The political will toward sustainability is constantly shifting, and with the official exit from the Paris Agreement and a ‘drill, baby drill' fossil fuel mentality, things are moving in another direction. This has created a climate of uncertainty for eco-minded businesses seeking support from government sustainability requirements. That said, the underlying drivers of a sustainable future—innovation, tapping into cost-efficient renewable energy, and consumer demand for ethical practices—remain intact. In other words, eco-champions are a tenacious bunch. Sourcing Journal has dug deep into the situation with its State of the Industry Sustainability Report, released the same day as our Sustainability Summit in New York. To discuss how the industry is moving forward, Lauren Parker, director of Fairchild Studio, chats with two editors who wrote the majority of the report: Jasmin Malik Chua, SJ's sourcing and labor editor, and Alex Harrell, SJ's sustainability and innovation reporter.
This March, I was blown away by the creativity of some of the best bars in the world. Not only were they making cocktails, but they were saving the planet. On the 17 and 18th of March 2024, the third edition of the Paradiso Sustainability Summit, organized by Giacomo Giannotti and his team, in partnership with Ketel One Vodka through their Garnished with Good program was held.Giacomo's bar Paradiso is ranked one of the best Bars in the world, and he established the Summit three years ago as an exchange of ideas and tools with the aim of raising awareness and making the industry more sustainable. This year, the event took place at Palo Alto - an indoor and outdoor space chosen for its approach to helping local communities. There were two stages for masterclasses, seminars, and workshops, a marketplace where local organizations showcased their sustainable projects and products, and, of course, pop-ups of all the invited international and local bars serving cocktails all day long! While I was there I caught up with not only Giacomo, but a few of the other speakers who are my guests on the program today. Riccardo Rossi and Michele Filip from Rome's Freni e Frizioni, Paul Voza from Oslo's Himkok, Vasilis Kyritsis and Dimitris Dafopoulos from Line in Athens, Alexandros Tselepis and Konstantinos Theodorakopoulos from The Bar in Front of The Bar also in Athens, Partick Howley from So Let's Talk, and last but certainly not least Timothy Etherington-Judge of Avallen Calvados and Healthy Hospo who gives us the place to start with sustainability to have the greatest impact. It was truly an eye-opening event, and they will most definitely inspire you to do more. Efficiency in the Supply Chain by a New Container Invention w/ Trevor Pan of BidBird AZ TRT S04 EP41 (204) 10-15-2023 Things We Learned This Week Malcolm McLean was the inventor of the shipping Container, and a key person in trade & globalization BidBird invented a container skin, a smooth panel for the side to reduce wind resistance & improve fuel efficiency Patent process and Patent Cooperation Treaty to register an invention in foreign countries Building a Prototype and doing a road test with a Truck plus a Container on a race track Guest: Tevor Pan, BidBird Principal Architect - February 2018 - Present Undergraduate Professional Degree - Landscape Architecture, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado 2003 Master Degree - Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, Scottsdale, Arizona 2006 o Twitter o LinkedIn https://bidbird.co/about THE FIRST CONSTRUCTION MARKETPLACE, AT YOUR FINGERTIPS. Trevor Pan, BidBird Founder & registered Arizona architect. Spending 21 years as an architect immersed in construction, manufacturing, and design, I've built a unique understanding of the construction industry's constant movements and challenges. I know that construction professionals are exhausted by the RFP game—and the collusion that can come along with it. I've seen invasive service platforms that trap users into thinking they're a lead generating machine, but then unethically charge them thousands with no quality results. When I set off to launch BidBird, I wanted to eliminate the red tape and corruption for suppliers, manufacturers, contractors, and building owners. And when my barber approved the irresistible alliteration of the name, BidBird was born. BidBird is the new way for construction professionals to achieve a constant-but-necessary thing: capture competitive bids for their materials through an efficient process. At its core, our mission is simple. We connect construction industry professionals around the country through an honest platform that doesn't cost users unreasonable fees, or their dignity. With its simplicity comes big things. BidBird is an opportunity to beat out the “big guys” by just a penny, equalizing the hunt for businesses around the country. We strive to combine high-value jobs + the innovation to evolve with construction professionals' needs to transform businesses, one bid at a time. Notes: Seg 1 Preview clip of Trevor Pan Malcolm McLean and the History