MID-WEST FARM REPORT - MADISON
Research Drives Quality Protein Message For Beef

MID-WEST FARM REPORT - MADISON

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 17, 2025 14:08

March is National Nutrition Month and "beef" wants to be a part of that conversation! Shalene McNeill, PhD, RDN, NCBA’s executive director of Nutrition Science, Health & Wellness, along with Tammy Vaassen, executive director of the Wisconsin Beef Council both want you to know the truth of beef protein and what it brings to your diet. Driving beef demand begins with research, and recent results from a study conducted by the University of Arkansas for Medical Services (UAMS) confirm that not all proteins are created equal. The research, funded by the Beef Checkoff through its contractor, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, was designed to better understand how animal- and plant-based proteins compare in promoting muscle protein synthesis. Muscle protein synthesis is the natural metabolic process in which older, less functional muscle protein fibers are replaced with newer, more functional fibers to support the maintenance or production of muscle mass. Measurements of muscle protein synthesis are an indicator of muscle health and research continues to support the role of healthy muscle tissue in the prevention of numerous diseases. The research reveals that ounce for ounce, beef outperforms a soy-based meat alternative (SBMA) patty in stimulating muscle protein synthesis. While soy and beef are both high-quality proteins, it takes twice the amount of the SBMA with 66% more calories to elicit the same impact on muscle health. You can find out more about the health benefits of beef - regardless of age at beeftips.com or the National Cattlemen's Beef site.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.03.25.534140v1?rss=1 Authors: Richardson, K., Sengupta, M., Sujkowski, A., Libohova, K., Harris, A. C., Wessells, R., Merry, D. E., Todi, S. V. Abstract: Spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) is an X-linked disorder that affects males who inherit the androgen receptor (AR) gene with an abnormal CAG triplet repeat expansion. The resulting protein contains an elongated polyglutamine (polyQ) tract and causes motor neuron degeneration in an androgen-dependent manner. The precise molecular sequelae of SBMA are unclear. To assist with its investigation and the identification of therapeutic options, we report here a new model of SBMA in Drosophila melanogaster. We generated transgenic flies that express the full-length, human AR with a wild-type or pathogenic polyQ repeat. Each transgene is inserted into the same safe harbor site on the third chromosome of the fly as a single copy and in the same orientation. Expression of pathogenic AR, but not of its wild-type variant, in neurons or muscles leads to consistent, progressive defects in longevity and motility that are concomitant with polyQ-expanded AR protein aggregation and reduced complexity in neuromuscular junctions. Additional assays show adult fly eye abnormalities associated with the pathogenic AR species. The detrimental effects of pathogenic AR are accentuated by feeding flies the androgen, dihydrotestosterone. This new, robust SBMA model can be a valuable tool towards future investigations of this incurable disease. Copy rights belong to original authors. In this episode I’m talking to Lisa Benshea who runs the members’ travel program at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art in California. It’s a relatively rare affinity travel program that doesn’t just offer great destinations, but makes sure there’s always a strong art or architecture component in the itinerary to satisfy its travelers’ interests. And they must be doing it right, because the program is about to celebrate its 50th anniversary. And even though art–-and museums in particular-–are a common part of so many visits to major cities whether it’s part of a group tour or individually planned, relatively few travelers book a trip specifically to see the art, or make it the main reason for choosing a destination. I talk to Lisa about this, about who those travelers are, and about what makes the art worth traveling for. We get into well-known great destinations for art, like Italy, but she also comes through with some surprising recommendations that most of us wouldn’t think of as an art destination, and at least one that’s probably not on your travel radar at all. We also talk a little bit about affinity travel in general, discover a task that all tour managers need to be able to pull off if the situation arises, and she drops a very tasty hint for anyone with a Nespresso machine. ---------- Lisa Benshea is the Travel and Special Programs Manager at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. SBMA’s Travel Program, which began in 1972, typically puts on around 18 international and domestic tours per year for museum members. Lisa was born and raised in Honolulu, where she worked as a T.A. at the art school of the Honolulu Art Museum and would volunteer at events put on by the museum, where her mom and grandmother had both worked. She attended Punahou School for 13 years and went abroad twice on school trips. She came to California to attend Occidental College, where she earned her B.A. in Art History and was given the opportunity to study in Italy for six months. During and after college, she worked at museums and as an event planner for an autism organization, before taking time off to volunteer in India. When she moved to Santa Barbara in 2007, she found her perfect job planning trips for SBMA members, a job that combines her love for people, travel, events, and art. