When I was in college, a million years ago, I worked at the student radio station. There were some cool people there that turned me onto all sorts of new music. I had cassette tapes of several of the albums they introduced me to and I played them for years. I can't remember to put my garbage out on time but I can still picture the handwritten spines of cassette cases for albums like David Sylvian - Gone To Earth and Tangerine Dream - Hyperborea. A few of my prized cassettes were from more obscure artists such as the 3 that start this mix - Clara Mondshine, Baffo Banfi, and Bernard Szajner. After listening to these albums recently, I decided to make an entire mix of artists from that cassette era. The result is a nostalgic trip back to the late 70s and early 80s for some electronic goodness. The tracks range from more obscure artists like Lilienthal, Clara Mondshine, Baffo Banfi, and Bernard Szajner to more well known like Phil Mazanera & Richard Pinhas to the very well known Jean Michel Jarre & Al Di Meola. This collection takes me back to a specific time and works well as a cohesive mix. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I did. Cheers!

Seven years ago I did a mix called "Space Rock" that is unique in the Low Light Mixes catalog. It's a collection of instrumental tunes that are guitar driven and are a bit spacey, a little prog rock, and with some post-rock tossed in as well. You can find to original mix here: http://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2015/04/space-rock.html I've always wanted to do a follow-up mix but never got around to until now. So here is "Fractal Panorama - Guitar Space Rock". It's a set of new and old instrumentals with the same vibe as the first mix. I was happy to have dug up some really old cuts from 1972, '73 & '74. I was especially psyched to have stumbled on the Richard Pinhas homage to Robert Fripp with the track "In the Wake of King Fripp" from 1974. But my favorite cut in the mix is "Slowburn" by Sonar With David Torn. It's got this great, slightly menacing vibe to it. Cheers! Episode 47 The French Love Their Synthesizers Playlist Roger Roger (Cecil Leuter), “Duetto (La Concierge Et Le Monsieur Du Premier)” and “Rondeau Cucu” from Musique Idiote (1970 Neuilly). In this week's episode, Mark and Jasper are joined by the fabulous Vicki Wickham to chat all things pop and beyond, starting with her experiences as producer of TV show Ready, Steady, Go! in swinging sixties London, when Vicki became good friends with Dusty Springfield, through writing for Fabulous and Melody Maker to managing Labelle in the 70s and much else besides. Vicki talks about how she got her foot in the door of television and reminisces about writing lyrics for Dusty, then tells the story of moving to New York to open a US office for Track Records. We then find out how she masterminded the metamorphosis of Patti Labelle and the Blue Belles into groundbreaking pop trio Labelle, who Mark reckons paved the way for TLC and even the Spice Girls. Vicki, Mark and Jasper then listen to clips from an audio interview with Morrissey, in which the seeds of his later racism are occasionally audible, and Vicki admits that although she was nominally his manager for a short while, he was mostly interested in hearing the stories she had to tell. (In any case, he turned out to be unmanageable.) The trio then pay tribute to the Heartbreakers' Walter Lure, singer-songwriter Justin Townes Earle, Jack Sherman of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and R&B singer D. J. Rogers before Mark and Jasper present some of their highlights from the new pieces going into the RBP library. Mark selects pieces on pop television, Led Zep IV and Patti Smith, and Jasper rounds things out with the Scissor Sisters and Merzbow. Pieces discussed: Vicki Wickham, Ready, Vicki, Go!, Labelle's Nona Hendryx audio, Vicki Wickham's Pop Guide to London, Graham Nash, Ashford & Simpson, Morrissey audio, Jon Savage with the Heartbreakers, Pete Makowski on the Heartbreakers, Justin Townes Earle, Red Hot Chili Peppers, D. J. Rogers, TV pop, Led Zeppelin IV, David Bowie, Patti Smith's Horses, The Germs, Morrissey, Scissor Sisters, Richard Pinhas & Merzbow and Echo & the Bunnymen. This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts

This is a re-posting of sorts. I was going through old mixes trying to figure out which ones had not been posted to Mixcloud. I plan on posting some of those old mixes as-is to Mixcloud in the coming months. One of the mixes I dug up is Sequential Circuits, originally posted 12 years ago. Yikes! I've been doing this for a long time. I really like this mix but while listening to it I decided to give it one little tweak. I dropped two tracks by Detroit Escalator Co. & Geometric Farms and replaced them with a cut from Ash Ra Tempel called "Slightly Delayed." My favorite tunes in this mix are the Richard Pinhas tracks, "Sundial" from Steve Roach * "Hyperborea" by Tangerine Dream. I've been rediscovering Hyperborea lately and I think it's one of my top three TD albums. All this berlin school music has got me thinking about doing another sequencer mix using classic tunes like this one. I hope you enjoy this resurrected mix. Cheers! Emerging from a web of poststructuralist philosophy and electronic fetishism, France’s Heldon — whose name is derived from Norman Spinrad novel, The Iron Dream — functioned from 1974–1979 as a vehicle for Richard Pinhas’ wildest aural fantasies. The group’s first six albums work through an...

http://bloknayrb.deviantart.com/ a beginning an expedition is launched springs into being the journey begins This is a follow up to an earlier mix Leaving the Station, which had a train theme. I had several people ask if I was planning on a follow up and, well, here it is. My favorite track in this mix is El Divisadero by Chris Watson from his wonderful field recording album, El Tren Fantasma. I've used this track before but it's so awesome I just had to use it here. Another track in this mix that I've used before is Dialing in the Sun by Paul Ellis. It's an excellent berlin school cut that has this great clicky-clack sound that works perfectly here. The rest of the mix is a collection of old(Richard Pinhas) and new(Andy Stott) cuts. On a side note, I don't know if anyone has noticed but embedded in each mp3 for download is the mix tracklist. So if you're playing it on your phone or on some pc players, you should be able to see the tracklist when the mix is playing. Other mixes coming soon, or maybe I should say sometime this year, a sort of jazz mix, a new age massage mix, a sci fi mix, a dubby mix, a space rock mix, guest mixes and many more I haven't even thought of yet. I don't really like berlin school music much anymore. I used to love that style. The first electronic music that I bought was Tangerine Dream & Jean Michel Jarre. I liked both of those artists for a long time. Eventually I think I just became bored with that style of electronic music. Recently, however, I've been listening to some berlin-type music. It started with the latest Steve Roach release, Arc of Passion. I was enjoying the album quite a bit so I dug up some other berlin school or nearly berlin tunes to throw into a mix. Of course there is a cut from Arc of Passion as well as another Roach tune, "Sundial", which I absolutely love. Add in some old T-Dream, Klaus Schulze, Richard Pinhas(3 tunes) and I'm good to go. The Tangerine Dream cuts are from an old cassette that I had of "Hyperborea" which I used to play constantly 10 to 15 years ago. I'm sure I'll pass out this phase soon. But for now the bouncing sequencers of berlin school are getting plenty of airtime at home & at work. t r a c k l i s t : 00:00 Arp - St. Tropez 05:00 Solvent - wig $1 07:15 Richard Pinhas - la ville sans nom 10:30 Steve Roach - Sundial 17:30 Klaus Schulze - Euro Caravan 25:15 Richard Pinhas - Melodic Simple Transition 28:20 Tangerine Dream - No Man's Land 33:20 Robert Rich & Ian Boddy - Chamber 37:30 Detroit Escalator Co. - city lights 41:00 Geometric Farms - The Chemist's Lullaby 45:15 Richard Pinhas - Home ''ruitor'' 48:40 Steve Roach - Arc of Passion 59:30 Tangerine Dream - Hyperborea
