Mobile Internet usage from connected devices like smart irrigation controllers has exploded over the last decade. From 2007-2017, data traffic on AT&T's wireless network increased more than 360,000 percent. But the upcoming 2G/3G network sunset dates are rapidly approaching in 2022. Implementing a transition plan will be essential for businesses to avoid significant disruption when these critical wireless networks they depend on for operating their smart controllers or other IoT devices the connectivity suddenly goes dark. Each iteration of wireless network technology has historically replaced the previous generation. But the idea that 5G will be a direct replacement for 4G is false. In fact, they're complementary and designed to coexist. Furthermore, 4G is expected to last for at least another decade, possibly longer, sharing the available spectrum between 4G LTE and 5G devices because of their integrated dependencies. The first 4G LTE sunset announcements as such aren't expected until after 2030, which means that companies can safely invest in 4G-based IoT solutions today and for the foreseeable future. Our guests from Digi International, a leading global provider of IoT connectivity products, services, and solutions, have connected 100 million-plus “things” over the past 30 years. We'll talk with them about what the 3G sunset means for business risk management, what will be possible only with 5G, and why most companies will be able to work just as well and at a significantly lower cost with the current 4G LTE technology. In this session, you will learn: Why do carriers shut down networks? Do all carriers have the same 3G sunset date? How will 4G LTE and 5G co-exist? What are the key considerations for choosing 4G LTE or 5G for irrigation applications?
Valves are critical to every irrigation system. Unfortunately, operation issues with valves cause many problems for growers and water managers, including wasted water, plant stress, and crop loss. Because electrical and mechanical issues cause valve issues, troubleshooting can be complex for many. Michael Pippen has spent a lifetime in irrigation and developed an easy, concise, and accurate strategy for troubleshooting irrigation valves and shares it with us. In this session, you will learn: How to quickly check the irrigation basics for clues to the valve problem. Understand what symptoms point to electrical problems and what points to mechanical issues. What water leaks from the valve mean. What water hammer is and how it damages your system. What to do when your valve doesn't turn off. What to do when your valve doesn't turn on. This session will make your life easier, and we look forward to seeing you on Wednesday.

Cannabis growers as a group are more interested in quality and sustainability than most water managers. Indoor growers have a ton of knowledge about water and nutrients and use the knowledge to their advantage. They are managing indoor cultivation scientifically. They perform at a very high level and have a thirst for more knowledge. Cannabis grown indoors yields an average value of $112 per square foot (0.1 square meter), according to a report on indoor farming by Agrilyst, well ahead of greens ($64 per square foot) and strawberries ($22). Agrilyst calculated indoor cannabis production to be 9,000 times more productive on a dollar basis than commercial corn production. The Denver University Law Review calculated a return of 22 cents to $6.67 per gallon (3.8 liters) of water from cannabis grown in Colorado, compared to 2 to 3 cents per gallon ROI from potatoes, another of the state's major crops. This sets up an interesting discussion about the best use of our most precious natural resource, water. As water gets more scarce, should the water go to those who use it most economically or to those who grow food? Jim Lauria will walk us through the opportunities to take advantage of and the pitfalls to avoid. Please join us to learn from one of water's most dynamic speakers.
Grass growing in strips between sidewalks and streets (commonly known as boulevards or parking strips) is not very useful but difficult to irrigate efficiently. As such, most of the water applied to these areas is wasted in overspray and runoff. A smart and easy way to reduce water usage AND improve curb appeal is to “flip your strip.” In other words, convert from high water use grass and spray irrigation to low water-use native or localscapes and drip irrigation. In this webinar, we'll cover the basics: How to best remove existing grass Weed barriers – yes or no? Use of chemicals (both to kill grass and to control weeds after) How to deal with trees currently growing in grass – specifically how to protect trees and irrigate them, so they THRIVE post-conversion How to irrigate your new “smart strip” for success
As the season draws to a close, water conservation continues to be a hot topic. One of the best technologies available today for water conservation is drip irrigation on center pivots for farming. This process has put farmland previously removed from production (due to insufficient water) back in production. In addition, it increases yields, significantly reduces evaporation, soil compaction, and eliminates wind drift. Our guest this week, Monty Teeter, will share successes from the past season and take us through some of his many recent achievements. It is a webinar you do not want to miss. Dragon-Line mobile drip irrigation combines center pivot irrigation and drip irrigation technology for agricultural irrigation. Dragon-Line patented technology combines surface drip irrigation efficiency with the flexibility and economics of mechanized irrigation systems. Dragon-Line is an orange drip-line tubing co-extruded from a blend of high-quality PE resin. The pressure compensating emitters are continuous self-flushing, welded to the drip line's internal wall, and fully operation at seven psi. Dragon-Line Emitter Tubing is attached to Dragon Flex Hose, which drags on the soil surface, thus the name “Dragon-Line.” As Dragon-Line is pulled behind the system, the emitters deliver a uniform water pattern across the irrigated area's full length. During this presentation, you will learn: How you can benefit from mobile drip irrigation Learn about successes growers had during the past season Why mobile drip irrigation is so successful Where mobile drip irrigation is most advantageous to use. Special Guest: Monty Teeter.
