In 1973, a Californian by the name of Archie Patterson became so enthused by all the interesting underground European experimental/electronic music he was hearing that he started up a fanzine dedicated to it, called Eurock. It lasted 40 issues, through 1990. In 1979, a Brit by the name of David Elliott felt much the same way and, in part inspired by Eurock and also by post-punk DIY culture, started his own zine Neumusik. While it only lasted 6 issues, until 1982, during that time it grew to over 70 pages and set David off exploring Europe to interview many of the important artists in person. What kind of artists are we talking about? Some of them you may know, like Can, Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk, Nektar, Neu!, Heldon, Chrome, or Urban Sax.. Others you may never have heard of, like Guru Guru, Asmus Tietchens, Atem, Art Zoyd III, Gunter Schickert, or Shub Niggurath. All of them were at the forefront of musical creativity towards the end of the 20th Century, and Eurock and Neumusik were at the forefront of the fanzines writing about them, interviewing them, and cataloguing their culture. Patterson grew a distribution service and began publishing books; he still posts twice-weekly about the music on his Facebook. Elliot started a “band,” a cassette label, and recently wrote an extensive book on the British pop music of 1984.For more information about their zines, their culture, and where to get copies of their books, please head on over to https://tonyfletcher.substack.com/p/adventures-in-neumusik-and-eurock Hosted on Acast.
Show #703 features a spotlight on Heldon's 2022 release, Antelast.

Always like to give you a rundown of new artists appearing on Sequences, starting with Timo Kaukolampi, with a throbbing and pulsating ambient piece, exploring the modular side of electronics, two US female musicians, Ann Annie’s self-exploration of dreams, textures, rhythms & uplifting, transportive and meditational sounds of Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, played on a Buchla Music Easel modular synth, colorful and detailed sequences of Curved Light, electronic manipulations of the cello, processed into unrecognizable textures from Julie Kent. Husband & wife duo Milosz & Magdelena Pekala, playing percussion instruments with the use of the vibraphone & marimba to great effect, accompanied by Asuna Arashi on synths & electro-acoustics devices. Hypnotic & warm modern grooves of Sine, the four-piece Texan band Thousand Foot Whale Claw, giving us a wall of sound Inspired by progressive 70’s German kraut-rock & finally Mikael Lind collaboration with the Tangs member Hoshiko Yamane, musically both have the knack for creating mesmerizing ambient music with classical influences, violin, viola and piano being at the forefront. Our vintage track In The Wake Of King Fripp, is taken from the 1975 Heldon album Allez Teia, no surprises here who this track was dedicated to. Opening for the show, Aussie duo Klaus with their new album Klaus 2, which is not a million miles from Froese, Franke & Schmoelling era of Tangerine Dream, enjoy. Emerging from a web of poststructuralist philosophy and electronic fetishism, France’s Heldon — whose name is derived from Norman Spinrad novel, The Iron Dream — functioned from 1974–1979 as a vehicle for Richard Pinhas’ wildest aural fantasies. The group’s first six albums work through an...

More Sunday morning music - this time all the tracks are from the 1970s. In collecting these cuts I discovered two albums that I somehow missed - Kraftwerk - Ralf & Florian and Cluster - Sowiesoso. I have plenty of Kraftwerk & Cluster in my collection but I didn't have those two albums & they are both wonderful. So thanks to Matt for suggesting those two records. Also thanks Matt for suggesting the Nue! track. That one was "new" to me and it fit perfectly. I know the Nick Drake tune was technically not the 1970s but I had already fallen in love with it & put it in the mix before I realized that it was released in 1969. Oh well. I went back and forth about using the Ralph Towner cut. It's a bit too pretty, almost new age-like, but I used to love that song. Along with Eberhard Weber, Towner's Icarus was my introduction into the wonderful world of ECM records back when I was in college. So I had to include it for nostalgia sake. I'm glad I did because it really is a beautiful tune. I wasn't able to squeeze in all of the great suggestions from listeners so I'm definitely going to have to do a second mix with this theme. I really want to work that Kris Kristofferson tune into the next one. And I didn't get a chance to work in Josh's suggestions of electronic library music. I sought out the Monkman album & it's so cool, it just has to be included next time. Too many good tunes left on the cutting room floor! I better get started on the next mix. Enjoy.
