Researchers, led by Konstantin Batygin, used the orbits of Jupiter's small moons, Amalthea and Thebe, to deduce these findings, providing critical insights into the early stages of planetary formation. The implications of this research could reshape our understanding of gas giants and their formation processes across the universe.Gamma Rays and LightningIn a groundbreaking discovery, scientists have detected intense flashes of gamma rays produced by lightning strikes. This phenomenon, known as terrestrial gamma ray flashes, occurs when lightning accelerates electrons to near light speeds, resulting in bursts of radiation. The study, published in Science Advances, sheds light on the high-energy processes occurring in Earth's atmosphere, enhancing our understanding of lightning's power and its effects on our planet.Precision Formation Flying in SpaceHistory has been made in Earth orbit as two spacecraft from the European Space Agency's Proba 3 mission successfully flew in millimeter-perfect formation for the first time. This precision alignment is crucial for studying the Sun's corona, allowing the two satellites to simulate a single large spacecraft. We discuss the technology behind this mission and its potential to revolutionize solar observations.www.spacetimewithstuartgary.com✍️ Episode ReferencesNature Astronomyhttps://www.nature.com/natureastronomy/Science Advanceshttps://www.science.org/journal/sciadvBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/spacetime-space-astronomy--2458531/support.00:00 This is Space Time Series 28, Episode 64 for broadcast on 28 May 202501:00 Jupiter's original size and magnetic field12:15 Gamma ray flashes unleashed by lightning22:30 Precision formation flying in space30:00 Science report: New contact lens technology for night vision

Following a stretch of interpersonal conflicts and legal setbacks, Seattle's own TAD were poised to bring their heavy, aggressive sound to the majors. The arrival of powerhouse drummer Josh Sinder (formerly of The Accüsed) reinvigorated the band, as Tad Doyle, Kurt Danielson, and Gary Thorstensen channeled a blend of punk grit and metal heft into their songwriting. On their 1993 major label debut Inhaler, TAD delivers a raw, monolithic slab of sound both ugly and unrelenting, while still managing to weave in moments of surprising beauty. This week we are joined by special guest Tad Doyle to discuss the making of Inhaler, his prolific solo career, operating Witch Ape Studio, as well as his work composing scores for film!Amalthea is OUT NOW via Bandcamp: https://thomasandrewdoyle.bandcamp.com/album/amaltheaCara is available NOW to buy or rent digitally: https://tv.apple.com/us/movie/cara/umc.cmc.4rmrdebdccroxtxu2mzx128uh?ctx_at=6The People's Union USA: https://thepeoplesunionusa.com/Follow Tad DoyleInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/tad.doyle.music/Twitter: https://x.com/TadDoyle_TadWebsite: https://www.taddoyle.com/Recommendations:YobFor all updates on Riff Worship follow us on Instagram and TwitterWatch Riff Worship on YouTubeWatch Review's from the Dylbozer's DinCheck out our official playlists:Riffs on Repeat (Spotify)Hits from the Crypt (Apple)
When I decided to write about goats in folklore, I thought I would find plenty of content. After all, they appear in mythology. Look at Amalthea, the goat reputed to have raised Zeus in Greek myth. Or the goats associated with the goatherd in the Auriga constellation. That's before we get anywhere near the sign of Capricorn. Yet in terms of actual folklore, there's less than you would expect. Unlike pigs, there are few specific tales about goats. Instead, they pop up almost as a side character in relation to other animals. That said, they do have associations with fairies, and of course, we can't talk about goats without addressing the devil-shaped elephant in the room. So let's see what folklore we can find about the humble goat in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore!

In today's episode, four ships travelled from Larnaca over the weekend with almost 1,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid for Gaza along the Amalthea corridor. Meanwhile, the Vasiliko liquified natural gas (LNG) project is “not shipwrecked” President Nikos Christodoulides said, after widespread speculation that the project's future was looking increasingly dire. Elsewhere, two men were remanded in custody over what police described as possibly the largest cache of weapons and explosives ever found in Cyprus. All this and more in the Cyprus Beat briefing brought to you by the Cyprus Mail.

In today's episode, the continuation of the provision of humanitarian aid to Gaza through the Amalthea plan is dependent on "favourable circumstances". Meanwhile, the price of olive oil has gone up a whopping 105.9 per cent since last Easter. Elsewhere, the 82-year-old who was jailed for shooting a cable thief in March was handed a presidential pardon and is a free man. All this and more in the Cyprus Beat briefing brought to you by the Cyprus Mail.
