Continuing what has become a series on Czechoslovak Socialism, we dive into the attempt to reform the Czechoslovak system. The official ML narrative and the liberal narrative about the Prague Spring are the same, they say that it was an attempt to re-establish bourgeois democracy. However, it seems clear that the intentions of its participants were the opposite. They appear to have been a genuine attempt to revitalize and push forward the communist project. The Action Programme of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakiahttps://www.marxists.org/subject/czech/1968/action-programme.htmStoneman, Anna J. “Socialism With a Human Face: The Leadership and Legacy of the Prague Spring.” The History Teacher49, no. 1 (2015): 103–25. Conspiracy abounds in this episode! We consider the not-so-secret breeding programs of the elite, who have for centuries manipulated the very laws of genetics themselves to produce ... cuddly-wuddly faces that you could JUST PINCH AND PINCH AND PINCH UNTIL THEY HAUL YOU AWAYYY Yes. This episode is about dogs. Specifically, America's newest number One dog — the French Bulldog. The Frenchie toppling the 31-year-reign of the Labrador Retriever received the kind of media treatment you'd imagine, a lot of it with the ALL-CAPS enthusiasm of the American Kennel Club's own press release (stop yelling, jeez). But look closely and you'll see everyone dancing, lightly or not, over the wheezing, snoring facts of overbreeding.  Not us, though. We look the uncomfortable truth of designer breeding right in its eerily human eyes and wonder whether we're trying to build a better Good Boy ... or letting our hubris carry us where even nature knows better than to go. Digital Transformation is going to continue being a huge force in business, but the way it's being done is changing. People, not tech tools, are the new priority. Listen to this episode to learn how to make the most of this opportunity. Learning notes from this episode: Global digital transformation spending is forecast to reach $3.4 trillion by 2026, from around 1.6 trillion today, according to Statista, This high growth means opportunity for corporate leaders, entrepreneurs and investors. When companies first attempted digital transformation efforts, the emphasis was on implementing new tools. These transformation efforts were usually led by the Chief Technology Officer or Chief Innovation Officer, with the rest of the organisation often able to ignore this change. While some of these efforts were successful, a lot of money was wasted. McKinsey estimates that 70% of digital transformation programmes fail to meet their goals. This is why, digital transformation efforts in 2023 and beyond will focus on putting people first, and tools second. By first educating the entire workforce and updating traditional business thinking to digital mindsets, organisations will be able to reap the benefits of the tools they implement. Because Digital Transformation 2.0 is people first, tools second, there is demand for a new type of employee: a person who speaks tech and speaks business. People with this dual business and tech skillset of are the people who are going to lead in the Digital Age. On this episode, Lera speaks with Emily Joan Elliott of H-Net about what got her interested in Soviet and post-Soviet history and her particular focus on migration to Moscow and the Priemnaia (reception desk) of the Supreme Soviet. Per Elliott's research: "the Priemnaia received thousands of complaints and petitions annually, often from individuals or groups who argued that local soviets or enterprises failed to deliver on various aspects of their material wellbeing, including housing. But the Priemnaia also provided a place for these petitioners to voice their concerns and plead for the state to intercede on their behalf... Although the Soviet bureaucracy was a behemoth, the Priemnaia provided its citizens with direct means of engagement with government officials, cutting through red tape, and improving their material wellbeing." Thanks for listening! ABOUT THE GUEST Hailing from New York, Dr. Emily Joan Elliott is the associate director for research and publications at H-Net (https://www.h-net.org/). She received her PhD in Soviet and post-Soviet history from Michigan State University in 2019. After earning her degree, she pursued opportunities both inside and outside the academy. She has taught a broad array of courses, including the history of Russia, the Soviet Union, modern Europe, socialism, and migration. Outside the academy, she has worked as a freelance researcher and as the Special Sections Editor for the Historical Society of Michigan's magazines. She continued her foray into journalism as a reporter and then as the Managing Editor for East Lansing Info. In that role, she reported on a variety of topics, ranging from East Lansing Public Schools, Covid-19, and community disparities. James Woodward is a recently retired Professor from the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh. Jim has tremendously influenced the field of causal explanation in the philosophy of science. His account of causation centers around intervention - intervening on a cause should alter its effect. From this minimal notion, Jim has described many facets and varieties of causal structures. In this episode, we discuss topics from his recent book, Causation with a Human Face: Normative Theory and Descriptive Psychology. In the book, Jim advocates that how we should think about causality - the normative - needs to be studied together with how we actually do think about causal relations in the world - the descriptive. We discuss many topics around this central notion, epistemology versus metaphysics, the the nature and varieties of causal structures.
