Glioblastoma. It's the most aggressive and least treatable type of brain cancer. Research into treatment has been slow, mostly because of the difficulty in accessing and treating a tumor that exists behind the blood-brain barrier. A new two year fellowship into Glioblastoma Multiforme, or GBM, aims to better drug therapies to fight the cancer while developing better tests to determine which drugs are working on an individual patient's tumor and which are not. The fellowship, established by Shawn Lane and the Lori Lane Foundation together with Chris and Florence Spyrow, honors Lori Lane and Andrew Spyrow, whose lives were cut short by GBM. This month on TGen Talks, Valerie De Luca, Ph.D., the inaugural Lori Lane/Andrew Spyrow Fellow at TGen discusses her work toward improving our understanding of molecular markers associated with tumor vulnerability to specific drugs.
In this episode of the Mills Knows Bills podcast, host Mills Bender, founder and CEO of Mills Knows Bills, interviews Shawn Lane, CEO and founder of FRS Credit, a credit repair company. Mills advocates a balanced approach to managing debts, savings, and investments simultaneously. He explains the debt stacking method for paying off debts and stresses the importance of having an emergency fund and investing early for retirement. We have a special guest joining Matthew for this Super Cool Radio interview. In July, Matthew had the opportunity to interview Kofi Baker. Kofi is the son of Cream and Blind Faith drummer, Ginger Baker. Kofi has been drumming for almost his entire life. His first live performance was when he was six on the UK TV music show The Old Grey Whistle Test. In the 80's, Kofi and his father performed drum duets in Europe. Kofi has toured with John Ethridge, Steve Marriot's Humble Pie, Jack Bruce, and Jonas Hellborg and Shawn Lane, to name a few. Kofi's current focus is his project, Cream Faith, which celebrates classic cuts from Cream and Blind Faith, with other top session musicians. In this interview, hear Kofi discuss his time in The Music of Cream, his favorite Cream and Blind Faith song to perform live, some stories from his childhood including his dad pouring gasoline while smoking a cigarette, new music with Rob Johnson, and so much more! SCR and Matthew Thomas would like to thank Kofi for the great interview. This episode is the second half of my tribute to legendary guitarist and musician Tony Rice. The entire show runs in chronological order and was designed as a career retrospective so there was really no question that there would be little to no editing. Huge thanks to Jon Stickley, Lyndsay Pruett, and Shawn Lane. I could not think of a better group to honor Tony's music and I'm grateful for their dedication to the project. We occasionally play as Still Inside; a Tribute to Tony Rice at my weekly gig at 185 King St. in Brevard and this music and this ensemble always makes me extremely happy. On Christmas Day 2020 we lost the greatest flat top flat picker of all time, the incredible Tony Rice. I've been obsessed with Tony's music since the first time I came across it and immediately set to work putting together a tribute to this legend. He was a huge inspiration for me and all of my contemporaries and I am so grateful to Shawn Lane, Lyndsay Pruett, and Jon Stickley for helping me produce this career retrospective. I loved Tony Rice and this is my gift to him and any would-be/should be fans of this musical luminary. The show ran nearly 2 hours and I didnt want to cut anything out so I split it into two episodes. :06 soundbite: Stickley on Tony's tuning 1:16 introduction 3:50 on Tony Rice, the show 5:36 Don't Give Your Heart to a Rambler 9:06 on J.D. I was born, and grew up, in Memphis, learned the basics of reading music at a young age, and got my first guitar at around age 5. Self-taught for the most part, I took lessons from a few key figures: Bob Salley (a university instructor) at age 14, Shawn Lane (a musical phenom) at age 18, was a University of Memphis music student for 2 years. Later, when I arrived in Maine I studied guitar for a year with the truly gifted Bob Thompson. In my teens I started playing in original and cover bands (rock, R&B, and blues). I played out a lot, mostly in town, sometimes other states down south. I had the privilege of recording in a few of the landmark studios in Memphis, which brought me into contact with incredible people. Some of my work was on original music, and some was in an effort to be a studio musician: playing on song demos for writers, or cutting jingles, theme songs, or really anything. From 1998-2002 I took a detour and attended the East Tennessee State University Quillen College of Medicine in Johnson City, TN. During those years I played in a popular local cover band. From 2002- 2007 I completed my medical training in Tampa, FL, and Houston, TX. There was no time for playing in bands during that time, (though a few gigs did happen). In 2007 my family and I moved to Maine, where I started practicing medicine. After about 5 years of practice I began playing out again or a limited basis. In 2018 I joined an established cover band in Brunswick. From summer 2021 until February 2022 I recorded the album get up in my home studio in Harpswell. It is available online at https://billstamey.bandcamp.com/releases

GrassTalkRadio.com - Episode 203 Curtis Jones Interview Curtis Jones is a supremely diverse musician and a world-class acoustic guitarist. Down to earth, humble and amazingly gifted. I know you will enjoy meeting my friend Curtis Jones. If you want your mind blown, go see him play live. His interview is another in my series to try to convince the listeners that Georgia has produced an amazing number of fine bluegrass musicians. Sometimes many people tend to think that great bluegrass simply must come from Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia or Tennessee. Curtis is one more great example in favor of Georgia born musicians. The segue music you hear at the start of the interview is from Curtis' CD "Blue As I" (1998) and is a bit of his original instrumental "Pistol Pete". The outro music is his song "Better Days" from the same recording. Both tunes feature Curtis on guitar, Alison Brown on banjo, Dan Tyminski on mandolin and Missy Raines on bass. "Better Days" features Curtis singing lead with Shawn Lane singing tenor. Xander Demos is a high-energy rock and metal guitar player from Pittsburgh, PA. He is fueled by the passion to create melodic songs ranging from rock and metal genres to pop and ambient. Xander normally is associated with the rock and metal world but his versatility allows him to be comfortable in many forms of music. Xander grew up in the decade of decadance and has been a big fan of everything from pop-metal, Top-40, thrash metal, progressive rock and even dance-related music. As long as there was a hook or a melody, he picked up on it. Xander's main influences are Shawn Lane, Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, Vinnie Moore, Guthrie Govan, Jason Becker, Neal Schon, Micheal Romeo and John Sykes. In the early days, he was fortunate to have some teachers whom he respected and had given him great tools by which to hone his fluid technique. Some of these players include Ralph Santolla (ex-Deicide, Obituary), Dallas Perkins (M.I. Instructor) and currently Derryl Gabel. Xander's playing style ranges from the beautifully melodic to the jaw-dropping insane. His playing encompasses much of what he has learned and absorbed from other players over the years. His melodies are the kind you can hum along to. He is releasing the full-length follow-up to his EP "Road To Guitarcadia", an instructional DVD, working with his three bands playing live every weekend and is now accepting guitar students for in-person and online lessons. 2011 had been a good year and Xander is currently building on that momentum for 2012. Make sure you check the news page as well as his Facebook page which gives constant news about his musical activities.
