The New York Yankees are rumored to be interested in a reunion with infielder Gio Urshela, who was traded away in 2022, along with Gary Sanchez for Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Josh Donaldson. Stacey and Steve discuss the rumor and wonder where on earth Urshela would fit with the Yankees, but as they've chronicled all offseason, the Yankees need pitching and have enough infielders. They also go through the roster to see if there is a possible spot for Urshela that makes any sense. And when they say roster, they mean the first draft of the 2024 roster. It's obviously in flux and nowhere near finalized. Then, an ESPN article discussed the pitching market and the Yankees' place in it. The author of the article below thinks the Yankees are out on Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery, but as Stacey and Steve have discussed many times this offseason, the market is crazy, it's thin, and the Yankees have to do something. And finally, a comment on a video from a month ago got Steve thinking about MLB expansion, how thin starting pitching is already, and how much worse it could potentially be with two more teams being added to the league. Yankees not in for Snell, Montgomery: https://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/insider/story/_/id/39197575/mlb-yamamoto-signed-dodgers-yankees-red-sox-blue-jays-giants-phillies-mets-pivot-free-agents-trades-movesYankees interest in Gio Urshela: https://theathletic.com/5170213/2023/12/31/mets-starling-marte-winter-ball/Join the LOY Insiders Club via subtext! https://joinsubtext.com/lockedonyankeesWhat is the insider's club? https://youtu.be/BItWi-kbIJY?t=1468Subscribe on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCH5857VCyYLAzsWr9vHk4sQFollow Stacey On Twitter: https://twitter.com/StaceGotsSubscribe to Steve's YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@stevegranadoFollow Steve On Twitter: https://twitter.com/SteveGranadoFollow the Show On Twitter: https://twitter.com/LockedOnYankeesSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!FanDuelScore early this NFL season with FanDuel, America's Number One Sportsbook! MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Texas Rangers 10, Detroit Tigers 6 Chicago White Sox 7, Los Angeles Angels 3 Chicago Cubs 2, Tampa Bay Rays 1 Rangers 10, Tigers 6 – Grant Anderson wins in relief in MLB debut, Rangers beat Tigers 10-6 Reliever Grant Anderson won in an overpowering major league debut and the Texas Rangers beat the Detroit Tigers 10-6 on Tuesday night to improve to 35-19, the best record in franchise history at the one-third mark. Anderson stuck out seven of the nine batters he faced after taking over for starter Martín Pérez in the fifth inning. Texas second baseman Marcus Semien extended his hitting streak to a career-best 19 games with a fifth-inning single. Jonah Heim drove in four runs, Josh Jung homered and had three runs and Aroldis Garcia had four hits and three runs. Miguel Cabrera had three hits and drove in two runs for Detroit. Cabrera passed Ken Griffey Jr. for 15th place with 5,272 total bases. White Sox 7, Angels 3 – Vaughn drives in 3, González homers to help White Sox beat Angels 7-3 Andrew Vaughn drove in three runs, Romy González homered and the Chicago White Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-3. The White Sox looked as if they were headed toward their fourth straight loss after Los Angeles raced out to a 3-1 lead against Lucas Giolito. But the White Sox turned it around in a big way, scoring five in the fourth against Tyler Anderson. Vaughn smacked a three-run double to put Chicago on top. González drove him in with a double, stole third and scored when Urshela allowed catcher Chad Wallach’s throw to wind up in left field, stretching Chicago’s lead to 6-3. González made it a four-run game with a solo homer in the sixth against Chase Silseth. Taylor Ward and Shohei Ohtani homered for Los Angeles. Cubs 2, Rays 1 – Hoerner homers, bullpen shines as Cubs beat McClanahan, Rays 2-1 Nico Hoerner homered and the Chicago Cubs made the most of a rare gaffe by Tampa Bay, handing Shane McClanahan his first loss of the season with a 2-1 victory over the Rays. The game was tied at 1 when Ian Happ led off the sixth with a shallow fly ball that dropped between Tampa Bay second baseman Brandon Lowe and right fielder Josh Lowe in a miscommunication between the fielders. After Seiya Suzuki struck out and Trey Mancini bounced to second, Mike Tauchman hit a tiebreaking RBI single into left field. That was enough for Chicago, which topped the majors’ best team for the second straight day after entering the series with a four-game losing streak. Today Texas (Dunning 4-0) at Detroit (Wentz 1-5), 1:10 p.m.              