fWotD Episode 2854: Roswell incident Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 26 February 2025 is Roswell incident. The Roswell incident is a conspiracy theory which alleges that the 1947 United States Army Air Forces balloon debris recovered near Roswell, New Mexico, was actually a crashed extraterrestrial spacecraft. Operated from the nearby Alamogordo Army Air Field and part of the top secret Project Mogul, the balloon was intended to detect Soviet nuclear tests. After metallic and rubber debris were recovered by Roswell Army Air Field personnel, the United States Army announced their possession of a "flying disc". This announcement made international headlines, but was retracted within a day. To obscure the purpose and source of the debris, the army reported that it was a conventional weather balloon. In 1978, retired Air Force officer Jesse Marcel revealed that the army's weather balloon claim had been a cover story, and speculated that the debris was of extraterrestrial origin. Popularized by the 1980 book The Roswell Incident, this speculation became the basis for long-lasting and increasingly complex and contradictory UFO conspiracy theories, which over time expanded the incident to include governments concealing evidence of extraterrestrial beings, grey aliens, multiple crashed flying saucers, alien corpses and autopsies, and the reverse engineering of extraterrestrial technology, none of which have any factual basis. In the 1990s, the United States Air Force published multiple reports which established that the incident was related to Project Mogul, and not debris from a UFO. Despite this and a general lack of evidence, many UFO proponents claim that the Roswell debris was in fact derived from an alien craft, and accuse the US government of a cover-up. The conspiracy narrative has become a trope in science fiction literature, film, and television. The town of Roswell promotes itself as a destination for UFO-associated tourism. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:29 UTC on Wednesday, 26 February 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Roswell incident on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Joanna.

The Roswell Incident Episode Description: In this episode, we explore one of the most infamous events in UFO history—the Roswell Incident. What started with a mysterious debris discovery on a New Mexico ranch in 1947 quickly spiraled into a media sensation and government cover-up claims. We'll break down the key players, the strange witness accounts, and the birth of modern UFO conspiracy theories. Whether you're a skeptic or a believer, Roswell remains the ultimate mystery in America's fascination with the unknown. Episode Highlights: The Discovery: Introduction to W.W. “Mac” Brazel, the rancher who found strange debris scattered across his property. Description of the debris: rubber strips, foil-like sheets, and sticks—materials that baffled locals and sparked questions. Brazel's decision to report the find to the local sheriff and the Roswell Army Air Field's (RAAF) swift involvement. The Initial Report and Retraction: The RAAF's public announcement that they recovered a “flying disc.” The sudden retraction—just one day later—claiming the debris was from a weather balloon. How the rapid backtrack fueled public suspicion and set the stage for conspiracy theories. Witness Accounts: Eyewitnesses who claimed the debris was unlike anything from Earth. Former military personnel accounts of seeing “alien bodies” with small humanoid figures and large heads. The local mortician's story about the RAAF requesting child-sized caskets and inquiries about preserving bodies exposed to the elements. The Media Frenzy: How the incident became a media circus, with newspapers initially spreading stories about “flying saucers.” The role of television in embedding Roswell into popular culture and shaping public fascination with UFOs. The Government's Changing Narrative: Decades of shifting government explanations, from weather balloons to the secret “Project Mogul” surveillance program. Declassified documents and whistleblower accounts that reignited interest in the 1990s and beyond. Recent Developments: The emergence of UAP (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena) reports and Congressional hearings. Whistleblower claims of non-human materials and secret UAP recovery programs. Don't Miss the Wildest Claims! We close with the strangest stories and modern-day theories surrounding Roswell, from alleged alien autopsies to secret underground bases. Whether fact or fiction, Roswell remains one of the most enduring mysteries of our time.

