In a recent survey, I read that while most U.S. adults understand self-care as balancing all health aspects, an overwhelming 41% are engulfed in daily responsibilities, making self-care a daunting task. When do people succeed? When they have support. 60% of adults believe having support is critical to prioritizing self-care. We are social beings who thrive with encouragement and companionship on our health journey. Interestingly, the survey highlights exercise, sleep, and mental health as the top areas of self-care. These are crucial yet often overlooked components of a healthy lifestyle. Moreover, more than half of the respondents view self-care days as a temporary solution, emphasizing the importance of cultivating small, daily habits for lasting change. And I'm here to tell you that EVERYTHING can change when you seek others to help you. In 2023, I never planned on going on a health journey. Truthfully, I just got to the place where I was tired of being overweight and exhausted. I knew another diet wasn't going to work. Instead, I turned to my friend Amber Lia and asked her to be my health coach. I was excited because her coaching was free. But the best part is that Amber had been where I was. She's lost 90lbs and has kept it off for five years. I started my health journey at the end of March and lost over 80 pounds. I leaned into the program, and I turned to Amber for help. She didn't judge me. Instead, she gently guided me. With Habits of Health, most of their coaches began as clients, providing empathy and understanding rooted in personal experience. This program isn't just about offering tools. It's about approaching wellness in a way that encompasses mind, body, and spirit. And the coaches guide your way. It's like a cheerleading squad on your wellness journey! That's a long introduction leading up to today's guest. Soon after I started my health journey, I started coaching others--primarily for accountability. As Amber says, "The system is already developed. Coaching is just caring and sharing." I love that! Then, I met Jamil through Amber. Amber has looked up to Jamil for help and advice for years. When I started as a health coach, I attended trainings led by Jamil. I soon learned that Jamil is both wise and inspiring. After spending time with Jamil, I WANT to do more for myself and others! God has good plans for us, and I want to follow them well. Because I've received so much encouragement, I asked if Jamil could encourage you through this podcast. Jamil is inspiring but also practical. After tuning in, I hope you'll start thinking differently about your dreams and goals. (I know you will!) I also hope you'll see that "self-care" will impact you and allow you to impact others. The last few episodes I've shared how I had 3 angry responses to my wife in the same week. I was shocked that I had done this once, much less 3 times in the same week! I was searching Audible for a new book and Audible suggested "Marriage Triggers". What a cool God Wink. So I downloaded the book and asked the author to join us on the podcast! Excited to share my conversation with Amber Lia, author of Marriage Triggers, Parenting Scripts, Food Triggers and Triggers: Exhanging Parents Angry Reactions for Gentle Biblical Responses. Some highlights from this episode: -"Holy Pauses" -"What are you making an Idol in Your Life?" -H.A.L.T. -"Overwhelm is a choice" -"Is it Worth it?" -"Lovingly tell me something that you would like to see improved." Amber Lia used to be a college athlete and recreational bodybuilder, but after 10 years of marriage and five pregnancies, she realized she was among the 74% of people who are considered overweight, according to the CDC. Well, Amber went on a journey to reclaim her health, one unhealthy pattern at a time. And today, she'll help us do the same. Amber shares practical strategies to help you leave behind feelings of defeat, overcome food triggers, and embrace healthy habits. She'll explain how, with God's grace, you can win the spiritual tug-of-war between bad patterns and good habits, which is the ultimate food fight. Are you ready? We're about to exchange our unhealthy patterns for God-honoring habits! SHOW NOTES: 413podcast.com/202
Wendy Speake, long-time friend of the Podcast, (she's my most frequent, and probably most-requested guest!) is back with us for another great Mom-to-Mom chat this week. Wendy and I are talking about a topic from one of the books she has co-authored with Amber Lia, “Parenting Scripts.” I think you would agree that a universal parenting challenge is that of finding yourself in a moment of frustration, with the need to correct or discipline, but the “right words” simply don't come. In moments like these we often tend to say the wrong thing…something we later regret. Wendy and I talk about how differently things go when we think ahead, consider our words or actions, and get intentional about our response! That's the heart of Parenting Scripts and it is a game changer. I think this episode will be a big encouragement, and hopefully springboard you into some parenting scripts of your own! www.monicaswanson.com/episode-161 Podcast page (for all episodes) www.monicaswanson.com/podcast * Be sure to check out the Character Training Course's SUMMER SALE beginning June 15th (doors will be open for one week only!)