In today's episode, the appeals court on Tuesday reserved its decision over an 82-year-old grandfather jailed for shooting a man who was attempting to steal electricity cables. Elsewhere, the Amalthea plan, Cyprus' humanitarian aid corridor to Gaza, is to continue despite Israel's “reprehensible attack” on aid workers, President Nikos Christodoulides said. Meanwhile, if the ongoing traffic issues in Limassol are not properly addressed, people's quality of life “will deteriorate very quickly,” Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades warned. All this and more in the Cyprus Beat briefing brought to you by the Cyprus Mail.
In today's episode, dignitaries from 35 countries and representatives of various international organisations descended on Larnaca for a meeting over the Amalthea initiative – Cyprus' humanitarian aid corridor to Gaza. Meanwhile, President Nikos Christodoulides met with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Elsewhere, the giant water bug, which has been found in Cyprus by scientists, does not bite human toes. All this and more in the Cyprus Beat briefing brought to you by the Cyprus Mail.
Why be a goat OR a fish when you can be both? For the smallest constellation in the zodiac Capricorn definitely punches above its weight in lore. We'll learn more about; Zeus' four-legged stepmother (Amalthea), the goat-footed gods' holiday to Egypt (Pan), the loneliest and saddest sea creature (Pricus) and their origins in a much older connection to the Babylonian god of wisdom and water (Ea). This episode finishes with a traditional 3-9 count breathing meditation to start the new year with a clear mind.
This episode is a deep dive into the mountain goat of Capricorn; Looking up and ahead, mapping and planning, and strategically making our way to the new peaks of personal and cultural growth and maturity..Saturn/Cronus rules this sign and we will take another look at his mythology as he overthrows his father and then eats his own children. Astrologically the planet represents the painful process of life's great challenges but how they are ultimately in our path not just to antagonize us, but to make us flourish into who we are meant to be.The Great God Pan and his sister Amalthea, Zeus' nanny goat, are also explored. Pan as the rustic, wild, musical and wise half-goat God. And Amalthea as the nurturing caregiving energy. Both of these elements help us to expand our view of Capricorn beyond that of the serious, disciplined and controlling one..We also take a look back to ancient calendars and the importance of the festival of Saturnalia that would occur around this time of year. As well as a glimpse into the figures of Jesus and Dionysus and their shared birthday of December 25th, making them both Capricorn Suns..The image for the cover is taken from here. This week on the show, Desmond and Duane make the right choice by not watching all of the Children of the Corn films. Instead they make the still questionable choice to watch the original 1984 film and then the brand new remake. The planet Jupiter has a system of faint planetary rings. The Jovian rings were the third ring system to be discovered in the Solar System, after those of Saturn and Uranus. The main ring was discovered in 1979 by the Voyager 1 space probe and the system was more thoroughly investigated in the 1990s by the Galileo orbiter. The main ring has also been observed by the Hubble Space Telescope and from Earth for several years. Ground-based observation of the rings requires the largest available telescopes. The Jovian ring system is faint and consists mainly of dust. It has four main components: a thick inner torus of particles known as the "halo ring"; a relatively bright, exceptionally thin "main ring"; and two wide, thick and faint outer "gossamer rings", named for the moons of whose material they are composed: Amalthea and Thebe. The main and halo rings consist of dust ejected from the moons Metis, Adrastea and perhaps smaller, unobserved bodies as the result of high-velocity impacts. High-resolution images obtained in February and March 2007 by the New Horizons spacecraft revealed a rich fine structure in the main ring.In visible and near-infrared light, the rings have a reddish color, except the halo ring, which is neutral or blue in color. The size of the dust in the rings varies, but the cross-sectional area is greatest for nonspherical particles of radius about 15 μm in all rings except the halo. The halo ring is probably dominated by submicrometre dust. The total mass of the ring system (including unresolved parent bodies) is poorly constrained, but is probably in the range of 1011 to 1016 kg. The age of the ring system is also not known, but it is possible that it has existed since the formation of Jupiter.A ring or ring arc appears to exist close to the moon Himalia's orbit. One explanation is that a small moon recently crashed into Himalia and the force of the impact ejected the material that forms the ring. To celebrate this time of the year where, like Janus with his two faces, we're looking backwards and forwards, this episode looks into the two Titan brothers of Greek Mythology, Prometheus (forethought) and Epimetheus (afterthought). But first, it's a deep dive into the Creation Myth of Greek Mythology going right back to the relationship between Gaia (Earth Mother) and Ouranus (Sky Father). From here we follow the brewing battle between Chronus (Saturn) and Zeus (Jupiter) as they continue on the lineage of Father Vs Son into the Clash of the Titans. On this new moon in Capricorn, wedged between the Solstice and Christmas, we dive into the much misunderstood sign of Capricorn and see if we might find our way into a deeper, richer and more complex understanding of this essential archetypal energy. Honorable mentions: Pandora, Atlas, Saturnalia, Pan, Amalthea and more in this all-star cast of Ancient Greek Deities.Music by Marlia Coeur on Spotify. Please consider becoming a Patron to support the show!Go to OnTheSoulsTerms.com for more.

