Ian and David look at the latest live-action Disney fantasy, Godmothered. Sharon Maguire's comedy is, fortunately, not another remake. However, the cliches fly fast and furious in this bizarre tale of fairy godmothers who are in danger of going out of business due to a lack of young girls needing their help.Jillian Bell stars as Eleanor, a young fairy-godmother-in-training who makes her way to the human world to help news producer Mackenzie (Isla Fisher) find her true love. The guys break down the many problems with this expectations-defying family film--from its odd messages to its sloppy story mechanics--and try to figure out just whom the filmmakers (and, indeed, Disney) are trying to impress.Godmothered is now streaming on Disney+.Show Links:Watch the Godmothered Trailer.Listen to Ian and David talk about Jillian Bell's previous film, Brittany Runs a Marathon (with guest marathon coach, Denise Sauriol).Follow David's film criticism at Keeping It Reel.Subscribe, like, and comment to the Kicking the Seat YouTube channel!

Here we are. Three zoos in three days. Columbus, Ohio. I know I was starting to feel the miles. But this zoo was just voted the number 1 zoo in America (that's right. Ahead of San Diego) by the USA travel guide. If you can't get pumped up for that then what can you? Let me get the bear picture out of the way right now. These guys were just laying around but they at least were nice enough to be close so we could get a good look at them. I have one picture of the front claws of this guy's buddy - yikes. You are not supposed to run when you see a grizzly bear but after seeing those claws I might have something running down my leg. This zoo was really good for getting close to the animals. Twice we got to pet snakes. This is a black rat snake - it is named as such because it is black and it eats rats. Lots of imagination in the scientific crowd. There were also goats, a bunny, a box turtle and a monitor lizard. The last three were right near the exit as we were leaving. What a great parting gift. The box turtle is unique because he has hinges on the underside of his shell so that he can crawl inside and fold up his shell for complete security. This guy put on a nice and close personal show. He walked back and forth right in front of us. Literally we were inches away. We learned there are three subspecies of tiger that are extinct. I wouldn't doubt more are on the way. They even changed the name of the Siberian Tiger to Amur Tiger because there are no longer any of them in Siberia. They are gorgeous. This zoo also has manatees. It was a bigger tank with lots of fish. One of the manatees -Stubby - lost most of her tail when she was hit by a motorboat. Propellers are the biggest obstacle right now. They are in Florida and the not-so-funny joke is that 9 out of 10 manatees have propeller scars on their backs. Great creatures. It was really cool to see a Koala. Not technically a bear but still looks super cuddly. My most cherished stuffed animal is a Koala from when I was a little kid. These guys didn't move while we were watching - they are pretty much doped up from the eucalyptus - but it was cool. We also learned that they don't drink because they get all the water they need from the leaves. One of the big highlights was seeing this guy. A 4 1/2 month old Asian Elephant. He was super cute. He was almost black - I guess Asian Elephants are darker - and looked so small next to his mom. He weighs a robust 600 pounds. He was shorter than Dayne (and maybe Evan). That is really packing it on. We almost missed him. He goes off exhibit at 2pm since he is so young. It would have been a real bummer. Here is my stinky girl. I say that because the flower she is in - the Rafflesia plant - really gets to three feet in diameter and is really stinky. She is so cute though. And this is what that super cute girl loves so much. We are 3 for 3 with flamingos on this trip. She is in heaven. These guys were nice and close. The pink color actually comes from the food they eat. I got that nugget from watching the Tour De France and not from the zoo (thanks Phil). And finally, this is Dayne and Evan - I mean a pair of Langurs. They put on a good show. In the next exhibit over there was a baby. The baby is really cute because he is orange. Easy to spot but not so easy to get a picture of. They were hiding in a dark corner and always moving around.Tomorrow we are having a fun day - as if this whole trip isn't fun. We are staying in Columbus and going to the water park.