News/Talk/Sports 94.9 WSJM 12:45 L.A. Hours after starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez went on the 15-day disabled list with a ruptured pulley in his left index finger, centerfielder Riley Greene came out of the game in the third inning. Greene is hitting .294 in his second season and leads the team with 60 hits and 29 runs. Rodriguez is 4-4 in 11 starts with a 2.13 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 67 2/3 innings. NHL – Cup Finals between Vegas and Florida will end with a first-time NHL champion Stanley isn’t just getting a tan. He’s getting a new home. The Stanley Cup Final between the Vegas Golden Knights and Florida Panthers pits teams against each other who have never won the NHL championship. It’s the first time that has happened since 2018 when Vegas made it in its inaugural season before losing to Washington. While ratings aren’t expected to be stellar, the series is a chance to for the league to show off its expansion beyond traditional hockey hotbeds. Game 1 is Saturday in Las Vegas. NBA – The NBA Finals are set: It’s the Heat and the Nuggets for the Larry O’Brien Trophy Cancel that flight plan, Denver. Turns out, the NBA Finals are starting in the Mile High City after all. And Jimmy Butler was proven right. Finally, we have a title-series matchup: The Miami Heat, champions of the Eastern Conference even after getting in as only the No. 8 seed, will take on the Western Conference champion Nuggets in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. The series starts in Denver on Thursday night. The Heat got there by winning Game 7 of the East title series in Boston on Monday night. Hayes was fouled with 9.4 seconds left and made two free throws for a three-point lead. Indiana found Lexie Hull open in the corner for a potential tying shot but her 3-pointer came up short. Alyssa Thomas added 13 points, 17 rebounds and seven assists and Natisha Hiedeman scored 11 for Connecticut. NCAAMBB – North Carolina transfer Caleb Love commits to Arizona Caleb Love is now headed to Arizona. The 6-foot-4 guard averaged 14.6 points and 3.3 assists in three seasons at North Carolina. He averaged 17.6 points in seven NCAA Tournament games, helping lead the Tar Heels to the 2022 national championship game. Love entered the transfer portal after leading North Carolina with 73 3-pointers as a junior and initially committed to Michigan. He decommitted from the Wolverines earlier this month, reportedly due to an admissions issue involving academic credits. NCAABB – Kentucky to house teams in dorms for regional due to hotel room shortage A shortage of hotel rooms in the Lexington area this weekend will require visiting baseball teams in the NCAA Tournament’s Lexington Regional to stay in dormitories on the Kentucky campus or in hotels more than 30 miles away. Kentucky is the No. 12 seed for the 64-team tournament and earned the right to host Ball State, Indiana and West Virginia for double-elimination play Friday through Monday. Several previously scheduled events in the Lexington area created a room shortage. Ball State and West Virginia spokesmen said their teams and staff would stay in the dorms. NCAAMBB – North Carolina transfer Caleb Love commits to Arizona Caleb Love is now headed to Arizona. The North Carolina transfer tweeted that he will play next season with the Wildcats, less than a month after decommitting from Michigan. Indiana did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The boys wonder how 3rd base will be handled next season as both Urshela and Miranda had a good series. Dan wants to know if the Twins should have had Buxton get his knee surgery earlier in the season, and David wants to know if Dan cares if the Twins finish 2nd or 3rd in the AL Central. MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Minnesota Twins 5, Detroit Tigers 3 – 10 Innings Kansas City Royals 2, Chicago White Sox 1 Cubs were off Twins 5, Tigers 3 – F/10 – Urshela’s 2-run homer in 10th gives Twins 5-3 win vs Tigers Gio Urshela hit a game-ending, two-run homer in the 10th inning and Jose Miranda had three RBIs as the Minnesota Twins came back to beat the Detroit Tigers 5-3. Jose Miranda had three RBIs for the Twins, who maintained their one-game lead in the AL Central over Cleveland. Miranda hit a tying, two-run single in the eighth. He added an RBI single in the 10th before Urshela’s big hit. Tigers starter Tarik Skubal was pulled following five scoreless innings with left arm fatigue. Royals 2, White Sox 1 – Perez, Merrifield