A dead tree needlessly cut down and hauled away is a tree deprived of half its life value and commendable destiny. Gillian Martin's presentation unveils the habitat value of dead trees. She persuasively illustrates their contribution to the diversity and sustainability of forests, yes, even the urban forest. You will learn what to consider when selecting and retaining a hazardous tree as a habitat tree in the urban forest, and Gillian hopes you will forever view a dead tree with greater interest and a desire to safely retain them when possible.
Rainfall is free irrigation, but if your controller is not measuring and using the rain properly for irrigation, you are missing out. Not to mention the embarrassment when your sprinklers are on and it is raining. There are many ways to suspend irrigation during the rain, but the more significant question is when to turn it back on so you do not overwater. In addition, watering before a rain is costly because your soil is saturated when the rain comes. Finally, rain is measured in inches, and irrigation is applied in inches per hour, and how much of the rain that fell is usable. We are going to answer all these questions on Wednesday. We will discuss: How to avoid having your sprinklers run during a rain. How to suspend irrigation during rainy weather and how to know when to turn irrigation back on? Using rain forecast to determine when to stop watering to take advantage of the rain. How much is water from rain is useful? Special Guest: David Laybourn.

A good irrigation schedule tells you how often to water and for how long. Easy right? Yes, until you start to think about all the variables that go into a schedule like soil type, temperature, wind speeds, cloud cover, how much water your irrigation system delivers every minute, and many more. In addition to those variables, you have situational variables like a newly established landscape or a particular zone with new plantings. It can be overwhelming. Fortunately for us, Gregg Black will teach us a simple process that steps us through all these variables and more to ensure you are applying the proper amount of water to your landscape or crop. Cannabis continues to be the most talked-about plant in amateur and professional growing circles. Even people who have no desire to grow cannabis or consume the products made with cannabis still talk about it and are fascinated with the subject. Who thought growing weeds would be so exciting and so challenging. There are wide-ranging views on the subject as well. Is it the natural solution to pain management and the answer to sales tax revenue problems. However, one thing everyone can agree on is cannabis is not so simple to grow well. Michael Derewenko, Irrigation Solutions Manager for Cannabis and Hemp, will take us through Jain's indoor design guide and explain how best to use this guide to ensure growing success. We'll walk through the process from POC to flush valves, discussing design variables, growing efficiently, and ideal products for each project. Bring your questions and walk away with answers. Properly designed, installed, and maintained irrigation systems save money and water. An understanding of basic irrigation hydraulics is necessary for any water manager. Acquiring the knowledge of basic irrigation hydraulics is more complicated than it seems. Math, theory, water at rest, and water in motion are all part of the equation. As a result, the way hydraulics is taught might be more important than what is taught. Dr. Franklin Gaudi, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo alumnus and a Project Manager for the Irrigation Training and Research Center (ITRC). Dr. Gaudi is skilled at making irrigation training interesting and will take us through the training. More importantly, he shares some stories about how he gets students to understand basic hydraulics. This will be educational and entertaining as well. As a bonus, Dr. Peter Livingston will join us to discuss opportunities to learn more about irrigation by studying at Cal Poly. Dr. Livingston is the Department head for BioResource and Agricultural Engineering Department. Dr. Livingston is the BRAE Department Head. Erik Wilson and Steve Malanca started My Job Depends on Ag to spread the word that everyone depends on agriculture whether they know it or not. Today with the drought in California combined with high temperatures across the country, the world of agriculture is changing rapidly, and we are all connected by and dependent on agriculture. The cost of drought comes in a variety of forms. Examples of economic impacts include farmers who lose money because drought destroyed their crops or ranchers who may have to spend more money to feed and water their animals. Economic impacts can be both direct, such as decreases in dairy production, and indirect, as seen by increases in the price of cheese. In addition to the economy, drought also affects the environment and society. For example, drought shrinks the food supplies of animals and damages their habitats. In addition, drought impacts people's health and safety. Examples of drought impacts on society include reduced incomes, fewer recreational activities, and higher heatstroke incidents. Special Guest: Erik Wilson.