Kodiak Rider Recon

We hit the Toledo Zoo next. Well, we did spend an extra day in Columbus and had lots of fun at the water park that is attached to the zoo. We had our first real experience with the wave pool and really enjoyed it. We weren't sure what to expect in Toledo because it seemed to be a smaller zoo. There were some really good reviews online and it fit perfectly into our trip logistically. When we got off the highway we drove through a lower income area and wasn't sure what to expect. Once at the zoo, though, we were pleasantly surprised by the presentation. Here is the entrance. I'm not sure why but when the kids line up for pictures more times than not it is in height order. It is really funny. The zoo is divided by a road into two sections. This picture is in the first section. It is hard to see here but this yard was very intriguing. A zoo in general separates all of the animals and only occasionally do they mix animals in the same physical area. This yard was a big breath of fresh air. According to the sign there were 13 different species in the yard. There were zebras, giraffes, wildebeests, east African crowned cranes, ostriches..... It was great. It made you feel more like you were in Africa. Kudos to Toledo for this one.The Polar Bear exhibit was a nice one too. There was indoor and outdoor viewing. They weren't swimming at the time but if they were it would have been a fantastic view. An interesting thing about polar bear exhibits is they are all pretty boring from a color perspective. In the wild they are almost always on snow or ice - in fact they are on ice flows over the ocean a good part of the year. So you never see many trees or other "decorations". They just aren't used to seeing colors other than white (BTW - a polar bear's skin color is black. Their hairs are actually clear and hollow. The light from the sun shoots down the "fiber optic" hairs to the black skin to help keep them warm. And the fact that thy are hollow helps trap the warm air. The inches of blubber help too.) Right next to the polar bears are the seals - which in a way is kinda mean. I mean they eat seals and must be able to smell them - they have a great sense of smell. The seals were actively swimming as usual. This time something really funny happened. One seal was gliding along at the top of the water upside down. And another seal was also swimming at the top of the water but right side up. The next thing you know they bumped heads. You never think of something like that happening because they are so graceful. We all got a nice chuckle out of it. We also saw lions there. And these were special lions. Not only were they the rare white lions (which is really just a lighter shade of tan) but they were from the Siegfried & Roy show. The white lion isn't actually a separate sub-species but just a recessive gene. Hope is that some will pop up again in the wild. This rhino was interesting. If you take a close look at the horn you will see it bending forward. I've only seen them bend backwards. Also his horn was really big. This is a sloth bear. And in a zoo most animals kinda take it easy and just lay around. For a sloth bear I would expect even more so. But they were active on this day. Running around and having fun. This is one of Dayne's pictures. Toledo was the only zoo on our tour that had hippos. In fact the address of the zoo was 2 Hippo Way. They even had their own hippoquarium. And they were also on the move. They walked in the water as you can see and also on land. They are monstrous creatures. Death by hippo is the leader in animal deaths in Africa I believe.Dayne was fascinated by the cheetahs so I would be remiss not putting one of his pictures here. There were two in Cheetah Valley. These were the only gorillas we were able to see. The gorilla yard was at the far end of the zoo and by the time we got there the gorilla house was locked (and the zoo was actually closed). All the gorillas were in the house and the yard was empty. So we made our way back to the entrance seeing no more visitors. Thankfully the gift shop was still open. Then when we made our way to the parking lot there were only two cars left - ours and one other with people already in it. We actually closed the zoo haha. This was the last of our zoos on this trip. I have already gotten suggestions from people on other zoos to try (St. Louis and Omaha) and have serious interest in NY and DC. We will see. We were glad to share this with everyone and are thankful for the great comments. It was a lot of fun. Editors note: I forgot my adapter for my camcorder so I wasn't able to post any video from that (all videos have been from my camera - that thing is awesome). So there will hopefully be more supplemental material to come. My special note: The time with the kids was incredible. Being with them 24/7 was fantastic. I love them so much. And I don't think I heard one peep out of them the whole trip complaining about anything. They were ready for the challenge and were very helpful and went along with everything. So thanks kids! I hope we can do something this special every year. I love you!!!

