In this Better Satellite World podcast series, we ask the question: “What would you do if you had the power to make the world a better place during your career?” Joining SSPI's Lou Zacharilla to answer that question in the fifth episode are 3 members of the “20 Under 35” cohort of 2023: Neha Lin, Space Systems Engineer at Iridum, Armando Loli, Project Engineer at Boeing and Asad Malik, Founder, Chairman and CEO of iRocket. Neha Lin is a Space Systems Engineer at Iridium. She joined the company in 2017 as a Satellite Payload Computer Engineer, during a pivotal time when Iridium had just begun retiring its older satellites and launching Iridium NEXT satellites with entirely new payload hardware and software, as well as hosted services. As soon as she took on this role, Neha was confronted with a multitude of challenges with on-orbit payload hardware and software issues and integrating the new satellites into the existing Iridium satellite constellation without disrupting service for customers. She investigated each issue and developed appropriate responses and procedures to minimize service impact. Neha also actively guided the Operations team in efforts to recover the computers with as little disruption as possible. Before joining Iridium, Neha began her career as a Reliability Test Engineer at Microchip Corp., where she carried out rigorous flash endurance cycles on PIC microcontrollers. She transitioned into a role as an RTL Design Engineer at Microchip Corp. before moving on to join Iridium. Armando Loli is a Project Engineer at Boeing. He joined the company initially as an Industrial Engineer, a role in which he supported F-15, F/A-18 and 777x aircraft. From there, Armando transferred to Kennedy Space Center to work on Boeing's Starliner Crewed Spacecraft. He was selected as a key member of the Pad Team that assists NASA astronauts into the Crew Module on Launch Day and also granted security clearances to help integrate Production Engineering initiatives across Boeing's entire Space and Launch portfolio. In his current position, Armando developed the requirements and initial design for a Spacecraft Production System Digital Model/Twin and demonstrated optimized build flows and flexible scaling to meet different build rate scenarios. He is currently managing 3 major projects for Boeing's Space Production, Test, Launch and Recovery Engineering Core Team. While working at Boeing, Armando created and now manages an initial Immersive Development Center for the company's space programs that provides Mixed Reality technologies, which help with manufacturing, production, test and operations. Asad Malik is the Founder, Chairman and CEO of iRocket. He founded iRocket at the age of 28 with the vision of bridging the “digital divide” by launching satellites designed to enhance 5G high-speed Internet access, autonomous vehicles, telemedicine and online education. The company's slogan, “Launch More. Wait Less,” articulates its commitment to providing low-cost, responsive launches with a fully reusable launch vehicle powered by clean, sustainable propellants. iRocket also plans to provide point-to-point cargo delivery services, which can be used for national security and humanitarian missions, such as those dealing with natural disasters. Asad is a graduate of the Tandon School of Engineering at New York University with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He worked at M&J Engineering Group, a diversified provider of engineering, environmental, construction and technology services, for 12 years, eventually serving as Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. While working at M&J, Asad developed MARQUS, an FEA error-checking and design optimization tool for submarine hull structure design, and helped deliver $2 billion in constructed value projects for the Department of Defense with exceptional CPARS ratings. Asad still serves on the Board of Directors at M&J while leading iRocket today. In 2020, he was accepted into the NYU Stern Accelerator Endless Frontiers Lab (EFL) and was part of its Deep Tech Cohort. EFL works with high-growth start-ups that employ innovations in technology and life sciences with the goal of having societal impact through science and technology.

Dr. Steve Koonin, Obama's appointee as Undersecretary for Science at the U.S. Department of Energy, joins Jacki to discuss his new book, Unsettled:  What Climate Science Tells Us, What It Doesn't, and Why It Matters.  Koonin dispels fear with facts as he reviews the most current climate science to show that the future is far better than the prevailing narrative suggests.  With more than 200 peer-reviewed papers in relevant scientific disciplines, Dr. Koonin was a professor of theoretical physics and Caltech and now is a professor at New York University with appointments in the Department of Physics, Tandon School of Engineering, and the Stern Business School.  If your friends or family are experiencing fear or anxiety about their climate future, this book is for them! Next, Jacki is joined by Brigham McCown, CEO of Alyeska Pipeline, supplying the U.S. west coast with the energy it needs to survive.  McCown fact checks the false narratives of fringe media suggesting that climate change is creating challenges to pipelines, which could sink into the permafrost.  Jacki and Brigham unpack the uninformed claims and give the true safety record of Alaska's famous pipeline which is soon to celebrate 45 years of safe operation. Pipelines are safe and green.  Consider that trains transport hazardous materials safely about 99.997% of the time, and pipelines are about 50% safer than rail, with only a small fraction of the pollution by comparison.  Mr. McCown is the former Acting Director of the Pipelines and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration and is a retired naval aviator.  Then, Jacki is joined by Don Huffines, the businessman and former Texas State Senator who is running to unseat Texas Governor Greg Abbott.  Huffines discusses the problems with ERCOT, the breakdown of the rule of law at our border – a problem for the entire country – and what leadership requires in times of uncertainty, such as when a virus strikes, and a governor must show the proper respect for both public health  - and freedom.  Texas shut down during the pandemic, unnecessarily devastating the oil patch and small business.  Huffines has other ideas.  