In the first episode of 2025, Skyler and Evan do a quick jaunt around the league to see where some former Rockies prospects have ended up. Meanwhile, Scott Oberg has been named the minor league pitching coordinator! We wrap things up by discussing projections and expectations for Brenton Doyle going into the 2025 season. In this week's episode of Every Rockie Ever, Skyler and Dustin convened on a snow day to chat former players that currently work as coaches in the Rockies system. Recently, the Rockies hired former catcher Dustin Garneau as the major league bullpen coach. Despite a career that didn't flourish at the plate, Garneau has been known for solid defense and his work as catching coordinator/game planner for the minor league system the past two years presents some hope for the team's young bullpen. They then turn focus to fan favorite and 2018 Wild Card game hero Tony Wolters. Wolters joined the organization as the bench coach for the ACL Rockies in 2024, and the brothers break down his excellent work behind the plate working with pitches, lamenting that his offense never took off, and getting to the root of why he had the nickname Papers. Finally, they close things out mourning what could have been for current Rockies special assistant Scott Oberg. As Oberg was growing into prominence as a reliever, a recurring blood clot issue in his arm forced an early retirement from baseball, robbing both Oberg and fans of the high-quality reliever he was becoming. Still, there are wonderful moments to celebrate, like his role in closing out the 2018 Wild Card victory over the Cubs. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Technically still a member of the Rockies roster, Scott Oberg was kind enough to sit down with us and talk ball on the latest Banter Session. One of the most humble and down to earth ballplayers, Oberg comes with a very nuanced and complex understanding of how baseball works If you want the inside scoop on how Oberg's career went, starting as a Massachusetts high schooler, to his UConn baseball career and the beginning of some uncommon injuries, all the way up to his peak moment closing out the Cubs in the 2018 Wild Card game, this is the pod for you. Oberg's career numbers sit at 3.85 ERA with 234 strikeouts over 257.1 innings. After hitting another gear in mid-June of 2017, Oberg would finish with a 2.76 ERA over his final 146.2 innings. Regardless of what his baseball future holds, Oberg will hold a revered place in the hearts of Rockies' faithful for being one of the more dependable relievers the team has had in quite some time. On this episode of the DNVR Rockies Podcast, Drew Creasman covers the career of Scott Oberg. From dirt roads and visiting bullpens to the 15th round of the draft to currently serving as one of only 30 MLB closers in the world, his journey reminds us that self-improvement isn't about hope but hard work.
Drew and Julie start the show with a tipoff of the cap to Chi Chi Gonzalez, who finally earned his first win of the season. They turn their attention to the sea of Cardinal red at Coors Field, which leads right to a conversation about the amount of red in the crowd at the CU-Nebraska game. Julie and Drew have much different opinions on that subject, which leads to their first....disagreement. Drew sits down with reliever Scott Oberg, one of the lone bright spots for the Rockies this season. Scott talks about what went personally right for him this season, and what went wrong for the Rockies as a whole. Plus, we get to hear why sometimes he feels like a zoo animal! We finish off the podcast with an honest conversation about what went wrong for the Broncos against the Raiders. As poor as the team looked however, let's not give up on Vic Fangio just yet! Finally, probably like you, we think Antonio Brown is a clown. To ask Julie and Drew a question they'll read on the podcast, just e-mail them at TheDrewGoodmanpodcast.com or contact them directly on twitter at @drewgoodman42 or @juliebrowman1

Kyle Freeland's brilliant 2018 season continues bringing people back to maybe its only historical comparison in Rockies history: that of 1994 starter Marvin Freeman. Well do we have a treat for you on Episode 148 of the Purple Dinosaur Podcast. The one and only Marvin Freeman himself joins the show to look back on his sterling, strike-shortened '94 season that saw him place fourth in National League Cy Young voting and do things most people would now regard as impossible in the early days of the Rockies franchise. We'll rap with Marvin about that year, the Rockies' playoff squad in '95, his time learning from Greg Maddux and the rest of the '90s Braves, his reputation as a glue guy in the clubhouse, today's Rockies, what young pitchers need to know to be successful, the state of baseball in 2018, and a whole lot more. There's even a story in there about an $80,000 violin bow you don't want to miss. (Really.)After Marvin, we catch up with one of the unlikeliest Rockies in recent memory, reliever D.J. Johnson. After stops in four different Major League organizations and two stints in independent ball, Johnson made his big league debut this year. We'll discuss what it felt like to get the call and run in from an MLB bullpen for the first time. The Rockies are in control of their own destiny as we hit the stretch run in 2018. Kyle Freeland, German Marquez, and Jon Gray have been a large reason why, as have Trevor Story and Nolan Arenado. We'll talk about their terrific second halves but also dive into some resurgent Rockies like Scott Oberg and Wade Davis who have likewise been keys to the Rockies' first-place push. It's the 148th episode of the Purple Dinosaur Podcast! Take a little velocity off and hit your spots with it!
