Makey Makey, a creative platform for children of all ages, turned 10 years old this month. In this episode, we talk with Jay Silver, the creative technologist behind the platform, and Jay Melican, formerly of Intel who runs the business. Jay Silver talks about creative play and learning, and the community that has grown up around Makey Makey.
Mike talked about his winding path to art education and the myth of the art professor with abundant studio time. He shared how he fits in studio time in the gaps and how rich and fulfilling this winding path has been. Mike also shared a project he does with students that provides useful data for teachers in assessing student learning, being able to offer data to administrators, while also letting students see their own growth. He talked about thinking in similar ways within his studio practice to shift to a growth mindset as an artist. I loved the idea of differentiating for yourself, realizing that you can't be fantastic at everything, and recognizing your own growth as an artist. I also loved the mindset shift from “I'm not good at art” to “I've been underserved as an artist.” Thanks, Mike, for a new way to respond to “I can't draw.” Mike talked about many artists he admires and loves to share with students. "All instruments are inventions and all music is made up -- so make your own using microcontrollers," writes Helen Leigh in Volume 76 of Make Magazine, encouraging people to create and invent musical instruments, as she has. In this conversation with Helen Leigh, we learn about her upbringing in Wales, how she first learned about electronics at a makerspace in London, why she objects to call herself "self-taught" and her new lab in Portland Oregon. She came from a family that consumed lots of music and her early musical experiences were singing choral music in church in Wales. Her work today still bears the influences of sounds of the high church of her childhood. We talk about why harpsichords went of out fashion and how electronic music got started with pioneers such as Daphne Oram and Delia Derbyshire. We talk about technology from reel-to-reel tape recorders to synthesizers and to making electronic music with Makey-Makey and the Bela board. Helen is an advocate for people learning how to make their own instruments, to experiment with music and be makers of your own kind of music.https://makezine.com/2021/03/24/making-new-music-with-helen-leigh

In this episode, we’re talking to Eric Rosenbaum - mainly about Scratch, which is a block-based visual programming language. But there is so much more he’s involved with, for example Makey Makey, Drawdio or Singing Fingers. The first line of Eric’s biography says it all - it reads: “I design for creative play”. This could not be more true just look at the array of creative educational projects he was and is involved with. Foremost, there is Scratch - a block-based visual programming language and online community targeted primarily at children. We have mentioned Scratch many times and finally we’re talking with Eric, wo is currently working with the Scratch Team at MIT Media Lab.https://kidslab.dev/2020/03/09/scratch-with-eric-rosenbaum/

Piastów Śląskich w Chrząstawie Wielkiej koło Wrocławia, a także trenerką w programie Mistrzowie Kodowania i członkinią grupy Superbelfrzy RP i Superbelfrzy Mini. „Zrób to sam/a. Dydaktyczne pomoce (niemal) z niczego”. This podcast features three different recordings from the 2018 Ohio Educational Technology Conference, which was held in Columbus, Ohio, February 12-14, 2018. The first is an interview with high school students who have learned how to create interactive games using Scratch software. They also have created DIY game controllers using the MakeyMakey and supplies like tin foil, cardboard, alligator clips, play dough, and bananas. The second interview is with high school senior Arthur Bodenschatz, who is part of the broadcast journalism team in North Canton City Schools, Ohio. Arthur and his classmates use an amazing “mobile storyteller” converted RV to conduct professional quality interviews at events like the Ohio educational technology conference. The third interview is Arthur's interview of me at OETC, in which he asked me about my reasons for becoming a teacher and technology director, the pace of technological change in our society, and a few other topics. Two of these three recordings are also available as videos on YouTube and Vimeo, which are linked in the podcast shownotes. In addition to these three recordings, a few reflections on some additional highlights of OETC 2018 are included. These focus on Eric Curts' (@ericcurts) 3 hour workshop "Write Right with Google Tools: Improving Writing in all Subjects," Todd Beard's (@teacherbeard) session on Minecraft for Education, and Apple Education's workshop on updates to iOS 11. Please refer to the podcast shownotes for links to referenced resources, as well as a raft of Wes' tweets from OETC 2018 sharing additional tips and links from sessions. Why can't two slices of pizza be used as a slide clicker? Why shouldn't you make music with ketchup? In this charming talk, inventor Jay Silver talks about the urge to play with the world around you. He shares some of his messiest inventions, and demos MaKey MaKey, a kit for hacking everyday objects.
