Have you ever wondered if it's possible to begin lifting heavy weights during midlife, perimenopause, or menopause? Let's talk about how lifting can be very beneficial to your bones, connective tissues, and everyday life. For beginners, you have to start slowly and surely, lifting until we feel that sweet spot. And for those lifting for some time now, let's discuss the safe progression of lifting weights. Notable notes in lifting during midlife: Don't rush going heavy. Let your connective tissues adapt. Understand your muscle fatigue and know when to stop. Listen to your body when to increase weights, increase reps and/or increase power. Do no harm to yourself. Do not underestimate recovery. For older women or those with injuries, keep in mind the 72 hours of rest in between workouts. Explore light activities during the recovery period like yoga. Consider cortisol tests to check on your body. Strength training beginning phase and progression is different per body. In this episode, Eylon Levy is joined by Dr. Shany Mor to discuss a recurring pattern in Arab history, which sees the launching of a war against Israel accompanied by intense jubilation and excitement. The terrible defeat which then follows, time after time, prompts the immediate adoption of a victim narrative, and, most concerningly, a total re-writing of history: forgetting why there was a war in the first place, and clearing the slate for the next attack. Without lessons learned, can we ever break free of this vicious cycle of ecstasy and amnesia?Read "Ecstasy and Amnesia in the Gaza Strip" by Dr. Shany Mor:https://mosaicmagazine.com/essay/israel-zionism/2023/11/ecstasy-and-amnesia-in-the-gaza-strip/Stay up to date:https://www.stateofanationpodcast.com/X: https://twitter.com/stateofapodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/stateofapodFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61556030695001 LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/company/state-of-a-nation

We talk about sacred geometry in historical painting and how that relates to what we do today, along with the power meditation and yoga practice have over the way we connect with a deeper sense of self. New Year. Same you. New GOALS & at least a year more wisdom behind you! Most importantly, it is A FRESH START! What are you going to do with it? I have seen so many people posting on socials about not needing new goals or super generic things like “I am going to learn to appreciate the smaller things and live in the moment”… Don't get me wrong… THAT SOUNDS AMAZING! But WHAT DOES IT MEAN!?!?!?!? How do you know you executed that? Is that just a cop-out to strive for something because you know you are terrible at following through in accomplishing things? FACT: Most people are… Few have figured out the secret sauce… I want to share that with you! Goals demand dedication, courage, and the occasional leap outside your comfort zone. It may not always be thrilling, but consider it planting a seed that will flourish. The Secret Sauce: Planning, Accountability, Monitoring, and Adapting. The common narrative is that resolutions fizzle out. However, here's where we redefine the game: setting a goal is just the beginning. Without a solid plan, even the loftiest dreams can wither away. Think of it as planning a road trip; you have a dream destination, but without a roadmap, you'll likely get lost. Resolutions are no different – goals without plans lead to nowhere. The reality is that you need a process and a community! You need to learn to trust and enjoy the process. You need to remember, it isn't about the day… it's about 366 of them! There is Power behind putting pen to paper… This is where the magic happens. Writing your resolutions isn't just a step; it's a personal promise. You're converting abstract dreams into tangible goals. This simple act significantly boosts your success odds. It's the spark that lights your resolution engine. But there's more to it! A written resolution serves as a visual reminder, keeping your objectives front and center, silently urging you to take action. Like I said above, *MOST* people are terrible at accomplishing goals they have to work for… SO THAT BEGS THE QUESTION… What qualities and practices turbocharge a journey to resolution success? Are traits are in those that are most commonly successful in accomplishing their goals?: 1. Clarity: Precise resolutions make for an easier path. Swap vague goals for clear, measurable targets. 2. Accountability: Share your resolutions with a trusted someone who can offer motivation and support. 3. Resilience: Understand setbacks are part of the journey; your ability to adapt and persevere is key. 4. Self-compassion: Be kind to yourself when you stumble. Remember, everyone faces obstacles; your determination sets you apart. Break your resolutions into actionable steps, and take control of your dreams like Sarah and John did. Craft a plan, be clear and specific, find an accountability partner, and embrace resilience and self-compassion. Armed with these tools, your resolutions can become triumphant realities. Does randomness lie in the eye of the beholder? ‘What' is music? Why is ordering often a consequence of scaling? Is there such a thing as non-repetitive music? Do there need to be ‘types' for there to be repetitions? Are there patterns out there independent of us? What would a Kantian say? Are fundamental algorithms at the heart of Nature? Does this conflict with fundamental laws of physics? Why can't finite state machines count? Are Turing machines able to recognize repetitions? How? Why isn't any combination of notes a raga? Why is ‘Sa' the fixed point in Hindustani classical music? Can the link between moods and musical keys / notes / ragas be understood via the pigeonhole principle? Is there a deep link between repetition and consonance (or dissonance)? Do we tend to classify things that are not ‘not different'? Is the ability to have knowledge of similarity a distinct faculty? Did Noah bring one pair of all animals on earth, or seven pairs of some and one pair of others? Was Noah and his family on the ark for a year, or for 4 months? Did Noah send out a raven or a dove? Why did God promise never again to destroy all creatures on earth? Our Bible gives us more than one answer to these questions, and this week Rabbi Jaech takes us on an exploration of these inconsistencies. The text of this podcast is available on our blog.If you like this podcast, you might enjoy the book Biblical Origins: The Political Intent of the Bible's Writers, by renowned Bible scholar Dr. S. We're diving into lesson number six from my mind-blowing weekend