Sarah Emerson's love of running began with small steps — from a treadmill to a 10K and eventually up to marathons. Along the way, she added meaning to the miles by running as a St. Jude Hero. Then Sarah was diagnosed cancer. She responded with her greatest feat of running — completing the Boston Marathon, near the end of treatment, for the benefit of St. Jude.

She was ordained at Houston Zen Center in 2007 and served as Shuso/Head Monk in 2013-2014. She received Dharma Transmission, recognition as a fully ordained dharma successor from Abbot Gaelyn, in 2015. She is now the co-head teacher of Stone Creek Zen Center in Sebastopol, CA, but returns to teach at Houston Zen Center every year.

Sarah Emerson Sarah Emerson is a singer, songwriter from Seattle, Washington. Following behind the heels of her songwriting grandmother Berta Emerson, she has penned lyrics and had poems locally published since childhood. She was first noticed for songwriting at her local church where she wrote a song called “What Joy.” It was released and went viral covered by many people around the world including Susan Ashton. Inspired by her faith, she ventured to play and sing for people both with and without faith. Her first album was released in 2012, self-written and produced by her friends. From there she played gig's around the city and nearly sold out the Triple Door. She’s an avid supporter of orphans around the world and gave the proceeds of her first project to build a dormitory in Uganda that now sleeps, 400 children. She has since then teamed up with a talented pop producer from Amsterdam and released her 1st electronic EP in 2018, Named EMERSON in honor of her dad who passed in 2017. For this episode of The Future Is A Mixtape, Jesse & Matt discuss the slow, spiral reckoning of Ridley Scott's much-celebrated and increasingly influential film Blade Runner, whose long and winding road lead to a sequel, Blade Runner 2049. While detractors of the original film might feel they're viewing a sexy-time noir featuring little more than robots and porn-jazz, for the entranced, the film's hypnotic imagery and ruminations on universal themes like humanness, memory and belonging still keep many cineaste-hearts aflutter. After the blockbuster ascendency the Star Wars franchise and SF's increasing maturation as a cinematic genre, Ridley Scott's formerly “one-off” was released in 1982, and quickly disappeared at the box office and inside film critics' confused typewriters. However, unbeknownst to many, this leftover lasagna turned into the cult film of cult films. Blade Runner would later grow an organic fanbase from Arty Nerds, Noir Addicts and Cyberpunks, all of whom would despoil their underoos over spinners, unicorn origami and whether Deckard was or wasn't a replicant. Seeing blinking cash-registers in their eyes, Hollywood producers sought out Denis Villeneuve as their architect to extend the franchise with Blade Runner 2049. Your meta-guidance-counselors, Matt & Jesse, will provide a spoiler-bonanza of both films, weigh out Villeneuve's sense of cinema, and examine how the sequel's repeater bleakness short-circuits better questions and ideas. Angie received her undergraduate degree from Linfield College and a Masters of Arts in Teaching from Seattle Pacific University. David Hann teaches 8th grade math and 6/7/8th grade Design & Technology at Donview Middle Health & Wellness Academy, a public school in Toronto, Canada. He was the first teacher to pilot a 3D printing program in a Toronto middle school, complementing his existing Design & Technology program in a wood/metal shop. In 2014 and 2015, David and several colleagues collaborated to have 8th grade students build pinball machines using Makey Makey and Scratch for a cross-curricular final project (covering Math, English, Science, History and Geography). He has presented this project at conferences and Maker Faires, including the 2015 World Maker Faire in New York. David is one of the co-founders of the MakerEdTO group, which organizes a summer maker conference for Toronto/Ontario teachers, and facilitates the development of educators maker skills and professional network. He holds two bachelor’s degrees from the University of Toronto, in Education, and in History & Philosophy, and has additional qualification as a Design & Technology specialist teacher. Sarah Emerson is the co-founder of the iSTEAM Lab at Bing Wong Elementary School, a public school in San Bernardino, California, United States. The iSTEAM Lab was founded to inspire students to imagine, innovate and engage in building hope for their futures. Emerson is the school's STEAM program facilitator, primarily teaching mechanical engineering, manufacturing, product innovation, entrepreneurship, and animatronics to students in kindergarten through sixth grade. She also collaborates with her colleagues at the elementary level, as well as the secondary and post-secondary levels, and community partners to design and implement cross-curricular units in which students explore careers in various STEAM industries. Emerson is currently a certification writer for Linked Learning at the elementary level. She holds a bachelor's degree in Chicano studies, a master's degree in education, and a GATE certificate from the University of California, Riverside.

A few weeks ago we visited with our good friend Sarah Emerson for an Amp’d Interview where she shared with us the What Joy Project. For this week’s Wise Words, we ask Sarah about the release of her album two years ago and how she determined whether it should be released as a Christian or secular work. It’s something than many artists question as they consider where their work will have the most impact.We also promised to update you when we had new information on the project launch. A few years ago, we had the blessing of being introduced to Sarah Emerson, singer-songwriter and worship leader from Seattle, WA. At the time, we interviewed Sarah for The Songwriters Cafe (now www.KingdomSongs.org) as she promoted her album Sarah Emerson and the Radio Kings. The album was a unique endeavor wherein all proceeds benefited the Destiny Orphanage in Uganda, Africa.