Come along with the All Things Strange Podcast as we discuss sightings from 1947! You can find all of our wonderful links on the linktree: https://linktr.ee/allts   The 1947 UFO flap, also known as the "flying saucer craze," was a period of intense public interest and media coverage of unidentified flying object (UFO) sightings across the United States. It's considered the defining moment for modern UFO culture and continues to fuel debate and intrigue today. Here are some key features of the 1947 UFO flap: Triggering Event: On June 24, 1947, private pilot Kenneth Arnold reported seeing nine silvery, disc-shaped objects flying near Mount Rainier. He described their movement as "like saucers skipping across water," which quickly became the media's shorthand for UFOs. This highly publicized account sparked a wave of similar reports in following weeks. Peak Frenzy: By July 7, 1947, hundreds of UFO sightings were reported nationwide, with newspapers featuring sensational headlines and eyewitness accounts. The public became captivated by the possibility of extraterrestrial visitors, while authorities scrambled to explain the phenomenon. Roswell Incident: On July 8, 1947, the Roswell Army Air Field in New Mexico reported recovering debris from a crashed "flying disc." While the military initially suggested it was a weather balloon, conflicting statements and secrecy fueled speculation about alien spacecraft and a government cover-up. The Roswell incident remains one of the most enduring UFO mysteries and continues to be actively investigated and debated. Explanations and Skepticism: The Air Force launched Project Blue Book to investigate UFO reports, attributing most encounters to misidentification of mundane objects like balloons, aircraft, or natural phenomena. This sparked criticism from UFO enthusiasts who saw it as a deliberate effort to debunk legitimate sightings. Enduring Legacy: Despite official explanations, the 1947 UFO flap left a lasting mark on American culture. It popularized the concept of flying saucers as alien vehicles, spawned countless books and movies, and fueled public interest in the possibility of extraterrestrial life. Debates and Questions: The events of 1947 continue to be debated, with questions lingering about the true nature of the sightings and the government's response. Whether it was a wave of mass hysteria or genuine encounters with the unknown, the 1947 UFO flap remains a significant historical event and a central piece of the ongoing conversation about extraterrestrial life.

Donald Schmitt was initially skeptical of the truth of the Roswell UFO crash in July 1947, but after interviewing hundreds of eyewitnesses, he became convinced that the incident was genuine and involved an extraterrestrial spacecraft. Eyewitnesses included Walter Haut, the public affairs officer at Roswell Army Air Field, who released the initial news report about the crash of a flying saucer. Haut posthumously confessed that the US Army Air Force had covered up the truth about the extraterrestrial origins of the retrieved craft. Pursuing the investigative trail further, Schmitt discovered that the crashed Roswell spacecraft was taken to Wright Patterson Air Force Base (formerly Wright Field) for secret reverse engineering projects. He explains how reverse engineering of retrieved alien spacecraft has been a top priority and has involved multiple military and corporate entities. Today, Schmitt is lobbying members of the US Congress to hold hearings on the Roswell and other UFO crash retrieval incidents and to disclose the truth to the American public. Donald Schmitt is the co-author of seven best-selling books dealing with UFO crash retrieval incidents and reverse engineering facilities. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/exopolitics/support

The announcement on July 8, 1947 by the intelligence office at Roswell Army Air Field that they had recovered a flying saucer from a ranch in the area quickly faded from the public consciousness after it was announced the next day that what was found was actually a weather balloon. It wasn't until 1978 that the story was resurrected after Stanton Friedman stumbled upon it. After that, it spawned a cottage industry that many people profited from with books, speaking engagements, television appearances, videos and assorted merchandise. The original story of a flying saucer being recovered grew until there were two crash sites, recovered alien bodies, and even a living alien. Much of this is now doubtful as the credibility of the people who made those sorts of claims has been called into question, as is reported in detail on the website, roswellfiles.com. The thing about the Roswell case is, once one piece of testimony or evidence is put into question or totally debunked, someone comes along with “new evidence” that is promised to be “the smoking gun.” Read more →

On a stormy night 75 years ago, something crashed in the desert near Roswell, New Mexico. The military says it was a balloon carrying top-secret instruments for sniffing out atomic-bomb tests in the Soviet Union. But others say it was a flying saucer carrying visitors from another world — the most famous and persistent UFO story to date. Saucer mania gripped the country that summer. Thousands of sightings were reported. And Roswell was a perfect place for a close encounter. Robert Goddard had tested his rockets just outside town during the 1930s. The first atomic bomb was detonated not a hundred miles away, the army was testing V-2 missiles at White Sands, and the local air base housed the world's only atomic-bomb group. The story of the Roswell Incident broke on July 8th, 1947. Roswell Army Air Field issued a press release saying it had recovered a “flying disk” from a ranch near town. The army soon backtracked, saying the disk was nothing more than a weather balloon. The story died, but it didn't rest in peace. Decades later, the base intelligence officer said he really had discovered a flying saucer. He said it was fashioned of a thin, tough metal covered with odd markings. Later versions of the story said investigators had recovered alien bodies, too. It's a great story, but scientists will tell you it's only that — a story — and we'll tell you why tomorrow — on Star Date.  Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

