Nevins-Freeman Address: Tom Clemens on General Joseph K. F. Mansfield For More Info: www.ChicagoCWRT.org The Chicago Civil War Round Table's Nevins-Freeman Award is intended to honor those who advance Civil War scholarship and the Round Table movement. Past winners have included Bruce Catton, Gary Gallagher, Bud Robertson and James McPherson. This year we honor Tom Clemens, a man who through his writings and battlefield tours has done so much to illuminate the Antietam Campaign, On October 12th Tom Clemens' Nevins-Freeman address will explore General Joseph K. F. Mansfield's life, including his all-too-brief (2 days) tenure as commander of the XII Corps. What most Civil War enthusiasts know about Joseph K. F. Mansfield, if they know anything at all, is that he was a Union corps commander who was killed at Antietam. While that is true, it was only the end of his 40 plus years of service in the U.S. Army. Often dismissed as a non-combatant through most of his career, he actually was involved in several vital aspects in the early part of the Civil War. The facts are that he was he was anything but a "staff puke," as Ed Bearss once dismissed him on a tour not many years ago. Dr. Thomas G. Clemens received his Doctorate in History Education from George Mason University, where he studied under noted Civil War historian Dr. Joseph L. Harsh. After a 34 year career at Hagerstown Community College, he retired as Professor Emeritus in 2012. He edited and annotated General Ezra A. Carman's manuscript, the Maryland Campaign of September 1862, in addition to numerous articles and several monographs, including one on Gen. Joseph K. F. Mansfield. Tom is a founding member and current president of Save Historic Antietam Foundation Inc., a non-profit historic preservation organization and an NPS-certified Antietam Battlefield Guide.

Philosophy at the Movies

What does this 1962 Orson Welles film, based upon the incomplete Franz Kafka novel, tell us in its utilization of a nightmarish story? How does the illogic of transitions mimic nightmares? Do any of the characters surrounding and including protaganist Joseph K, truly know what is going on? Are they all in the same uncomprehending state with regard to their places in the world? How does Joseph K's ‘throwness' into his world reflect our own status, according to existentialist thought? How does this 1914 novel forecast elements of the legal systems of later 20th century totalitarian states in Germany and Soviet Russia? What does the fable of the man sitting in front of the doorway asking for entrance to ‘the Law' represent? Does the Law represent God? Does the film present us with a meditation on the problem of evil, pain and suffering being allowed by God, and man's inability to find justification or rationale for it? How does Welles symbolize human ignorance in the closing of the film, using the parable of the man at the gates of the Law watching the door close forbidding his entrance as he dies?