of the Container This leads to a new level of capitalism, modern globalization & wider trade Malcolm Mclean is the inventor of one of the most major inventions in history that affects people daily. He is also not known by many people despite the impact he has had. McLean owned a trucking company and he used to ship goods via boat. He'd be waiting on the docks with cotton in the 1940s in early 1950s for hours. Ships would be docked for a month, as men were loading crates by hand. The same system was being done with global trade and sea trade for thousands of years. Mclean got tired of this, and trying to figure out a solution to the problem like any entrepreneur. Find a need and fill it. January 1956 - he debuted the box ship. McLean got a $22 million loan & bought 2 World War II tankers and converted them. In April 1956 the first one sailed from New Jersey to Houston. This cut cost from 5.86 per to $.16, a 95% drop or 36 fold savings. Oct.1957 - the first real containership Gateway city launched. Trip went from New York to Florida to Texas and then on later to Puerto Rico. Per McLean, ‘the ship makes money when at sea'. In 1963, container ports had been created, by 1966 in Europe, 1967 Vietnam had container service, and 1969 Hong Kong and more Southeast Asia. McLean got a patent which is shared, called – standardization, and the standardize size container for shipping. He created a company, called Sealand Industries - which was then bought by RJ Reynolds. Eventually they were mergers and oil companies that bought out the line and today it's on by MAERSK. Goods are shipped today for pennies on the dollar, all because of McLean‘s invention. He changed global trade, shipping, oil exploration, and more. It's a multi trillion dollar invention. It also created port cities like Oakland. Every day it affects all sorts of goods and trades finance, big companies like Walmart and Apple. Not sure if we would have globalization if not for Mclean. At least not as fast. More Info on Malcolm McLean: HERE Seg 2 Trevor Pan of BidBird created a skin for a shipping container. Smooth out the side of the container and stops wind drag and the grooved pockets that are trapping air. It is a panel that is magnetically put on the side of a container. Saves mileage and fuel efficiency with truckers, likely will have the same effect on trains. Could even help fuel efficiency on freighter ships which are carrying 10 containers stack tie and 1000 feet long with hundreds of containers on a ship. Trevor started the company in 2020, with his background as an architect. Also has experience in coding and engineering. He has created construction materials. This led to him researching freight from East Asia to build and create its construction materials. Meanwhile the time during Covid and 2020 shipping rates were off the coast of California with the supply chain issues. Created his container skin and got the patent in July 2021. Seg 3 Process for an invention First, come up with the idea, which is easy. Then have to do a patent application. Now to the hard part, build a prototype. Then to the hardest part - you have to market and sell your initial product. Find the problem, solve a problem, create the solution, & find a client to sell to. Trevor did his own patent filing. Trevor had a background already with his design skills and had done a patent for previous inventions. Also did his own legal paperwork. Patents for shipping container scan. Under utility patents, which are patents for machines. Patent It Yourself - book by Donald Pressman Normally you would hire a patent agent or an attorney to file your patent but Trevor read the Pressman and did it himself. He was so obsessive, that he actually read a 6 Volume set on patent claims, which was over 2400 pages and took almost 6 months. Also got a Patent Cooperation Treaty so you do the work one time with filing the patent and then you can use the same patent template in multiple countries. The Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) assists applicants in seeking patent protection internationally for their inventions, helps patent offices with their patent granting decisions, and facilitates public access to a wealth of technical information relating to those inventions. By filing one international patent application under the PCT, applicants can simultaneously seek protection for an invention in a large number of countries. He is working on building a prototype to prove that his container scan is aerodynamic and would work on a real road test. He has contacted major industrial companies like Piedmont Plastics to build machine grade plastics. Also used a 3-D printing machine to create a mini prototype. Trevor has done the math to keep the magnets and panels on the side of a truck driving down the highway at 65 miles an hour. Regarding the marketing and sale of the product, Trevor actually contacted the top 6 logistics companies in the US and got little to no response. Seg 4 Big logistics companies like JB Hunt did not even respond to Trevor on his idea. Trevor has worked to sell his idea organically. He