This is: Sam Bankman-Fried has been arrested, published by Markus Amalthea Magnuson on December 12, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Confirmed by Sarah Emerson, a tech reporter at Forbes: (Edit: Now also confirmed by NYT, CNBC, Bloomberg, Yahoo Finance, and others.) Includes statement from the Attorney General of The Bahamas, transcribed below: Statement from the Attorney General of The Bahamas Sen. Ryan Pinder KC on the arrest of Sam Bankman-Fried On 12 December 2022, the Office of the Attorney General of The Bahamas is announcing the arrest by The Royal Bahamas Police Force of Sam Bankman-Fried ("SBF"), former CEO of FTX. SBF's arrest followed receipt of formal notification from the United States that it has filed criminal charges against SBF and is likely to request his extradition. As a result of the notification received and the material provided therewith, it was deemed appropriate for the Attorney General to seek SBF's arrest and hold him in custody pursuant to our nation's Extradition Act. At such time as a formal request for extradition is made, The Bahamas intends to process it promptly, pursuant to Bahamian law and its treaty obligations with the United States. Responding to SBF's arrest, Prime Minister Davis stated, "The Bahamas and the United States have a shared interest in holding accountable all individuals associated with FTX who may have betrayed the public trust and broken the law. While the United States is pursuing criminal charges against SBF individually, The Bahamas will continue its own regulatory and criminal investigations into the collapse of FTX, with the continued cooperation of its law enforcement and regulatory partners in the United States and elsewhere." Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: The EA Infrastructure Fund seems to have paused its grantmaking and approved grant payments. Why?, published by Markus Amalthea Magnuson on December 6, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Yesterday someone said the EA Infrastructure Fund had paused its grantmaking. They later added that they had people send in grant proposals and got an email back confirming this pause. Today I got confirmation from a second person who said they know people with approved grants from the EAIF that have had the payments of those grants paused. I'm trying to find any official communication on this but have not found any yet. This might be relevant though, and possibly this. Does anyone know what is going on here? Thanks for listening. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: How the FTX crash damaged the Altruistic Agency, published by Markus Amalthea Magnuson on November 13, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Introduction First, I'd like to express my deepest sympathies to everyone affected by the FTX breakdown. A lot of people have lost their life savings and are suffering terribly, something I do not wish to diminish in any way. Many are affected in far worse ways than I can even imagine, and I hope as many of those as possible will be able to find the support they need to get through these challenging times. I got confirmation this week on Wednesday (Nov 9) that payouts from the FTX Future Fund had stopped. Since I had an outstanding grant with them, this was of great concern to me personally. The days following that, and what is still unravelling minute by minute, it seems, was the complete meltdown of FTX and all related entities, including the Future Fund. You are all following these events in other places, so I won't go into that much, but I wanted to offer a perspective from a Future Fund grantee and the specific ways something like this can do damage. This post is also a call for support since all funding for my next year of operations has suddenly evaporated entirely. Specifically, if you or someone you know is a grantmaker or donor to EA meta/infrastructure/operations projects and would be interested in funding a new organisation with a good track record, please get in touch. I'd be happy to share much more details and data on the proven value so far, my grant application to the Future Fund, and anything else that might be of interest. I will also mention the benefits of being vigilant about organisational structure and how it can save your organisation in the long run, even though it might be an upfront and ongoing cost of time and money. Background I founded the Altruistic Agency in January this year. The idea was to apply my knowledge and experience from 15+ years as a full-stack developer to help organisations and others in the EA community with tech expertise. I hypothesised that the kind of work I had done mostly in a commercial context for most of my professional life is also highly valuable to nonprofits/charities and others doing high-impact work within EA cause areas. I have always been fond of meta projects, and this seemed like something that could greatly increase productivity (like technology does), especially by saving people lots of time that they could instead spend on their core mission. Thanks to a grant from the EA Infrastructure Fund, I was able to test this hypothesis full-time and spent the first half of this year providing free tech support to many EA organisations and individuals. During that time, I worked with around 45 of them in areas such as existential risk, animal advocacy, climate, legal research, mental health, and effective fundraising. The work ranged from small tasks, such as improving email deliverability, fixing website