Dr. Dave Goldhamer suggests for high yields next almond season ensure your almonds are not stressed during September. Be sure to eliminate stress on the tree as soon as the nuts are off, which means do not turn off your irrigation. In his trial, he discovered cutting off post-harvest irrigation resulted in an 800lb/ac yield loss the following year. After harvest, cutting off irrigation to your almonds trees may be the most significant contributing factor for creating low yields next year. Dave Goldhamer has conducted some excellent research on the positive effects of post-harvest irrigation on almonds. In this webinar, you will hear what the experts have to say about post-harvest irrigation requirements for permanent crops with an emphasis on almonds, pistachios, and vineyards. Harvest practices for these crops require a significant dry-down period with minimal irrigation water applied leading up to harvest. Although necessary, the practice leads to tremendous stress on the plants making post-harvest irrigation critical to restoring plant health and preparing the plants for winter and next year's crop. You will learn how Jain Logic™ is an integral tool to ensure you apply the right amount of irrigation water after your harvest. During this webinar, you will learn: What the University of California and Almond Board recommend for post-harvest irrigation Recommended water amounts leading up to the winter shut down Using satellite data to ensure plants are minimally getting what they are transpiring How to determine how much extra water is needed to refill the soil profile using SMP How to avoid applying excess water and keep it in the root zone Special Guest: Connor Cunningham.
Mark Arax is one of the foremost authorities on California's water. Two of his most recognized works about water are The King Of California: J.G. Boswell and the Making of A Secret American Empire, and most recently The Dreamt Land. Both these books deal with water and agriculture in California and do not shy away from any controversy. Mark's strength in telling the story of California water comes from deep and unbiased reporting. He sees the situation for what it is and this helps him find solutions. The Dreamt Land weaves reportage, history, and memoir to confront the “Golden State” myth in riveting fashion. No other chronicler of the West has so profoundly delved into the empires of agriculture that drink so much of the water. The nation's most prominent farmers—the nut king, grape king, and citrus queen—tell their story here for the first time. We are fortunate to be joined by Mark for an in-depth conversation about California water. We will explore the current water situation in California and possible changes needed to ensure success for California agriculture. We look forward to you joining us for this discussion, and we will be giving away free copies of his books for the best questions during the webinar. You can check out Mark's books here – https://mark-arax.com/
Summer is the most stressful time for landscape plants. Mix a drought into the equation, and you have a recipe for disaster in your landscape. Without enough moisture, plants can't function normally and are predisposed to damage by pests or diseases. Drought also makes plants less winter-hardy, especially if the drought occurs in fall as plants go dormant. The hot, dry conditions have a lasting effect, too—trees and shrubs, in particular, can take several years to recover from drought fully. Fortunately for us, we have Stacey Sturnot, Executive Operations Manager for Landscapes USA, joining us to teach us how to take the best care possible of our plants during drought. Stacey served for over nine years on the Board for San Diego Chapter California Landscape Contractors Association and was President for two years. Stacey holds multiple landscape and irrigation certifications, including Landscape Industry Certified Manager. In addition, she is a self-proclaimed “plant nerd” and a consistent solid reference for many plant lovers needing help and advice with their plants. During this presentation, you will learn: What is native plant material What are drought-tolerant plant materials and the difference between drought-tolerant and native plants? Plant pallet trends – current trends, what is going in, and what are we moving away from Do native plants need irrigation? Why? Do drought-tolerant plants need to be irrigated? Plant establishment best practices in drought Irrigation best practices for plant establishment / long term success ET controllers and how they aid the above Special Guest: Stacey Sturnot.
Drip tape is an excellent way to water many plants because it prevents disease by minimizing water contact with the leaves, stems, and fruit of plants. It allows rows between plants to remain dry improving access and reducing weed growth. It is a very efficient way to water and reduces the leaching of water and nutrients below the root zone. However, choosing the right drip tape for your project can feel a bit overwhelming. During this webinar, Michael Pippen walks us through a step-by-step process that makes selecting the right drip tape for your crop easy. In this training, you will learn: The correct diameter tape for my crop The appropriate wall thickness of the tape The proper spacing for what you are growing The best flow rate so your crop gets the right amount of water Special Guest: Michael Pippen.
