If your mothering seems overshadowed by anger, you are not alone, and Amber's story highlights new ways of dealing with triggers that help moms become the mothers they want to be!Donate to Moody Radio: http://moodyradio.org/donateto/morningshow/wdlmSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Author and speaker Amber Lia joins us to talk about her brand-new devotional, Untriggered: 60 Days of Transformation for Moms Who Struggle With Anger. Amber gets real about what it looks like to parent with grace, even when your kids are driving you crazy. We dive into the sometimes-controversial term "gentle parenting"—why it's often misunderstood, and why it doesn't mean being a doormat. Amber also shares practical tools for staying calm when you're feeling triggered, how to ditch the comparison trap, and why our kids don't need perfect parents...because there's no such thing. This one is full of encouragement, wisdom, and the kind of honesty we all need more of in the trenches of parenthood. In a recent survey, I read that while most U.S. adults understand self-care as balancing all health aspects, an overwhelming 41% are engulfed in daily responsibilities, making self-care a daunting task. When do people succeed? When they have support. 60% of adults believe having support is critical to prioritizing self-care. We are social beings who thrive with encouragement and companionship on our health journey. Interestingly, the survey highlights exercise, sleep, and mental health as the top areas of self-care. These are crucial yet often overlooked components of a healthy lifestyle. Moreover, more than half of the respondents view self-care days as a temporary solution, emphasizing the importance of cultivating small, daily habits for lasting change. And I'm here to tell you that EVERYTHING can change when you seek others to help you. In 2023, I never planned on going on a health journey. Truthfully, I just got to the place where I was tired of being overweight and exhausted. I knew another diet wasn't going to work. Instead, I turned to my friend Amber Lia and asked her to be my health coach. I was excited because her coaching was free. But the best part is that Amber had been where I was. She's lost 90lbs and has kept it off for five years. I started my health journey at the end of March and lost over 80 pounds. I leaned into the program, and I turned to Amber for help. She didn't judge me. Instead, she gently guided me. With Habits of Health, most of their coaches began as clients, providing empathy and understanding rooted in personal experience. This program isn't just about offering tools. It's about approaching wellness in a way that encompasses mind, body, and spirit. And the coaches guide your way. It's like a cheerleading squad on your wellness journey! That's a long introduction leading up to today's guest. Soon after I started my health journey, I started coaching others--primarily for accountability. As Amber says, "The system is already developed. Coaching is just caring and sharing." I love that! Then, I met Jamil through Amber. Amber has looked up to Jamil for help and advice for years. When I started as a health coach, I attended trainings led by Jamil. I soon learned that Jamil is both wise and inspiring. After spending time with Jamil, I WANT to do more for myself and others! God has good plans for us, and I want to follow them well. Because I've received so much encouragement, I asked if Jamil could encourage you through this podcast. Jamil is inspiring but also practical. After tuning in, I hope you'll start thinking differently about your dreams and goals. (I know you will!) I also hope you'll see that "self-care" will impact you and allow you to impact others. About Amber: Born and raised in California, I love the combination of city life and outdoor living that is ideal for a Boy-Mom who is raising men. Raised in a home that taught the Bible, table manners, and a love for the beach, I find myself passing those ideals on to the next generation. (Though with four sons, table manners are always a work in progress!) More than anything, I want to live up to my God-given potential. And I want that for my friends, family, readers, and clients too! That's why I write about gentle parenting, thriving marital relationships, and how to live a healthy lifestyle — all with practical and biblical truth! Personally, my most cherished moments are when I'm reading and praying in my hammock, sipping sparkling water, while talking on the phone with a close friend, or spending long slow days at the beach with my family to rest and rejuvenate. We're talking about where God's grace meets us in our anger. Anger is one of those dirty, little secrets no good Christian woman wants to talk about. We don't like to admit that we can be so easily swayed into an emotion that triggers behavior that is so incredibly ugly. And yet… we all get angry. Some of us give full vent to our anger, and some of us stuff it down, so it leaks out in weird ways in unrelated moments. Amber and I talk through The two types of anger Whether it's wrong to get angry And what to do with guilt when you reacted in anger. Key Quotes “God has allowed me to use my emotions to serve me, not enslave me.” - Author Amber Lia “We are to hate evil and sin and everything it stands for.” - Author Amber Lia “If we can start to see triggers as opportunities, instead of something for us to get mad and angry and reactionary about, then it changes everything.” - Author Amber Lia “I got tired of operating in the aftermath of chaos.” - Author Amber Lia “How does God draw us to repentance? Oh, it's with His lovingkindness.” - Author Amber Lia “Conviction that is loving will catapult us toward love.” - Author Amber Lia“If you're just stuffing them down, you're not allowing your emotions to serve you. Those emotions are still enslaving you.” - Author Amber Lia “Whatever our emotions are, there should be a healthy outlet for them.” - Author Amber Lia “We have to become advocates for our own lives and our own emotional health and well-being.” - Author Amber Lia “Anger is not your enemy, but you need to direct it toward your enemy.” - Author Amber Lia “Don't heap shame on yourself if you struggle with anger.” - Author Amber Lia As Mentioned in the Podcast The FCC requires that I tell you that I'm an Amazon Affiliate, which means I earn a bit of commission on each sale. Are you ready to experience a spiritual feast? My guest today, Wendy Speake, is a trained actress, author, Bible teacher, and speaker. She shares how fasting leads to spiritual feasting. It began when she sought what God wanted for her life. Soon Wendy was inviting others to join her on a 40-day sugar fast journey and the response was overwhelming. What she and so many others discovered was how to stop turning to sugar and other things to satisfy, and return to God. We talk about her books The 40-Day Sugar Fast: Where Physical Detox Meets Spiritual Transformation, and Triggers: Exhanging Parents' Angry Responses for Gentle Biblical Responses and so much more! Wendy and I are talking about a topic from one of the books she has co-authored with Amber Lia, “Parenting Scripts.” I think you would agree that a universal parenting challenge is that of finding yourself in a moment of frustration, with the need to correct or discipline, but the “right words” simply don't come. In moments like these we often tend to say the wrong thing…something we later regret. Wendy and I talk about how differently things go when we think ahead, consider our words or actions, and get intentional about our response! That's the heart of Parenting Scripts and it is a game changer. I think this episode will be a big encouragement, and hopefully springboard you into some parenting scripts of your own! www.monicaswanson.com/episode-161 Podcast page (for all episodes) www.monicaswanson.com/podcast * Be sure to check out the Character Training Course's SUMMER SALE beginning June 15th (doors will be open for one week only!) Whether you have toddlers or teenagers, the self-paced video lessons, downloads and interviews (including two with Wendy!) will equip and encourage you to raise kids of character. Find out more here!

Mom anger is real, it is hidden, it is often something that takes the calmest and even the most loving and positive mother by surprise, and is one of the most shameful and embarrassing topics in mom circles because most mothers think they must be the only ones who get angry with their children. From our children's immaturity, our own personal struggles, our circumstances, and a child's behavior, we all have moments where our children have not seen the best in us. And most of the time, it is directed or misdirected at them. Which is the last thing any of us want for our motherhood or for our children. Today, we are chatting with Amber Lia, a native of California, married to her husband Guy and raising four boys. Amber is an author, speaker, life and health coach and this topic brought her book Triggers, to the top selling list, as it caught the attention of many desperate mamas, finding help and encouragement with our Mom Rage.