The Crash Near Roswell: An unidentified flying object crashed on a ranch northwest of Roswell, New Mexico, sometime during the first week of July 1947. Rancher W.W. “Mack” Brazel said later he found debris from the crash as he and the son of Floyd and Loretta Proctor rode their horses out to check on sheep after a fierce thunderstorm the night before. Brazel said that as they rode along, he began to notice unusual pieces of what seemed to be metal debris scattered over a large area. Upon further inspection, he said, he saw a shallow trench several hundred feet long had been gouged into the ground. Brazel said he was struck by the unusual properties of the debris and, after dragging large pieces of it to a shed, he took some of it over to show the Proctors. Mrs. Proctor, who later moved from the ranch to a house closer to town, said she remembers Brazel showing up with the strange material. The Proctors told Brazel he might be holding wreckage from an alien spacecraft — a number of UFO sightings had been reported in the United States that summer — or a government project, and that he should report the incident to Chaves County Sheriff George Wilcox. A day or two later, Brazel drove into Roswell, the county seat, and reported the incident to Wilcox, who reported it to Maj. Jesse Marcel, intelligence officer for the 509th Bomb Group, stationed at Roswell Army Air Field. In their book, A History of UFO Crashes, UFO researchers Don Schmitt and Kevin Randle say their research shows military radar had been tracking an unidentified flying object in the skies over southern New Mexico for four days. On the night of July 4, 1947, radar indicated the object had gone down about 30-40 miles northwest of Roswell. The book says eyewitness William Woody, who lived east of Roswell, said he remembered being outside with his father the night of July 4, 1947, when he saw a brilliant object plunge to the ground. The debris site was closed for several days while the wreckage was cleared, and Schmitt and Randle say that when Woody and his father tried to locate the area of the crash they had seen, Woody said they were stopped by military personnel who ordered them out of the area. Episode 86 of the Paranormal Mysteries Podcast:In July 1947, a rancher named “Mac” Brazel found wreckage on his sizable property in Lincoln County. Several “flying disc” and “flying saucer” stories had already appeared in the national press that summer, leading Brazel to believe the wreckage, which included rubber strips, tinfoil, and thick paper, might be something of that ilk. He brought some of the material to Sheriff George Wilcox of Roswell, who in turn brought it to the attention of Colonel William Blanchard, the commanding officer of the Roswell Army Air Field (RAAF).The next day, the RAAF released a statement, writing that, “The many rumors regarding the flying disc became a reality yesterday when the intelligence office of the 509th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force, Roswell Army Air Field, was fortunate enough to gain possession of a disc through the cooperation of one of the local ranchers and the sheriff's office of Chaves County.” According to that statement, Major Jesse Marcel, an intelligence officer, oversaw the RAAF’s investigation of the crash site and the recovered materials. The following day, the Roswell Daily Record ran a story about the crash and the RAAF’s astonishing claim. But U.S. Army officials quickly reversed themselves on the “flying saucer” claim, stating that the found debris was actually from a weather balloon, releasing photographs of Major Marcel posing with pieces of the supposed weather balloon debris as proof. For decades, many UFO researchers were skeptical of the government’s changed account, and in 1994, the U.S. Air Force released a report in which they conceded that the “weather balloon” story had been bogus. According to the 1994 explanation, the wreckage came from a spy device created for an until-then classified project called Project Mogul. The device, a connected string of high-altitude balloons equipped with microphones, was designed to float furtively over the USSR, detecting sound waves at a stealth distance. These balloons would ostensibly monitor the Soviet government’s attempts at testing their own atomic bomb. Because Project Mogul was a covert operation, the new report claimed, a false explanation of the crash was necessary to prevent giving away details of their spy work.Podcast Source:https://www.spreaker.com/show/paranormal-mysteries-podcastContact:Email: paranormalmysteriespodcast@gmail.comWebsite: http://paranormalmysteriespodcast.comSupport The Podcast:Patreon Membership:https://www.patreon.com/join/paranormalmysteries?One-Time Donation:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/paranormalSpecial Thanks to All of Our Wonderful Supporters:Trista, Robin, Marjorie, Clyde, Kathy, Brett, Cassandra, Jan, Sarah F, Skyler, Courtney B, Worsenary, Dave, Kortnie W, Juli, Tiffany, Tom, Stephen, Alysa, Mystica, Carley, Kyriakos, Eunecka, Mary, Andrew, Sarah, Angie, Nick, James S, Molybdenum, Mattie, KA, Collin, James P, Chris, Christy, Buster, Michael, Kim, Amanda, Ivonne, Santiago, Angelo, Jordan, Andrea, Colt, Analyssa, Kasey, Sonia, Kadee, Pam, Christina, Seth, Lisa, Kevin, Breeann, Raymond, Florencia, Katie, Arely, Haze, Stella, Lydia, Shannonlee, Karl, Whitney, T.F., Caleb, Kristin, Jess, Kyle, Valerie, Ashley, Sarah, Ruben, Lara, Kristine, Benjamin, Fenway, Evelyn, Luz, Marjolaine, Olga, Abigail, Kirby, Tia, Lucie, Lesley, Laura, Karen, Someone, Nhimo, Lunico, Aaron, Audrey, Lisa, Patricia, David, Tae, Olga, Kat, Eddie, Anonymous BMC Donator, Johnny, Pam, Lobalug, Kaye, Friendly Local Cryptid, Tana, Von, Marijim, Brian, Mark, Warren, Maria, Questt, Danielle, Joshua, Angela, Heather, Christina, Rudy, Jessica, Ruby, DarioSources referenced in today’s episode:* US National Archives – Roswell Interviews (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbIuTJjGFrk&list=WL&index=6&t=1516s)Social Media:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/paranormalmysteriespodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/paranormalmysteriespodcastTwitter: https://twitter.com/ParaMysteryPod

