In the coming weeks at our services, we are going to focus attention on the Spirit of God, as he is revealed in the Hebrew Scriptures. It is interesting to note that while he is spoken of in both the Hebrew Scriptures and New Testament writings, reference to the Spirit of God is not as pervasive in the Hebrew Scriptures ashhe is in the texts of the New Testament.For example, the Spirit of God is mentioned in every New Testament book with the exception of the three short personal letters of Philemon, II John, and III John. On the other hand, He is only referred to in less than half of the thirty-nine books that make up the Hebrew Scriptures. We are first introduced to the Spirit of God in the opening verses of the Bible which records the creation of the universe. There He is called רוּחַ אֱלֹהִים (pronounced ruach elohim) meaning "the Spirit of God."Depending upon the context, the Hebrew word ruach can be translated as "spirit," "wind" or "breath." Here in Genesis chapter 1, reference is to the third person of the Tri-unity who is described like that of a bird "brooding" on its nest.The Hebrew term translated as "hovering," or "moving" is מְרַחֶפֶת (pronounced m'rachephet) meaning "to flutter," or "brood." As such, the Spirit of God is pictured as a brooding bird conveying life and providing protection to its young.In a word, this is "regeneration" - the bringing about of life. In the context of creation, that which was initially formless, void and in darkness comes to life over the course of the six days of creation.Regeneration is a gift of the Spirit of God in two senses. It is a gift from God as well as a gift of God. This is to say regeneration is a work of God in us by him. Paul explains: "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith -- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God" (Ephesians 2:8).We do not save ourselves. He saves us. Cinematographer John Mathieson, BSC began his career shooting music videos for bands like Nirvana and Hole, moving into documentaries and commercials before working in feature films. Rather than going to film school, he joined friends who formed a film collective and everyone learned from each other. Director Ridley Scott saw his work on the movie, Plunkett & Macleane, and approached him to shoot Gladiator. “I never thought I'd be the sword and sandals guy,” says John. “I was doing grunge videos!” John was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for Gladiator. For Gladiator II, John embraced the advancements in visual effects technology, which allowed for more efficient and creative storytelling. While the film was shot digitally, his approach to cinematography remained similar to the first film. “We didn't do much different with the cameras or the language of the story,” he says, “but parts of the filmmaking process have gotten faster and easier. We shot on digital in about half the time it took to shoot Gladiator.” John focused on creating a visually striking world in Gladiator II, inspired by historical paintings and the contrasting environments of Rome and the desert. He wanted high contrast lighting, especially in the desert scenes at the beginning of the film and in the gladiator arena so that it looked dusty, hot, and overexposed. In contrast, the light inside the Roman homes is warmer and richer. John describes it as, “Everything's got dust and then Rome is colorful, opulent- grapes, wine, peacock greens, paisleys, fabrics, all that kind of decadence-it's camp, it's vulgar, it's Vegas 1970.” When choosing projects, John prioritizes scripts that resonate with him and directors who can effectively guide the filmmaking process. He enjoys exploring and working in different film genres. “I like to think I don't have a style, you know, that I can adapt to what is on the page or what is important,” he says. RECEIVE YOUR FULL REWARD Separation and union. Well, now you are free. Did you hear it? Did you hear Paul clearly say it. Verse 22, now you are free. You are free from the power of sin. And yet, you have become a slave, but not to sin, but to God. You are united to him, And it's all because of what Christ has done for us and and because of the Spirit of Christ that now dwells in us. Enabling you, empowering you, awakening you, to who you really are. now in Christ, you become a new creation, a new person, a free person, no longer a slave to sin, no longer imprisoned by your past, or to the inclinations or habits that that have imprisoned you in the past. You are free. And you can begin to learn to live in the truth of your freedom. You can exercise your freedom, to be what you now are. That's what the life of discipleship. But it begins with truth of your union with God. rooting yourselves in this new reality, that has been purchased for you, accomplished for you, now living in you, you're free. You're absolutely free. Now you are a slave of God. Free to live as God has always intended for you, in him, forever. Today's readings are Jeremiah 37 – 39 and II John 1. We are reading from the New Living Translation. Blinded by his pride and fear, Zedekiah, in the end, became what he was. His eyes were taken out. He was a prisoner to his fear and pride. In the end he was led off into captivity. All his worst fears came true. He became what he was – blind and a prisoner. What a harsh and cruel master pride is. What we hear in II John today is so different. John is letting us know how grace, mercy, and truth come to all who love God and his kingdom more than their own selves – who don't let fear, pride and self stand in the way. Zedekiah and his officials, blindly held on to our own lives and kingdom, even after repeated warnings. Let's be alert to any desire within or without, that would dissuade us from the love, truth and mercy that we have in Jesus. John says, Watch out that you do not lose what we have worked so hard to achieve. Be diligent so that you receive your full reward. (II Jn 1:8 NLT) We do that by remaining in the truth of the Gospel. Remind your heart each day, of the great love God has for you in Christ. You are God's child. You are one who listens to his Word and responds to what he says, in faith. You have eyes that see, ever being freed from the blindness that comes from pride and fear. May you see more today, walk more in faith and experience freedom. May you receive your full reward – the love, mercy and grace that is yours, in Christ.