Australians have been laughing, cursing, sighing and facepalming over a misspelled word on the newest printing of the Australian $50 dollar note. They left out an I in the word “responsibility,” and no one in the country is apparently missing the irony of misspelling that particular word and not catching it until 46 million of them had been sent out into the financial world. Creating currency is a complex process, so it’s only natural that there are flaws. Most of the errors get caught before being sent into circulation. But not always.

The present tense is pretty simple in German: there's only one. So where English has to choose between Sarah is walking to work and Sarah walks to work, German has only Sarah geht zu Fuß zur Arbeit. However, whereas English only has two different forms of each verb in the present tense (apart from for the verb to be), e.g. walk and walks, have and has, German verbs have lots of different forms in the present tense (typically four or five), depending on which personal pronoun you're using. (Personal pronouns are words like I, you, we and they.) This podcast explains more about the present tense and the different forms the verbs you use in it take.To listen to the podcast on you computer, click here.

• You know how an Eskimo kills a wolf? The Eskimo takes a knife blade with blood soaking and then let it freeze. The Eskimo repeat this process several times until all the blade is completely covered in blood and well frozen, like a giant blood palette. After this process, the Eskimo takes the knife and buried in the snow with the blade pointing upwards. Audio of the Sermon. Video of the sermon. When to Use the Perfect Tense

German GrammarPod

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 21, 2009

This podcast is about when to use the perfect tense. The perfect tense is the ich habe es getan tense and corresponds in form to the I have done it tense in English. But the rules on when you use the tense are rather different in German. The German one is often interchangeable with the simple past tense (the ich tat es tense), whereas in English, past tenses are usually not interchangeable with each other. As a rule of thumb, Germans use the perfect tense to express the past tense in spoken German, except with certain verbs and except in certain situations. The verbs with which the perfect tense is usually not used (apart from for situations for which the perfect tense is the preferred tense) are the auxiliary verbs, modal verbs and, in Central and Northern Germany, also certain other common verbs. These are used in the simple past instead. If you'd like to listen to this podcast on your computer, you can do so by clicking here.I've put a list of which verbs aren't generally used in the perfect tense on my geocities site, where I put grammar tables and transcripts of the episodes: http://sites.google.com/site/germangrammarpod/past. The website also includes a table showing the information I've given in my podcasts so far about when to use which tense. It's always tricky to describe when a tense should be used in a foreign language, and there's a lot of seemingly contradictory information out there. To compile this episode, I mainly used German-language Wikipedia:http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfekt andhttp://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pr%C3%A4teritumwhich, slightly disturbingly, both seem to have been rewritten since I used them for information (although a native speaker did recommend the sites at the time I used them, so at least one native speaker did think they were supplying correct information as they were).I also used the book Hammer's German Grammar and Usage (in my case the second edition). Here's a link to the fourth edition on Amazon: Hammer Grammar, although I recommend any edition of it that you can get your hands on.I also liked the information in about.com on this topic: http://german.about.com/library/verbs/blverb_past.htm

Leaves from a Lutheran notebook

There is so much more I want to write about, but in these minutes before class, this is enough: on Saturday we took Audrey and Curtis to see Star Trek at the movie theater at Aupark (our most convenient mall here in Bratislava.) It was wonderful for many reasons:Audrey and Curtis were visiting us. The Palace Cinemas have assigned seats--they are clean and comfy and the most pleasant movie-going experience imaginable. Real butter for my popcorn? Yes, please. Slovak (or are they Czech?) subtitles are always cool and interesting to try to follow. The crowd loved it. This should be expected of a wonderful new Trek movie, but it was especially wonderful to experience outside of the US. What's not to love? It's a great movie. It makes me want to lose several days of my life watching all the Star Trek I can get my hands on. I will not do this anytime soon (sermon to write, project to get underway, paperwork ever-looming, worship to plan, classes to teach ...) but I hope to have a marathon at the first opportunity. Star Trek has had a fairly profound influence on me, as you can read and listen to in my most recent sermon from BIC. It's a reworking of my senior sermon from LTSP and also the sermon I submitted for my approval essay. I was a little worried about making Trek and Lord of the Rings references in an international context, but the story worked well. Spock is universal. =)