homer, Royals edge White Sox 2-1 Salvador Perez and Whit Merrifield hit solo home runs, Daniel Lynch took a shutout into the sixth inning in his return from the injured list and the Kansas City Royals edged the Chicago White Sox 2-1 for their second straight win. Perez launched a monster blast for the second straight game and his third homer in four contests after missing 31 games with a left thumb injury and surgery. Merrifield’s drive into the left-field bullpen off Michael Kopech in the sixth might have been his last with Kansas City. A two-time All Star in seven seasons with the Royals, the second baseman has been the subject of trade rumors heading into Tuesday’s deadline. Tim Anderson and Andrew Vaughn each had two hits off Lynch, but the White Sox slipped back to .500 (51-51). Tonight Detroit (Manning 0-0) at Minnesota (Archer 2-5), 7:40 p.m.                 WSJM/WCSY 7:20 Chicago Cubs (Thompson 8-4) at St. Louis (Wainwright 7-8), 7:45 p.m. Kansas City (Keller 5-11) at Chicago White Sox (Giolito 6-6), 8:10 p.m. MLB – Braves get OF Robbie Grossman from Tigers for minor leaguer The defending World Series champion Atlanta Braves have acquired veteran corner outfielder Robbie Grossman in a trade with the Detroit Tigers for minor league pitcher Kris Anglin. The 32-year-old Grossman is making $5 million this year and can become a free agent after the season. He has struggled for the out-of-contention Tigers with a .205 batting average, 13 doubles, two home runs and 23 RBIs in 83 games. The switch-hitter has started 43 games in left field and 31 games in right. Grossman set career highs in 2021 in his Tigers debut with 23 home runs and 156 games. MLB – White Sox acquire lefty reliever Diekman from Red Sox The Chicago White Sox have acquired left-handed reliever Jake Diekman from the Boston Red Sox for catcher Reese McGuire and a player to be named or cash. Later Monday, the Red Sox acquired left fielder Tommy Pham in a trade with Cincinnati in exchange for a player to be named later or cash. The 35-year-old Diekman is 5-1 with a 4.23 ERA in 44 appearances this season. The 6-foot-4 Diekman is particularly tough on left-handed batters, holding them to a .188 average this season. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Tonight Dallas Wings at Chicago Sky, 9:00 p.m. WNBA – Brittney Griner’s trial resumes amid intensified diplomacy Since Brittney Griner last appeared in her trial for cannabis possession, the question of her fate has expanded from a cramped courtroom on Moscow’s outskirts to the highest level of Russia-U.S. diplomacy. The WNBA star and two-time Olympic gold medalist is to return to court on Tuesday. That is a month after the beginning of the trial in which she could face 10 years in prison if convicted. As the trial has progressed, the Biden administration has faced rising calls for action to win her release. In an extraordinary move, Secretary of State Antony Blinken last week spoke to his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, urging him to accept a deal under which Griner and Paul Whelan, an American imprisoned in Russia on an espionage conviction, would go free. NFL – Browns QB Watson suspended 6 games, NFL weighs appeal Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson was suspended for six games after being accused by two dozen women in Texas of sexual misconduct during massage treatments, in what a disciplinary officer said was behavior “more egregious than any before reviewed by the NFL.” The punishment handed out by the game’s disciplinary officer, former federal judge Sue L. Robinson, fell well short of what the NFL had asked for: an open-ended suspension of at least a year for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. Watson, who played for four seasons with Houston before being traded to Cleveland in March, recently settled 23 of 24 lawsuits filed by women alleging sexual harassment and assault during the treatments in 2020 and 2021. NFL – Watson discipline didn’t require legal charges Deshaun Watson and the Cleveland Browns found out the severity of the quarterback’s punishment when he was suspended for six games for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. Disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson made the decision after the NFL pushed for an indefinite suspension of at least one year and Watson’s legal team argued for no suspension during a three-day hearing. A player doesn’t have to be convicted or even charged with a crime to be disciplined for conduct detrimental to the league, per the collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and the NFL Players’ Association. Ezekiel