The new book, "A History of Basketball in Fifteen Sneakers," is a celebration of the iconic shoes and superstars who have defined the sport for decades. A book for both hoops fans and sneaker obsessives, the history is a fascinating look at the sport written with authority and experience by former Complex and SLAM magazine editor Russ Bengtson.
Russ Bengtson, author of "A History of Basketball in 15 Sneakers."
Russ Bengtson, former editor-in-chief of Slam Magazine, has written a new book that traces the history of some of the most iconic basketball shoes and the stars that wore them. He joins to discuss The History of Basketball in 15 Sneakers and take your calls.
Lang Whitaker and Russ Bengtson look at the only shoe on this list that was originally designed for a movie, the Nike Adapt BB. They look at how the concept of a self-lacing shoe originated in Back to the Future and the journey it took for Nike ideate back in 1985 to release in 2019. They explore why it took 34 years to create and the impact it has made on the sneaker industry.
Lang Whitaker and Russ Bengtson explore the penultimate shoe on their list, the Under Armour Curry One. Under Armour and Steph Curry shared a similar journey of Under Armour as they both started out overlooked and underrated but quickly redefined the game and left an indelible mark on sneaker culture.
Russ Bengtson @russbengtson has a long resume in sneaker journalism and collecting, and he still remembers visiting Supreme five times in one week back in 2002 until he got a pair of Nike SB Dunk Low Black Cements. He's still got the box and receipt, but doesn't want to talk about what they're worth. On the latest episode of SneakerDads, Russ shares stories about the boxes of samples sent from Nike, discusses why you don't need to own every sneaker that releases, talks about his book: A History of Basketball in Fifteen Sneakers, and much more. Host: Jon Ratner @headzaintredee @sneakerdads Beats: Chili Banks
Russ Bengtson, author of A History of Basketball in Fifteen Sneakers, joins Vincent Goodwill to talk about some of the most famous basketball sneakers, why sneaker promotion has changed so dramatically, and what sneakers fans should be buying today.00:00 - Introduction03:45 - A History of Basketball in 15 Sneakers19:45 - Air Jordan33:00 - Modern basketball sneakers50:00 - Sneaker cultureOn this episode of the Good Word with Goodwill podcast, longtime sneaker expert Russ Bengtson stops by to talk about his new book: A History of Basketball in Fifteen Sneakers. Before they get to the shoes, Vince talks with Russ about his time as the editor-in-chief at SLAM Magazine and what SLAM meant to basketball in the 90s and 00s. The guys then dive into Russ' process. How did he settle on these 15 sneakers? Are there any that he had to leave out? Was he always planning on talking about 15? What was most important to Russ was using the sneakers to talk about the full history of basketball without any big gaps, so that the book can be equal parts about the shoes and the game. One of the things that Russ and Vince both miss is the big promotional pieces, posters and TV commercials, that the big shoe makers used to use to hype up a shoe and promote the star player. They talk a bit about what happened to that model and if it will ever come back.Air Jordan, of course, changed the basketball shoe game and hasn't really let go of it since launching. Russ explains why it had to be Michael Jordan as the one to change the shoe game, why it couldn't have been Magic Johnson or Larry Bird, and what it has meant for every other shoe manufacturer since. Finally, Vince and Russ talk about current basketball sneakers. The ones coming out now, signature shoes for young players that are still in the league, and why consumers should be buying them instead of getting in line for retro or classic shoes from 30-40 years ago.Check out the rest of the Yahoo Sports podcast family at https://apple.co/3zEuTQj or at Yahoo Sports PodcastsSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

RUSS BENGTSON is an iconic chronicler of all things NBA and sneakers. Which is why he's launching a new podcast about Michael Jordan to coincide with the new ESPN doc. But let's shift our focus from his feet to his wrists. Russ collects and cherishes watches. Vintage. Historic. Stylish. Colorful. Space-Tested. Russ opens up about his personal passion points with watches, plus how the simple gesture of winding a watch has made the Great Quarantine a tad bit easier. Then ... Gareth & Brad veer into 90s nostalgia by laying out our all-90s mix tapes. Inspiring, and embarrassing. I mean, the Toadies and Rusted Root are part of this. No apologies. This week on A Waste of Time with ItsTheReal we welcome NBA/sneaker/hip-hop writer, editor, commentator and confidant Russ Bengtson to the Upper West Side! Russ talks growing up in Long Island, his early interest in journalism, being a Chicago Bulls fan in New York, attending the University of Delaware, his classmate and fellow journalist Jeff Pearlman, and his first job out of college working for a tiny newspaper in rural Pennsylvania where he was hands-on in every aspect of the publication. We discuss how SLAM Magazine reached out to him, what exactly "Senior Editor" meant, his early dealings with Clyde Drexler, Scottie Pippin and Charles Barkley, JR Rider being cut from the Hawks before an interview, Kobe Bryant's respecting SLAM over other publications, Allen Iverson's magnetism, Stephon Marbury's unbelievable heart and talent, connecting Kevin Garnett and Jonathan Mannion for a legendary photo shoot, and the good and bad realities of choosing a magazine cover months ahead of time. Russ gets into his time as Editor in Chief of SLAM, his great partner in crime Lang Whitaker, in what ways Shaq and Nigel Sylvester are similar, Patrick Ewing not acknowledging him for two years, SLAM's reputation according to beat writers as opposed to enthusiasts, and why his time at the publication came to an end. We cover his freelance days, his introduction to Complex, the early days of Twitter, how page views and traffic changed the way writing worked, where Quickstrike - his sneaker show with Clark Kent - succeeded and where it missed opportunities, and his new documentary with Complex, Sole Origins. All that, plus stories about Pig Miller, Rasheed Wallace, Mobb Deep, Gregg Popovich, getting robbed on his apartment's front steps, University of Delaware's short time in the NCAA tourney, his Twitter block list, his love of heavy metal and much more! For basketball fans in the 1980s, Superman was redundant. Christopher Reeve’s portrayal of the DC superhero depicted him saving the world, taking down General Zod, and even teaming up with Richard Pryor through a short series of films, and largely depended on strings and special effects to make us all believe a man could fly. Then Michael Jordan turned fiction into reality. During his rookie 1984-1985 season with the Chicago Bulls, his dynamic style of play revolutionized the game, and turned supporters of rival teams into instant fans, who voted him into that season’s All-Star Game, much to the chagrin of veteran players like Isiah Thomas. Michael Jordan is a real-life Superman. His super suits are much cooler—no one can deny the timeless appeal of the red-and-black Bulls kits. And of course, Superman’s red boots don’t hold a candle to Jordan’s signature sneakers: the Air Jordan 1, which debuted on September 15, 1985, at a retail price of $65. In the inaugural episode of our Why It's Cool podcast, host Jian DeLeon speaks to several industry figures who explain the lasting impact of the simple sneaker. From its origins as a signature sneaker to the on-court and off-court mythology that it led to, the Jordan 1 is a timeless shoe that continues to be reinterpreted today. First up, Jordan 1 designer Peter Moore talks about the intent of the design, and wanting to create a silhouette that could show off as much color as possible. Then writer Russ Bengtson—a wealth of knowledge on the intersection between sneaker culture and basketball—sheds some light on the Jordan 1's second life as a skate sneaker. David Creech, VP of Design at Jordan Brand, speaks on the fashion world's homages to the Jordan 1, and how collaborations with modern creatives like Virgil Abloh help tell new stories that extend the shoe's legacy beyond Michael Jordan's feats on the basketball court. Listen to the full episode above, and stay tuned for more episodes of “Why It's Cool” each week. Director of Editorial Video and Production, North AmericaJ.