We at The Jacki Daily Show are looking forward to watching this contest unfold! Our friends at Glenn Beck's Mercury One rose to the occasion in Afghanistan, saving 5,100 desperate people who fled for their lives. If you would like to help, consider Mercury One which works to “liberate the captive, to free the enslaved, and to rescue, rebuild and restore the lives of Christians and other persecuted religious and ethnic minorities wherever and whenever they are in need.” Visit MercuryOne.org for more information. From Homer to Helen Keller, from Dune to Stevie Wonder, from the invention of Braille to the science of echolocation. What is the common thread between them? In this stunningly personal and informative presentation, writer and educator M. Leona Godin explored the fascinating history of blindness, interweaving it with her own story of gradually losing her sight. In conversation with blind author and illustrator Keith Rosson, and based on her book There Plant Eyes: A Personal and Cultural History of Blindness, Godin probed the ways in which blindness has shaped our ocularcentric culture, challenging deeply ingrained ideas about what it means to be “blind.” They explored the history of blindness being used to signify such things as thoughtlessness, irrationality, and unconsciousness, while at the same time blind people have been othered as the recipients of special powers as compensation for lost sight. With insight from her own life as a person who began losing her vision at age 10, Godin illuminated the often surprising history of both the condition of blindness and the myths and ideas that have grown up around it. Don't miss this important and enlightening discussion that reveals just how essential blindness and vision are to humanity's understanding of itself and the world. M. Leona Godin is a writer, performer, and educator who is blind. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times; Playboy; O, The Oprah Magazine; and Catapult, where she writes the column, “A Blind Writer's Notebook.” She was a 2019 Logan Nonfiction Fellow and has written and produced two theatrical productions: The Star of Happiness and The Spectator & the Blind Man. She founded the online magazine Aromatica Poetica as a venue for exploring the arts and sciences of smell and taste; not specifically for, but welcoming to, blind readers and writers. She has lectured on art, accessibility, disability, and technology at NYU's Tandon School of Engineering, Rice University, and the American Printing House for the Blind, among other venues. A 15-billion-dollar lawsuit has hit the Biden Administration after it cancelled the Keystone XL Pipeline. The Canadian developer claims massive damages from the reversal of the Trump policy to finish the pipeline… which was a reversal of the Obama policy. After more than eight years of study and hundreds of meetings with state, local, tribal, and federal officials, the developers had their contracts destroyed when Biden killed what was the most advanced and safely designed pipeline to date; the pipeline would have delivered crude with a tiny fraction of the carbon emissions of the alternatives (Buffet's crude-by-rail or crude-by-truck). Pipelines have a safety record that is 50% better than crude-by-rail, which delivers hazardous materials safely from point A to point B literally 99.9% of the time. Is the pipeline cancellation really about the environment and safety? Or a continuation of killing U.S. energy security? Climate change is real, and mankind plays a role, but is this a problem? Will climate change bring economic disaster? Is it an existential threat? Resoundingly “No,” according to Steven Koonin, the former Undersecretary of Science in the Obama administration's Department of Energy. He recently released Jacki's favorite new book, “Unsettled: What Climate Science Tells Us, What It Doesn't, and Why It Matters." Koonin proves that sea levels are not surging, and that hurricanes and tornadoes have not become fierce and more frequent. Koonin is the author of more than 200 peer-reviewed articles in physics and climate science, and a professor of theoretical physics at NYU's Department of Physics, Tandon School of Engineering, and the Stern Business School. Jacki highly recommends this book. Can the judicial branch bend the executive branch to its will? Yes. “Sue and Settle” is back. When fringe elements of an activist movement cannot get their way legislatively - through the people's representatives - they forum shop for judges sympathetic to their cause.  Activists sue friendlies inside the Biden administration … who then settle. This is an end run around the legislatures and a clear violation of our federal government's separation of powers, with judges usurping the legislature's lawmaking function. It is the judiciary's job to say what the law is - not what it should be.    Then, Jacki talks with Chris Wright, CEO of Liberty Oilfield Services, a large hydraulic fracturing (“frac'ing”) company, whose ESG report is one of the few that properly gives credit to the oil and gas industry for lifting people all over the world out of poverty. Liberty's ESG report should be a model for all oil and gas companies. Finally, Jacki discusses cybersecurity with Morgan Luttrell, retired Navy SEAL who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Luttrell is running for Congress in Texas, and they talk about how hostile nations can mount a cyber corps to attack the vulnerable economic underbelly of the United States.

Prominent politicians and the media have long stated that the science behind climate change is settled. However, in his new book “Unsettled: What Climate Science Tells Us, What It Doesn’t, and Why It Matters,” Obama administration scientist Dr. Steve Koonin dispels a number of misleading claims surrounding the climate change debate.   On this episode, Dr. Koonin joins Dany and Marc to give his politics-free take. He reviews US government and UN climate assessments, explaining that the facts do not support climate change hysteria. While Dr. Koonin agrees that the climate is changing, he points out that the why and how are not as clear as you’ve likely been led to believe. Anne-Laure Fayard, associate professor at NYU’s Tandon School of Engineering, was studying the effects of workplace design on employees long before the Covid-19 crisis. Now, she says, the trend of flexible schedules and hybrid offices - where some people come in, others work from home, and many do both - is here to stay. This means that businesses need to reimagine offices as places built less for individual knowledge work than for learning, collaboration, and culture-building. Fayard is the coauthor of the HBR article "Designing the Hybrid Office."

