We also talk about how Elon's management of twitter is tied into his other business ventures, and that while he might have been good at spinning all the plates before, the reckoning of tech giants might mean the jig is up.

Professor Jeremi Duru, a nationally recognized sports law expert, joins us this week to talk about a baseball-related U.S. Supreme Court case, Flood v. Kuhn, decided 50 years ago this week (June 19, 1972, to be exact). The case sparked the movement that birthed the free agency era in baseball and sports.Curt Flood was an All-Star and Gold Glove center fielder for the St. Louis Cardinals during their 1960's heyday. The Cardinals won 2 World Series titles, in 1964 and 1967, and Flood played a big role for both teams. After the 1969 season though, the Cardinals traded Flood to the Philadelphia Phillies. Flood protested the trade and ultimately sued Major League Baseball -- a lawsuit that cost Flood his career.Professor Duru leads us through the background, Flood's career, the lawsuit and the aftermath, ultimately reminding us that Curt Flood deserves to be remembered today as an excellent baseball player as well as a trailblazer for athlete's rights. You can follow Professor Duru on Twitter and LinkedIn.References:Flood v.

Those questions include: Are we terrible people for slurping down every second of this show like it's a giant generic fountain soda in the clutches of Renée Zellweger‘s fat-suit-clad hands? How should we feel about the complicated ethics of a show— based on a podcast based on an episode of Dateline— that treats the real-life murder at the center of the story like the punchline of a joke? And do the tonal similarities to Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber mean that Renée Zellweger is the Joseph Gordon-Levitt of network television?? On our latest episode of Bingeworthy, co-hosts Mike DeAngelo & Rodrigo Perez dig into Showtime's new anthology series, "Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber," which tells the story of one of Silicon Valley's most successful and most destructive unicorns, Uber. The season pivots on Travis Kalanick (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Uber's hard-charging CEO who was ultimately ousted in a boardroom coup, and his sometimes tumultuous relationship with his mentor Bill Gurley (Kyle Chandler), the plainspoken, brilliant Texan venture capitalist who bets his sterling reputation on Uber's success – and then has to live with the consequences. After the initial intro and discussion of the series, writer/showrunners Brian Koppelman, David Levien, and Executive Producer Beth Schacter (BILLIONS) stop by to discuss the show and why these stories, like Travis Kalanick of Uber, keep popping up out of Silicon Valley. "All of this comes from Steve Jobs," Koppelman says and Jobs legacy really looms large over all these tech stories. [This episode was originally released on October 16, 2019. We are re-releasing it in anticipation of the premiere on Showtime of the original dramatic series based on Mike Isaac's book. More new episodes are on the way!] For a few years after Uber launched in 2009, it seemed like the on-demand ride-hailing service might be an advance in the war on cars — a way for more people to share fewer vehicles and to reduce overall automobile dependence. Fast forward a decade, and the rise of Uber (along with Lyft) has instead resulted in increased congestion, reductions in transit ridership, and the exploitation of a precarious workforce that the company would love to make obsolete altogether. In this episode, we talk with New York Times tech reporter Mike Isaac about his new book, “Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber,” in which he chronicles the rise and fall of Uber's co-founder, Travis Kalanick. We hear what Mike has to say about the cult of the founder and the way Kalanick's winner-take-all mentality has negatively affected the streets of the world's cities.

Adam Neumann, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home (eight of them, actually) and a happy (if slightly hyperactive) disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; and had lived forty years in the world with very little to distress or vex him. In the summer of 2019, he was presiding over the most valuable startup in America: WeWork. To the cynical, it was a glorified desk rental company. To Adam, it was the company that would “elevate the world's consciousness,” broker Middle East peace, build offices on Mars (presumably with the staple WeWork perks: ping pong, cold brew, free beer), and turn Adam into history's first trillionaire. But then the searing sun of reality melted the wax that held his wings together, and he plummeted to earth, the value of his company going up in smoke behind him like a contrail. The story of Adam's spectacular rise and calamitous fall is the subject of a new book called “The Cult of We: WeWork, Adam Neumann, and the Great Startup Delusion.” It was written by two Wall Street Journal reporters, Eliot Brown and Maureen Farrell. Their real-time coverage of Adam's erratic behavior and flagrant self-dealing helped to hasten his demise. For a few years after Uber launched in 2009, it seemed like the on-demand ride-hailing service might be an advance in the war on cars — a way for more people to share fewer vehicles and to reduce overall automobile dependence. Support the podcast on Patreon. Since its launch in 2009, ride-hailing service Uber has undergone major shifts to become a worldwide transportation network despite severe setbacks. Harassment allegations that led to the firing of 20 employees and the resignation of former CEO Travis Kalanick publicly embarrassed the company, yet Uber has grown to become the highest valued private tech company in Silicon Valley. In his new book, Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber, New York Times tech reporter Mike Isaac delves into the ambition, excess and massive loss of Uber and Kalanick over the last few years. Isaac has nearly a decade of experience writing about technology industry in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has spent the past few years covering the controversial ascent of Uber and the company's issues of workplace harassment, sexism and allegations of misconduct that reveal the problematic work culture of Silicon Valley tech companies. Join us as he narrates the deception and bad behavior of Uber that culminated in one of the most controversial periods in American corporate history.