bugs, and making software recommendations, to larger tasks, such as building websites, doing security audits, and software integration. The response from the community was overwhelmingly positive, and the data from the January–June pilot phase of the Altruistic Agency indicates high value. I solved issues (on median) in a fifth of the time it would have taken organisations themselves. The data indicates just one person doing this work for six months saved EA organisations at least 900 hours of work. Additionally, many respondents said they learned a lot from working with me, both about their own systems and setups and about tech in general. Not least, increased awareness of security issues in code and systems, which will only become more crucial over time, and can be significantly harmful if not dealt with properly. The night sky is filled with beautiful objects with beautiful names — names from ancient Arabic, Greek, and Latin. But the most prominent object in the night sky doesn't have one of those names. It's the Moon — a name that means — well, the Moon. The name is a little more lyrical in other languages — Luna in Spanish, Lune in French — but they all mean the same thing. There's no real story behind any of them. That's not the case for the moons that orbit the brilliant planet Jupiter, which is to the left of the Moon early this evening. Jupiter's first four moons were discovered in 1610. Since they attended Jupiter — the king of the Roman gods — eventually they were given names associated with Jupiter. Callisto, Europa, and Ganymede were all seduced by Jupiter, while Io was driven mad by his jealous wife. The next Jovian moon wasn't discovered until almost three centuries later, but astronomers stuck with the naming theme. They chose Amalthea, after a nymph who had nursed the young Jupiter. Later discoveries also kept the theme, but widened it a bit — they included characters related to Zeus, the Greek god whom the Romans adopted as Jupiter. So that gave us names like Sinope and Lysithea. That tradition continues today, although it takes a little more work. Even though Jupiter and Zeus were grand characters with rich histories, even they eventually ran out of nursemaids and partners. Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

Send us a Text Message.Caro, a longtime fan and art collector of animation from the classic 1982 film The Last Unicorn, shares her journey to become the founder and creator of The Last Unicorn 40th event which kicks off Saturday, July 30, with a special screening at the David Geffen Academy of Motion Pictures theater. Sure to be filled with cos-play characters of unicorns, princesses including Amalthea and princes and upset dragons, the event is the first of a soon to be international tour of this very special film and its Japanese-based anime artistry and the classic book written by Peter S. Beagle. For anyone who hasn't seen this film, its feminine power themes defy the usual rescue-me princess tales and empower women in their most feminine. Marked by a call to tribe, the last unicorn journeys through adventures and deep darkness to find she indeed is NOT the last unicorn. But not before facing peril and many heart-rendering choices. Caro, inspired by the movie since her childhood, took on the arduous, grassroots task of creating The Last Unicorn 40th anniversary event, merchandise and tour. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Did OpenPhil ever publish their in-depth review of their three-year OpenAI grant?, published by Markus Amalthea Magnuson on July 4, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. In March 2017, OpenPhil published the reasoning behind their three-year $30M grant to OpenAI. In that post, they state: We plan to do informal reviews each year. We currently plan to do a more in-depth review to consider further renewal at the end of this three-year term. The key questions for renewal will be whether OpenAI appears to be a significant positive force for reducing potential risks from advanced AI, and/or whether our involvement is tangibly helping OpenAI move towards becoming a positive force for AI safety. Does anyone know if any such review was ever published publically? I've searched their website, the forum etc. but have not found anything like that. (I have found a lot of speculation on "what happened" between OpenPhil and OpenAI though.) This December 2020 post does not have any relevant mentions of such review work. Judging by the OpenPhil database, they have not made any subsequent grants to OpenAI which makes me conclude they did not find OpenAI "to be a significant positive force" per the quote above. This is just more speculation, though, and it would be very interesting to learn where OpenPhil stands on OpenAI, first-hand. Thanks for listening. My friend Jenny Kellogg returns to the podcast, this time to speak about the Akashic Records. Early scientists said that there was a fifth element beyond fire, air, earth, and water. It was called “ether.” The information field of the universe could also be called ether, and this information field is what the Akashic Records are said to contain - a dynamic, neutral reservoir of information including every thought, emotion, experience, and intention of your soul through all lifetimes. Jenny and I discuss the difference between accessing the Akashic Records vs. psychic/past life regression readings, and, in true form, we bring a hefty portion of discernment, nuance and groundedness to yet another extremely complex spiritual topic!