Welcome to episode 79, in this episode I have the honor of interviewing Father Joseph Grieboski.  His bio is long, but I didn’t know what to cut out so want to share it all with you.  I think you will find his story fascinating.       Joseph K. Grieboski is a social entrepreneur whose innovative ideas have revolutionized thinking across a number of fields.       In 1999 – at the age of 24 – Grieboski founded THE INSTITUTE on Religion and Public Policy, a well-respected and world-renowned non-governmental organization at the forefront of religious freedom advocacy. Many years and several Nobel Peace Prize nominations later, Grieboski has become an internationally recognized expert in religious freedom, national security, counter-extremism, human rights, and conflict transformation. As a matter of fact, in a letter to Grieboski in 2005, His Majesty, King Mohammed VI, of Morocco referred to Grieboski’s work as the “foundation of a new civilization”.      His extensive travels to over 140 countries in every corner of the map have allowed Grieboski to meet, interact with, and befriend leaders of business and industry, government, entertainment, advocacy, and other arenas, giving him one of Washington’s best and most sought-after rolodexes.      From confidence-building programs in Darfur to post-conflict reconstruction in Kosovo, from track-three diplomacy efforts in North Korea and Iran to minority protection and reintegration in Iraq and Afghanistan, from authoring countless laws for numerous countries to securing the successful release of hostages and prisoners, Grieboski has been at the forefront of some of most crucial and sensitive issues in the world.      Grieboski is a Senior Fellow with The Dietrich Bonhoeffer Institute and was one of three finalists for United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief and nominee for United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants and Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism, demonstrating global recognition of his expertise on international human rights and security issues. Chairman of the Board of International Center on Religion and Justice, he also serves as Chairman of the Board of International Campaign for the Rohingya; Member of the Board of Directors of Interfaith Alliance; Member of the Board of Trustees of the International Foundation for Tolerance; Member of the Board of Directors of The Working Group on Children Recruited by Terrorist and Violent Extremist Groups; Member of the Board of Advisors of Rumi Forum; Strategic US Advisor to the Directorate, Faith and Globalization Program, Durham University, United Kingdom; Secretary-General, Interparliamentary Conference on Human Rights and Religious Freedom; Member of the Board of Honor, Planète Citoyenne; Member of the Board of Advisors, Arakhan Rohingya Union; Member of the Board of Advisors, Military Religious Freedom Foundation; Member of the Board of Advisors, Anti-Predator Project; Member of the Expert Advisory Group on "Promoting and Protecting the Universal Right to Freedom of Religion or Belief through Law: Current Dilemmas and Lessons Learned”, International Development Law Organization.       The author of over 50 articles and two recognized publications with Palgrave Macmillan and Oakton, Grieboski served as a columnist for The Huffington Post and a foreign news editor and contributor for The Cutting Edge News. His book, Because I Believe: Inspiring Stories from People Who Are Changing the World, is due out in 2021.      Former Chair of the US State Department Strategic Dialogue with Civil Society Working Group on Religion and Foreign Policy Subgroup on International Development and Humanitarian Assistance under Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Grieboski has also worked inc lose partnership with the Foreign Office of the United Kingdom, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the European Parliament, the Holy See, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, The Opposition with Jordan Klepper, and many other national and international entities. As a religious freedom, human rights, and international policy expert, Grieboski has testified before the United States Congress, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the United Nations Human Rights Council, the European Parliament, and numerous other legislative and international bodies.       In April 2010 Grieboski was inducted into the International Board of Sponsors of the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel at Morehouse College – Martin Luther King’s alma mater. The award honors those who have made significant contributions to the civil and human rights nonviolence movement in the tradition of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King.      Grieboski holds a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service degree and a Master of Arts degree in National Security Studies, both from Georgetown University. He is completing a Master’s in Sacred Theology from Agape Seminary. In 2008, Grieboski received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Marywood University in Scranton, PA.       Ordained a priest in the Independent Old Catholic Church in April 2019, Grieboski lives in Alexandria, VA, with his wife, Tracy, and their dog, Eddie, and cats Theo, Charlie, and Bridgie.  Links: Convergent Streams: The Premier ISM Magazine.