with the internet's top creators. Now, we've all heard the saying that it takes 10,000 hours to become a master at something…but that might not be the whole story. According to the brilliant Naval, it's not about the hours; it's about the iterations. It's all about the quality of those repetitions, not just mindlessly going through the motions.Let's take my writing journey as an example. When I decided to become a science fiction author, I knew I had to put in the work. So I set a goal to write 3,000 words every single day for a year…that's a million words in total. But here's the kicker…I didn't just write and write and write. I also reflected, sought feedback, and iterated on my writing. And guess what? It worked.Within a year and a half, I had published my first book. Now, let's talk about the creators I met at the event. People like Ed from Film Booth and Charlie Hooper from Charisma on Command. These guys are testing and iterating like crazy. They run hundreds and thousands of split tests, collecting data, and making incremental improvements. They're obsessed with iterations and refining their content to be the best it can be.So…if you want to reach the pinnacle of your craft, you need to embrace the power of iterations. Be obsessed with getting better with each iteration and unleash the power of intentional improvement. LEAVE A REVIEW if you liked this episode!! Huberman Lab Key Takeaways Mental training and visualization is best used to enhance speed and accuracy of a skill you already have some proficiency at, not necessarily for learning new things“Mental training and visualization cannot replace execution of real world cognitive or motor tasks you want to learn…but is effective in enhancing the speed at which you learn and the stability of that learning over time.” – Dr. Andrew HubermanPrinciples of mental visualization:(1) mental visualization needs to be brief (15-20 sec) and repeated;(2) mental visualization needs to be combined with real world experience;(3) mental training needs to be similar to real world experience;(4) naming and giving identity to real world skill and applying the same name to visualization enhances learning;(5) it takes longer to perform complex motor sequences in mental training and visualization just like it would in the real worldChoosing between real world training and mental training: real world training is better than mental training; mental training is better than no training; but ideally – you'll use mental training to augment real world training and improve speed, accuracy, and consistencyMental training can also be used to get you to stop or ‘no go' components of motor learning, like restricting inappropriate movements or thoughts (e.g., withholding inappropriate action or action sequence) For this training, it's especially important to perform mental training and real world training in combinationRead the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgIn this episode, I explore the science of mental visualization and its application for learning motor and cognitive skills. I discuss neuroplasticity-based skill development and the roles of focus, sleep, movement restriction, and agitation. I then present five key principles of mental visualization to enhance learning speed, accuracy, and consistency. I also provide examples of specific protocols, including repetitions, rest periods, and session frequency, and how to adapt these methods for injuries or breaks from traditional training. Throughout, I reference the scientific studies supporting these concepts. This episode should allow anyone to learn or teach more effectively through the use of mental visualization and training. When Maud Newton read about the traits of the Enneagram Four, she had to laugh out of pure recognition. “On my mother's side, there was this impulse toward larger than life stories. There wasn't really shame around difficult histories and that sort of thing. The greatest sin was to be boring.” Maud's ancestors were anything but boring. In this episode, Maud shares what she's learned about herself through exploring her ancestors' lives, and explains how we're setting ourselves up to repeat our ancestors' trauma and toxic patterns if we aren't able to acknowledge them first. — Maud Newton has written for The New York Times Magazine, Harper's, The New York Times Book Review, and Oxford American. She grew up in Miami and graduated from the University of Florida with degrees in English and law.

I'm responding in this podcast due to an overwhelming number of questions in response to a post on social media. Are you on TikTok? Instagram? Use YouTube? You'll see some regular snippets of workouts and workout tips there! I'm @flipping50tv everywhere! Let's dive into this episode. Ironically for a quick social post, there is a lot to unpack and you don't want to be too quick to follow someone's advice who says… do # sets and # reps.. That doesn't know you! And unfortunately… there's a lot of advice going on from stranger to stranger! 00:00 How many sets and repetitions should we do? How many sets? How many reps? Sets & repetitions, please! So, a social media post and a YouTube video demo prompted dozens, if not hundreds of questions and… trying to stay in character limit and respond was failing me! So here's the reason why the answer to how many sets and repetitions … especially for a woman in menopause is not an easy answer. The answer comes only after your collective answers to all of the following. We're working behind the scenes on the best way to give YOU a way to answer your own question. 06:23 What's your experience level? starting or starting over? moderately experienced and been lifting 2x a week for at least 6 months experienced, Athletic 11:20 What is your biggest priority? Bone density Increase muscle mass and strength for aging Increase metabolism to boost weight loss/body composition improvement Performance (in golf, tennis, etc or improve gait for aging and fall reduction) 15:12 What is your body type? More muscular, athletic (mesomorph) More linear, angular (ectomorph) Curvy girl with a little more padding in the cushions 20:38 Do you have any conditions, or prior or current injuries? Arthritis, fibromyalgia, hashimotos hyper mobility Osteoporosis or osteopenia 23: 42 What does the number of repetitions mean? It should be the number that you reach temporary fatigue at. How does the number of sets impact you? Number of sets shown to be most supportive of women over 40, so perimenopause to post menopause is at least 2. Three or even 4 may be appropriate for you based on your experience level and your self-assessment of hormones.