Hey, so check it out. Victory Home & Garden will soon become Anarchy in the Garden™. Not to diss VH&G but I was never in love with her. It conjured up too many images of the victory gardens of yore and that’s all good but it’s not what I’m about. The victory I speak of is victory against the man, corpo agribusiness. It’s the ability to whip up an organic vegan feast from the garden in minutes and with two dogs and an omni husband I need to!Anarchy in the Garden™ is a mixture of DIY ingenuity and tried-and-true old timey techniques with a punk attitude. It’s not your grandma’s grandma’s garden. I’m not trying to reinvent the wheel; just give you my perspective, share my techniques, what works and what doesn’t. Most importantly I’ll share my failures so you don’t screw up 160 soil blocks like I did.So here’s a short slide show on the high tech deep watering system I employ. A video would have been better but the mic on my camera is useless. Directions:Step 1: Locate a 1 gallon nursery container (you know you have a ton in your shed).Step 2: Drill ½ in holes (or get the husband to do it like I do) all around the container up to the lip.Step 3: Dig a hole where the container will be “installed.” I usually shove one of these between two tomato plants.Step 4: Fill the container with water. Y voila! Why do I do this? Good question. Firstly, this is the only way I’ve ever watered my tomatoes. Second, I don’t have a fancy drip irrigation system. That would just be too easy. These watering containers slowly allow water to seep through the holes and directly to the plant’s roots. Establishing a strong root system equals happy healthy long producing plants. Did I mention I have tomatoes long into December? Also, it frees up your hands. I’m a multi-tasker. I can’t just do one thing at a time. Dump the hose into the watering container and walk away; tend other garden chores. Keep an eye on the water level, once it reaches the top toss the hose into the next container. You can even splash a little Sea Magic Organic Seaweed Growth Activator like I do. Have fun!

Death note - "L Change the world"( Direct Download & Podcast )LOn vous en parlait déjà sur cette news: L Change the world.

I was honored to preach this morning at St. Luke's, my home congregation. The texts were Isaiah 55:1-5; Psalm 145; Romans 9:1-5; and Matthew 14:13-21. I also got to do the children's message, but I'll post more on that later! Also for a later post: a report on the wonderful party we had back at our house after church. But for now, subscribe to our podcast (via iTunes or other software) or download and listen to the sermon here. The text of the sermon (not a transcript, but close enough) is available as a pdf here and as a Word document here.It was a wonderful day spent with family and friends. Now it's 10 pm and my dad is starting to turn off all the lights around the house ... must be bedtime for Edison-Swift-Albrights. I will not argue! But first, a picture of me and Mommy, after the service:You can see more pictures from the service and the party on our flickr page.

Check Ride PrepA little late, but here is the footage for the short and soft field takeoffs and landings. I also included another day in here due to the fact that my camera continued to fall throughout the short/soft video. The last half of the podcast documents our return to basic maneuvers such as power on and power off stalls and emergency procedures. As of this journal entry things are progressing as planned. We are having some difficulty scheduling an FAA examiner, though. The DPE that the club primarily uses is having a medical issue that is under review from the FAA. Our other option is an airline pilot from Merritt Island. Unfortunately due to the current Delta/Northwest merger, he has been out of reach...not sure what the deal is with that. -EnjoyGregDownload the video

Night FlyingThis was my first introduction to a number of things. Night flying, a Cessna 172, right hand traffic pattern at an unfamiliar airport, and takeoff from a towered airport. The video quality is extremely dark, so in an attempt to make things somewhat better I increased the resolution of the video to 640x480 so you might make out some objects so this is the reason for the larger download. It is still pretty dark, though. There is some good audio for those interested in what is different with night flying.-GregDownload the video