This episode of This Must Be The Place is a bit different – normally I talk to people, but in this episode I (meaning Liz Taylor, Monash University) actually just read out an essay I wrote recently about my experience of living in a building with combustible cladding. Also about reading Kafka (and Graeber) and…well that’s the basic premise. I’ve called it Trial by Cladding. “I recently finished reading Franz Kafka’s 1925 novel “The Trial”: the unsettling, absurd story of a young middle-class man suddenly caught up in a farce of bureaucracy. The protagonist Joseph K spends a year fighting charges which are never named, but of which he is presumed guilty. He is increasingly consumed by obscure court proceedings which, officious lawyers assure him, are very serious, but that he need not dare try to understand. Disbelief ebbs into resignation. Weekends disappear with worry, and inconvenient appointments see him start to slip up at his job at the bank. The fact he doesn’t know what he is accused of, or whether or not he did something wrong, becomes irrelevant even to himself. “My innocence doesn’t make the matter any simpler”, K reflects: “I have to fight against countless subtleties in which the Court is likely to lose itself. And in the end, out of nothing at all, an enormous fabric of guilt will be conjured up”. I started reading “The Trial” after my apartment building’s last Owners Corporation meeting, because I wanted to directly understand the adjective ‘Kafkaesque’, and its applicability to our situation with combustible cladding. Like most people I knew Kafka was shorthand for absurd situations - famously “Metamorphosis” begins with the character waking up as a giant insect. From its popular usage I understood ‘Kafkaesque’ to mean a comically complicated process – which the situation with combustible cladding certainly already was. But I think “The Trial” had also once been mentioned to me in passing by a Croatian colleague who described her suspicion of cheerful government descriptions of policies. To her, having grown up in communist Yugoslavia, these inevitably signalled something cruelly incompetent going on in the background. Like in “The Trial”, she said. In the confusing boredom of an Owners Corporation meeting concerned with the strange details of the urgent need for us to remove chunks of our building, I was drawn to finally reading “The Trial”. At the least, I thought it might provide a lighter perspective on our situation. Like tens of thousands of others in Victoria, I own and live in an apartment in a building containing combustible cladding - similar materials to what fuelled the 2017 fire at London’s Grenfell Towers, in which 72 people died. In the wake of the Grenfell fire and of a 2014 fire at the LaCrosse Building in Melbourne’s Docklands, Victoria’s Cladding Taskforce determined that the presence of combustible cladding, including aluminium composite panels, on high rise buildings is unsafe and non-compliant. Perhaps surprisingly, the onus for rectifying non-compliant cladding in Victoria has been placed with apartment owners. Not with the builders, developers and other professionals who specified and used the materials and sold the apartments; not with the insurance agencies fond of advertising how awful it would be if a random problem were to happen to your house and ‘won’t you be glad you had insurance’ when it does; nor the local and state government regulators (and private building surveyors who replaced council building inspectors from the 1990s) who signed off on the buildings. Instead, owners who bought purportedly compliant apartments are compelled to fix an urgent problem created by government and industry, and facing bills of typically $40,000 to $60,000 per apartment to do so. In most cases they are poorly equipped to navigate the financial and broader costs. But as Joseph K reflects, “innocence doesn’t make the matter any simpler”…[more in episode]

This week we have a very special guest! Old friend of the show, Joseph K. Gordon (Johnson University) is here to talk a bit about his new book from University of Notre Dame Press, *Divine Scripture in Human Understanding: A Systematic Theology of the Christian Bible.* During guest questions, we hear about Joe’s Jr. High propensity for pattern-mixing and his favorite Adam Sandler movie. Then we turn to the book and its ambitious aims. Joe walks us through the many important notions crammed into the book’s title that help give him some traction on the topic. We push Joe to explain more what he means when he calls the Bible “technology” and that for which it is “useful.” In order to explain that for which Scripture is useful, Joe pivots us to his main title and the relationship between the divine and the human. Among other things, he describes how scripture can teach us that God has intended us to be historical and what our historicity means. We wrap up by discussing how his work might affect the relationship between historical criticism, theological interpretations, and contextual interpretations of the Bible. “Someone must have had the same name as 5-year-old Joseph K., for without having done anything wrong he found himself on Canada's No Fly List one fine morning.” There is a human face to national security law and policy. Stephanie and Craig are honoured to welcome to INTREPID three of the family members behind the grassroots “No Fly List Kids” campaign: Khadija Cajee; Heather Harder; and Zamir Khan. On INTREPID, we talk a lot about hard dilemmas. A no fly list that flags people sharing the same name as a listed person — including small children — and provides no redress system is not one of them. Instead, it reflects the legacy of bad administrative choices. We set out the legal and administrative history and then talk to the family members about their experiences, their efforts and their concerns — including over the fate of bill C-59, the bill that must pass to create the legal superstructure for fixing this Kafkaesque trainwreck.

”Someone must have been telling lies about Joseph K., for without having done anything wrong he was arrested one fine morning”. This perfectly crafted sentence opens probably one of the most important novels of the 20th century, written by probably one of the most important novelists in modern literature. It was written by a 30-something year old Jew from Prague. In his short life he went on to write several books that would make his name almost synonymous with modern literature. That name is Franz Kafka. But what most people don’t know about the legendary author is that Kafka and his works almost disappeared into oblivion. Almost, but thankfully, there was Max Brod. In his new book, The Last Trial, writer Benjamin Balint tells for the first time the full story of Kafka’s legacy and how it survived against all odds. 2NJB is honored to be joined by Benjamin to hear about his new book and the story of Kafka.