Elliott, Ben Roethlisberger, Jameis Winston and Kareem Hunt are among players who have received suspensions despite not being charged criminally. NFL – Fans debate Watson’s 6-game suspension for assault claims Football fans are debating the six-game suspension for Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson. The reaction was mixed even among Browns fans who hope Watson can be a franchise quarterback. Touchdown Browns Backers Club President Rhonda Whitelock says some club members have told her they won’t watch the Browns anymore. She says other members don’t believe the women who have accused Watson of sexual misconduct during massage treatments. NFL – Lions giving Harris chance to earn starting cornerback spot Under a previous head coach and front office, Detroit drafted Will Harris in 2019 to play safety. Now, the Lions are giving him a chance to be a much-needed cornerback in coach Dan Campbell’s second season. Harris’ move to cornerback started in the middle of last season, when injuries at the position forced Lions coaches to adjust on the fly. In an effort to narrow his focus, the Lions are making Harris a full-time outside cornerback this year, and they’re giving him a shot at the starting job opposite Amani Orurwariye. NFL – Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, Arizona QB Kyler Murray test positive for COVID-19 Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll has tested positive for COVID-19, the team announced. The Seahawks issued a statement about an hour before their fifth training camp practice started. The team said Carroll — who is fully vaccinated — tested positive on Sunday and is experiencing mild symptoms and is remaining at home. Carroll intends on participating in team meetings virtually until he is cleared to rejoin the team. Carroll is the oldest coach in the league and will turn 71 in mid-September.  Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray has tested positive for COVID-19. The two-time Pro Bowl selection tested positive on Sunday. Coach Kliff Kingsbury said on Monday that Murray was experiencing “minor” symptoms. The coach added that Murray will miss a minimum of five days. Murray also sat out Saturday’s practice with a sore right wrist. Kingsbury said that injury was “getting better.” Golf – LIV – Norman says Tiger Woods turned down $700-800M Saudi offer Tiger Woods turned down a Saudi offer Greg Norman says was in the neighborhood of $700 million to $800 million. Norman confirmed a figure he previously told the Washington Post. Norman was speaking to Fox News’ Tucker Carlson for an interview aired Monday night. The interview took place Sunday at Trump National in Bedminster, New Jersey. That’s where the third LIV Golf Invitational was held. Norman says he wasn’t the CEO of LIV Golf when Woods got the offer. Woods has spoken out against the Saudi-funded league. He says players who sign are turning their backs on the PGA Tour. The 24-year-old former Ohio State star had run out of gas on Interstate 595 near Fort Lauderdale about dawn. He told a companion he was going to find a gas station. He didn’t throw serious passes during organized team activities Monday, and he might not do so until training camp. Stafford still believes he needs to get plenty of work done while the Rams begin their preparations to chase a second ring. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Tonight Indiana Fever at Chicago Sky, 8:00 p.m. NFL – Autopsy: Steelers QB Haskins was drunk when fatally struck An autopsy report shows that Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins was legally drunk when he was fatally struck by a dump truck on a Florida highway last month. The Broward County Medical Examiner said in its report released Monday that Haskins’ blood-alcohol content was more than twice the legal level for driving when he was struck April 9. The 24-year-old former Ohio State star had run out of gas on Interstate 595 near Fort Lauderdale about dawn. He told a companion he was going to find a gas station. The dump truck driver told investigators Haskins stepped in front of him as he traveled in the center lane. NFL – QB Nick Foles reunites with Frank Reich, signs with Colts Nick Foles is reuniting with Frank Reich. That combination helped the Philadelphia Eagles win the 2017 NFL title. Reich now is head coach of Indianapolis, and the Colts signed free agent quarterback Foles on Monday to back up Matt Ryan. The Colts traded with Atlanta for Ryan earlier this offseason. Foles got a two-year deal after spending the past two seasons in Chicago, playing in only one game in 2021 despite the Bears still paying