For our first October episode, we try out another new opening, touch upon the recent catastrophic weather in Florida and the hazards of attempting near future SF in a rapidly changing world, with Norman Spinrad's Russian Spring as one example. After a brief digression (what else?) on novels that extrapolate political decisions more than technological change—like the two novels that preceded the movie Dr. Strangelove, we touch upon the question of whether J.G. Ballard may catch the current zeitgeist in the same way Philp K. Dick did a generation ago. Finally, a few more short digressions on whether awards like World Fantasy can significantly influence a book's sales or reputation, on the value of “best of” anthologies, and on what makes a good gift book for the forthcoming holiday season.

https://www.buymeacoffee.com/DavidAgranoff Author Cody Goodfellow two episodes in a row! Cody Goodfellow is the author of more than a dozen books but he is here to talk his new thriller from Titan books Vertical. It is one of my top reads of the year. WE have some general talk and the start and then get into the new book. I assumed once the secret of Cody Goodfellow got out he was on track to become the biggest writer of our generation, a household name, bestselling novels, home on paperback racks that kind of thing. To me, he was that good. Over time I learned that happens to your Ray Bradburys and Isaac Asimovs. When the people doing really crazy original stuff like Barry Malzberg and Norman Spinrad you get respect from the hardcore but it took death for Octavia Butler and Philip K. Dick to be recognized as the towering giants they were. They didn't play it safe; they wrote revolutionary genre fiction and sometimes it helps to be a mad scientist. That is what Cody Goodfellow is at heart, a mad scientist, who unlike most literary freakazoids from those earlier generations Cody grew up with more than a massive library, but also punk rock, alternative culture, and an open attitude toward mind-altering genre and chemicals. The kind of alchemy that creates in Cody Goodfellow a human who writes novels that are so good, so weird the world is just not ready for them. about

Ep. 30 (Part 2 of 2) | Rebel Wisdom co-founder Alexander Beiner has his finger on the cultural pulse of our times. Here he explores key challenges we face as a global community: sensemaking and truth finding in a culture that has lost its coherence as well as its sense of the divine, and what role psychedelics might play both therapeutically and spiritually in healing our culture. He discusses the need to go beyond the intellectual to find clarity and coherence, using embodied practices like meditation and inquiry, and explains how modalities such as these are an essential container for therapeutic psychedelic experiences. What if deep, spiritual, psychotherapeutic group processes were to inform political decision making? Are commodification and economics going to subvert the benefits of the psychedelic renaissance? Let's start asking, what do we want these substances to bring to the culture, and who has the authority to decide what psychedelics are used for? It's purpose: to destroy planets, consume the leftover debris to refuel itself and then move on to the next star system to repeat the process. Guilt-ridden over the loss of his crew and hell-bent on revenge, the Constellation's lone survivor, Commodore Matt Decker, takes command of the Enterprise, orders an irrational attack on "that thing" and puts the entire crew in harm's way in an effort to destroy it once and for all. The Doomsday Machine was the sixth episode of Star Trek's second season to air, with a traumatised starship commander intent on revenge against the machine that killed his crew. In this episode Gerry and Iain discuss the design aesthetics of planet killers. When the Enterprise encounters a distress signal from the USS Constellation, Kirk and the crew are concerned to find the ship apparently disabled and abandoned in a decimated star system. Once on board they discover the sole survivor is the commanding officer, Commodore Decker (William Windom). When Kirk becomes trapped on the wreck of the Constellation, Decker takes command of the Enterprise and leads it into conflict with the titular Doomsday Machine. Elsewhere, Lt Palmer (Elizabeth Rogers) does her best impression of Lt. Uhura. The Doomsday Machine was directed by Marc Daniels, the ninth of his fourteen Star Trek episodes. The writer was Norman Spinrad, his only story for the show. In this episode Gerry and Iain considered what Uhura was so busy with all episode long. The discussion continues in the comments below and please keep in touch with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram where we're @trekpodcast. You can listen to the show here on the website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Pocket Casts, TuneIn, Stitcher, Google or wherever you find your podcasts. The Doomsday Machine was released in 1967. It is 50 minutes long and originally aired on the NBC network. It can be viewed on CBS All Access in the United states, Netflix in the UK and is available on DVD and Blu Ray in other countries, including a comprehensive remastered set of all three seasons released by Paramount Home Entertainment.

Aktuális adásunkban a ’A végítélet fegyvere’ című epizódról beszélgetünk. Rövid hírszekció: • Augusztus 19-én lett volna 98 éves Gene Roddenberry, Jonathan Frakes pedig ugyanezen a napon ünnepli a születésnapját. • Csaba belenézett az Another Life című scifi sorozatba, ami a Netflixen magyar szinkronnal érhető el. A kibeszélő tartalmából: • A gombnyomásra megsemmisülő világ helyett napjainkra a globális felmelegedésre helyeződött át a hangsúly: ’A végítélet fegyvere’ aktuális jelentőségét boncolgatjuk. • Will Decker Matt Decker fia Roddenberry Csillagösvény novellájában.

