiscent of the very best of private gardens: it is open, it is both lively and tranquil, it is filled with beautiful seasonal (native and non-native) plants, it offers places to sit, to play, to splash as well as to gather; it offers artful views representative of and inviting for the entire community - residents and visitors alike - human and more-than-human alike. Theodora Park was opened in 2015 and is dedicated to the memory ofDavid's mother - Theodora. Happy Mother's Day to all mothering souls and spaces - may all of our gardens, public and private, be welcoming, nurturing – shall we say mothering - places for all. Listen in! Whether you've been a Christian your whole life because you were raised in the faith, or you're just curious about what Christianity is all about, there are many ways we can come to know God, sometimes when we're not even looking for Him. In the Bible, the prophet Isaiah tells us in Romans 10:20 that “[God] is found by those who did not seek [Him], [He] became manifest to those who did not ask for [Him].” As we all enjoy our favorite stories of Christmas this year, and as Christians celebrate the birth of Christ, everyone can pause and reflect on the ways God might show up in our lives and look forward to new ways we might uncover His goodness in the coming year as well. Actress Danica McKellar always felt a tug at her heart that there was something out there she hadn't quite uncovered yet. Not long ago, when her friend and fellow actress Candace Cameron Bure sent her a Bible, the switch flipped and she came to the realization that it had been God tugging at her heart all along. Now, she's embarked on a new-found journey of faith and is eagerly anticipating this Christmas season with a new lease on life. Author and pastor Matt Rawle loves digging deep into our culture to find traces of God in places we'd least expect. He's uncovered themes in beloved Christmas classics like The Grinch and has found joy and a new understanding of God and the way He presents Himself in the world. And that is precious to me. And it's a journey of discovery.” - Danica McKellar “I can let go and let God. I can find that peace that surpasses understanding, because I know it doesn't matter what's going on in this world now that I have this connection to True Peace." - Danica McKellar "You know that childhood joy when you see how excited they are for Christmas? This year there's a whole new layer for me. It's the actual meaning behind the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ." - Danica McKellar “We don't always use culture beneficially, but culture in and of itself certainly isn't bad, but it can, I think, powerfully communicate to us who God is." - Matt Rawle “If we believe The Incarnation [of God in the form of Jesus] to be true, then culture is a vehicle through which we can discern God…Scripture says that God created all things through Christ and God was pleased to reconcile all things through Christ. Therefore, there is a hint of God in everything.” - Matt Rawle “Jesus taught using pop cultural references of the time. Of course, we're 2,000 years removed from that, so they don't seem to be so popular in terms of pop culture today. But in Jesus's time, they absolutely were.” - Matt Rawle “Christmas in particular is a great time to explore that intersection between culture and our shared lives together in spreading the gospel.” - Matt Rawle ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel!