him under a four-year, $88 million contract he got from Jacksonville in 2019. The Bears released the 10-year veteran on May 1. NFL – AP source: Commanders procure Va. land for possible stadium A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press the Washington Commanders have procured land in Virginia for what could be a potential site of the NFL team’s next stadium. The Commanders agreed to pay approximately $100 million for 200 acres of land in Prince William County and are still considering other locations in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. The Commanders’ lease at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, expires in 2027. Owner Dan Snyder and Co. have been looking at potential sites in D.C., Maryland and Virginia. NFL – Stafford, Rams easing back to work after Super Bowl win Matthew Stafford had an offseason injection in his elbow to quell an unspecified minor injury that nagged him throughout the Los Angeles Rams’ run to the Super Bowl. He didn’t throw serious passes during organized team activities Monday, and he might not do so until training camp. Stafford still believes he needs to get plenty of work done while the Rams begin their preparations to chase a second ring. Stafford thinks he can improve, and he also realizes he needs time to form a bond with new receiver Allen Robinson. With the regular-season opener against Buffalo still 3 1/2 months away, Stafford has plenty of time. Tennis – French Open – Djokovic wins at French Novak Djokovic has won his first Grand Slam match in 7 1/2 months. The No. 1-seeded Djokovic opened his title defense at the French Open with a 6-3, 6-1, 6-0 victory in less than two hours over Yoshihito Nishioka. He improved to 18-0 for his career in the first round at Roland Garros. Djokovic, who turned 35 on Sunday, is pursuing a third title in Paris and a 21st Grand Slam trophy overall, which would tie him with Rafael Nadal for the men’s record.  Naomi Osaka suffered a straight-set loss to 20-year-old American Amanda Anisimova. The former No. 1 player said afterward she is leaning toward skipping Wimbledon.  Rafael Nadal and all of his aches and pains reached the second round of the French Open. The 13-time champion at Roland Garros beat Jordan Thompson 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 in the first round. CFL – CFL players reject labor deal, urge more negotiations Canadian Football League players have rejected the new collective bargaining agreement with the league. The players’ union confirmed the deal had been voted down in a memo to its members on Monday night. The CFL Players’ Association says in the memo that a new deal could be reached “if the league is prepared to resolve the outstanding issues quickly.” The tentative deal was reached last Wednesday, four days after players with seven of the league’s nine teams went on strike. It was the second work stoppage in league history and first since 1974. The Minnesota Twins take two of three at Target Field in their first series against the newly named Cleveland Guardians. The boys continue to be impressed by Royce Lewis and Dan wants to know how the Twins should handle him upon Correa's return to the lineup. Arraez seems to have found his home at first base and the guys are impressed at his chemistry with Urshela at third. Much to his chagrin, Dan gives praise to Joe Smith who has consistently worked his way out of jams created by others, but takes time to revel in the Reds throwing a no-hitter but losing the game. David is unhappy with Rocco's management in game two and thinks Buxton is being handled too carefully. The first episode of the newly named Boogie Down Bombers Podcast! The guys start off talking about how on fire Aaron Judge has been lately (01:00) and move on to how the Yankees came back from their injuries last season, along with Stanton being locked in (05:00). Andujar in left field was the next topic, which is not the best, but Urshela playing third is the real deal. The boys also think Tauchman should be getting some more looks in left field (10:00). The Cardinals have had a mini-team-outbreak of COVID-19, which is not great for the NL (16:00). The Marlins and Phillies are coming back from their COVID-19 postponements (20:00). The Mets couldn't find Cespedes, and both the Mets and Cespedes handled the situation pretty poorly (23:00). There was an Ohtani injury update mid-pod, and it wasn't one that Tim was fond of (34:00). The guys went over the league stat leaders (39:00) and there was a recap of how the new pod name came to be (44:00)! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/boogiedownbombers/support