Today’s episode is with conceptual and multimedia installation artist, Kenseth Armstead. Born and raised in Washington DC, Kenseth found his artistic path in high school at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, later receiving his Bachelors of Fine Arts from the Corcoran College of Art & Design and his Masters in Integrated Digital Media from the Tandon School of Engineering at NYU. With a career spanning over three decades, his provocative works centralize history, American culture, and the complex narratives embedded in ethnicity. His multimedia public art installations are deliberately in dialogue with the communities in which they reside. Nestled in his large scale, at-times architectural works, are themes around the black imagination, social justice, abolition, redemption, freedom and change. He was also recently named to the Public Design Commission in New York City.  Although Kenseth is known for his independent installations, he actually started his career in collaborative work with X-PRZ, an art band which included his mentor Tony Cokes, along with artists Doug Anderson and Mark Pierson. This avant garde group was dedicated to using music, video, and other ephemera to critique culture and existing social norms, especially as it pertained to art world notions of individual genius and critical theory. Kenseth’s most recent public artwork, Boulevard of African Monarchs, connects the hub of African excellence in America,(Harlem, USA) to the royal court of the Kassena people of Tiebele, Burkina Faso. It’s on display until August of 2021 at the intersection 116th Street & Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd in Harlem. Kenseth is a prodigious scholar and we cover a LOT of ground. In this episode we discuss his 30/30/30 formula for consistent artistic production, the link between Chistianity and social media, the role time plays in criticism, and what community engagement in art really looks like. Kenseth’s portfolio is extensive, immersive and influential. His work has infiltrated the streets of New York for decades with projects and installations that focus on creating images and cultural activities that aim to close the gulf of space and time between African and African-American identity, communication and social ritual. Recorded remotely and safely, it is with great pleasure that I introduce Kenseth Armstead to the IBI Podcast. Here are some highlights: On his 30/30/30 formula: “I’ve had this rule about 30-30-30 so roughly I’m splitting my time 30 percent production, 30 percent marketing, and it’s like you realize like the 30% when you’re making work is not separate from the 30% when you’re marketing the work or the 30% when you’re doing administrative work these are not separate concepts they are all apart of this flow.” On Media: “If you took in all media and you watched television for 24 hours and you didn’t have a way to be critical about it, you would commit suicide because you don’t have the car that they are trying to sell you, you don’t have the house, you don’t have the money. And if you had the money you would never have enough, you’re not tall enough, you’re not short enough, you’re not this, you’re not that, it’s all about what you’re not!”  On community engagement: “When you’re the youngest of 8 you don’t even ever get your own fresh pair of underwear, everything is a hammy down. So I’ve always been in a group in a sense so that’s natural to me, but actually naturally I’m an introvert, naturally alone, and reading. But then in order to cope with life, you build an extrovert persona and they’re pure sort of narcissists who really feed on community and so Bill Clinton would be a pure narcissist who feeds on crowds. Obama would be someone like myself who’s an introvert but can be an extrovert and so there is a cost. In the piece I did in Central Park, I think I talked to 600 people directly in one day but then after that, I don’t want to talk to people for days because it’s a lot, it’s a lot Support this podcast

Loianno runs the Agile Robotics and Perception Lab (ARPL), a lab that is heavily involved in fundamental and applied research as it pertains to robotics autonomy. Their work is primarily focused on the creation of agile autonomous machines that can navigate independently using nothing more than onboard sensors in unstructured, and dynamically altering environments, without GPS or motion capture, etc. The researchers seek to refine and develop further, active machines that can collaborate with humans and with each other, and perform at an optimum level in unknown environments.   Loianno discusses eye-tracking glasses and the control of drones with the eye. He explains the benefits of eye tracking, and how it can make drone use easier and smoother. He states that this technology is non-invasive and exceptionally easy to use. While this technology is early-stage, Loianno is hopeful that new computer vision algorithms will help further their development. As he explains, gesture and voice interaction can also be utilized to better control the drones and improve robotic development.    The applied engineering expert talks about some of their current trials and the new data they are gathering to further technological development. He envisions a complete framework that will incorporate multiple robots for control by a single user, then multiple users. Ultimately, these machines will be able to improve human work, in our environment and even in space, performing advance work that will inform humans about unknown environments, safety issues, and so much more.    Loianno discusses how line of sight control can be switched to camera control when drones are out of range. And he answers specific questions regarding the complexities of line of sight issues. Loianno discusses the necessary training that users will need to control the technology in various environments. As he states, one of the greatest attributes of this tech is the interaction with humans… in that, the robotic drones can perform analyses and relay the information in real time to the human partner, for various tasks.