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions:  Melissa:Hi there - I am wanting to buy an upright bike and saw that Dr. Cabral links to the PYHIGH indoor cycling bike in a couple of his podcasts as the bike he recommends. I wanted to ask why he recommends this one in particular before making the purchase. This is the link to the one he linked to in the previous podcast notes:  Thank you! Jordan: Hi dr Cabral first off I’ve been listening to your podcast for a year now and I want to thank you for all the amazing information you give. I’ve been dealing with signs of Candida overgrowth for quite some time now but everything has gotten drastically bad recently. I was on your 7 day detox but after day 5 I developed a dry rash patch on my eye and servere dandruff. Not sure if that was any effort to the detox or if you think it could be? I have always had quite dry skin and dandruff however I have now developed eczema like rashes on my eye lids of both eyes, dandruff, severe acne on my back (however I don’t get acne normally), I have had on going yeast infections for years, slight white coating on my tongue. I feel as if this all points to signs of yeast overgrowth . I ordered the CBO protocol a couple months ago to hopefully tackle my yeast infections. But I’m curious to know if this is the right route to go ? I’m a university student in Canada so lab tests are quite pricey to order unfortunately. I also was wondering if it is possible for candida overgrowth can get so severe it affects organs or the blood? Thanks for all your help! Jennifer: Hello, I am someone who is at the end of my rope. I have seen 2 functional /Chinese acupuncturist with no help with my digestive issues. I can't began to tell the amount of money wasted on visits and supplements with no help. I have Lupus and I was tested for Candida and SIBO which both were positive. I have done elimination diets which suck and don't wont work. Also I even took a allergy test for foods. I eat healthy and what I am suppose to eat but I am a worrier and I do stress and I'm anxious about. So I'm sure that contributes to my issues as well. All these supplements with garlic, tuermic, ginger give me heartburn which yes I suffer from that, bloating, constipation. I AM BEGGIN FOR THE RIGNT HELP. PLEASE,PLEASE,PLEASE, HELP ME Sinead: Hi. I don't know if you have ever talked about retrovirus? I'm looking for more easily assimilated info on them. My son had art testing and retrovirus showed up. My question is...is it possible to completely delete retrovirus from the body and HOW? Or is just there always going to remain there to be activated/deactivated ? Thanks so much Lolly: Hi there, from some of the podcasts I’ve come to the conclusion I may have a parasite or Candida overgrowth. One of the podcasts directed me to the parasite cleanse, however I don’t see it anywhere. Is this now the functional detox cleanse? Thank You Barry: Hello, I recently found out I have Kennedy's Disease - Spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) & was wondering if there is anything you can recommend as it seems there is no cure or treatments currently available. I have been suffering with the symptoms for nearly 20 years & would love your insight. Kind regards, Barry Jason: Hey dr Cabral. Just wondering if you have any suggestions on an all natural daily facial cleansing regimen. Or if you could talk about your own daily regimen in that regard. Thank you so much you’re doing amazing work Darren: Hey, pleasant day Dr Cabral. Hope all is well with you, your wife, daughters and those attached to Equilibrium Nutrition. I recall a podcast you had with Dr. Belisa with regard to proper breathing technique. If I am not mistaken I believe you recommend a 5 second inhale and a longer exhale. Despite my best efforts I can not make the 5 second inhale. It has to be really forced and I get overwhelmed. Most I get is around 3.5 second on inhale. The exhalation is no issue. Is this a problem that can affect me or am I overthinking it? Does everyone have different lung capacity so some fill up quicker or something? If not, any advice with regard to this will be most appreciated. I tried the single nostril breathing too and dunno if that's helping. I'm a vata pitta type, fit. As always keep up great work.   Thank you for tuning into today's Cabral HouseCall and be sure to check back tomorrow where we answer more of our community’s questions!  - - - Show Notes & Resources: http://StephenCabral.com/1576 - - - Get Your Question Answered: http://StephenCabral.com/askcabral   - - - Dr. Cabral's New Book, The Rain Barrel Effect https://amzn.to/2H0W7Ge - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: http://CabralSupportGroup.com - - -   Dr. Cabral’s Most Popular Supplements: > “The Dr. Cabral Daily Protocol” (This is what Dr. Cabral does every day!) - - - > Dr. Cabral Detox  (The fastest way to get well, lose weight, and feel great!) - - - > Daily Nutritional Support Shake  (#1 “All-in-One recommendation in my practice) - - - > Daily Fruit & Vegetables Blend  (22 organic fruit & vegetables “greens powder”) - - - > CBD Oil  (Full-spectrum, 3rd part-tested & organically grown) - - - > Candida/Bacterial Overgrowth, Leaky Gut, Parasite & Speciality Supplement Packages - - - > See All Supplements: https://equilibriumnutrition.com/collections/supplements  - - -   Dr. Cabral’s Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Organic Acids Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Thyroid + Adrenal + Hormone Test  (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Adrenal + Hormone Test (Run your adrenal & hormone levels) - - - > Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Omega-3 Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels) - - - > Stool Test (Use this test to uncover any bacterial, h.