This episode of the podcast brings us Joseph Gordon of Johnson University.  He was visiting Saint Leo University to speak about Henri de Lubac and his use of scripture in resistance to the Nazis.  In this conversation with Steve Okey, Joseph will speak about his research on this aspect of de Lubac’s life and work, how the Catholic theologians de Lubac and Lonergan have shaped Gordon’s work as a theologian in the Churches of Christ tradition, and what a Lonerganian view of assessment and student learning outcomes might look like.  They also discuss Gordon’s love of snakes, which fits perfectly with living in Florida. Dr. Joseph K. Gordon is an Associate Professor of Theology at Johnson University in Kissimmee, FL.  He earned his PhD in Systematic Theology and Ethics from Marquette University, his MDiv from Lincoln Christian Seminary, and his BA from Johnson University.  He became an ordained minister in the Christian Churches/Churches of Christ in 2009.  His research focuses on systematic and biblical theology, including his forthcoming book Divine Scripture in Human Understanding: A Systematic Theology of the Christian Bible (University of Notre Dame Press).  He also has a book forthcoming on the theology of Bernard Lonergan, SJ, entitled Bernard Lonergan: A Primer for Understanding his Life and Work (Wipf and Stock). Special thanks for this episode to Dr. Matthew Tapie, Director of the Center for Catholic Jewish Studies at Saint Leo University making the recording of this conversation possible.

For this episode of The Future Is A Mixtape, Jesse & Matt discuss the slow, spiral reckoning of Ridley Scott's much-celebrated and increasingly influential film Blade Runner, whose long and winding road lead to a sequel, Blade Runner 2049. While detractors of the original film might feel they're viewing a sexy-time noir featuring little more than robots and porn-jazz, for the entranced, the film's hypnotic imagery and ruminations on universal themes like humanness, memory and belonging still keep many cineaste-hearts aflutter. After the blockbuster ascendency the Star Wars franchise and SF's increasing maturation as a cinematic genre, Ridley Scott's formerly “one-off” was released in 1982, and quickly disappeared at the box office and inside film critics' confused typewriters. However, unbeknownst to many, this leftover lasagna turned into the cult film of cult films. Blade Runner would later grow an organic fanbase from Arty Nerds, Noir Addicts and Cyberpunks, all of whom would despoil their underoos over spinners, unicorn origami and whether Deckard was or wasn't a replicant. Seeing blinking cash-registers in their eyes, Hollywood producers sought out Denis Villeneuve as their architect to extend the franchise with Blade Runner 2049. Your meta-guidance-counselors, Matt & Jesse, will provide a spoiler-bonanza of both films, weigh out Villeneuve's sense of cinema, and examine how the sequel's repeater bleakness short-circuits better questions and ideas. The co-hosts will finally imagine how this film might be retrofitted or retold, narratively speaking, and roust its viewers into utopian dream-scaping.

Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss Franz Kafka's novel of power and alienation 'The Trial', in which readers follow the protagonist Joseph K into a bizarre, nightmarish world in which he stands accused of an unknown crime; courts of interrogation convene in obscure tenement buildings; and there seems to be no escape from a crushing, oppressive bureaucracy. Kafka was a German-speaking Jew who lived in the Czech city of Prague, during the turbulent years which followed the First World War. He spent his days working as a lawyer for an insurance company, but by night he wrote stories and novels considered some of the high points of twentieth century literature. His explorations of power and alienation have chimed with existentialists, Marxists, psychoanalysts, postmodernists - and Radio 4 listeners, who suggested this as our topic for listener week on In Our Time. GUESTS Elizabeth Boa, Professor Emerita of German at the University of Nottingham Steve Connor, Grace 2 Professor of English at the University of Cambridge Ritchie Robertson, Taylor Professor of the German Language and Literature at the University of Oxford Producer: Luke Mulhall.
