Biography Early life and family background Ahmed Salman Rushdie was born in Bombay on 19 June 1947 during the British Raj, into an Indian Kashmiri Muslim family. He is the son of Anis Ahmed Rushdie, a Cambridge-educated lawyer-turned-businessman, and Negin Bhatt, a teacher. Anis Ahmed Rushdie was dismissed from the Indian Civil Services (ICS) after it emerged that the birth certificate submitted by him had changes to make him appear younger than he was. Rushdie has three sisters. He wrote in his 2012 memoir that his father adopted the name Rushdie in honour of Averroes (Ibn Rushd). Rushdie grew up in Bombay and was educated at the Cathedral and John Connon School in Fort, South Bombay before moving to England from India to attend the Rugby School in Rugby, Warwickshire, and then King's College, Cambridge, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. After graduating from Cambridge, Rushdie briefly lived with his family in Pakistan (who had moved there from Bombay, India), before moving permanently to the UK. Personal life Rushdie has been married four times. He was married to his first wife, Clarissa Luard from 1976 to 1987 and fathered a son, Zafar (born 1979) who is married to the London-based jazz singer Natalie Rushdie. He left her in the mid-'80s for the Australian writer Robyn Davidson, to whom he was introduced by their mutual friend Bruce Chatwin. His second wife was the American novelist Marianne Wiggins; they were married in 1988 and divorced in 1993. His third wife, from 1997 to 2004, was Elizabeth West; they have a son, Milan (born 1997). In 2004, he married Padma Lakshmi, an Indian-American actress, model, and host of the American reality-television show Top Chef. The marriage ended in 2007. In 1999, Rushdie had an operation to correct ptosis, a problem with the levator palpebrae superioris muscle that causes drooping of the upper eyelid. According to Rushdie, it made it increasingly difficult for him to open his eyes. "If I hadn't had an operation, in a couple of years from now I wouldn't have been able to open my eyes at all," he said. Since 2000, Rushdie has lived in the United States, mostly near Union Square in Lower Manhattan, New York City. He is a fan of the English football club Tottenham Hotspur. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salman_Rushdie

He also talks about how he remained optimistic and hopeful and loved to let experiences unfold in front of him. The uncertainty and the surprises that come with not knowing what was going to happen next kept him interested and excited about his work. Rick suggests to people earlier on in their careers to find something they deeply care about and that they feel self motivated with.Rick's notable book Tracks is available on Amazon and was also turned into a feature film. The photographs in the book are stunning and really capture the raw experience of Robyn Davidson's solo trek across the Outback in Australia.Consider checking out the Passion and Purpose program if you are looking to make a career transition into more purposeful work or have been sitting on a business idea that you want to launch: https://www.free-to-flourish.com/passionandpurposeTo book a call to learn more about the program:https://calendly.com/rachel-freetoflourish/q-a?month=2022-08Stay in the loop and receive tips, tools, and stories around positive psychology! In 1977, Robyn Davidson set off from Alice Springs for the Indian Ocean on the west coast of Australia, with a dog and four camels, Dookie (a large male), Bub (a smaller male), Zeleika (a wild female), and Goliath (Zeleika's offspring). She had no intention of writing about the journey, but eventually agreed to write an article for the magazine National Geographic. Having met the photographer Rick Smolan in Alice Springs, he insisted that he be the photographer for the journey. She walked over 1700 miles in 9 months.Tracks is a 2013 Australian drama film directed by John Curran and starring Mia Wasikowska and Adam Driver. It is an adaptation of Robyn Davidson's memoir of the same name, chronicling the author's nine-month journey on camels across the Australian desert.

Today, Trish is talking with writer and casual adventurer, Kristin Warkentin, about Robyn Davidson’s travel memoir, Tracks. Davidson moved to Alice Springs in 1975 when she was in her early 20s with a dream to walk from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean on the west coast of Australia with some camels and her dear dog, Diggity. For two years she worked with camels and learned how to survive in the harsh desert, then started walking. In the book, Robyn writes about the Aboriginal Land Rights movement, language preservation, eschewing modern feminine standards to be a naked lady bleeding it out in the desert, and like, a lot, about camels. Robyn Davidson is best known as ‘the camel lady’—a reference to her journey as a young woman crossing the Australian desert with four camels and her dog in 1977. Today, Robyn feels like a different person, yet there’s one quality that has remained a constant in her life: her ability to adapt to change. Robyn sat down in front of a live audience at The School of Life with our publisher, Berry Liberman, to talk about adaptability—and how to embrace the flux that is ever present in our lives. Show notes: Thank you to the School of Life for co-hosting this event with us. This edited conversation was produced by our digital editor Lizzie Marton. The music featured is by Dennis Liu.

For Kate's most recent book club we set off for the high Himalayas in search of snow leopards and spiritual enlightenment with Peter Matthiessen's cult classic. But what did we make of it? Is it a 'man's book'? And did it make for good debate? Meanwhile our regular interview feature sees us in Paris interviewing Morgan Thomas of The American Library about his Proust book club. We end with the usual round of recommendations for your next book club read. Our bookseller recommendation for this episode comes from Joe Hedinger of The Book Hive in Norwich. • Follow us on Instagram and Facebook @bookclubreviewpodcast. This week Leonard and Baron discuss three movies based on True-Life Stories: the 2013 drama Tracks starring Mia Wasikowska (an adaptation of Robyn Davidson's memoir of the same name), a musical biopic told in an unconventional way, and Bobcat Goldthwait's documentary Call Me Lucky which chronicles the life and work of comedian/activist Barry Crimmins which you should definitely seek out.
