Andrea Breanna's life's work has been on building high traffic websites and is the straight talking founder of RebelMouse that has built two of the most important new media companies of this decade. It also powers content hubs and media properties for brands, like United Airlines, BlackRock, Flonase and many more. Before that, she was CTO of HuffingtonPost, where she led product, design and engineering. In today's interview with Ryan she discusses both of these and much, much more. KEY TAKEAWAYS Due to the rise and reliability of remote technologies, the physical office has less importance. Face to face still plays a key part, especially in sales, but for the day today running, you have the whole world to recruit from. As far as the customer experience goes, for a high percentage of companies the website will be the first point of contact and so many companies still fail to see the potential even now. Creating an ever evolving and positive user experience can guarantee return visits. There's always the temptation to continue to burn money in VC funded companies because of the nature of the model. Moving away from that and switching to a more sustainable model may seem painful, but in the long run it can enhance your business. For a company, your sales team is the most important part of the company and as such can also be the most expensive if they're not completely on brand and aligned with your mission. BEST MOMENTS ‘We're globally distributed. There are eighty-seven of us actually and we're in thirty-one countries. ' ‘Consumers don't have empathy for a bad website.” ‘Now, a year and a half after announcing core web vitals, very few sites are getting a good grade. Most of them are getting absolute failures and that type of thing is what we keep all of our clients monitored on so it's not like each client has to worry about that, the platform worries about those things.' ‘What you're told is to learn to burn money.' Today on the Alt Goes Mainstream podcast we have Web3's wizard with words. Jarrod Dicker, Partner at TCG, where he focuses on crypto investments that are enabling the consumerization of crypto.Jarrod is an expert at the intersection of crypto / NFTs and the media world. He was both an entrepreneur and investor in the media world prior to joining TCG.We had a fascinating discussion about the transition to the Web3 world. We covered: Whether or not everyone is now an investor and everything is now investable. How social credentialism and the idea of time as an investment – is key to Web3. We ended the podcast with some of Jarrod's famed Web2 // Web3 tweets because he truly is a wizard with words and is a translator for the world of Web3. There are few people in the crypto space whose content I enjoy reading than Jarrod's. His Tweets and writing (on Mirror.xyz, where he's an investor) are incredibly prescient and speaks to his knowledge of the crypto space. He joined TCG, the famed consumer investor (Twitter, Barstool, Crunchyroll, Hodinkee, Headspace, Dapper Labs), to invest into companies and protocols that create the onramps for consumers to the cryptoeconomy. They've invested in the likes of Zed Run and Dapper and Jarrod's thought leadership and experience in the media and content worlds should help them continue to access the best.Prior to TCG Crypto, he was the CEO of Po.et, a decentralized media tech company, where he was a pioneer in bringing blockchain to the media and advertising space. He formerly led innovation at The Washington Post, where he was responsible for building out their research, experimentation, and development team and running all of their innovation / commercialization efforts as VP of Commercial. He also held similar roles at RebelMouse, Time, and HuffPo. Jarrod is one of the most thoughtful thinkers on how Web3 will change content, content creation, and creators relationships with their community.I'm excited to see how he builds out TCG and the types of investments they make into the infrastructure building out Web3 so that crypto truly goes mainstream. Thanks Jarrod for coming on the Alt Goes Mainstream podcast.
Andrea Breanna is the Founder and CEO of RebelMouse, a content platform and creative agency that reaches 100 million people on a monthly basis. RebelMouse has helped launch some of the most impactful media companies from the past decade, including The Dodo and Axios. Before founding RebelMouse, Andrea was the CTO of HuffPost (formerly The Huffington Post), where she led the design, product, and engineering teams. Andrea is proudly transgender and in 2017 founded Fluidity.Love, a company incubated at RebelMouse that is on a mission to help the world understand gender fluidity. In this episode… There is seemingly no shortage of content on the internet. These days, thousands of businesses and publications vie for increasingly shortened attention spans. So, if your content is going to stand out from the crowd, it needs to be remarkable, relevant, and perfectly designed. The difficult part is knowing where to start. Andrea Breanna worked as the CTO of HuffPost, where she learned how to create memorable content that attracts millions of visitors. She's carried this expertise over to her content platform and creative agency, RebelMouse, which specializes in using creative technology to build new and innovative media companies. Andrea has learned firsthand what the ingredients to successful content are — and she's here to share them with you. Jarrod Dicker is currently the commercial chief at the Washington Post. There, he oversees the business of The Post across advertising, subscriptions and R&D as well as new ventures (like WaPo’s Zeus, which we discuss in-depth during this interview) and is a former CEO/founder in the crypto space (po.et). Prior to his days at the Post, he ran product, engineering and business teams at RebelMouse, The Huffington Post and Time Inc.Before his current media role, he started his career as a music journalist and photographer, amassing over 100 interviews with musicians/bands/artists. When he’s not doing everything I just shared, he writes on the creator economy and the application of it for independents and existing media companies.WARNING: If you’re expecting a “professional” (aka boring) chat about media and the creator economy, you’re going to be disappointed with this one. Jarrod and I go DEEP on newsletters, Substack (duh), how journalists are the new rock stars and how THAT makes newspapers the new record labels. We also talk about the media landscape in 2021 and beyond, why all journalists should learn the business side of media and I reveal why I have 0% interest of partnering this newsletter with a legacy media brand (Not gonna lie, this might be the take that kills the remaining dreams I had of ever getting a fawning profile in the NYT, lol).If you’re a media operator, publisher, writer, editor, advertising person, suit, C-suite person looking to get more in tune or you’re just someone who is really really really nerdy about this stuff, today’s episode is for you.

One of the most important skills a local small business owner must master is that of capturing and holding the attention of their ideal customer. That topic is the subject of the book Captivology by Ben Parr, which won a 2016 Small Business Book Award in the category of marketing from Small Business Trends magazine. Ben is a widely acclaimed tech journalist who has advised many well-known brands including Lufthansa, Rebelmouse, and AngelHack. He has served as the Co-Editor and Editor-at-Large of Mashable and has been named one of the Forbes 30 Under 30. In his book, Ben defines three types of attention that marketers must be aware of and take into account–immediate attention, short attention, and long attention. He also identifies seven “triggers” that we can use to capture these types of attention. In my interview with Ben, we discuss how a local business owner can use these seven triggers to make their marketing more effective.

Paul Berry is one of those guys I always want to get to hang out with but it's unlikely we get the chance unless we end up on the same team somewhere. His history in development and positioning is not too unlike mine. Odd since I apparently am old and he much younger. In 1995 Paul was Project Manager/Developer at Know-ware consulting for companies such as DeutscheBanc and Morgan Stanley. Honing his skills there he soon moved on to Palo Alto Software ... read more Entering the new millennium moved Paul to Related Capital as VP, Charter Mac as CTO and the Huffington Post as CTO and currently he serves on the Digital Advisory Board for American Express's Open and as founder at SoHo Tech Lab. But what we want to talk with Paul about today is his current status as founder and CEO at RebelMouse. I'm not going to tell you about RebelMouse here. But I will tell you, like everything else, it may take you a few minutes to "get it". I'm "getting it" and I'm pretty sure you will, too. The best news is we have THE Rebel Mouse on the air, live, answering questions about RebelMouse to help us get it and get it right. Join us live at noon eastern on July 10 at Social Media Edge Radio.
Paul Berry was the CTO of Huffington Post from April 2007 through December 2011. He is currently the founder and CEO of RebelMouse, a social media startup, and Soho Tech Lab, an incubator.
