In this episode, I talked today with Rick Smolan about his journey as a photojournalist and storyteller over the years and how he has navigated creating his own creative work and companies.Rick has so many interesting stories and talks about how saying 'yes' to opportunities as a young adult opened a lot of doors for him in the photography industry. He also talks about how he remained optimistic and hopeful and loved to let experiences unfold in front of him. The uncertainty and the surprises that come with not knowing what was going to happen next kept him interested and excited about his work. Rick suggests to people earlier on in their careers to find something they deeply care about and that they feel self motivated with.Rick's notable book Tracks is available on Amazon and was also turned into a feature film. The photographs in the book are stunning and really capture the raw experience of Robyn Davidson's solo trek across the Outback in Australia.Consider checking out the Passion and Purpose program if you are looking to make a career transition into more purposeful work or have been sitting on a business idea that you want to launch: https://www.free-to-flourish.com/passionandpurposeTo book a call to learn more about the program:https://calendly.com/rachel-freetoflourish/q-a?month=2022-08Stay in the loop and receive tips, tools, and stories around positive psychology! Slightly over 40 years ago, photographer Rick Smolan convened 100 of the world's best photographers to photograph 24 hours in Australia – an audacious and self-published effort which yielded the first in a series of massively successful photo coffee table books under the "A Day in the Life" moniker. The intricacies and logistics of producing the books are only eclipsed by the life experiences that led Smolan to embark on the project, and continue to inform his activities as a photographer, author, and speaker. In this episode of Vision Slightly Blurred, Sarah and Allen interview Smolan and even get him to share his thoughts about NFTs.
Rick Smolan has lived a life traveling around the world documenting with his camera for National Geographic, Time, and Life magazines. He famously photographed Robyn Davidson on her 1,700 solo trek across the Australian desert with four camels and a dog in 1977 which earned a cover story on National Geographic, became a best selling book with Rick's photos, and was turned into a movie called Tracks with Adam Driver playing Rick in the movie. Listen to Rick Smolan talk about being a photo journalist and photographer and share gems from his life.
In 1977, Robyn Davidson set off from Alice Springs for the Indian Ocean on the west coast of Australia, with a dog and four camels, Dookie (a large male), Bub (a smaller male), Zeleika (a wild female), and Goliath (Zeleika's offspring). She had no intention of writing about the journey, but eventually agreed to write an article for the magazine National Geographic. Having met the photographer Rick Smolan in Alice Springs, he insisted that he be the photographer for the journey. She walked over 1700 miles in 9 months.Tracks is a 2013 Australian drama film directed by John Curran and starring Mia Wasikowska and Adam Driver. It is an adaptation of Robyn Davidson's memoir of the same name, chronicling the author's nine-month journey on camels across the Australian desert.
Rick's career spans amazing gigs at Time, LIFE and National Geographic; he's been played on the silver screen by Adam Driver, and his creative Day in the Life projects have touched millions. He's also the guy who convinced me to move into digital from film (and get a Fujifilm camera --even though he talks about his Sony today...).
Rick Smolan is a New York Times best-selling author and former Time, Life and National Geographic photographer, best known as co-creator of the Day in the Life book series. He returns to ideacity to discuss his new book "The Good Fight: America's Ongoing Struggle for Justice".
Presented by Kathmandu We open the festival with an incredible speaker who perfectly embodies our adventurous theme. At the age of 27, Robyn Davidson walked 2700 kilometres alone across the Australian desert, with a dog and four camels. She became instantly famous and then she wrote Tracks – an international best-seller, published in 20 languages, never out of print and made into a Hollywood feature film in 2013. That success launched an extraordinary career as a writer, explorer, filmmaker and cultural commentator. Davidson will relive the journey of Tracks, and what she learned from it, in a keynote address accompanied by breath-taking images from Rick Smolan, the National Geographic photographer who followed her on part of the adventure. Be inspired to take a few more risks and invite adventure into your life.
From 2008: I love great photographs. I suspect I’m the audience that photographer Rick Smolan and his wife and partner Jennifer Erwitt envision when they create new coffee table photography books, such as their latest: "America At Home: A Close-Up Look at How We Live." This is the latest high quality project from the team that also produced A Day in the Life of America and America 24/7.