The simple past - also known as the preterite or the imperfect tense - is equivalent in form to the English I did form (ich tat es). The way that regular verbs form their simple past is by a or being inserted into the present tense ending. For instance ich kaufe - I buy becomes ich kaufte - I bought and du kaufst - you buy becomes du kauftest - you bought. The German simple past is mainly used in written German, where it can express most past tenses expressed in English by either the I have done or the I did forms. It also crops up in spoken German, where it is preferred over the perfect tense for the auxiliary verbs (particularly haben and sein) and the modal verbs (müssen, sollen, mögen, können, dürfen, wollen) and also - in Central and Northern Germany - for some other common verbs. To listen to my podcast on your computer, click here.

Emergency practice day and towered airport operations.Today was the introduction to dealing with emergency situations due to engine failure on takeoff, cruise, and landing. Casey pulled the power back to simulate a failure. It always amazes me how you can have a cool head on the ground and think that you will have no problem picking a field, only to freeze at 1800 feet like a deer in the headlights. Practice makes perfect is what I tell myself. I will say that when the lesson was over I was more relaxed than I have ever been...which makes me feel like I am making progress. A good motivator for me is looking forward to the day when things become more second nature. We flew over to Melbourne International (KMLB) and practiced some landings and I was able to get some experience with ATC. Things got fairly hectic...very fast. Upon approach I was getting ready to announce my position and intent when a foreign helicopter student pilot chimed in and announced his position and intent for touch and go's. Apparently ATC believed him to be on the wrong frequency and instructed him to changed over to Space Coast tower in Titusville. He came back that he was indeed wanting to land at Melbourne, but there was a bit of hesitation in getting his request across and the language barrier did not help matters. When you watch the video you will understand when I say he did not make any new friends with ATC that day. You will hear a second pilot of similar country origin who it seems that they mistake for the first person, and he is promptly given the same treatment. It is extremely busy for ATC and I definitely can understand the importance of pilots being accurate and to the point....for safety purposes. A good lesson learned today.-GregDownload the video

Norman Gee, is the originator, artistic director and producer of Oakland Public Theatre in Oakland, California. As an Oakland actor and director he saw a need for a theatre whose mission was to serve the people of Oakland. Hence he created Oakland Public Theatre many of whose productions are performed in public spaces such as colleges and libraries. In honor of Richard Wright's hundredth birthday, he and Richard Talaveras, a local playwright, have initiated the Richard Wright Centennial Project, a series of ten readings that include Richard Wright's as well as other African American writers whose lives intersected Wright's life. The third reading of the series was performed at the San Francisco Public Library on Sunday, December 16, 2007. The series continues through the Spring and Summer 2008 at various locations. In the first part of the interview, Gee discusses the project, providing background about its origins and it's parameters which includes a brief introduction to James Baldwin, author of Go Tell It on the Mountain. The interview was conducted on October 7, 2007.Part 1--The Richard Wright Centennial ProjectPart 1 - Very Close to CD-Quality MPEG-4 (Broadband) (9.4M)Part 1 - High Quality MPEG-4 (ISDN) (4.8M)Part 1 - Highest Quality MPEG-4 available for Dial_up (3.0M)

Music excerptsiPods are all about music, and music was all over the Vietnam era. Excerpts from songs can be presented, along with information about the artists and timing of the song. With copyright restrictions often a concern, the safest way to do this is send students to iTunes sites with song excerpts. In this example, 4 excerpts are provided, along with some historical narrative from the liner notes of Vietnam - Songs from a Divided House, an 2 Cd compilation from the History Channel. Educational fair use policy was applied when developing this podcast.

What Should We Tell Our Children? The words of the Vietnam era can come to life through recordings and postings of selections from letters, diaries, memoirs, and other collections. An interesting technique is to involve different voices to give the characters some individuality (if multiple perspectives are used). Context for each of the primary sources must also be provided, whether It is information about the author or the setting of the source. In this example, excerpts of What Should We Tell Our Children About Vietnam by Bill McCloud are presented.