went to Innovation Zero trade show in London as well as a Sustainability Summit also in the London area being put on by the Economist. He was able to talk with the business and trade department in the UK. Has a contact who is a trucker, and would rent a raceway to test his prototype container skin on the road. Have to have flexibility to get a good idea going. Is also working on buying a shipping container. Researching shipping containers, you can get one for $500 from Russia. Actual cost for a container from the U.S. for about $3000. Putting together a patent, you have to do a search report to see if someone has an already patented the idea. This takes upwards of 1 year to file a patent. Trevor also reached out to government organizations about the fuel efficiency with his product. Reached out to the EPA, and their smart way program, to see about certifying the aerodynamic capabilities. The EPA contacted him but is not going to move forward with it. He also contacted an environmental organization in the state of California and did not get anywhere. Question: Since Trevor still needs to do the prototype and show a real world road test, is it too early to contact organizations as potential sponsors or clients? Sometimes the idea is too early, and the world is not ready yet. Green Gab Podcast – Green Homes, Green Living and Green Companies
In a world increasingly driven by the pursuit of sustainability and community well-being, the rise of B Corps is emerging as a beacon of hope for a more conscious and responsible business approach. I was recently captivated by a charming shop called Plenty Mercantile, nestled in the heart of Automobile Alley in Oklahoma City. It is a delightful store that embodies the principles of sustainability and ethical entrepreneurship, and I was thrilled to meet Traci Walton, one of the owners! I'm Marla, the Green Home Coach! Today, I invite you to join me in exploring the incredible achievements of Plenty Mercantile and learn how they charted their course toward becoming a B Corp. So, fasten your seatbelts for a heart-warming and inspiring tale of entrepreneurship, sustainability, and the pursuit of a better world! The Origin of Plenty Mercantile Plenty Mercantile came into being due to Traci and her daughter Brittany's passion for sustainability and desire to bring sustainable practices to mainstream retail. Traci was raised by her Native American grandmother, who instilled the values of respecting the environment, which further influenced their vision for the shop. The idea to create a store resembling their home and promoting sustainability took root, and they embarked on their journey of starting Plenty Mercantile in 2012. Becoming a Leader in Sustainability in Oklahoma City Plenty Mercantile has played a pioneering role in promoting sustainability in Oklahoma City. They aim to create a safe and welcoming space for customers to shop while making informed choices to support sustainable practices. Becoming a B Corp A B Corp certification is a voluntary designation for businesses and organizations committed to positively impacting people, the planet, and profitability. Traci explains that they aspired to become a B Corp from the start, aligning their business practices with sustainability on every level. However, achieving the B Corp certification was challenging. After years of following the B Corp structure and seeking improvement, they finally enlisted the help of a consultant, which proved to be a game-changer in guiding them toward their B Corp certification. The Importance of B Corp Certification The significance of a B Corp certification goes way beyond just marketing a company as sustainable. It involves a deep dive into financials, governance, impact, and various aspects of business operations, providing third-party verification of their sustainable practices. The Power of Making Sustainable Choices Sustainability does not necessarily mean higher costs. It means there are cost-effective and sustainable alternatives available in the market. Making sustainability choices sends powerful messages through purchasing power and contributes to long-term positive change. People-Centric Sustainability Sustainability is people-centric because it focuses on how sustainable choices positively impact individuals, their health, and future generations. Considering the health implications of products and practices is crucial for everyone- especially those who are cancer survivors! Building a Sustainable and Equitable Business Sustainability is integral to the business values of Plenty Mercantile, and it gets reflected in every aspect of their operations. Traci points out that sustainability extends beyond the products they carry in the store. It also encompasses how they treat their employees, community engagement, and overall business practices. Encouraging Others to Pursue Sustainability Traci aims to inspire others to pursue sustainability and B Corp certification. Sustainability is a journey that requires continuous effort and improvement, and she hopes to see more businesses in Oklahoma and