We kick things off this week with an excerpt from the 1960s sci-fi novel Agent of Chaos by Norman Spinrad, which has a “hero” with a remarkably familiar name …   Other discoveries this week include some very off books written by candidate for the nomination for the candidacy to become U.S. President Marianne Williamson, the rumour of the possibility of a children’s book that Meghan Markle may be thinking about writing, the fact that Donald Trump Jr. has written a book, the defence of the bizarre Cats trailer by the T. S. Eliot estate, and a village game that involves hiding books from children.   After all that business is over, Rob rather appropriately ends the show with Wastelands: The New Apocalypse - an anthology of post-apocalyptic shorts stories edited by John Joseph Adams. Shortly after recording Episode 11 about the James Blish books, Barnes and Noble released a leather-bound collection of some of his Star Trek adaptions.  Star Trek The Classic Episodes has 43 episodes adapted into novel form by Blish. The collection is part of Barnes and Noble's Collector Series and was released for the show's 50th Anniversary.  It features beautiful art work on the front and back of the leather cover.   The one drawback of this book is that it does not list James Blish as the author on the cover, or anywhere inside.  Norman Spinrad wrote the introduction and even he didn't mention Blish.  Barnes and Noble does include a card affixed to the back of the book that does state Blish adapted the stories.  Perhaps the fact that Blish was not on or in the book prompted them to add the card after printing. Despite this fact, we highly suggest Star Trek The Classic Episodes for any fan that collects Trek books.

The Doomsday Machine. If you ask fans of The Original Series to name their favorite episodes, invariably “The Doomsday Machine” comes up. Even James Doohan named the episode his favorite of the series. In 1968, “The Doomsday Machine” received a Hugo Award nomination for Best Dramatic Presentation; but not all are in love with the story. D.C. Fontana named the episode her least favorite of the series, and the story's author, Norman Spinrad, has expressed disappointment with its translation to screen. Neverthless, "The Doomsday Machine" remains one of the essential hours of TOS. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Daniel Handlin, Drew Stewart, and Suzanne Abbott to find out where we stand on this story of a captain (well… a commodore) destroyed by the loss of his crew, the Moby-Dick allegory, the social message that H-Bombs are bad, the origins of the planet killer itself, and our thoughts on the remastered version of the episode. DS9 and The Mirror Universe. Dark, sexy, and totally unsubtle. That's the Mirror Universe. It's a place where everything you know exists but things aren't quite as you expect. First introduced in the TOS episode “Mirror, Mirror,” this universe dominated by an evil version of the Federation—the Terran Empire—is one of the most famous creations in Star Trek. Interestingly, however, this portion of Star Trek lives primarily not in TOS but rather in DS9. In this episode of The Ready Room we examine how Deep Space Nine brought us the sequel to “Mirror, Mirror” and how DS9 made this dark universe uniquely its own. In news we cover new details about the upcoming Star Trek event in London, CBS nixing the plans by New Voyages and Norman Spinrad to produce “He Walked Among Us,” Phase II's production of the original script for “The Child,” Chris Doohan's casting as Scotty in Star Trek Continues, GNP Crescendo's release of the complete score from Star Trek: First Contact, the ThinkGeek inflatable Captain's Chair, and George Takei on J.J. Abrams and original cast cameos. Plus a beloved Star Wars character makes a surprise appearance on The Ready Room.

Future's End. During the third season of Voyager we were treated to one of the more creative stories in the series, a classic time travel tale that took us back to the year 1996. The episode introduced the term Temporal Prime Directive (a concept that also popped up in DS9's “Trials and Tribble-ations,” which interestingly aired just two days before “Future's End.”) The story also marked a critical turning point for The Doctor, who became, you could say, “footloose and fancy-free” for the remainder of the series by obtaining his mobile emitter. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by two of the hosts of The Delta Quadrant podcast, JD Onesi and Charlynn Schmiedt (who is also our Voyager editor) as we discuss the ins and outs of Voyager's trip back to 20th-century Los Angeles. In news we cover Norman Spinrad's lost TOS script He Walked Among Us, Dayton Ward's new TOS novel That Which Divides, TNG Mounted Memories, new Star Trek busts from Titan Merchandise, and lots of movie news and rumors—including our take on the photos recently leaked by MTV and who we now think Cumberbatch is playing. Plus Greg does an unexpected imitation from another franchise.