Episode 85 of the Paranormal Mysteries Podcast:In July 1947, a rancher named “Mac” Brazel found wreckage on his sizable property in Lincoln County. Alien Autopsy? Part 1

Indeed, there is no shortage of debatable evidence and probable hoaxes when it comes to the subject of UFOs and aliens. Yet as with any cultural phenomenon, there are those prime examples that rise to the top to become forever cemented into our collective consciousness. One such artifact is a 17-minute black-and-white film that became so iconic it is merely, and famously known only as "Alien Autopsy."  The film sequence purported to show government or military Medical Examiners performing an autopsy on an alien lifeform supposedly recovered along with debris from an equally famous event, the 1947 Roswell UFO crash.  One could argue that the film has become more well-known than the incident upon which it was supposedly based.  The first public screening of the film occurred on May 5, 1995, in a small theater at the Museum of London.  The organizer of the event who had possession of the film at the time, a music and television producer named Ray Santilli, had invited the Press, UFOlogists, and even clergy members to witness the extraordinary footage to generate buzz and controversy.  Accomplishing both aims, news outlets around the world picked up on the story.  But the biggest sensation sparked on August 28th of that year, when Fox Television aired a documentary Special featuring the footage titled, Alien Autopsy: Fact or Fiction.  The Special was re-broadcast two more times, with each one generating millions of more viewers.  The backstory Santilli stated then was that he purchased the footage from a retired military cameraman who shot the film during the actual autopsy at the Roswell Army Air Field.  However, just before the release of a 2006 British comedy called Alien Autopsy, which dramatized the story of the events surrounding the film, Santilli admitted that the film he and his partner Gary Shoefield released was a recreation of the original footage he acquired in 1992. He claims that in the time he first viewed the 22 original reels and the 1995 release, the film deteriorated so severely that his team needed to recreate the shots based on what he had seen.  But Santilli also insists that they spliced frames from the original footage into the film they released – that an authentic, 1947 autopsy film existed.  But that is his story, and as we all know, there are always more sides to one.  Enter tonight's guest, magician and media producer Spyros Melaris.  Spyros has a convincing story of his own, that he and his friend, sculptor and Special Effects artist John Humphreys created the film and everything seen in it – that there is no authentic autopsy film.  Whatever you may decide after hearing part one of our interview with Spyros, one thing is sure: the Alien Autopsy film captured the imagination of the world and might be one of the greatest hoaxes of all time.  Visit our website for a lot more information on this episode: https://www.astonishinglegends.com/2020/8/23/ep-186-alien-autopsy-part-1 (http://www.astonishinglegends.com/al-podcasts/2019/7/14/ep-149-dan-susan-micah-hanks-and-missing-time)

Denice Marcel is the granddaughter of Jesse Marcel, the intelligence officer at the Roswell Army Air Field in 1947 who was the first person from the military to handle the debris found in the desert outside of Roswell which some believe was an extraterrestrial spacecraft. Denice's father, Jesse Marcel Jr., also handled some of the material, and both Jesse Sr. and Jesse Jr. say that the materials were not merely from weather or test balloons. They both believe the material was not manufactured on this planet. Denice grew up with the Roswell mystery and has been interested in the topic of UFOs her entire life. She has recently accepted the position as the California Mutual UFO Network's Los Angeles section director. We talk to Denice about what it was like growing up in the Marcel family and her new position with MUFON. Visit Los Angeles MUFON at www.MUFONLosAngeles.com.