beyond adopting sustainable practices and becoming B Corps because it will positively impact communities, the environment, and future generations. Celebrating Sustainable Products Traci and I love sustainable products! We also enjoy educating consumers about the benefits and values of using sustainable products and explaining why they should choose products that align with their values and contribute to a sustainable future. The Role of Plenty Mercantile in Promoting Sustainability Plenty Mercantile is a leader in promoting sustainability in the retail industry and creating a positive impact on the planet and the lives of individuals. Its commitment to sustainability has shaped its unique identity as a sustainable lifestyle store, offering products that meet the needs of consumers and align with their values. Navigating the Challenges of COVID-19 Despite the challenges of COVID-19, Plenty Mercantile managed to stay afloat. They used the opportunity to expand their online presence and went from offering 400 products on their website to an impressive 4900, making their online platform robust and thriving! The expansion allowed them to delve even deeper into understanding the ethos behind each product and the companies they work with, reigniting their passion for sustainability. Showcasing Sustainable Home Goods and Eco-Friendly Products Plenty Mercantile proudly offers an array of sustainable and eco-friendly home goods and products. From direct imports from Nepal to toys and baby products that prioritize health and sustainability, the store has been dedicated to curating products that align with its vision of responsible and ethical consumption. The Positive Impact of Making Sustainable Choices Sustainable choices need not be expensive, and consumers can positively impact the environment by choosing products that align with their values. The Sustainability Summit Sustainability efforts get amplified through collaboration and partnerships. To foster a sense of community and bring like-minded individuals and companies together, Traci and I are co-hosting the Oklahoma Sustainability Summit. The event will serve as a platform for businesses, organizations, municipalities, and individuals interested in sustainability to connect, share ideas, and collectively drive positive change. We hope the summit will inspire people to demand more sustainable choices and support local businesses prioritizing sustainability! Expanding Sustainability Efforts and Future Endeavors Plenty Mercantile continues to expand its sustainability efforts by actively seeking ways to incorporate environmentally friendly practices into its operations. They are excited about their upcoming store at the airport, where they can introduce travelers to sustainable choices and showcase local businesses that align with their values. They are also actively exploring electric vehicles and renewable energy as part of their commitment to a greener future. Creating Healthier and Happier Communities Traci and I believe that sustainable choices are not only beneficial for the environment but also contribute to healthier, happier communities. Through collaboration, education, and the Oklahoma Sustainability Summit, we hope to inspire others to make informed choices that promote positive change and create a more sustainable world for future generations! Welcome back everyone! This week Charli got to talk to Michelle Schwery, an inspiring woman in and out of the workplace. Michelle Schwery is a Portfolio Director for ABB – US Motion Services Division, with more than 18 years' experience in electrical equipment service. Through those years, she has worked to understand customers needs from an outside in approach and has used that to develop the products and services to provide the next generation of support for her customers. Her passion for sustainability and a circular economy have brought this to the forefront of portfolio development for the US service group. And as the ABB US Sustainability Champion, she spends time bringing the sustainability discussion to the ABB team ensuring they all know how important the future of sustainability goals is to ABB and ABB's customers, and how they can work together to have a positive impact on the future and society. This allows for a unique position in supporting our customers' needs for a carbon reduction all while still supporting their critical needs in their production facilities. When she isn't teaching you all about sustainability and circularity or bringing the next generation service product to your production facility, she is working with the ABB Diversity and Inclusion team, Encompass Women. In her home time, she is spending time with her family, gardening, cooking, and sharing those joys with her husband, 5 kids, and whole crew of animals in rural Wisconsin.Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Sustainability Summit in February! It is hard for me to believe that this is episode 100. It has taken me almost 2 years to get to this point and I am still going strong. Over the last 99 episodes I have covered a wide variety of topics. In this episode I want to simply review some of the more popular episodes and hopefully continue to instill in everyone not only the desire to start living more sustainably but also prove that there is an enormous need to do so. I also want to show once again that living sustainably is actually more economical than you think and if you really apply yourself, it is very easy to function well outside of mainstream society and have a very good quality of life. So, if you want to quick overview of what I have covered in the last 99 episodes, and if you want to know a little bit about what is coming up in the future with this podcast stick around for the Sustainability Summit. Always remember to live sustainably because this is how we build a better future. Patrick

Our guest on the podcast this week is LeeAnn Mallorie, CEO of Guts & Grace Leadership and founder of the Meme Project, Sustainability Summit. LeeAnn began her career as an executive coach at 26 years old, working with leaders and top teams from around the globe. Yet she soon found something was missing – the body. She now helps leaders combat burnout and align with purpose by bridging the gap between the hard-driving, logical mind and the deeper wisdom of the soul. Her book, Guts & Grace, offers an unexpected doorway to greater power, ethics, influence, and impact at work. Today we're going to be talking about shaping the future of our world in more intentional ways, as leaders begin to embrace regenerative leadership. LeeAnn shares her own real-life experiences with leaders, the challenges and the opportunities that are alive at this moment in time, and how we're all coping. We talk about this time of disruption and the potential of business to change our world. LeeAnn shares an important insight, how those of us without positional authority might actually be the ones who can bring forward the most effective changes to reimagine a different way of doing business. It's clear we all have a role to play in shaping our collective future and LeeAnn helps us understand how… Listen in as we talk through the natural evolution of LeeAnn's work, including how we can elevate our personal leadership to evolve the collective towards something new. How we can begin to see our lives as a critical part of the whole, to transcend and include our individual perspective. She asks the question "How can we create more life for everyone?” Change can be hard especially when it needs to happen at the level of identity, understanding the risk and making the case for systemic change can be a challenge. LeeAnn shares how some of her leadership clients are navigating and making the business case for inspiring regenerative change. “You are the one you have been waiting for”. LeeAnn has also begun to bring changemakers together under the “Meme project” bringing together a powerhouse group of world-shapers to collaborate, co-create and support each other while doing this deeply transformational work. She is building a powerful network to help changemakers amplify the ripple of change and its ultimate impact. If you have ever had the sense there is more you could be doing to make even small changes that would benefit your organization, life and business then I encourage you to listen to this deeply resonant dialogue for insights. I suspect you'll enjoy LeeAnn's perspective on how we can each make a difference. I suspect you'll enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Key Takeaways LeeAnn's unique perspective on these soul-making times Making the business case for regenerative change How to build your capacity as a leader to reimagine business and inspire regenerative change What it means to shift from sustainability to regeneration; our roles and responsibilities The connections between deep inner change and outer systemic transformation Memorable Quote “When we become more authentic, more of who we actually are… perhaps that is the key to what our true and deepest impact could be?”—LeeAnn Mallorie Episode Resources: http://www.gutsandgrace.com/ (Guts & Grace Website) http://thememesummit.com/ (The Meme Project) https://amzn.to/3sfP8Cs (BOOK: Ministry Of The Future by Kim Stanley Robinson) http://sacredchangemakers.com/ (SacredChangemakers.com) https://sacredchangemakers.com/community (Our Sacred Community) https://www.instagram.com/jayne_m_warrilow/?hl=en (Jayne Warrilow on Instagram) Thank you to our sponsor: A HUGE thank you to our sponsor Coaches Business School who are helping coaches to succeed in business, so they can make a meaningful difference in our world. The club was named after the Pegu, a Burmese river.” According to David Wondrich “We're not sure precisely when it was invented, but it had to be before 1927, when it turns up in Harry MacElhone's Barflies and Cocktails.” That book has been re-released with a forward written by Mr. Wondrich. This is David Wondrich’s recipe from Esquire.com 2 ounces gin – Frey Ranch dry gin. 3/4 ounce orange curacao - I used Mandarin Napoleon 3/4 ounce lime juice 1 dash Bitters -- Angostura bitters 1 dash orange bitters.