California's farmers pump billions of gallons of water out of the state's underground aquifers to make up for the water not delivered from surface water. Due to the drought, the state is moving to stop it. Water measurement and water use reporting is a necessity for California agriculture. During this webinar, you will learn how easy it is to respond to drought conditions and comply with SGMA requirements using Jain Logic Pulse. We'll discuss easy-to-implement strategies and the benefits of monitoring your irrigation pump and filter station to ensure they are performing optimally. Also, learn how monitoring these parameters and using alerts can save water and maintenance costs. You won't want to miss this webinar where we will be announcing the best special offer on our new Jain Logic Pulse bundles with the new Seametrics AG90 ultrasonic flow meter. Special Guest: Jeff Tuel.
It would be remarkable to water every day when it was most beneficial to water. Still, life happens, and water managers are often asked to ensure water sprinklers are not watering during specific days and times. HOA meetings, municipal restrictions, outdoor weddings, and sports tournaments are just a few of the many reasons sprinklers can water at all times of the day. In the past, water managers used block days to ensure no water runs during these critical activities. However, now with strong municipal restrictions, it is more difficult to water. For example, when a city tells us, we can't water after 10 am. Using the block days feature, if we block a day, no watering will occur. The same issue is true if the restriction is before 10 am and after 6 pm. These drought restrictions make it harder to water. Time restrictions, a new feature of Jain Unity, make watering during strict restrictions due to drought easy. A time restriction can span any period from 1 minute to days, months, or years. In addition, you'll can easily configure and set any recurring restrictions, with or without an end date, of repeating events such as mowing day, site maintenance or inspection days, holidays, municipal restrictions, interval watering, and others throughout the season. During this session, you will learn: Where to find time restrictions in Unity Just how easy it is to use time restrictions The best water management strategies to use with time restrictions Additional ways to use time restrictions to save water. Special Guest: Daniel Martinez.
From Orange County and San Diego, through Oxnard and Santa Maria, and up to Watsonville, strawberries have been grown on the coast for years. For 2021 there are projected to be over 36,000 acres planted between the fall and summer seasons. This makes strawberries consistently one of the top 10 agricultural commodities grown in California. Strawberries are irrigated in several ways. What you use to irrigate them, how you irrigate and when you irrigate all make a difference in the quality and yield of the strawberries you grow. In addition, new technology shows how proper irrigation improves pest management as well. This week we are taking a hard look at the best ways to irrigate strawberries with Frank Toves. You will leave the session knowing the steps you need to take to maximize your strawberry yields. In this session, you will learn: What type of irrigation is best for your row sizing If you should use overhead sprinklers or switch to drip If you use overhead sprinklers, when is the best time to switch to drip irrigation What flow rates to use to increase yields Which micro-sprinklers work best for pest management for strawberries. This will be an information-packed session, and we are looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday. Special Guest: Frank Toves.

The replacement price of a mature tree can exceed $20,000, so you need to do everything you can to protect trees during a turf conversion. A large, mature shade tree is the most valuable asset of any landscape and provides many important benefits. Trees reduce energy use by providing shade and evaporation cooling. They also add beauty, provide wildlife habitat, and sequester carbon. Not only is it smart to preserve these valuable trees, but it is the responsibility of adept owners and landscape professionals to protect these high-value assets. During this session you will learn: How to protect the tree's root system during the conversion How much water to apply and where to apply it The consequences of damaged, cut-off tree roots. The proper irrigation products to use during the conversion. Special Guest: Andy Belingheri.
Consumers are more intelligent today. As a result, they demand more information to understand the products they buy. The Consumer Bill of Rights for Irrigation provides an excellent outline for understanding irrigation products. Consumers will use their dollars to express their trust and confidence in products and manufacturers. As an industry, we should strive to set a high standard for our products and services. We need to take steps to self-regulate or be subject to additional regulations from lawmakers who know less about irrigation than we do. In addition, most of our work takes place with a high level of trust from individuals. Most consumers don't worry about the quality of their water. Instead, they trust the food we grow and the landscapes we water are done safely and cause them no harm. This is the second part of a three part series, you can watch the first part here. In this webinar we will discuss: The questions you need to ask when purchasing irrigation products The product knowledge you need to buy the best product for the job What you gain with the proper questions and understanding Understanding the requirements of maintaining and operating an irrigation system for the life span of the products and the crop you are growing.
